I have used a pellet catching box with plumber's putty. Then someone in the GTA forum mentioned using a box full of rubber mulch. I couldn't have been happier. You can easily recover the deformed pellets at the bottom of the box. I just change the target paper each time I want to get some lead therapy.
I switched to rubber mulch about a year ago, love the stuff. As already mentioned it’s easy to recover the lead and yes it’s definitely heavier but I setup the box and leave it at whatever distance I set it up.
I also use rubber mulch. I buy a bag for $7 from Lowe's and fill a metal trap with a faceplate to hold in the mulch. Then as the faceplate dissipates I replace the damage with puddy. When the mulch fills after thousands of rounds I turn the whole trap upside down in the trash can and start over. About every 6 months.
I've been using duct seal compound for years. It's non hardening, so it doesn't form a crust like plumbers putty does when exposed to air. It's more expensive and denser, but I've used the same lump for about 10 years now. A 5lb pug is 2.5x10.5x4", so it covers a 10" square to a 1" depth.
I used what we call "Duct Seal" used by electrical construction contractors in the USA, it's also a non hardening putty but pretty dense, it 'catches' the projectiles and is very quiet.
My issue with plumber putty was it broke down into little pieces after a while. Maybe due to it hardening slightly or being hit a lot in a close area. Did you have this issue wth duct seal?
@@seanismboi it's not the same thing as plumbers putty 'duct Seal' is used in the electrical trade, look in the electrical aisle of the big box home improvement stores.
Hi Tilly...I use old books bought from charity shops from 50p to £1 each. Best for me is one that is say 10-12 inch by 8 inch by 1.5 + inch thick (thicker the better) then bind it really tight in duct tape. You can put around 500-1000 pellets into either side (spaced out) when it starts to fluff up just put a single strip of duct tape over the fluffed area or when it starts to bulge from pellet build up, just hammer flat, add strip of tape over and carry on. When it cant take any more repair or hold any more pellets, cut the duct tape and recover all your pellets if you want them back! Works great!
Here in the states there is a recycled rubber “garden mulch” (Vigoro is the brand I used) that you can stuff in a cardboard box…my 30ft/lb 22 Revere doesn’t penetrate more than 1 1/4”. Very quiet, reusable, easy to sort out the shot pellets. After a while just tape on a new front piece of cardboard over the original…stick on new targets ….low cost, i made 6-7 of them and have them at various distances yo practice field target
Wow I’d never thought of that. We use homemade wooden target boxes and the back eventually gets blasted through so this is great……and the wife is about to mysteriously lose a baking tray😂😂😂
The putty is a good idea, I have a think metal box with a 12mm steal plate at 45 degrees, super quiet because the metal is so think it doesn’t resonate
I have been using a shadow box from the craft store that is about 2 inches deep. I put a thin steel plate in the back and pack the rest with duct seal and it works great. I can practice 10 meter pistol in an apartment with no issues.

It is a nice thud when lead strikes lead. I've got a few 6mm thick lead sheet off cuts behind my target in the pellet catcher and does a wonderful job at collecting the pellets and deadening the sound.
I used to use old shagpile carpet with a folded tee shirt behind, lost some pellets to double strikes, but most could be recovered, only had to re-flare the pellet skirts a bit to re use them
I built a back stop of sandbags I bought from my local builders merchants.. its lasted some years but eventually the plastic holding the sand will give way but it's still quiet .. :)
Another brilliant video 👍 and such a great idea. think I’ll get a Stanley knife and cut the plastic tub to extricate the putty. Been using fairly thin lead in my pellet trap. Certainly makes a difference but this looks an even better plan 😁
😆😆 I nearly did exactly that and chopped the tubs open.. but I have this thing about useful small tubs, buckets and the likes.. they end up with fishing bait and random junk in,so I wanted to keep them intact 😆 I was really surprised how well the putty worked tbh..
having cut up bed sheets hanging them 1/4" apart and a 7-10 layers thick works good and it's quiet . i had that setup in my basement inside a cardboard box.
I did the same thing-works great, and quiet! Old leftover automotive carpet, free hanging 12" or so behind the paper targets, inside a home made particle board box standing on wheels for easy movement. I collect the spent pellets and melt them down for adding to my wheel weights for casting bullets for my pistols.
