After watching this video, I am so glad I never bought the scan and cut! That is too many steps! And I absolutely love my Accuquilt Go Big Electric Cutter!!! I have owned it since 2017. I HIGHLY recommend it! And NO, it doesn’t waste a lot of fabric!!!
It does not waste a lot of fabric if you precut your fabric a half inch bigger than what you need on the die.
With The Accuquilt system the possibilities are ENDLESS!!! And if you watch for their sales you’ll get some great deals! I did! Less time cutting, more time quilting! Go Accuquilt!!!

Watching the scan n cut cutting rectangles makes me want to grab a rotary cutter and mat. Accuquilt wins for me, although the dies are expensive.

Each machine has a different purpose. The AccuQuilt is made for the sole purpose of cutting quilt pieces and shapes. The Scan N Cut is made for scanning objects and cutting them to precision. You can scan an appliqué drawing and cut it perfectly. You can also cut paper and vinyl. You can’t just cut any shape of your liking in an AccuQuilt. You are restricted to the dies they sell. They are not interchangeable machines. There’s a lot of information lacking in this comparison.

This is a great starting point, but wait, there’s more… I have all of the Accuquilt Go! Cutters (not the Studios) and the newest Scan n Cut DX330. For “Artistic” quilters, the Scan n Cut is the most versatile, for sure. I also love that I can use my SnC to scan any of my Accuquilt appliqué dies and play with the sizes to create custom appliqué. On the other hand, the Accuquilt Go! and GoBig! Cutter can cut an entire quilt in a couple of hours, six layers at a time for all of the pieces on a given block. I cut an entire queen size Double Wedding Ring Quilt (>1,600 pieces) in my RV in two days on the manual GO! And you can’t beat the strip dies on an Accuquilt cutter. So a beginning quilter will probably be happier on the Manual GO! And the 8” Mix & Match Cube. I have made scores of quilts using my Accuquilt cutters and wouldn’t be without them! The Scan n Cut by comparison, is limited to one layer of fabric at a cut, although you can have multiple and varied objects per cut. The learning curve on the SnC much higher, but I love the machine for the flexibility it gives me. If you are not very “Tech Savy” go for the Accuquilt first. There are a few dies that can only be used on the GOBig! But all of the strip dies and block dies can be used on the Manual GO! Hope this adds something for potential buyers!

Hey Tammi, Great review of these 2 products. I had thought about purchasing a Cricut Maker to cut fabric but at my age learning new software on the computer was not something I cared to learn. I'm so glad I got the AccuQuilt cutter. I didn't even know about the Brother Scan and Cut for fabric. 😊
Hey Tammy! You made an excellent choice. I hear the Cricut Maker has glitchy software and isn’t using friendly. I bought the Scan N Cut before I bought the GoBig because I thought it would suffice, but quickly found out it was way too much work for quilt blocks. So that’s when I got the GoBig. I also do machine embroidery, so I use the Scan N Cut to cut out pieces for my applique designs 😊
I really enjoy listening to you on your videos. You have fewer verbal tics than most you-tubers. Your comparison of the two machines is very well done and has given me a lot of information to use to compare the two machines. Ultimately, I'm not sure that time is saved using either machine compared to hand cutting. Most definitely one ends up with a lot of waste with either machine.

Great comparison video! I have the AccuQuilt Go and a Brother SDX230Di and find that they both have their uses for me. I use my AccuQuilt for regular quilt blocks and the Scan n Cut for appliqués. I also have the Cricut Maker that I found to be lacking for quilting for me, as I wanted to use it for cutting out appliqués and I did figure out a way to do it but the Scan n Cut is so much easier to use.
I love the idea of using the Scan and Cut for appliques.

I would hesitate to get a current Brother anything. I had/have a Brother INNOVIS 1500D embroidery sewing machine, and every few months it was in the shop to get a "spring" replaced (at no charge, but it was inconvenient.) My 30 year old Brother sewing machine still works like a charm.

