- Building a new lead lined pellet trap for the channel. this one will be used for the shorter ranges. the a4 pellet trap i already have will be used for the longer range targets
its made from some offcuts of scrap coated birch ply and this new version has removeable legs so it can stand in landscape or portrait.
i have a selection of new target cards to give some continuity for testing going forward on the channel including some really nice benchrest cards. hopefully they will look good on film
Now I know why I've been storing the old baking trays and some old lead roof!!! I knew I had a reason, thanks for solving that conundrum! Nice design which has given me ideas. Cheers.
Great idea, people should be warned that pouring lead when even droplets of water are present, the lead will explode and fly in all directions.
A great pellet catcher. The pellets weld themselves to the lead sheet. . .I made a similar one some time ago.
A pleasure to watch. Thanks 👍.
Those yellow and black target play havoc with my eyes. Good luck 🤞.
Yeah I'm not too sure on the yellow ones myself either. Funnily enough staring at the red and black circles makes my eyes go funny and it's hard to focus on them.time will tell once I've actually used them.. I might end up having some of my own design printed 🤔
Really interesting video and a great looking box 👍🏻
Superb job mate! Right, off down to the local church...something tells me their roof needs looking at.😉
Lol!! What are you insinuating?
Great review good job, I made something very similar a pellet catcher
Had to go back to the drawing board. 60yarder the ply was getting damaged with flyers lol 😆 scoping in. so i screwed 2mm steel plate to the ply 15 months later still good 👍
I'll usually run a shot or 2 off just to check I'm somewhere on the card before getting too stuck in. It's annoying shooting the holder up 😆
I've got a load of ali sheet to turn into some much more substantial versions eventually. Tbh I just enjoy making stuff as much as using it..
Brilliant pellet catcher. Made a copy of yours for myself. 👍
Well done, one of the best I've seen, I will substitute the lead back for a thick hanging towel, as to stop the bb's without damaging them so I can reuse them.
As far as the targets, a circle is a circle, obviously the bright yellow ones show up better, for the shooter and the viewer, cheers m8. 🎯♥
When I'm dealing with very small windage corrections, some targets I find are really hard to judge. Almost disorientating to some extent.
I've found a particular style of target that really suits me and the shooting I'm doing on the channel. Will be subject of a video as it's pretty interesting 😉
nice work . but a cardboard box box filled with old clothes wil do the job , lead recover and quiet and easy to move in the field
Agreed.. I like the lead traps as its great being able to see the pellets stuck into it, sometimes the cards get torn up a bit and don't give a true reflection of the groups and being able to glsee them in the lead is very cool
Plus I like melting it all down, I want to turn some recycled h&n pellets into fishing lures eventually 😆
@@tillysgunstocks tape a targetcard on the box
I use large painters tape to fix them
I do this it works. Box will last awhile too
@@HughMahn-o4x I still didn't find a better option for the price ! Haha
Proper job. Re targets, they all look good, but I think the black/yellow will show pellet holes least well. Also, anything with a black bull is just less repeatable and consistency is one of your (and all rifle shooters) themes. Looking forward to the weather improving!
Hi mate, im inclined to agree with the yellow. Tbh I got those ones for a funky thumbnail but I will try them all out and see what I find suits me best for consistency. I may end up getting some of my own design printed eventually.
Made mine same as yours works great no noise at all
Hi, thank you. Love the idea and the trouble you went to.
Find it amusing that somebody who can afford Festool, DeWalt and Makita makes homemade targets. Its like a millionaire travelling cattle class.
Us plebs will need to us Ryobi. 😃
I just love making things, it's a curse at times but that's just the way I am..Any excuse to mess about in the shed. I've got plans for a MK3 version now too 😆
Just use a rubbermaid office-sized trash can filled with rubber mulch.
Periodically wrap it with shrink wrap and switch sides to preserve the structural integrity of the trash can.
I have shot over 4,000 rounds into mine and had zero problems. (.22 cal, ~800 fps)
The mulch is made from chunks of recycled tires and will never wear out.
Careful - that benchrest target will be the slippy slope for you. We started a 25 yard outdoor Benchrest at the club - shoot 3 cards of 8 targets - best 2 cards score. Made a few folk realise hitting even a 15mm reducer HFT/FT target is very different to obliterating 2mm circles and doing it 16 times .. it has fast become very serious :) Great pellet trap
The @airability lot will be laughing at my poor br efforts 😂
I'm tempted to get some printed double the size for 50yds and no wind flags other than maybe a windicator..
Currently I'm really back in love with the sport and pushing myself again. Not at the level I was a few years back but its coming around pretty quick.
I dont really feel the urge for competition anymore. Filming on the channel is enough for me right now 😀
Excellent video 👍
great job mate excellent trap . and some great targets there for testing all look like they will do the job 👍 good to see the hand has healed up well
Hi mate, im still struggling with my hand tbh. Using the trigger on the jigsaw and router is still really painful and ofcourse I'm a lefty 🙄 but atleast I can get some bits done now
Everytime I see you using a rooter I remember that I don't know how to use one 😁
_I wished I did tho._
Interesting idea but it is alot of work compared to the cardboard & clothes or plastic bin and rubber mulch versions...
