I see your weird eclectic collection and raise you mine . My oriental garden , a kia sportage mild hybrid, Rav4 , and the two cars they were bought to replace the 180k from new 2.0 dci Qashqai and the E46 m coupe for a bit of panache 😉
I must say the bill was way less than I thought for all what has been done on the car even with a gearbox service. My guess was near £2000 like 1750-1800 for all the work. I live in Jakarta and the MLs I see in here are mostly ML320. Once or twice seen a 430 but not the 500 yet.
Thank you for including the mechanic part! It is so cool to see them explain/work on the car. It's a really good addition to the episode. Please bring in Jimmy the Magician, we need an apearence from him =)

This is the best kind of the videos on this channel: 1. getting a beat car 2. getting it fixed and document the process and 3. showing the final package.
Enjoyed the conversation with the mechanic, seems to know his stuff, the English accent always magnifies the professionalism. I think there’s something inside you wanting to keep her.
I had an ML in 2010 for a couple of years from new. Absolutely loved her. Quite envious of this one. Well worth your time giving her some TLC. A V8 too….. Well done.
I’m with u mate, have always loved these. The chrome wheel carrier back then was so brash n gangster. No other manufacturers came close to it. Mates parents had a ML320 in a darkish green. I’d love one as a dedicated winter hack👌🏻 very rarely seen them out in the wild as well
Suggestion: Road trip to the Mercedes museum and factory in Stuttgart? Quick blast down the autobahn in a 5.0L Merc would also be fun. Thanks for the video.
2 reasons i love this car 1. My dad ownes one in black 2. In my favourite tv show The Wire, this ML was the drug kingpin Avon barksdale's car and it was used alot
That mechanic is your Golden Goose Matt, laid back, confident and after watching the ML service video,he is on top of his game. Would be a Great format to your channel to do 3 part vids, your "I Bought","The Fix","The Body Detail". Keep em coming, best stuff on UA-cam
Wasn't surprised to hear that you are keeping this one to add to your collection. Can't wait for the next video on this to see the transformation on the paint and of the inside. Keep up the good work.
I've always had soft spot for the ML so it's not just you Matt. I've always liked the look of them. I live in Cape Town and my neighbour down the road has two of them, one with the rear wheel carrier and one without. They are becoming classics and are well worth keeping them on the road. Being in a warm dry country without salted roads, most cars here don't rust. I'm glad you've saved this one. Too many cars are being scrapped these days. You're fast becoming the patron saint of saving great cars. Keep doing what you're doing. Your vids are always fun and interesting.
I’ve owned a ML430 for about five years now and I could do with having some bodywork done now too, it’s done 90k miles and I service it myself every year, I’m considering changing it for a L322 4.4 Range Rover but it’s still a great little truck that I’ve grown fond of! Sometimes better the devil you know than the one you don’t! Great video as always mate! Best wishes 👍🏻😎
We follow SPR, and it's great to see the start of the journey for the ML, to then going to Sam's to get serviced and fine tweeks running sweet, we are now subscribed hopfully to see whats next great videos by you and Sam 👌
I miss my old ML as it was like a comfy old pair of slippers with the electric heated seats but rust killed it in the end. It was a lockdown infill after leased golf r went back. JUst dont take those cill covers off, glue the a pillar fabric, watch out for the thermostat and leave the cigarette lighter and armrest sliding covers well alone! If you need a parcel shelf ive still got one that colour in the garage!
You’re not the only one who loves them, I do too. The thing I love is it’s a AMG - but more practical and comfortable to use. I suggest a road trip to Wales, blasting that engine up and down the valleys with mountains in the background, maybe a bit of light off road driving.
Haha i recognise that road, when you turn off from the A20 it looks nice and wide but quickly narrows. Best avoided at busy times, was caught in the narrowest section for nearly half an hour because 2 Luton trucks decided to use it
It looked as if the ML had mis matched tyres (Continental/Hankook). Dunlop Grandtrek TG35's used to be the best, but they stopped making them, I then moved about 10 years ago to Hankook Ventus St's which are fantastic. Great tread pattern, quiet running and long lasting. Great in snow and mud, and shift a lot of water - £123 from Camskill Tyres
Yaaaaay you’re keeping it I thought for sure you would want to resell it , so great full you’re giving it a chance,I mean the sad through is if u would off sold it I think u couldn’t of found a better example with full spec , yaaaaay you’ve made my day saying that you’ll keep it cheers😀!!!!!
I've always loved these. My dad had a ML55 AMG for a while. That thing could shift! Was a bit juicy on the fuel though, but it looked great too! Keep her, Mat, not many about these days! John from London
Lol I had just thought ‘ I bet Matt keeps this one and hey presto’ . IT’s that’s sam old adage FIND ME ANOTHER ONE. I’m pleased for you I’ve always liked them and that 5 litre engine is the only one to have. Thanks for saving it, I hope you’ll be happy together ❤
Another excellent video story of great intrest. Well Matt before we retired to Norway we lived in Kent and a number of our friends and neighbours drove the M.L.often saying it was one of the only 7 seater estate cars. Anyway going on a bit but just to mention we drove to Norby shopping centre and remembered when we spoke last you spent a great summer working with your father on that project . 21:06
I bought mine ML350 few months ago for the same price. Gearbox needed more work due to higher mileage and lack of service. Still needs some TLC. Glad that you keep it! If you can afford fuel consumption those cars are a steal these days or maybe I've got sympathy for W163
I had a ML270 for three years and sold it only because the services were so expensive. I went BMW after that, but I'd be tempted by this ML500 . . . A very enjoyable video this.
One disappointing thing I must say is the lack of the continuation in parts, compared to BMW who literally still stock parts for cars they released over 50 years ago! It really is terrible service especially from a company that sells cars at such a high price point & with so many Mercedes’ still on the road of all ages! We all know why they do it! And if you don’t know why it’s due to the accountants, shareholders etc using the strategy of planned obsolescence, hence why cars and many other products from high end manufacturers are not the quality they once were!
Autoabahn trip like shmee with a classic V*8 why not, first car I ever learnt how to drive was a ML350 of this Gen, 3.8L V6 4 speed autp, black on black with the sun roof bose sound system 6 cd changer, what a banger
W163 is the king of suburban, it is a body on frame and can keep up with proper 4x4 vehicles. I have had 2 of these now is my third but this one is prefacelift 3.2 petrol. I also have petrol 3.5 W166 ML. They are both bulletproof and reliable. Would never choose any other brand than Mercedes ML SUVs, except pickup truck for farm work practicality.
Another future classic rescued and loved by you, it will be nice to see it back to it's former glory, I would have thought a nice road trip for this would be a trip back to the factory in Germany that it came out of, it would give you a chance to cross Europe, blast it down the autobahns, what do you think
I just love the w163 platform, it's cheap to buy, cheap to run, good engines and gearboxes. Body on frame ruggedness. What else would you really need..
I'll never forget Clarkson's excoriating review of the ML when it was launched. A piece of trim from the sunroof fell onto his lap. I share his loathing.