Hi mate, I'll hopefully do a side by side against the lead when I get chance. I've got some ideas for a new target box which this might just be the perfect filling media... 😉
Welcome mats were great also. The ones with the rubber backs cut in half. 6 pieces or three mats has been stopping my 35 ft lb 22 caliber air rifle pellets. I don't reuse the lead though.
Hi mate, another good vide thanx. This putty is also known as "Plumbers Mait", think that might be a trade name? I used to be a plumber, so used a lot of this stuff over the years. I also use it now in one of my small metal funnel shaped pellet catchers, and it makes the pellet hits much quieter. One thing to note is that this stuff will sag downwards after a while, if leaving it out. So the bottom level will slowly get thicker! So you will have to repack it so that its even every now and again. But apart from that its a good backing material.
I was really surprised mate, I can imagine it will sag a little if left stood upright. I'll make a fresh trap to use just the putty and we can see how it holds up longer term
Personally, I bought a 300mm cube of HARD sponge, and stuck my targets on the outside. Using some tape it all stays together and the pellets go about 1-2cm into the foam. After a year I revolve the cube and use another side. Just make sure you're using a hard foam. Bloomin silent and costs about £20 for 6 years use.
The problem I found with using putty was retrieval and disposal of the lead. There were so many pellets in the putty it was impossible to separate them out and I had a lump of lead held together by putty . So what to do with a toxic lead ball held together with goop? Not allowed to put it in the trash, not allowed to put it in recycling... only place is a State weigh station 30 miles round trip from where I live, where you can dispose of toxic chemicals, paints, car batteries etc. and pay a $15 disposal fee....Back to using the heavy duty, noisy old bullet trap where I can gather the lead and donate it to my friends who make "cast bullets" for their black powder guns. For BB's, I use a cardboard box stuffed with old T shirts, the BB's are recoverable and when they bounce off the front, it's time for a new gas cylinder. 😁
I am so cheap. I use a scrap cabinet without doors as a pellet trap. As a backstop its rear is padded with scrap rug instead of putty or lead. I set up a retail 17x17 centimeters pellet trap inside of it for target work on target cards and I can suspend all kinds of reactive targets all around it for plinking fun. There is only a little brooming up the pellets and debris after the session because the rug will obviously not absorb the pellets, but all in all it works very well for a very quiet zero budget solution.
I think on the channel here,i will be carrying on with the lead for the same reasons. Although for garden shooting the putty is a bit quieter. It's funny being able to pick out a big splat of pellets and show them to my mates. Showing off 😆
As an avid pellet gun shooter but also a physician I cringed when you handled the lead without proper barrier protection namely gloves, eye protection and mask. The non lead metals will react to form soluble lead salts which will coat your hands absorb through your skin but also transfer to your mouth, nose and eyes from your hands. The plumbers putty is a better idea.
Great idea to use plumbers putty. I have just replaced the modelling clay in mine with it. I got a knife and down the side and across the bottom of the tub to make extraction easier.
If you are trying for as quiet as you can get it, dimple the surface with the face of a meat tenderizer mallet. The angled surfaces reduce the "smack" of impact a surprising amount, at least for indoor shooting. Outdoor may not be worth the bother, other than for pride and experimental purposes.
This putty (and above mentioned duct seal) seems to need more maintenance than the lead trap. Especially when using a thicker slab of lead. And of course you are at that UK 12fpe limit. My breakbarrel is over 16fpe. And my PCP is about 25fpe.
I reckon you are right, it may well need more maintenance long term.. I'm going to build another target box that I can use it for some longer term testing. I'll probably get a few of my mates over to have a go with the high power stuff. I'd be really curious how it holds up to .22lr 🤔
@@tillysgunstocksjust a thought that occurred to me just now... Putting this putty on the wood board around the paper target might work brilliantly to trap the fliers. And keep the wood intact.

I wonder if you could use cornflour mixed with olive oil, made to the consistency of plasticine so it wont flow. Cornflour in water solidifies in response to shock, so it should arrest a pellet. Or put wet sand in a 20 litre bag-in-box.
