Gardening Tips for Dealing with Extreme Heat Waves
Переглядів 232Рік тому
If you want the quick answer to dealing with extreme summer heat in your veggie garden: 1. Check watering. For me, this meant increasing the duration of my watering times to get water deeper into the soil.. 2. Add mulch to protect plants roots. 3. Consider adding shade cloth above sensitive plants. 4. Keep plants lightly fed with organic nutrients. 5. Try to avoid over pruning your plants. 6. C...

Does he sell any plants or cuttings?
He may sell plants from time to time. Check out is website for more info. dawn-gardens.com/
I’ve moved here in Placer county from the bay 4 years ago and I just found your channel. Better late than never. I’ll definitely be watching your vids and learn more about gardening in this area.
I was born in the Bay Area. Placer County is a beautiful place. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for taking the time to prepare this video presentation. Great job.
Thanks! It was my pleasure. I might get my hands on some additional footage that shows his gardens through the seasons and I may create an updated version.
Such impressively engaged students! So lucky.
Its an honor to teach kids about plants. I love it.
How does he water this enormous site especially during times of no rain and drought??
I interviewed him for my podcast, Green Acres Garden Podcast. I ask that very question. Short answer, he was able to acquire water rights to a nearby water flume that was created during the gold rush by miners to redirect water for mining. He also uses that water efficiently with drip systems and climate adapted plants.
His episode will drop in a few weeks.
The cypress in the bog looks like a bald cypress (Taxodium distichum). Thanks for the nice video!
You are absolutely correct. Thanks for the help.
Nice weather there for this gorgeous tour! What a dream to have property like this. Thanks for sharing this with us! It's started snowing here where I live up north now so I'm just thinking of what I can grow in my greenhouse during the cold season... I think I need a heater though...? Got a really big planta greenhouse this last spring and omg it's so wonderful to have. Keeps me sane and the family healthy lol. Great video. Hope life is treating you and the family well 🙌🏽
Needing a heater will depend on how cold it gets inside your greenhouse this winter and also on what kinds of plants you wish to grow in your greenhouse. You may be able to get by without it.
One of the most beautiful home gardens that I have ever seen.
I heard lower branches have the sweetest fruit but haven't tried it yet on my citrus. Tree at the end of the video needs food 😁
Mowing or weedwhacking just leaves chopped up rhizomes to sprout anew - even a tiny piece makes new plants, grrrr! DEEP digging to get out most roots helps, but must be repeated pretty often. DO NOT compost what you dig out, just starts more plants ...
thank you for to the point information that i was looking for
I'm just commenting early to comment early. I don't know what to say yet, other than thank you I had no idea. Will edit later.
Great video.
Thanks!
Hope you enjoyed the video. Please check out the update video to see if the tree survived.
Man thats hillarious!
As you can see, it is possible to save a neglected and dying Citrus Tree.
Can you use "suckers" to start another tree or for grafting?
@@KevinSaundersPaperAirplaneGuru I would not use the sucker branches, toss those in your compost pile and use a healthy cutting from the branches above the graft line.
This summer was rough. Felt like I needed to water my trees almost every day. Looking forward to cooler temps!
I Love the logo
Thanks, your logo is cool too.
why is my meyer lemons and leaves starting to have yellow spots and the fruit is droopy
I would first check into how much water the tree is getting. Dig into the soil a bit around your tree, consider how wet or dry your soil is and how deep is the moisture in your soil. Many struggles can be traced back to water. I would also look for signs and evidence of insects. an intense invasion of Scale, for example, can be devastating to a citrus tree. I went through a summer with consistently high temps that stressed out some of my citrus as well. Sunburnt leaves and fruit can happen if the temps and sunshine are too intense.
@@fieldtrippin1 thank you
Thank you
Great video! I pronounce this pepper “habanero” not “habañero” … am I wrong? (I speak Spanish). But very useful video thank you!
Yes, you are probably correct on that one. I am definitely not an expert on Spanish, but I do enjoy the language.
@@fieldtrippin1 yes jalapeño is pronounced with a tilde, but not habanero. Old language and cultural distinction. Keep gardening! Love the channel!
Hi! Mine is a fairly large orange tree. It was once full and gorgeous! It's my dads. It breaks my heart. He's no longer with us. Had many oranges and flowers from it. One half is completely dead, and the other has very few good branches and leaves. One small orange dropped from it the other day. Is it savable? I noticed our landscaper didn't keep up on clearing it, so I have a lot of grass to dig up and remove. We've been getting a lot of rain here in FL. You won't see this but I hope you do. I'd love to send you a photo, but I'll see if I can purchase the same fertilizer and I'll buy compost. I didn't know that's something that's sold. Thank you for your video. ❤
So glad to see this bc mine looks terrible after an unexpected cold night, and then repotting it like 3wks later. I should mention that it was newly bought and about 1.5-2ft tall, so possibly wasn’t aged enough too. All the stems are still green so I’m not too worried yet, but one has not a single leaf lol. Glad I found your video!! Have you found any fertilizer that can be used from the kitchen? I’d rather not get something over the counter, so just curious
Stay hopeful, Citrus can be resilient. Try composting your kitchen scraps and other garden waste if you would like to make your own. I have a few videos on different methods of composting, vermiculture may work for you, plenty of info out there as well. Keep the Citrus in moist but well drained soil, Full to partial sunlight. You got this.
