  • Today we check in to see how well the black plastic is working in killing the weeds ands their seeds. We also check the temp under the plastic to see how hot it is getting under the plastic.

    I found out by accident but I had to clean off my solar pool cover and laid it out on my lawn to dry for a couple hours and I forgot about it and when I took it off everything underneath was dead

      Yikes! Ya, that heat under the plastic gets brutal.

    Hello,
    Start to finish, how long did you solarize the soil?
    I have an *extremely* aggressive patch of weeds that just seems to come back with a vengeance every time I try to address it, ground kill doesn't seem to work, either.
    I'm considering this process but it's currently early August in Michigan so we only have maybe 6 - 8 weeks of warm weather (consistently >60°F) left.

      I believe we left this plastic on about 8-9 weeks. The longer you leave it on the better. The hotter your temps are under the plastic the better off you will be. I would suggest starting now.

    Can I rotation garden overgrown with grass weeds then cover with clear plastic to kill seeds & roots?

    • @fieldtrippin1
      @fieldtrippin1  2 роки тому +1

      Did you mean rototill? Yes you can. Chop down weeds, till if you can. Cover and cook them. You may need to repeat that step more than once to kill as many seeds as possible and any remaining weeds. Good luck.

    Looking to possibly do this on my hill and replace with a groundcover. Too many weeds and too steep to mow so it never looks nice. You mention clear plastic, which is better clear or opaque?

      The clear (solarization) can work a bit quicker, but I have had plenty of luck using the black plastic (occultation). My climate is hot and the black plastic gets extremely hot and also starves the plants of sunlight. The clear plastic may work better if you live in a cooler climate. Both are decent options. Good luck.

      It could certainly help. I would get started as soon as you can. Trim down all that you can, physically remove some if possible or needed, and start smothering. Once covered, give it plenty of time.

    We just bought a hobby farm and the entire horse paddocks are overgrown with 5ft tall weeds. This is my plan from when we move in until the spring... smother everything, dig it out, and start over. 🤦‍♀️

    How did it go killing off the rhizomes/nuts? Did it work or only kill off the foliage?

    • @fieldtrippin1
      @fieldtrippin1  5 місяців тому +2

      It would roast and destroy nearly all vegetation, rhizomes included if they are at or near the surface. Rhizomes buried deeper down were protected. I would leave covered for a week or two then I remove dead growth and turn/fork/flip the soil to expose more of the rhizomes. This garden bed is currently free of all Bermuda grass and Nutsedge.

    Well... I guess it's a voice reveal.
    I feel that if it was around 5 say 6 PM it would be much hotter

      We checked 2 hours later, 140 degrees. Its only 82 degrees outside today, 105 degrees last week. A 5 pm check on 105 degree day would have been great.
