It's so hard to have a optimistic outlook on cars priced like this in the US. A car that costs 900 dollars would be damaged or need severe repairs or be 20 years old with 200k miles. Folks of the UK are extremely lucky to have such a huge throw away car culture where cars only a few years old are worth nothing. At least nothing compared to prices charged here in the states. I just pulled up prices for MK 6 golf's here in the US. Didn't look long but they are worth about 8k and up. For similar mileage too.
@@baronvonjo1929tbf US cars are a lot more well specced in terms of features than our cars. For example the mk6 golf in the US as far as I know all have larger engines, AC as standard, slightly nicer seats, electric windows, alloy wheels etc. and from what I've heard from my American friend German manufacturers are seen as premium there. Meanwhile in the UK you can get a mk6 golf with no front fog lights, steel wheels with hubcap, no AC a 1.2L 3 cylinder with a whopping 90hp, manual windows etc just a really basic model. Even Kia and Hyundai who came to the US after them do significantly better than VW. Plus all German cars depreciate like a rock here because they have very poor reputations for long term reliability. Many certainly do. But it's not a requirement for a lot of folks is my perception. Idk. Maybe something entirely different. Apologies for the long comment.
@@baronvonjo1929 yh no definitely the car market in the US and Europe is far more expensive than the UK. Actually in Europe prices are equivalent to the US for most cars. In the UK we see German cars as normal but also mostly reliable, mainly because we get the smaller more reliable less complicated engines that the US doesn't (although as Matt mentioned in this video sometimes the small engines like this 1.4 tsi are just as bad on reliability 😂). And so they actually command a premium over similar cars but also because they were more expensive when new. For example a 15 year old BMW 3 series is anywhere between 4 - 8k although you can get one with high miles and some issues for 1 - 3k. While a vauxhall insignia (badged as a Buick regal? In the US) is 1 - 3k and tops at 5k The used market in the UK is also pretty big most people drive used cars and also need cars because most places outside London have terrible public transport or just unreliable public transport or it's just more cost efficient to drive. But people here see cars over 100k miles as ready for the scrapyard and will not consider cars they think are "high mileage" or "bad quality". So cars over 100k miles and cars from manufacturers like the french for example are not desirable to a lot of people. This is changing but it's one of the main reasons why our cars are so cheap. Add to that UK cars don't really have a export market and a lot of cars rust or are neglected (not serviced, run on a shoestring type thing) and those are the other reasons why we have some of the cheapest cars in the world I think.

The rear shocks a common problem? We had a mk7 GTI which needed them replacing at 25k. The mechanic said they'd been changed before! The car did 10 miles a day with one person in it, so not exactly stresed!
Still could have been saved but without any profits, so maybe sell as is to someone who wants a nice project car. Also maybe scan the car before you drive it to the valley and spend money. It's clear time chain is stretched.
Any advice or suggestions on what to look out for in the 1.6 or 2.0L diesel engines on VW Golf mk6’s ? Really good videos so far this year 👌🏼 Thanks Mat !

Easy fix, nothing terminal there. With that mileage unlikely to be stretched timing chain. Why not replace with second hand shocks. Ignition coils are a weakness of golfs, but its usually just one that goes bad. Paint mismatch a lot of people won't care, not big dents or dings there.
People believe that VAG group stuff is good and long lasting, really they are no better than many other makes, but they have a better publicity department. They have somehow made people believe they are brilliant, well Matt, as you know they are not. They rust more than others and for a part with VAG on the box is a lot more than say, Ford or Vauxhall. Oh, by the way, where is the black Transit?,
This car isn't badly built or designed, just neglect and abuse mostly. Seen plenty of these with triple that mileage running great. Rust can be an issue though.
