  • This video demonstrates the process of washing and drying a new AegisMax M2 Down Sleeping bag with NikWax Down Wash Direct. The down has lofted up considerably compared to the situation before.
It took hours to properly dry it out and to separate and dry the down clumps. I’d recommend washing the bag but be prepared for a lot of time to be spent baby sitting it and drying it. Plus it makes your house smell like a wet dog for a few hours.

I haven’t taken the bag out anywhere yet, so don’t know how effective it will be. I’m pretty confident though - especially after the wash. I’m hoping it’s really warm. I have a sleeping bag line on the way AND I’ve bought one of the popular Costco Double-Black Diamond down quilts as a backup.

It has a DWR - Durable Water Repellent coating on the outside fabric. TURN IT INSIDE OUT!

Thank you for sharing. I wouldn't have put a just washed sleeping bag on the floor, though.
If all one wants is to get it loftier, airing it should do it.

    Pretty impressive loft difference.

    fascinating.
did the bag maintain loft after it was compressed for a while?
    thanks

Have you used it yet? What's the temperature rating? After wash and dry it looks so lofty it appears to be an air mattress.

Is it harder to pack after this? Does it retain this loft after a few uses as well?

Hi John, my unwashed M2 appears as lofted as the washed and dried version.
IMHO the washing made little/no difference it was blowing hot air through that allowed the down to fully loft. If you had tumbled the prewashed bag for 30 minutes then compared/measured with the post washed bag I would be surprised if there is any difference. A damp or dirty bag would struggle to loft so well worth washing and tumble drying back to good as new.
Great value and quality bag nonetheless, add a quilt on top to go sub-zero (centigrade).

I don't know if the bag already comes waxed with water repellant or not from the factory, but on the Nitwax label it says it "restores water repellancy", which might be a reason for washing it.

If you like the toxic smell of "fresh out of china"
I would not use anything textile made from china without washing once.
I don`t own an Aegismax bag but i would bet money that they have that chemical smell.

@@k1dicarus I know what you're saying however, I own a couple of Chinese down bags and no chemical smell at all, intact they're great quality.

Do you know what's the difference between the Ultralight and the M2?
Looking at the specs they seem to have same temperature rating and length

    • @johnth8045
      @johnth8045 6 років тому +3

Hi Hector, the ultralight regular has 230g of 800 fill goose down with an EN 13537 rating of 11c comfort, the M2 regular has 380g of 800 fill goose down and an EN 13537 comfort of 7c. I have used my M2 from +30 to 0c, with the Aegismax outdoor ultra-light goose down hat (hood) for envelope sleeping bag down to +2c and still been warm. My friend has an ultralight and personally, I would not use it into single-digit temperatures, it is a summer bag, but very lightweight and compact.

John, so you're comfortable in the M2 on it's own down to about 0 degrees? Is that with an insulated sleeping pad?

    • @johnth8045

Hi Arahorn, I am a warm sleeper. My colder weather nightwear is merino wool base layer top and long john's, thin wool socks. I would recommend getting the AegisMax hooded style down hat, better than a fixed mummy bag hood as it moves with you. The mats I've used with the M2 during colder weather do have insulation, an Exped Synmat 7 and Alpkit Dumo.

John, wow look at that hood, that's awesome, thanks for that I get stupid cold ears so might look into it. I've already ordered the M2 which doesn't have the hood, but I always need something over my ears for anything below 20 degrees C. But the rest of me is a warm camper like you.
I'm from Newcastle Australia and need to provision for I suppose winter temps down to about -3 or so. I have normal beenies and a thin balaclava, but I suppose those might not be too comfie for winter outdoors. Just worried the hood might be too hot for Aussie winter temps. I got a Sea To Summit Thermolite fleece sleeping bag liner to go with the M2 for sub zero, which also doubles as a summer sleeping bag on it's own. What temps have you camped down to in Australia? I suppose there's the wind chill factor too which can make the temp go lower than records say, like -2 could be -10 with the wind? Is that right?

WALDO what's the lowest temp you've taken your to? I have the mummy and rectangle and I'm thinking of using both on a hike this September but I'd rather only bring one

The lowest I’ve gone is 60. And it works fine at that temp. I haven’t gone lower but I think I’d be able too with some type of base layer

Am I missing something here. If you intend to use it when you go camping you will have to stuff it into the stuff bag and the sleeping bag will lose its loft again. You cannot take the washing machine with you when you go camping . 😂
