I go no more than 4,000 between changes because while the oil is better than it was in the old days, the filters really aren't, and I don't want the shit in a dirty oil filter getting back in my engine.

      They do (at least at my old high school). It's called "auto repair" class (or something similar). But it's usually not a required course. It's typically an elective (optional). I took it (many years ago), but I never got in the habit of changing my own oil. But it's not as difficult as you think. Just don't forget to miss a step. Otherwise, you're likely buying a new car or you're going to be EXTREMELY embarrassed and humiliated - maybe even in legal trouble, depending on your local or state laws.

    We've got a 98 Camry as a beater/grocery getter and since it's a California car, the paint's ruined BUT the interior's really clean, chassis/suspension's great, despite blown rear shocks, it actually still rides quietly and smoothly on the street/freeway. The engine (2.2 4cyl) still pulls strong at 285,5xx miles (never opened, all original) and it's really quiet and silky smooth as well! Some people just don't know how to own a car, because if you take good care of em, they def last. Great channel, by the way! Am a great fan!

      Apparently Toyota's engines are not all of equal quality. I've owned lexus GS300 2002 (made and assembled in Japan) and even though i change the oil with full synthetic every 3-4k miles or twice a year, I got a crank seal leak @96k miles. Makes me a bit sad, bc then my parents Highlander under similar conditions started a rear main leak at 120k miles. I was thinking Toyota's quality was a step ahead of Nissan, but my sister's Xterra has outlasted both these cars in terms of oil leakage.

Pointing out the sludge & damaged engine internals & the clogged oil returns. He stressed the importance of frequent oil changes w/a quality oil & filter. To this day, I change my own oil @ 3500 mls & I've never had engine issues. Same goes w/your lawn mower! Change your oil people. It's cheap Insurance! Thx Scotty for this video.

    I had a 95 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1 for 11 years that I gave up last year because of frame rot and other issues. Ever since I bought the car back in 03 I've changed the oil every 3 months or 3000mi with mainly Castrol GTX 5W30. I let my car idle a lot and didn't drive it as much so the 3 month rule happened more often than you'd think. Even after almost 20 years and at 180k miles the engine still ran smooth and had a lot of power...just everything around it saw better days. It never burned oil or ran rough. Its such an cheap and easy way to keep your engine going. It'll never make sense to me why some people don't do it as often as they should.

    Thanks a lot for your highly informative videos. Last year, I didn't have that much knowledge about automobiles and engines, and then I started the journey in the interesting hobby of digging under the hood. I managed to get the service manual for my Honda Jazz. And I spend hours watching your videos. Yes if you run conventional change it every 3000 to 3500 miles. If you run a full synthetic 7,000 to 10,000 miles. But the most important thing instead of looking at the mileage is to check the condition of the oil. I've been changing my oil for the last 20 years, I have never had problems with the engine other than regular maintenance like timing belts. My car's 2011 and newer have timing chains so I don't even have that issue anymore. I buy the quick release valve oil valves take off the nut and it makes it easy peasy. Change the oil and do tire rotations at the same time to help your car and tires last.

      Where I worked back in the 90’s we had a fleet of old Chevys, & one slow day one of the newer guys decided the fleet was due for an oil change... 5 came out solid... but remained running for another 4 years without any problems. Same with the two 70’s & 83 Chevy truck I owned... like their ad used to say, “Just put gas in & go.” Their bodies had rusted away, or I would have never gotten rid of ‘em. Except I could still run it at idle running with ac on seems to help the engine stay calm... I can even get it up to 50,, As long as I keep the RPM below 2000...You might hear the one knock here and there. But anything above 2000 sounds Similar to this car

  • @JohnL9013
    @JohnL9013 9 років тому +4

    How often you change it also depends on usage. Short trips in cold weather are hard on the oil, especially if you have a carbureted or direct injection engine where fuel dilution is a problem. With long trips in warm weather, the oil will last longer due to decreased blow-by on a per-mile basis.
    Extending your oil changes is a good way to save time and money but oil analysis is necessary to confirm that the viscosity and additives are holding up.
    Otherwise the safest thing to do is change it more often (according to the manufacturer's directive), which can't hurt anything at any rate.

