Aegismax Ultra-light: Mummy vs Rectangular Down Sleeping Bags

  • I review and compare the Aegismax Ultra-Light large size mummy shape vs. rectangular shape down sleeping bags. There are some interesting differences. One expects a mummy shape to be tighter but this is not the case. The rectangular bag also has slightly higher fill weight.
    I failed to mention that the rectangular version also has a cinch cord with cord lock at the top opening, so it can be closed close to the neck to retain heat. Also, both models come with the white bag seen at the beginning of the video for storing the bag at home to keep the loft up on the down.
    I showed supplementing the bag with one of my Black Diamond quilts. See Frank Bush's review of the mummy version supplemented by a liner plus SOL bivvy. • Aegismax, SOL escape b...
    Another post-review consideration - in theory the rectangular version might be a touch cooler at the feet due to the bottom zipper, compared to the sewn end of the mummy style. Just not sure if it would be significant.

    I had the same idea of using a second lightweight bag and perhaps a bag liner as well. I could then add or subtract layers as needed. Have you tried the two bag system?

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  5 років тому

      I'm a fan of layering for multiple circumstances, including trips where night temperatures can vary over the duration of the trip, and also to supplement the warmth of another bag for very cold weather. When using the rectangular Aegismax this way inside another bag, I zipped it way down to leave just a footbox and used the rest as a throw just on top since I was on a good pad. It added a nice amount of warmth. The rather thin down on this bag compresses underneath you so all insulation is lost there. So in a hammock it can be zipped again into footbox mode and bunched as a throw on top (adding more loft) while using an underquilt (like the one at the end of my video). I also own an Alps Mountaineering Razor which has been good for summer camping and as a liner, but it's not as compact and light as the Aegismax. See my top description for a link to someone using the Aegismax with a bivvy.

    Hi! Thanks for taking the time to make a video about the illusive rectangular bag :0) I know you no longer have the mummy bag, but do you recall much about the difference in size when compressed in their stuff-sacks? I'm assuming the rectangular was a bit bigger? Would it be possible to post it's compressed minimum measurements, or a picture/video of the rectangular one next to some sort of size reference? No worries if not, the info from your video has been quite helpful already!

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  4 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, the mummy style seems to get all the attention, but I really like the rectangular one for a number of reasons. You might be thinking the rectangular is bigger due to slightly more down feather content? I would say there will be no meaningful difference between the two in terms of compressed size. I bet they even come with the same compression sack, which is about the size of a 1 liter Nalgene bottle. Both are light and very compact. Buy the one you think will work best for you. As I've mentioned in other replies, I'm glad we kept the rectangular.

    Hi, I really like your video. Did you field test the second sleeping bag ? How is the comfort temperature?

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  5 років тому

      Thanks for watching. I kept only the rectangular version so I did not field test the mummy style. I will say they would be nearly identical in terms of warmth and are also affected by other circumstances, such as using a decent sleeping pad on the ground or under-quilt for hammocks, as well as layering a little bit with clothing. I'm a cold sleeper so I would use this as a primary bag if low temps would remain at or above 55 F (12 C). There are many reviews of the mummy style out there and they might offer their own opinions too. I find that sleeping warmth really varies from person to person, and maybe with age as well.

    Useful video! I am thinking of buying the rectangular. I can't sleep in a mummy bag. I sleep with one knee bended. In a 85cm rectangular bag that works but slimmer bags are too restrictive. The rectangular aegismax could be opened halfway to use as a quilt probably?

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  7 місяців тому +1

      Apologies for this late reply. Absolutely, bags like the rectangular Aegismax that open all the way make excellent quilts. I leave a short length at the bottom zippered in order to form a foot box. This way it stays put and doesn;t get kicked to the side. I find the Aegismax to be very comfortable against my skin as well. When hammocking with an underquilt, I really enjoy using the Aegismax as a top quilt. And I also enjoy using it as a liner to supplement my cold weather bags. Very cozy.

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, Sean. There's no doubt the mummy style in Large 200 x 86 cm is roomier than the rectangular one which states 200 x 80 cm. And you can kind of see it in my video. Check out the linked video in my description since that guy is bigger than I am, and I think there's another review about the mummy by a bigger guy who likes it for the room it has.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Regarding noise, I just performed a simple test, moving the Aegismax against itself and a couple of other sleeping bags against themselves as well. @PaoloFrancesco99  5 років тому +1

      @@nouvelarrivant Good question. I know what you mean. The material is comfortable but, similar to other poly-lined bags, might feel sticky in warm weather. Leaving the zipper open could help. I kept the rectangular version so I could also open the bottom or just use it like a blanket to keep a little cooler. In cooler weather the bag will be comfortable and not sticky feeling. Another bag I use in summer is Alps Mountaineering Razor. It is lined with a thin fleece that does not feel sticky even on a warmer night. It's not quite as light or compact.