Brilliant video, Matt. 5L!!!! You'd want to be a millionaire to tax, insure, and keep it filled with fuel in Ireland! I actually always liked the shape, too. Really looking forward to the reveal when the paintwork etc is done. Keep these vids coming, please and thank you. 😊
I love the mechanic interview part, would absolutely adore if you could try to fit it in as often as you can (I understand it can't be done every time since, time and all.)
Road trip suggestion Manuelas Wee Bakery in Ardelve, a few miles south of the Skye bridge west coast of Scotland. Amazing pizzas, and pastries ❤ I was on holiday there a few years ago and came across it and we still talk about it today. We’ve been back to Scotland again since and did an 80 mile detour to re-visit 😂
Really enjoyed this episode and it’s great to see another car not gone to the scrap yard. I’ve just given my Mums 2005 Citroen c1 to a family member to start them off with their driving career. Serviced every year and cleaned and loved it for mum and also when she passed away, I took it onboard as well as a 2nd car. People said get rid of it, scrap it. But to me I see that the car has life and still love and driving to give. We are too much of a society to just get rid of things and new cars have a different feeling of driving to older cars. The smells, sounds and being able to actually fix older cars also gives you a buzz. No fancy electronics. Although I also love my new car and not having to get dirty any more lol. Keep the videos coming and cars driving 👍.
It is a great car to add to your personal collection. I have always liked the look of these and I hope to drive one, one day. We need to see Jimmy the magician, and Thameslink valeters the heroes of these videos.
'Apologies if this isn't riveting viewing' ... Matt - your videos are never riveting viewing. It's just you, looking around an old banger you bought for £500. But we still love watching them!
First thing I would do Matt, would be to get rid of that spare wheel carrier, I thing it makes the car more how do you say charv, if you know what I mean.
The 'Holy Trinity' of 4/6/8 cylinder Merc engines were the M111 M112 and M113. The absolute peak of Mercedes engines and the AMG stuff was equally as good. It couldn't last and the replacement M271 272 and 273 are beset with expensive problems.