_But it sure looks a bit better in the yard!_
It's a nice way to combine both my hobbies Into one video.. making overly complex things that could be much simpler 😆
Great target you have made and I like the 3rd target but will be best to see how it looks with the pellet holes I guess, cool Share Thanks
Hi mate as soon as the weather breaks I'll be out testing the targets. I have a feeling that I'm going to be more consistent with a smaller bull. Maybe I'll end up getting some of my own design printed eventually. It's surprising how the shape/size of a target can affect our consistency. Definitely worthy of a video
@Tillys Gunstocks I am always looking out for your videos you have a great way of explaining/teaching the more complicated topics of the sport and your DIY projects are top notch. KUDOS to you 👏
NOTE -- The pellet resistance/durability of the trap is GREATLY IMPROVED by the containing sheet pan backing the lead plate as a pellet stop. If you do as I did and assume that 1/4" of sheet lead would be sufficient by itself....well it gets eaten up with the high power stuff. 1/2" (maybe 3/8") thick for free hung lead plates.
That's brilliant ...
Cheers mate, used it for the first time today worked great with the legs on😎
Looking forward to seeing your review of the the AA xti. watched a review on it last night, beautiful rifle , love the in-built hamster design, accuracy wasn't shown as anything outstanding but I'm sure you'll show it off at its best. Enjoyed this video by the way, I always like to see the build video's 👍🏻
The weather has been terrible here so stuck in the shed,so had to make something to get my fix 😆
We both know the moment the xti arrives it'll probably be 50mph winds and snow for a month..always happens when I get new stuff
Very nice
Excellent
Surprised you've not used NSRA 1989 Pattern 2510 BR15 - 18 Targets for 25 yards, and NSRA Pattern 50M10BR17 - 18 Targets for 50 metres, and tried 1001 BR15 - 18 McQueen Targets for 100 yards.
Since they would give you a recognised standard for accuracy.
Mind you, I also use 14cm 10m Air Rifle Targets, and 6 yard Bell Targets as well, but only with 5 ft/lbs.
Nice 👍😉
Hi, very nice. How noisy is it? Any actual video of this trap with sound? 🤔
i made one with plumbers putty instead of lead
Nice! I did a follow up video to this one, testing the putty lining out. It's good gear 😉
wow great video, do you have a template that i could use for cutting the board, wood work not my best but would love to have a go at it. keep up the informative videos they are excellent
Very cool....Now, how much lead will I need for my pan..🤔
Have you ever hit one of the magnets?
Funnily enough I did recently testing some of the comedy pellets.
Clipped the edge and it just did a flip and ended up where it was.😉
I hope this isn't an April fools joke! 😂
I dont know🤔 could be..?
Hi, As a rough guide how thick is the lead when melted ?
Hi mate, this one is around 6-7mm thick but anything over 4mm works well and if you can go thicker still it'll only be a good thing 😉
Thanks 👍
Great idea, thanks for sharing 👍
I made a 12-🎉15mm thick “lead” plate from wheel weights. A3 size.
Screwed it to an EU pallet and used 45x145 lumber as a frame/stray pellet catcher. Love your idea with trays n magnets.
I’ll use your design and make 3 or 4 A4 sized traps from the lead I have. Happy days 😆
Great catcher - really effective. I'm off to the workshop to make one up! I've tried to find the targets you show, after googling the name, but apparently the website is no longer operational...any alternatives?
Better get to local church for some lead ...
@Shivadow I probly can shoot a lead lettering worth of pellets while you are sitting in jail 😂
lol remind me not to have a bacon sarnie at yours. .
its good for sub 12ftlb only though.
With half inch or more lead thickness they work well up around 40ftlb. I've not seen one used higher than that but with thicker lead I'd expect it to be fine
How thick should the lead be in the trap .
As thick as you can get it really but anything over 6mm(1/4" for the Americans watching 😉 )works great
How thick is the lead in the baking tray?
This one's about 7mm, but if you can go thicker it'll be better still.
Why would you want to shoot boring paper unless you’re sighting in your scope :( no noise is no fun
Regarding lead, if you hung a lead fishing weight as a spinner / reactive target, would it stop the pellet like the tray or not?
I dont know, but im curious to try it though now 😆
I dont think it would unless it was a direct strike and not a glancing blow..dunno I'll try it sometime
A lead spinner?
The spinner would need to be quite light for a sub 12 pellet strike to spin it.
I've used pieces of lead flashings suspended on wire to good effect.
.... 4 Bull card
That red and black made my eyes go funny 😆
I'm curious now which of the targets I'm most accurate on, some get obscured some are just hard to concentrate on. Dunno interesting subject though..
Nice Work !........Can believe how clean your tools are. I look after mine but they are pretty dirty. where you get the targets btw ?
I'm a little pedantic when it comes to keeping the tooling in good shape. Apart from the really old chisels, they are 80odd years old and I like them to look their age but with a perfect edge.
Yt doesn't like sharing links of stuff, but if you go in close at the end the manufacturer is printed on them 😉
Hi, very nice. How noisy is it? Any actual video of this trap with sound? 🤔
I've used them in pretty much every video since I built them, it's just a nice dull thud on impact. Also very useful for checking group sizes as the pellets stick into the lead backstop. 😉
@@tillysgunstocks Nice! OK, I will proceed with this solution then.