    Much agreed with you Scotty I'm an industrial maintenance mechanic. Hydraulics 101 first thing you learn is that it doesn't matter how fancy your oil if you don't have a filtration system designed to filter out particles down to a few microns and or water as well you will destroy things if you follow the advertised oil lifespan as your oil change. To make a happy medium they sell oil test kits like you have talked about in other videos to send in $20 a piece to determine when the particulate count and oil life reaches a point requiring change. Old school automotive did that when they determined every 3000 miles. Same with tranny fluid you talked about in another of your videos 20,000 miles I think you said. This is how you keep cars trucks and machinery running properly. By following the recommendations of the expert not the salesman

    I'm embarrassed to admit that I once neglected my oil change and went 20,000 km between oil changes. That's 12,500 miles. That was a few years ago and I'm still driving the same car no issues. No knock, tick, spark plugs are clean, it was synthetic oil but nevertheless. I've been diligent changing the oil myself since, every 7,000 k or so, but I've got to think I did lasting damage. We'll see how long it lasts

    It's cheap insurance, personally I change my oil between 3000-5000 miles. Why take the risk with an expensive machine like an engine. I don't buy the manufacturers claims of 10,000 mile plus oil change intervals. Their money isn't on the line, yours is. 😉

      You don´t have to believe anything.. That is what oil analysis are for, 35 bucks can tell you a lot of the condition of the engine and for how long you can push the oil intervals.
      Personally I can go 10K between oil changes using Mobil 1 EP that was Lab Tested and passed with flying colors. Lab Results said the Oil could go even further (Mobil 1 EP is Guaranteed for 15K) so Mobil knows what its saying.
      Also that 10K interval is being done in a 215K Car..

It's usually more expensive there than at Walmart; they carry it at $22.47 or so for 5 quarts the last time I looked, it lasts longer too so I'm not seeing how you mean all this. Now, if you were going to say "My engine leaks with Synthetic even if I use the High Mileage kind" I'd agree that it's best to use Conventional.

NEVER did we change the oil or its filter. At 138,000 miles we sold it running smoothly and no maintenance except for a water pump. It was expendable so we just didn’t care. 318 V8 Dodge.

    I understand that modern oils are much more robust and can go for longer time/distance. But, Scotty brings up a good point. Some manufacturers like Honda have oil life monitors (in Honda's case, the Maintenance Minder system). My 2010 Civic was going 10-12K kms between changes on conventional oil before the light came on. For me, that was about 1 oil change per year. I have since traded that car in, but, looking back, Most manufacturers only needs to get 5 years out of you before the powertrain warranty is up. Do they really care what happens afterwards? Oil changes are still relatively inexpensive. If you're going to keep your car, change out the oil every 3-5K miles on conventional. Cheap insurance.

    Scotty. I know this is an old video, but, what do you think about oil changes by time rather than mileage, or by type of use rather than time? You know several factors are involved when deciding when to replace engine oil. Of course the basic rules are good for most people but since I will love to here a full video just analyzing those factors from your perspective. BTW I love your videos so fun and inforative.

    Hey Scotty, I love your videos; they're very informative. I would just like to say that changing oil every 5-8 thousand miles is virtually unheard of here in Europe. We have many, many cars that achieve 200-300 thousand miles on 12 or 18,000 mile oil changes. Cars which do low miles/short runs definitely need more frequent oil changes but our changes are normally done at least yearly or on miles whichever comes first. My Volvo need 6.5 litres of fully synthetic oil at £10 a litre every 12,000 or yearly ......that's about $100 an oil change - you wouldn't want to change that 2-3 times a year! Are the European oil grades superior? I'd value your opinion! Best Regards from Lincoln, England.

    • @900Yugo

      Volvo in North America specifies 5 to 7k Mile oil changes. Oil in the USA typically costs $4 to $10USD per quart. And when you buy larger 5qt bottles.You can get deals as little as $20 from a retail chain. I changed a friends Volvo with synthetic oil and the total costs about $38 bucks. The German made oil filter for his car costs about $13. Plus, we typically have warmer weather which degrades oil faster. So it only costs about 22 pounds per oil change.

    I agree with Scotty. I purchased a new car in May 2017. I change the oil every 3300 miles. Maybe pass it along to a younger family member.