Great cars these Matt, engines are magic and if you found a great spec with only 45k on the clock it’s a keeper for a few years , do a trip or two and some weekend country trips . I love the sound of the v8 as much as the e38;v8 I have a few years back.
Matt's mechanic is official secrets act. Tameside valeting are the work speaks for us, you don't need to see us. Jimmy the magician is Stig. SPR are brilliant. This is why we love this channel
I just bought a 2000 430 in NZL ,not one warning light on everything works, interior mint,AC cold, cannot belive how good the thing goes offrd, some Cooper mud tyres going on and the factory enormous muffler is going and a stainless snorkel..!
I have the 430 too, it’s a great truck! A little thirsty but that’s to be expected with an old 4x4 4.3 V8…. I hope you enjoy yours best wishes mate 👍🏻😎
The Mercedes service engineer made a great point about how ignoring services and doing every 10,000 miles on a low mileage older car isn't the best way to go.service every two years is best.
You can almost do it instinctively when you don’t do many miles. ‘Every once in a while’ kind of thing. Although it isn’t expensive or hard to ask a mechanic to drop the oil, fill with new and change a few filters, is it?
Perhaps your road trip could be to The Mercedes-Benz HQ in Germany, if you contact them they may let you see what goodies ( old Mercs) they have in their museum
Amazing cars! Been using it as a daily for last 5 years! Mine had been in storage for 13 years so not had much use! Amazing engines and does better MPG than my TD6 L322. 🙂
Great video - watched the SPR autos video just before this. Combination of the two was really interesting. Thanks for uploading: I’d be interested to the what it looks like when paint etc is all done!
These are the ones I love… the 20 odd year old granders bought with heart over head that might just come up trumps with some elbow grease, a tail wind and your fingers crossed. These are your bread and butter videos and all the better for it… back to the old days. Shout out to Jimmy the Magician… if I was still in the north west, he’d be my go-to man, for sure.
I love the W163 MLs. Here in France there's loads of the 4.0 litre diesel V8 models - I am sorely tempted, but know nothing about these engines. Your ML500 looks like a real keeper!
I absolutely love it! You can forget buying an expensive EV. If you want to save the planet buy a good car, look after it and keep it. Mind you it helps when you have found people who you cab trust to work on it. I live in Kent but, the next time my Mercedes needs a full service, i will be taking it to SPR in Stockport. It'll be worth the trip.
So good to see classics and so many interesting cars being given the royal treatment and a second life. Yes, sometimes from the trash can. From abroad I do see it sometimes going to extremes as ten to twenty-year-old cars are expected to be in mint condition by the UK driver. Cheers and best wishes, keep it up!
I fell in love with this generation of ML from 2001 when they appeared in Jurassic park 3 i was only 4 and still remember the ML's being my favorite parts of the movie

I just love the w163 platform, it's cheap to buy, cheap to run, good engines and gearboxes. Body on frame ruggedness. What else would you really need..
I back in the day didn’t mind them but the X5 was the one everyone preferred although I think the ML look great on black
Would really love to see another road trip with your brother and friends. Last one to John o' Groats gave me vibes similar to the original Top Gear!
You can use this SUV in the mountains of Transilvania 😍. Will be a nice holiday 🥃
Used SPR because of your channel great set of guys went above and beyond for my e class.
will be great to see the outcome of this car... I absolutely love this era of ML... especially the very rare ML500
Will you do a vid with your "Jimmy the Magician"? I'd like to see him work considering your regular praises of his work...
"Hey Matt, I have a low mileage 5L V8..."
"I'm on my way" 😊
I'll never forget Clarkson's excoriating review of the ML when it was launched. A piece of trim from the sunroof fell onto his lap. I share his loathing.
Head up the M6, reach Gretna
Teurn left along the A75, keep going till the SW corner of Scotland and enjoy
.....