Will plasticine work as got loads of old suff lol just got my first air pistol a week ago. As I know the kids plasticine (modeling clay) clay they call it now, do not set but goes hard. Nice video 😊
That looks very promissing. I wonder what it will do with cold/hot weather. would it work frozen ;). would it be ok with FAC power... Loads of possible video's :). I'mcCurrently using sand filled traps that I run through a mesh to get the lead out. works fine but tie consuming i gues
What a great idea I think I'll have a mess about with this. Off topic, but what are you doing to your triggers, video after video ive wondered how you've got such sensitivity
There's no real secrets or trickery with my triggers. I like a shortish first stage and all the others are set pretty safe. Nothing overly light pull wise. The biggest improvements come from matching the grip types to the trigger, in terms of rake and contact points it can make a huge difference so a nice relaxed wrist and trigger hand. It aids consistency and reduces potential pulled shots.😉
Huh this is actually a really neat idea! I’m getting into shooting and was concerned plinking a steel target would annoy the neighbours and have been looking for an alternative. Saw one guy use a bag of sand but I can imagine if you shot it a lot it would fall apart when you go to move it and end up with sand everywhere! In terms of disposing of used pellets etc, what’s the best way to get rid while ensuring you don’t end up containing the environment? Would your locks recycling centre/tip have a special container to throw all those lead pellets in?
Hi mate, whatever you do dont throw the lead away... It's relatively speaking quite valuable. If you have no use for it, any local fisherman or women would likely exchange for beers 😉
Has me wondering if a cm or two of this placed on top of ( in front of 🤔 ) my lead lined box, may quieten it down further, while still letting the pellets through to add to the lead backstop. Ps. Fac power levels.
I don't know... But id sure like to know how it goes if you do try it 😉

Couldn’t help but laugh at the prospect of you getting stopped at a roadside police checkpoint with a tray of what appears to be Semtex on your passenger seat 🤣 and a gun on the back seat.
Hey, you ever use the targets that your aim point is below a box or circle and your group is above so you dont lose the aimpoint being shot out? Work great for testing group sizes.
Yep I do regularly, or just don't readjust to a perfect zero between batches. Although the group won't necessarily be on the target ,the testing is accurate. Ofcourse can be adjusted back to where it needs to be once testing is done.. I don't actually set up most my rigs on the cross hairs. I'll usually set them up at a convenient range on a different aimpoint on the scope. 😉
Where do you get the target cards from? Can find 17x17cm or 14x14cm single targets and the same with 5 targets marked on one card but not anything more let alone 36
Was in the process of making one of these and then realised putty actually hardens when exposed to air and eventually becomes brittle. So maybe plasticine may be better, or would plasticine be too soft?
I've finally bust through the back of this one mate, I reckon an extra steel plate in the back and 1" thick putty would be ok for typical fact air stuff. Maybe 🤔
Hi mate, yes Im going to make a fresh trap and fill it with the putty for some long term testing. This particular putty is more like the duct seal than say a plumbers mait putty. It shouldn't dry out(hopefully...) But I'll let you all know how it goes long term 😉
Hi mate. It does get a little softer as it warms up. Not much of a problem in the UK 😆 I've lots of experimenting to do with it. It's a fascinating material to work with
I didn't watch the whole video. Just wanted to mention in case you didn't: lead is extremely hazardous. You shouldn't be melting it or handling it or digging around in it if there are better solutions (and there are). Don't go led. I'll be trying rubber mulch first.
Thanks for this, but a quick question: at 1:13, did you say "catapults"? I don't mean to doubt you, but I don't think this pellet trap would work with a catapult unless it's being used as ammunition. Never mind, I did a quick google and I see what happened. We call them slingshots in the states, although calling them catapults makes the whole David and Goliath story make more sense. "And he smote Goliath in the head with a catapult". Yep, that makes sense to me.
Hiya, yep one of those things that doesn't translate quite the same over the Atlantic.. catapult =slingshot ,although some people do call them slingshots here... 😉
I just got a 3D printer and a Brother ScanNCut to make some Airgun stuff .Since getting my first gun making targets and other things is nearly as much fun as shooting
How much duct seal do you think I would need for a .22 caliber shooting at 34 foot pounds , about 870 fps with a H & N 21.14 gr pellet ? Thank You, Bill from South Carolina U S A
Hi Bill, I really couldn't be sure, however looking at how deep the h&n 8s went in, I'd have an educated guess at maybe 30mm ( 1-1/4") might be a good starting point. I'd sure love to know if you try it out though..
In the UK we will not have a problem with POWER and damage as we are limited to a paltry childlike 12ftlbs . In the 70s my air rifle shipped to me with 20 ftlbs . Morons changed the law

Hi mate, whatever you do dont throw the lead away... It's relatively speaking quite valuable. If you have no use for it, any local fisherman or women would likely exchange for beers 😉
Great video once again👍
Cheers Andy, was a fun one to make 😉
With the pellets only penetrating a few mm could you not have done the whole thing with a thinner layer of putty?