I had a passat which spent more time in the garage than on the road. It was knackered by 70,000 miles! By comparison my fiesta is on 100,000 and still going strong
In the 90s when myself and colleagues had company cars the German ones Passat, a4s were always horrible after 100k chassis and suspension wise. Engines fine. Next came sierra and cavaliers much better than Germans , then Nissan primers and mk1 Laguna were great. Stand out was my primera 2.0. 150k of rep miles still going v strong. It’s why I wont have German cars. Sometimes the y used to do a suspension “refresh” whatever that was and it made a difference. Nice to see your head over heart😅

Ruddy Hell it’s Soft Cell! Just need a Wings CD now to go full-partridge. Classic Golf 6 hatchback squeak. Spray some Graphite spray on the hinges (before scrapping it !)
id say thats the sort of car a newly passed driver should have (i had a similar quality 2002 ford focus as my 1st). ive seen drivers pass their test and borrow/buy such as a BMW that they just cant handle and dont know how to look after properly. just my opinion.
Atleast unlike the previous one it somewhat has a clean interior. This is one of my favourite type of Golf from this era. Unfortunately it didn't last long, sad.

Matt the goat of car UA-cam no arguments
I bought a MK6, 105 bhp, diesel in 2009. A really good, car and incredibly economical over long distance.
A heap of shite with constantly failing injectors
@@Mr330d I sold it on to someone at work who had 7 trouble free years with it.
They sold it on and it was still on the road when I looked it up in 2023.
@@ewaf88 That means nothing. If the injectors fail your choice is to either scrap the golf and pay out for another car or fit injectors most normal sane people would choose to fit the injectors 😂 it’s just pitiful seat decided to fit Siemens injectors to the 1.6 TDI unlike the 2.0 Which got Bosch and much less trouble
@@Mr330d How much extra would the Bosch injectors have cost per car?
WOW The guy out of "I'm still here" has a UA-cam channel!!
Wat
Perfect timing
Going to watch this and then hopefully see brentford spank citeh
They tried.
Please Matt , check the oil level before you start the engine
The rear shocks a common problem? We had a mk7 GTI which needed them replacing at 25k. The mechanic said they'd been changed before! The car did 10 miles a day with one person in it, so not exactly stresed!
The Partridge references alone make your videos worth watching - “Ruddy hell…it’s Soft Cell” 😂😂😂
Sonder is a British mountain bike brand from Alpkit. As a mountain biker it made me smile
Really good videos so far this year 👌🏼
Thanks Mat !
THOSE VALETING GUYS MUST BLOODY LOVE YOU MATT !😂❤🎉🎉
Good to see a sensible head on today Matt , good car for a diy person
Brilliant video, one of the funniest I have seen on UA-cam. I thought you might be onto a winner in the beginning 😂
Glad you enjoyed
Looks great, perfect bangernomics candidate, drive it till it dies! Plenty of years left in that, stick some cheap ebay parts on it - no profit of course if your a dealer like.
I know this for video Purposes but I wouldn’t be touching a car that isn’t mine everywhere till it’s gone for a full valet, when you picked up that 12V and it had hair around it, I felt a bit Yuck. Great video as always.
You should see the state of my 320,000 mile mk6 estate. Not looking forward to presenting that for an MOT soon.
Easy fix, nothing terminal there. With that mileage unlikely to be stretched timing chain. Why not replace with second hand shocks. Ignition coils are a weakness of golfs, but its usually just one that goes bad. Paint mismatch a lot of people won't care, not big dents or dings there.
Cam/crank correlation codes yeah chain is definitely stretched and on its way out. Good dodge
Enjoy these videos, can't wait for you to sell the L322 ! I will keep watching for that one. Dibs.
"Ruddy hell, it's Soft Cell!!"
Classic Partridge 🤗
In the 90s when myself and colleagues had company cars the German ones Passat, a4s were always horrible after 100k chassis and suspension wise. Engines fine. Next came sierra and cavaliers much better than Germans , then Nissan primers and mk1 Laguna were great. Stand out was my primera 2.0. 150k of rep miles still going v strong. It’s why I wont have German cars. Sometimes the y used to do a suspension “refresh” whatever that was and it made a difference. Nice to see your head over heart😅
You are winning. The CD alone!