Romans 6.23
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

What a sweet old thing! So happy you got your hands on it just in time! I do hope you'll keep it in your collection as well. 👍🤠
I like your channel. To the point and well informed. Sick of so called fun car shows. Leave humour to the comedians:) love your show
I like these, someone nearby has an ML500 in that royal blue colour, looks mint too.
What a classic! Would be good to see more video collaborations on the I Bought A Cheap series!
Glad you're keeping it Matt, at least it will be looked after and deservedly so, nice car
First thing I would do Matt, would be to get rid of that spare wheel carrier, I thing it makes the car more how do you say charv, if you know what I mean.
Love people who give a car a 2nd chance! Awesome content.
The 'Holy Trinity' of 4/6/8 cylinder Merc engines were the M111 M112 and M113. The absolute peak of Mercedes engines and the AMG stuff was equally as good. It couldn't last and the replacement M271 272 and 273 are beset with expensive problems.
Matt that’s a cracking ML. Regarding your road trip you have got to go to the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart.
I had the 430 ML. One of those motors I wished I kept. Traveled to stoke from Durham for it. Fast fun family motor with 7 seats!

Great cars these Matt, engines are magic and if you found a great spec with only 45k on the clock it’s a keeper for a few years , do a trip or two and some weekend country trips . I love the sound of the v8 as much as the e38;v8 I have a few years back.
Loving the explanation of the work done by spr autos, please do this in future vids 🙏
I just knew you couldn’t help yourself. However that’s just the charm of something you have a deep passion for . So enjoy it for years to come Matt !😊
I should comment after the video. Lol you are keeping it. Wonder if Jeff Goldblum still has his.
Yeah goto Torquay, a town in Torbay, on the south coast of the county of Devon
cheers, from sydney oz
The Mercedes service engineer made a great point about how ignoring services and doing every 10,000 miles on a low mileage older car isn't the best way to go.service every two years is best.
Not true and it does not matter. I do mine every 5000 but can sometimes take four yrs for that and my old vehiccles all run well
You can almost do it instinctively when you don’t do many miles. ‘Every once in a while’ kind of thing.
Although it isn’t expensive or hard to ask a mechanic to drop the oil, fill with new and change a few filters, is it?
Love the Mercedes ML, Ive got the final version 2015 ML W166 & its been superb over the last 5x years, Great video Matt !
hi matt love the old merc i would 100% be getting it sorted will be such a lovely old thing to own , fantastic
Perhaps your road trip could be to The Mercedes-Benz HQ in Germany, if you contact them they may let you see what goodies ( old Mercs) they have in their museum
I liked this video. Good idea to add the chat with the mechanic. Will get even smoother if you do more of them.
Road trip: The North Coast 500 Scotland - one of the most beautiful roadtrips.
Ghosh....does need a very good valet. I don't like the front styling, looks a bit short, but should look ok cleaned up.
Really enjoyed this one! Can’t wait to see the big reveal. 😃👍🏻
Well found Matt. (Why did high end car makers ever think that froufrou leather on door cards and seats was ever a good look?)
What a machine, talk about cars you don’t see anymore! Nice one Matt for rescuing this beastie. 😊
I don’t know about the looks of this car. I feel like it’s a face only a mother can love, oh and you Matt.
😂
😂😂😂
😂😂
😆😆😆😆
Haha, the reg plate is quite apt, “save” you might not save any money with this one but you’ll be saving another one from the scrapper!
Best video yet, road trip to Stuttgart Mercedes Benz museum and Porsche museum in one town.
Matt I must say I find you very inspirational.
Thanks
Great video Matt. Really enjoyed the bits with the engineer explaining the work that had been done
Loved my former ML320 Petrol .Only needed A Foot brake sensor as brake light stayed on .Traded it for a Fantastic 2005 E 350 sedan.
Definitely a road trip down the Rhine to Stuttgart. Home of Mercedes Benz
Nice shout out for Asturias, where I live! Thanks
Fantastic value from your SPR Autos for all that work! Greta job