With the dies, you just lay the fabric (up yo 6 layers) on the die, top with the pad and roll it through.
I've had a scanncut2, this is why I sold it.
You have to either irin on a stabilizsr or starch your fabrics to make them stiff. Then, you need to program you desugn in (or scan it) abd tweak it until its the size you want ....then cut it.
I realize the dies are pricey (i wait for good sales), but for me, thd Accuquilt is do much easier and by far faster.

I have both and enjoy both, scan n cut allows yo make Manu different size cuts.

I have two Accuquilt cutters. The medium size and the mini. The issue I have with these two machine are you cannot make 10” blocks. You have to purchase the Go Big. Which is large and heavy.
Plus, you are limited, with any of the Accquilt machines, to the size of any block. There is very few dies that come in more than one size.
Then you have cost of mat replacements.
Shipping with AccQuilt Company is expensive. Few stores in my area sell the dies or cutting mats.
ScanNCut, I like the idea of being able to make blocks any size. Moreover, you don’t have keep buying dies.
Can you program other designs?
The ScanNCut, it is more work to get a design cut out but in the long run you have more choices.
I am going to look into purchasing the machine. Thanks for the information.
Hi Constance😊. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The Scan N Cut is a good option if you have the patience. Yes there are many more quilt blocks with the SDX325 version. Check out the AllBrands UA-cam channel. Courtney is a master at showing you how to use all the features of the Scan N Cut. Great video. I don't think a digital cutter is very useful for cutting patchwork but is great for applique. The rotary cutter or the Accuquilt Go is a better option. I'm in a group who are exploring the uses of digital cutters for applique . I'd love to see how you use the Scan and cut for applique. I have a Cricut Maker and Silhouette Cameo. I love how the Cricut cuts fabric but I prefer the software for the Silhouette.
My biggest problem is how to get a pdf or scanned pattern to give me a clean cut.

Both machines are good for specific things. I have both, and there are so many things that the scan n cut does that you cannot do with the AccuQuilt. The AccuQuilt can only function with dies, this is not the case with the scan n cut.

I'm wondering how the GO! cuts the fabric.
And how often does the Brother cutter blade need replacing and how much does it cost (the circling blade)?
Hello & thank you for your questions 😊. The Go! Cuts just as well as the other cutters. The Go! Will accommodate larger dies compared to the Go!Me, so you have more die options with the Go! The “rotary” blade (the circle one) for the Scan N cut costs approximately $40 for the blade alone and approximately $60 for the initial kit. I haven’t needed to replace my rotary blade yet. But I don’t use the machine frequently. I pretty much use it to cut appliqué pieces. I hope this helps😊 I’ll see you in the next video😊👋🏽

Brother Scan and Cut cuts fabrics. Patterns can be scanned into machine then cut it. Appliqué technique is great for this. Patterns with many small pieces would be great for this machine.
Accuquilt requires the dies (shapes) to cut. Dies are expensive.
They are different cutters.

Quilting has become a very expensive hobby. Years ago, my MIL used to make quilts all winter. She used fabric from old clothes and clothes that were given to her to make her quilts. She never purchased any fabric. How things have changed.
Thanks for sharing your story 😊. Yes, quilting can be a very expensive hobby. I’ve seen many quilters “Upcycle” fabric/materials to use in their quilts. And most of the quilting community are very skilled at using rotary cutters, acrylic templates, and rulers. Those are very cost effective ways to enjoy the quilting craft. There’s room for all of us no matter which methods we choose. I appreciate your comment 😊