I clean my 1999 E38, 728i everytime its in for MOT and it passes id never take dirty ,its mint 12 months now no faults ,Ive had it 4 years and its up for sale now £2600,
Good video ! You show good or bad cars but it’s life in the used car market 😊
Came through the area last week and came upon high peak autos so now i know where i need to come to to get a decent car Matt. Bit far from Brighton to Romily but worth the treck
Ministry of Sound!! Yes!
such a shame it was so rubbish! the spec was actually decent! I have a 1.2 TSI 61 reg but i have manual rear windows 🤣 i barely use the back so its not an issue! Shocks always go on golfs, i think its a common problem, i have had both my front ones replaced recently!
Matt!! You built up our hopes only for them to be dashed...again!! Thanks for the entertainment.
Matt’s a dog lover, a fan of Partridge and purchaser of questionably iffy hatchbacks.
I would buy thee a flavia if our paths doth crossed… crossed over (you get the general idea)
I usually grab my OBD 2 when looking at cars.
Aesthetically, the Mk6 Golf is the best looking 👍
Ideal car for the DIY enthusiast. £2k in repairs and then a few years motoring. As with all car repairs, the labour costs make it unviable.
had one of these mk6 golfs new 2010 was 1.6tdi with the 7 speed dsg owned it 3 years had two clutches and numerous gearbox updates in that time ! but was bloody economical and was the last of the lesser golfs to have the proper rear suspension set up everything after just got torsion bar shite!!
the dry clutch dsg was terrible the 6 speed the 2 litres had was far better!!
Ruddy Hell it’s Soft Cell! Just need a Wings CD now to go full-partridge. Classic Golf 6 hatchback squeak. Spray some Graphite spray on the hinges (before scrapping it !)
When you said its been smoked in once or twice and the covered in hairs that really was gross🫣 love your honesty when you do these cheap cars😊
id say thats the sort of car a newly passed driver should have (i had a similar quality 2002 ford focus as my 1st). ive seen drivers pass their test and borrow/buy such as a BMW that they just cant handle and dont know how to look after properly. just my opinion.
The previous owner was clever, leave it dirty so you can't see colour differences,it's on a par with dealers mist for scratches.
Another Partridge quote slipped in! Nice one!
Love your channel Matt! My dad and I always watch it. hi from Sale (M33)
Awesome! Thank you!
The fact that you didn’t clean it for the thumbnail says everything!
Save the massive overspends for something worth saving. It’ll be worth something to someone else as parts and keep other Golf’s going.
I do like the leather colour on your Rangie....
Atleast unlike the previous one it somewhat has a clean interior.
This is one of my favourite type of Golf from this era.
Unfortunately it didn't last long, sad.
First Partridge reference I've noticed in a while! And such a good one, at that!
Lovely stuff
Back o the net !
Sonder is a MTB brand. Maybe a MTB/bike carrier used on the towbar
Hi Matt,
You may not see this but I wondered if you could do a video with the valeting company you use and maybe Jimmy the magician on buffing a car. The cars always look immaculate and it would be good to know if you had just bought a car and wanted that sparkle and shine how it was done. Videos are great thanks
7:24 I do find that MK7 also has this smell. I used have one as a company car and it smelled funny : )
What a CD to find, sounds like my kind of CD. Shame you couldn't do the work and turn it into a courtesy car. Maybe worth selling as spares and repairs, something I would have owned till the end of its life, as I couldn't afford to repair it. Great Video and content.
Here's that rainy day. It was never going to be good news. The Kia Soul looks a bit more exiting.
Legend, thanks man. Love the videos!
Sensible Mat is back Yah !!!!!!
Das Auto for you - legendary VW build quality on show! Got to love these German money pits :D
Ruddy hell it's soft cell. You love Alan!
It does all that to its engine, SOLD. its just what someone was looking for
Oh Matt.... I can't even refer to this as being sensible. It's more like being obvious. Buying a cheap VW Golf.... Then realizing it has lived up to everyones' expectations. As far as my life goes.... Yes, it's about as exciting as yours, Matt. 😢
Ruddy hell it's Soft Cell - love the Alan Partridge quotes... Lol.
I am actually amazed that the rear subframe isn't like swiss cheese. Seems to be quite a common problem on the Mk6