    I have a 2009 Chevy Malibu with about 115k miles. I change the oil every 4000 miles (moderate amount of highway driving), and have never let the oil monitor drop below 50%. It started throwing an intermittent P0010 cam position error code. I called my mechanic and he said he has seen this before on some variable valve timing engines like my 2.4L Ecotech. He recommended doing an engine oil flush. So, I followed his advice and to my amazement, it cured the intermittent error code. Holly crap! I have been using 5W-30 (recommended) Moble 1 conventional oil in the car since I bought it new. I'll switch to using synthetic and stay with 4000 miles from now on. The oil always looks fairly clean when I drain it. The moral of the story... Don't mess around with putting off oil changes if you have a VVT engine.

    There are so many variables to take into account when deciding when to change the oil in your car such as: last oil change date/ milage since it was last changed. Oil type (conventional/synthetic), your driving habbits/driving distances, seasonal temperature, oil grade and viscocity ratings, the milage of the engine, the amount of oil capacity, fuel type you use. So it's not a one size fits all, another way of knowing is, how your engine is reacting to your inputs. Everytime you change the oil you will notice your engine should perform quite different then before the oil change. A sign that you need an oil change can also be if your engine is being sluggish.

    Oil changes, no matter how often you prefer, must be done to replace used lubricants that can no longer preform their job. Check your oil often, I personally changed out oil sooner than expected due to running the engine harder than normal on occasion.

If you use some super synthetic not available in Walmart with "bypass" oil filtration it can last much much longer but I don't expect everyone to race out to buy what I did (the bypass kit alone cost me about $200.)

    Scotty, do you remember if that oil reeked of gasoline or not? That's usually what does it, small trips to and from the corner market and a daily commute to work less than a mile away from their home.

    I change the oil in my 1992 GMC Sierra pickup truck that I bought new every 5,000 miles. The current mileage on my truck is a little over 395,000 miles, with just routine maintenance and minor repairs on my old truck.

    I have "bollocked" someone not so long ago saying he now only services his car every 2 years to save money - told him it's a false economy and he'll end up paying a lot more in the long run.
    People continually argue (and end up with petty, ignorant, xenophobic, name calling as in a comment thread below) about how often is best to change your oil - changing it every 3k miles and/or 6 months is probably a belt and braces a thing that may well help the engine last longer (more so if you expect to see over 200k miles from it), I mean, it certainly won't hurt. It also really depends upon the engine and your location - if you have a Ford with the 1.6l Citroen turbo diesel engine for example, definitely change it at 5k miles at the most, otherwise it will kill the turbo, then the subsequent replacements. People in very hot or humid/damp areas, or those who do high miles (perhaps hammering along a motorway/highway) will benefit from more frequent changes.
    I have an old Ford manual published in 1969, and that does say every 5k miles or 6 months - Scotty is an "old school" mechanic, so this advice is definitely valid for older cars. One of the reasons for doing every 6 months was to change to oils better suited to winter or summer use, but this is a fairly mute point these days with better multi-grade oils. In normal/average circumstances, changing within the manufacturer's recommendations with a decent oil should see the engine to the end of the car's overall life.
    But anyway, for peace of mind feel free to change your oil more often if you want.
    Personally, I would say no longer than a year or every 6k miles - whichever comes first. Unless you have something older, say 1990 or earlier, for example, then more often.

      I agree, an oil and filter change even a couple times a year is a heck of a lot cheaper than an engine regardless of the vehicle.

      I agree, however, highway miles are easy miles (less shifting, idling), you can go longer on oil if you mainly drive highway miles. But yes, following the manufacture's recommendations in the owner's manual is the key.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 9 років тому +2

      ***** I agree, towing, and stop and go driving are what really deteriorates the oil fast as well as cold starts.

    • @mrman17
      @mrman17 9 років тому +2

      ***** Yeah, that's true - the only thing I would say is that here in the UK it's not uncommon for people to drive at 90mph or even a little higher on motorways, and there are parts of the autobahn in Germany that are unrestricted - someone doing these higher speeds on a regular basis may need more regular changes.
      It's just down to the individual's driving style, their car/engine and so on, really.
      I've not had it done myself, so I don't know how much it costs, but I guess someone could have their oil analysed a couple of times to see how often they need to change their oil.