      @Max Chambers - Thanks for sharing that link. I see that NatureHike version in the UK does mate together as you say. I think the bag in my review is slightly different. The shape tapers slightly at the foot end, so I'm not sure the shape of the Aegismax allows two to join together. Maybe so.

    Hi Paolo - Have only just found your review, as interested in getting the rectangular Aegismax bag. Not many reviews compared to the mummy.
    Thanks for a very helpful comparison of the two bags. Was surprised you didn't comment on one of the obvious main differences - horizontal (mummy) vs vertical (rectangular) baffles. Did that impact how warm you found them both in real world testing ?
    Was wondering (2 years after posting your comparison) which bag you had found the most useful?
    How durable did they prove to be?
    And whether with hindsight you would purchase either of them again?
    Sorry for the all the questions, but have to make a decision soon.
    Many thanks, and greetings from across the pond....

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  4 роки тому +1

      Greetings, Sir Muddy Duck. I kept only the rectangular version so I did not compare warmth in the field, but I would venture to say there is negligible difference. I chose the rectangular because: 1 - I didn't need the spaciousness of the upper body of the mummy, and 2 - I found the rectangular one to be more versatile with the way one can use it in bag mode or fully unzipped as a throw. I sometimes use it as a liner in the winter by zipping up only a short footbox and then keeping the rest essentially doubled up on top, rather than compressing it beneath me, which decreases its insulating function.
      I am careful with my gear and have not had any issues with robustness. I would choose the rectangular version again today. Cheers.

      FWIW: I think the Aegismax mummy bag has 'stitched through' baffles . . . . not boxed/walled baffles . . . . . so a stretchy thermal bag liner is something you may want to have on hand. The AEGISMAX Thermolite sleeping bag liner is said to add 5°~8° celsius more warmth. (Doh! I just read the comment from Paolo below; 'Each down chamber is also stitched through a single layer, i.e. there's no insulation at the stitch lines'.)

      My wife bought herself a AEGISMAX NANO2 as it has baffle walls . . . my "plain old" Nano1 being stitched through led me to then purchase a WINGACE (Model : E-Chun-G) from AliExpress. It has baffles - a separate zip for the feet area - can be fully opened as a throw - can be bought with the zip on the Left or Right side - I bought 1,000g fill weight; size: 215 x 85cm.

    Is the costco as warm and thick as the aegismax? It looks like it in the video.. I am wondering if i should buy 2 costco blankets (which would cost me 80euro her in germany) or 2 aegismax rectangular sleeping bags. I want to be able to bike pack with a folding bike and my hammock in summertime (until 7 degrees celsius lowest night temp). But which is a better buy in your eyes for underquilt topquilt setup?

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  4 роки тому

      I kept the rectangular Aegismax and it just so happens that I used it up in the mountains this summer with my Hennessy hammock and Black Diamond (costco) underquilt. However, I also added my Alps Mountaineering Razor liner. The Aegismax is longer than the BD quilt and has substantially more loft and warmth. Since compressed down has little insulating value, I really like using the Aegismax in top quilt mode, where I leave only the bottom zipped to create a foot box. The rest is basically doubled up on top of me and the result is very cozy. One layer of the BD underquilt is the risk for a cold sleeper like me, so I used one more layer by getting into the Razor liner also to avoid hammock CBS, but the Razor is not so compact for your bike packing purpose. If you are considering two Aegismax: one for top quilt and the other for fashioning a bottom quilt, I think that would be a really nice hammock system. There is certainly a way to modify the Aegismax to work as an underquilt while leaving the option to use it as designed too. My underquilt modification for the BD quilt used a little sewing at the ends to create a cinching feature with shock cord. I shaped the long sides by folding over and using KAM snaps. The fold provided a channel to hold the end to end cords (mostly small diameter parachord, but with some length of shock cord) which clip into the ends of my hammock. I hope this helps. I'm happy to reply to a follow-up question.

    • @PaoloFrancesco99
      @PaoloFrancesco99  3 роки тому

      I wish I could provide a more useful link. Costco is a discount bulk items store in the USA, and it seems they might not carry these down throws anymore. Hammock camping DIY types have posted many DIY underquilt designs on UA-cam. I bought mine a few years ago during a Christmas sale for just $20, so I got two. The brand at Costco and at my store (also no longer sold) is Black Diamond. It comes with a flimsy but effective stuff sack. Here's a link from Amazon below, but it's a bit pricey as of this response. You can find alternatives by search terms like "down throw", "60x70 down throw", etc. There are cheaper ones available. Just make sure the materials are suitable if you plan to use it for outdoor activities, i.e. avoid cotton shell. Good luck.