First thumbs up, very surprised but now it’s time!!!
thanks for sharing. i am trying to grow lavendar. would this mix be good for cut lavendar with hormone?
You could try it, but I would cut back on providing the organic fertilizer if you are just trying to get cuttings to form roots. Vermiculite and sphagnum moss could also be introduced. Good luck to you.
starting that process now. Filled 4 of my big trashcans already and only done about 10% of the tree. This is the small tree. So much dead wood on the citrus I cant reach in to get what citrus they do produce.
a dethatcher/scarifier really helps
Click bait! Compost piles catching on fire 🔥 is a serious problem and this video did nothing to educate people on the risks.
Compost piles almost never catch on fire, for more than 99.99% of gardeners its not a serious problem. Massive amounts of stacked hay however can burn and that is concern for farmers. This video is about the heating up of an active "Hot" Compost pile due to bacteria and the processes of decomposition.
@@fieldtrippin1 yes but for that 1 in 10,000 it can be. I have seen it happen after grubbing operations. Multiplied by the number of compost piles out there it results in fires. So few people out there are aware of the danger that when they finally hear about it they put it in the same category as spontaneous human combustion.
Why you take out the seeds?
I like the flavor and texture without the seeds included, but they can be left in if that is your preference. Worth making though, spicy and delicious.
I have four hudge plands but no flowers. It is in a green house interior of BC
Be patient, the bigger the plants get before they flower the larger the crowns can be. My Romanesco always takes a bit longer to fully develop compared to my Broc.
@@fieldtrippin1 Thank you. The GH keeps tomatoes all through the winter so I'll wait.
Pink Bower vine .. you’re welcome 😊
What gravel do you use?
LECA, Light weight Expanded Clay Aggregate. Also called Hydroton
@@fieldtrippin1 thank you so much!
Hello, how can I recover a spider plant with two leaves, but it has good roots...is it possible? thanks if you help me.
Sounds possible to me. Keep it evenly watered in well draining soil. Partial sun could help.
I have a question that seems to have a thousand answers, can you just use a 50/50 mix of perlite and vermiculite?
I would use a mix like that for rooting cuttings and clones.
@@fieldtrippin1 I agree, i just done some seedlings with that combo and felt it needed more so I've added a rich indoor potting mix to the combo and believe a 50/50 of just perlite and vermiculite are too course and baron beyond the seedling stage, future growth would seem slow without the added soil.
I love this. Well done. I’m in zone 7, east coast. Going to see what plants on your list can tolerate my climate. Thanks for the great video.
I still haven't cleared out the differences between vermiculite and zeolite... Any knowledge on these two? Can I use them on the same mix?
I haven't used zeolite myself. To my understanding Zeolite helps retain nutrients in the soil, retains soil moisture, and loosens clay soil. Perlite helps the soil "breath" by allowing air and water to flow through.
🎉🦂🌶️🫑🫠✔️
Did it work ?
It worked well. The garden is packed full of veggies and herbs at the moment. It takes upkeep to maintain the abundant growth. The weeds are now manageable in this garden.
thanks for the update! how is it doing now? can you please do another update for 2024?
coming soon. Thanks.
update update vid?
coming soon. thanks.
@@fieldtrippin1 Nice!! tbh I'm not even into gardening just curious lol
Woah
Was hoping for more of a magic solution
I wish there was a magic solution. Solarize, smother, patience, complete physical removal of remaining material, thick layers of sheet style mulching and consistency. Chemical herbicides are an option, but I like to avoid that option if I can. Best of luck to you.
God make me like that tree with so much fruit that I’m on the group worshiping you
Boreing an not informative. All he talks about is soil an compost an pests. Real dumb video
👏🏻 🍋
Trying roundup weed & grass today in our garden. I am sick of pulling out the rhizomes every week. Hope I don’t kill everything around it.
Late to the comments, but there is a another product to use. The Old Fashioned 20 Mule Team Borax will help kill this awful grass in Northern Lawns.
Loving your videos! I know these are old but they’re really good. Your enthusiasm is brilliant
Thanks!
I put loads of food/green plant waste and Guinea pig and hamster bedding under my wood chip mulch!
What if someone maliciously hacked at your tree? Someone hit my tree on the trunk and it went deep into the trunk. It looks almost like it is dying but leaves still growing on it and suckers with thorns.
Have you tried brewing up used tea leaves and coffee grounds, letting it cool and then slowly pouring it all over the pile? I have issues with my mobility so I can’t always turn my bins but I tried it and it heated everything right up! I have a big sealed container in my kitchen and every time I make a drink, I reuse the leaves or grounds in a spare cup and add it to the container when cool. All my food scraps go in too! I have a couple of piles going and I empty the “brew” over one of the heaps every day
Spent coffee grounds and old tea bags work great in compost piles.
@@fieldtrippin1 they do!