Has me wondering if a cm or two of this placed on top of ( in front of 🤔 ) my lead lined box, may quieten it down further, while still letting the pellets through to add to the lead backstop.
Ps. Fac power levels.
I don't know... But id sure like to know how it goes if you do try it 😉
Couldn’t help but laugh at the prospect of you getting stopped at a roadside police checkpoint with a tray of what appears to be Semtex on your passenger seat 🤣 and a gun on the back seat.
A great concept and works really well, now we just need a resetting target 🤔🤔
I'm working on it mate... Got a few ideas that are fairly elaborate and a couple that can be done with a basic DIY toolkit😉
Flue jointing compound would be a much better option than putty..I’ve been using it for years
Where do you get the target cards from? Can find 17x17cm or 14x14cm single targets and the same with 5 targets marked on one card but not anything more let alone 36
I use the putty in the 17cmx17cm pellet traps it is so quiet
Could you use the lead that roofers use in sheets? They also make a non leaded alternative.
The normal lead flashing would work absolutely fine mate, can't say I've seen the pb free stuff as yet though,so can't say for sure🤔
Was in the process of making one of these and then realised putty actually hardens when exposed to air and eventually becomes brittle. So maybe plasticine may be better, or would plasticine be too soft?
Hi! looks great. Do you think this could work with FAC air rifles ?
I've finally bust through the back of this one mate, I reckon an extra steel plate in the back and 1" thick putty would be ok for typical fact air stuff. Maybe 🤔
@@tillysgunstocks Alright, imma give that a try. Been looking for that plumbers putty but couldn't find it. Probably a different name over here
@@edkcustoms possibly duct seal mate?
Could you do an update video to tell us how this holds up. Will it develop a crust, does it shrink and fall out the pan?
Hi mate, yes Im going to make a fresh trap and fill it with the putty for some long term testing. This particular putty is more like the duct seal than say a plumbers mait putty. It shouldn't dry out(hopefully...) But I'll let you all know how it goes long term 😉
Maybe warming the putty up in a pan of hot water?
you can use electrician cell putty
I think i might economise and use a thinner layer. I wonder if that would work well. Does the putty get softer with warmth?
Hi mate. It does get a little softer as it warms up. Not much of a problem in the UK 😆
I've lots of experimenting to do with it. It's a fascinating material to work with
I bought a roll of roofing lead from a plumbing supplies, not cheap but enough to be able to fold it double.( I don't like carrying it too far 😵💫)
On the plus side it should last indefinitely mate. It's also super satisfying re melting it all flat and watching it all harden back up..
Shoe box full of wine corks for me.haven’t open it up yet to see what’s going on inside .
Interesting idea..I'd be curious to see whats happening in the box..
@@tillysgunstocks will have a look tomorrow don’t expect anything interesting will let you know.
That's not non-newtonian material. But the project is great.
I didn't watch the whole video. Just wanted to mention in case you didn't: lead is extremely hazardous. You shouldn't be melting it or handling it or digging around in it if there are better solutions (and there are). Don't go led. I'll be trying rubber mulch first.
Why not put the putty in over the lead?
Thank you, I will let you know when I build it. Things are popping here, so it might take me a couple of weeks. All the best Bill@@tillysgunstocks
What about carpet ?
What's s this rifle??
can you put the putty in the microwave for a few seconds to make it easier to work with?
It definitely softens up in the sun, I dont think I'd risk putting it in the microwave though 🫣 knowing my luck it'd burst Into flames 🤣
8 months late to the party.... Will that putty slump if it's warm?
I never leave it out mate long term but it was fine today at 30°c . Although literally today I have finally shot through it after 8 months or so 😉
i wonder how it would stand up to 22lr :P
I don't know but I'd sure like to find out. Ill get a few of my mates to try it with the large cals at some point
Will it handle the 35 foot pounds of energy that I produce in USA ? 😂
Old carpet Zero noise
It's ok I 've found it
What gun is that
It's an airmaks katran c 😉
@@tillysgunstocks nice
In the UK we will not have a problem with POWER and damage as we are limited to a paltry childlike 12ftlbs . In the 70s my air rifle shipped to me with 20 ftlbs . Morons changed the law
Duct seal
👍😉🇳🇱
Box full of used clothes all you got to do i replace the box
If it's silent then how can it be more silent. Oxymoron