    • @DarrenBoss1984
      @DarrenBoss1984 9 років тому +1

      mrman17 I totally agree with your statement. My car manual recommends every 10,000 miles or 1 year, what ever is soonest. I drive a Hyundai i10. I don't do 10,000 miles a year so it gets serviced every January. I've had it from new. I had an oil analasys done and it cost me £60. My car is just over 5 years old and is *nearly* at 50,000 miles. Runs as sweet, if not better, than when I first got it.
      Maybe as it gets older I'll change it myself between services, but for now, once a year is good for me!
      Oh and an interesting fact. OUr work Sprinters had their first service, at 32,000 miles!

    This is why newer cars have idiot gauges to let you know when the oil needs changing. There's people out there that just literally goes through cars destroying their engines from not changing their oil. Heck, i want my cars to last forever, it's common sense.. change your oil every 3 months or every 3,000 miles.
    Or I use the synthetic and i don't care about the extra cost when i don't use all the mileage, i just prefer to keep my car running for life and changing it twice a year. Except, i got rust issues on my car. Eventually i might try to fix that myself but i need a garage to do it in. Otherwise i might end up spending $2,000 on having someone do it for me.

    On subject of full synthetic, I bought some Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel oil and a Mobil-1 oil filter. I heard that after an oil change with a diesel, "Don't be surprised if the oil turns black right after the oil change" but over 200 miles after changing it the oil still isn't black! So, I think this Mobil-1 oil and filter combination might be a very good choice!

    Absolutely ludicrous to let a car get to that point due to lack of proper (and inexpensive) maintenance. Dirty oil usually thicks up to so called sludge as the dirt "takes over" the oil. It gets thinner by the introduction of fuel, when for example a ignition coil goes out. That's more likely the case here. Sometimes, there's the rare case, that fuel dilution equals the thickening by soot or dirt.

    No, it's not a waste, because it flows better in cold weather, lubricates better and keeps the engine cleaner and less gummy.
    And I get 100% synthetic on a mail in rebate. Costs about $2.50/quart or less

      Yea, like the manufacturers want their cars to last forever. Do as they say, engine will last past the warranty, but if you keep em ages like I do, then your older engine will burn oil and eventually break down. Ask the dealer when their warranty ends, and that's long before the engine will be worn from dirty oil

    • @dslynx
      @dslynx 9 років тому +2

      Ah, Scotty. I didn't realize you were one of those guys. ;) So you must work for the oil industry saying that changing your oil ever 3k is required, but more frequently is recommended. Oh, and it needs to be the one in this shiny bottle that's 3x the price of the "crappy" stuff. We followed the book on the Chevy Venture and it's 170k and counting. Engine is fine, it's the rest of the van that's falling apart.

      HA, I work for myself and try to keep my customers' cars running forever. I hate changing oil, so rarely do I even do it for my customers, I tell them to do it themselves or go to a jiffy lube place. I'm not making any money off my advice, I'm just keeping engines lasting a LOT longer. And yea, if you're smart, stay away from GM products, their quality aint what it used to be.

      James Zawacki Well, he could be shilling for oil companies.
      Then again, he may be approaching it from conventional wisdom, which says that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
      Engine oil is cheap. A replacement engine is not.
      3k-5k is a reasonable interval to stick with; you get a good balance between the life of the oil and making sure the engine is always kept properly lubricated with clean, stable fluid.

    That engine is fine, just stick a TDI badge on the back! Really is shocking that some people can go that long.
    Dad's the same, he goes about 50,000+ miles without changing his oil, his 2009 Peugeot 207 (with the 1.4L diesel) has 185,000 miles and I believe he's had the oil changed twice. He moans about the cost of oil, but oil is cheaper than a new engine to me! It's not my problem to get involved and take it to a garage for him, so when he complains that its burning oil I just laugh and say "well, you've not maintained it" Surprisingly, the engine runs fine. Little loud, but it's a diesel. Biting point is getting to be high on the clutch now.
    I'd always change the oil in my car once I start driving it, just need to get all the paperwork done. It's a 1997 Toyota so should be good, it's only got 50,000 miles. No rust either, just faded paint, got it really cheap too. :D Oil was changed a year ago, but its done...Maybe 500 miles max since then. Since its been sitting for a few months I'd definitely use new oil, just normal stuff - wouldn't bother with synthetic oil. Thanks for the informative video Scotty

    Old oil also makes a lot of other problems. Engine gasses ALWAYS make their way into being dissolved into the oil. This creates carbonic and sulfuric acid impurities to built up in the engine oil as well, and this will cause even more wear, especially on rings, seals, and any rubber parts.
