    Great review. I haven't purchased the Sleeping bag from Aegismax but I do have a few of the Costco quilts. Someone sewed one like yours for me and can use it as a summer bag. It's great that you are showing the people that you can hike on a budget and these all do the same thing as a $300-$400 quilts that people get sucked into because they believe the hype.

    Good review. I have the Aegismax bag too. Been very happy with it so far. I like your approach with the Costco quilt, gives you a bit of flexibility with your sleep system. Nice one.

    Thank you for posting this video. I came up with the same idea so we must think alike. I might try the Costco quilt inside and then outside and see if one is more warm than the other.

    Great review. Darwin on the Trail included this bag in a budget gear series and I was intrigued. It’s gotten great reviews. I was a little hesitant because I often hear people with 30-40 degree bags say they wish they had a 20. But your layering idea may work for me. I’ve got a Snugpak Jungle Blanket that I could layer with this, and it’s only 1.5 pounds with its stuff-sack. So I may be able to get a sub-30s system for less than 3 pounds. (And only $100.) Not bad! Thanks for the idea! Also, thanks for showing how it fits. I’m also 5’10” so that was helpful.

    Brilliant. I had wondered about doing something similar to this with the Aegismax down bag and the Naturehike summer weight envelope sleeping bag

    Thanks for this vid. I really liked those bags when they came out but prefer a hooded bag for cooler weather. I have made up a $200 USD, 4lb system for 23 degF (-5 degC). It's a Naturehike +2 degC bag at .82kg plus a 400g klymit V-looking mattress. Finished with an StS reactor liner, pillow and a cheap aluminized foam roll-up. You've got me thinking about a Costo quilt to extent that.

    Wow! 12K views thanks alot everybody! Hopefully this review helped some of you decide to buy or improve on these products! I have a few more reviews on the way soon!!
    Just for those who are truly thinking this is a 20° degree sleeping system, it isn't. You may be warm enough in this system with added clothing layers underneath to about 25° if your a hot sleeper, but I wouldn't trust it below that. Even at that temp it's a little iffy and there will be cold spots throughout the night. That said, this is an amazing summer sleeping system that'll keep you warm and toasty to around 30°F easy!

      GreatLakesWoodsman is that the Aegis max regular or long version?

    • @GreatLakesWoodsman
      @GreatLakesWoodsman  6 років тому

      Hector Baeza I believe this is the long version but I can't recall. I want to say it's the 180cm length if memory serves me right

    • @MG-ze3lf
      @MG-ze3lf 5 років тому

      I agree. You could easily be down to that temp or below with a good pad. The sleeping pad has a lot to do with your warmth too.

      @jerrywells9222 6 років тому

      Sorry I have a new phone and screwed up. Anyway wool socks fleece lined rain pants a T-shirt and my puffer. It was 31 degrees when I got in my hammock and the low that night was 23 degrees. Made just fine

  • @uncatila
    @uncatila 5 років тому

    I used snaps to make that quilt into a liner. I got a 15° 2 lb bag. ymthis makes it a zero ° or I use it as a pillow in it's stuff sac. or I could just use the quilt.and use the bag as a pillow.

    Any chance of adding web links for the two items you bought, especially the Aegismax bag (as there appears to be a load of variations available). Thanks.

      MuddyDuck the costco DBB down throw can be bought off of amazon for $35; it's $20 in stores if you're a costco member.
      The aegismax is $73 on amazon. It can be bought on allie express for $40. It's their 2C-8C (30-35F) bag and can be black or green from what I can tell.

    It would be interesting to see how warm you'll be when you reverse the order of the two bags - so get into the Aegismax and put the quilt over that with the opening facing down. The theory being that the down you lay doesn't do much anyway, I suspect you'll be warmer. If you toss and turn then it may not be the best option, though. Thanx for the review.

      Marc Jacobi I agree 100%. I throw my DBB down throw in my MSS when it gets super cold. Maybe adds 5-10 degrees onto the system and I love it.

    Great review! I was thinking of this exact system so your video is timely. Question: has your girl friend tried this setup? And if so would she rate it to 25 degrees? I'm a girl and I know we tend to sleep cold.

    • @GreatLakesWoodsman
      @GreatLakesWoodsman  7 років тому +3

      Laura A Correia thanks for watching! No my girlfriend has not used it she likes to steal my 20* bag but I would think with a good base layer, socks, and maybe a fleece top you could be comfortable at around 30 if your a cold sleeper. Honestly I found 25 to be pushing it as I was feeling cold spots through the night but still warm enough to sleep comfortably and I'm a pretty warm sleeper. Having some food in your belly at night helps alot too!

    Hey thanks for the video. The bag is now selling for about $60 in aliexpress, that was the lowest price. The Costco blanket is pretty awesome. I don't have a sewing machine so I used Gorilla Tape inside and outside to make the same type of quilt shown on the video and it probably can hold its own down to the low 50s. I saw other reviews on the aegismax saying that high 30s/low 40s seems to be the low end, I mean the Costco blanket is bigger and a 700 while this sleeping bag is an 800 using less materials and it weighs about the same. So, I am assuming 25-30 degrees for both combined. Not bad for less than $90 and 2 lbs!

    Um, no. It is not rated (in your opinion) for 30 to 40 degrees. I doubt they checked with you before they rated it. No cold spots? Not even with no zipper baffle and through stitching? It is a cheap bag for mid range temperature. It is light weight.

    I liked your review. The noise of course needs to go. This is the first of your videos I've seen. The teacher in me says please work on your vocabulary and descriptions! You should really eliminate the word nice and the word very. I'll let you do the work, but, for example, instead of saying the zipper slides nice(ly), say it glides like idk something. Just up your vocabulary! Also, make sure you have a script and practice it first. Good job. I gave you a thumbs up!

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback, i have a masters degree In Ecology and am currently working on my PhD. Therefore my vocabulary tends to lean more into the scientific area of the English and Latin language hahaha! In the sciences we tend to keep things short and simple to get the data acrossed, no need for fancy synonyms.