Does the Scan and cut cut the 2&1/2" Strips?
Hi Alice😊. Thanks for your question. No it does not. However, AccuQuilt makes a 2 1/2” strip die for all their cutters even the GoMe! The 2 1/2” strip die is my #1 favorite strip die because it is so versatile and makes cutting binding strips an absolute breeze. Hope this helps. I’ll see you in the next video 😊👋🏽
@@TammisStitches Yes, I just bought the Accuquilt Go Big Electric (because of my arm injury) and I can see how quickly the cost of dies are adding up. Several years ago I thought a Scan and Cut would be what I wanted but didn't look deep enough into it. After seeing your Video, I'm thinking maybe that would have been a much better choice for me. Oh dear, I just received my 2&1/2" die. I guess I can save my pennies again for the Scan and Cut. Thank you for the information and your Video. 🌻
You’re right, purchasing the dies adds up over time. Continue to save money so that you can buy the Scan N Cut. In the meantime, maximize the use of what you have so that you don’t have buyers remorse 😞. Stay tuned, my goal is to come up with inspiring projects 😊
How many layers will the the scan and cut, cut
Hi & thanks for your question 😊. The Scan M Cut off cuts one layer at a time. Versus the AccuQuilt which can cut up to six layers of quilting cotton at a time. Make sure you’re subscribed. I have more in the pipeline with these machines. I’ll see you in my next video 😊👋🏽
It will usually cut just one layer at a time, but the mat is 12x12", so you can fit lots of shapes on the area before you cut and you can place them quite close together, so there is very little fabric waste - with pre-cuts you could easily lay 4 charm squares, or a layer cake square onto the mat and use the screen to fill them with multiple shapes. I'm in the middle of making a pineapple style quilt for my son and I fussy cut out the owls from the piece of fabric I was using and then I was also able to cut up some other pieces by filling in the spaces around them - I do fussy cutting with the fabric right side up as it shows up better on the screen. I have a slightly older machine the SDX125, but mine doesn't have the embroidery capability, I use mine either for cutting fabric, or paper crafting. I hope that helps you a bit.
The rotary blade works best for quilting fabric for piecing and the other fabric blade, which acts more like a scalpel, or craft knife works well for materials like fabrics that have had fusible web attached to the back for applique. I also use my standard auto blade for things like leather, cork, or ultrasuede. The pointed tool used in the video is mostly used for weeding vinyl, or lifting the corners of the materials just enough to get your fingers, or spatula underneath. It was interesting to see the comparison between the two machines, I feel that both do slightly different things, the Scan n cut is good if you have a small area to work in, mine fits on one end of my desk and my sewing machine at the other, the smaller accuquilt machines may be more portable.
I have an Accuquilt GO, it's a manual hand crank & much less expensive than the HO BIG machine. Still, the dies can be expensive and the matts don't last as long as you would hope. This suits my needs.

I have the Accuquilt Go Big electric cutter. I have watched for their sales and have gotten some really good buys. So happy with it! Just watch for a sale when you need more mats. I think they last for a decent amount of time.
In my opinion, the Accuquilt system is the best bang for your buck and quicker to use.

I own the Accuquilt Go , the electric and the manual one. If you are an avid quilter the accuquilt is a much better option. They always have sales so you can get an opportunity to purchase without paying retail or also purchase from eBay. The scan n cut is more for small time quilt projects. If you are regular quilter cutting fabric I would not use scan and cut. You could just also just invest in the Go cube die set to avoid having to purchase a lot of dies unless you do a lot of applique.
For the Brother, why couldn't you cut your fabric to the size in one strip as it's layed out on the display screen? That would surely cut down on scraps.

@TammisStitches I'm new to quilting, but definitely not new to die cutting machines. Since you're able to move the images on the display screen, are you able to select more than one at a time to move them? If so, you can move the images; still cut the fabric in one piece and lay it on the mat how it shows on the screen; that will allow you to wear the sticky down more evenly across the whole mat.
@TammisStitches ** moving the images as a single grouping would be easier to keep aligned than moving each one, one at a time and trying to align back up perfectly

@TammisStitches are you able to have more than section of a project or whatever you're making on the display to scan and cut at once? For example if you're making a Sunbonnet Sue, can you have her pieced out so you can lay out multiple different fabrics on the mat to have multiple shapes cut at once? If so that would absolutely save time. I did that all the time with my Silhouette and eClips 2 when card making or making 3d items.
You don’t iron your fabric first? I thought you had to iron first???

Here on this channel, I do what works for me and my projects. Not what I’m “supposed” to do. I bought a scan n cut and gave up after many tries. It's now collecting dust. Too much trouble to make it work. I was and remain disappointed

Thanks for the observation 😊. Unfortunately I’m a one woman show and don’t have a dedicated camera person. So when I film, there’s a camera between myself and the equipment. That makes it challenging for me to conserve the most fabric while attempting to demonstrate how to use the equipment. My goal in the videos is to share my experiences vs perfection with techniques. I appreciate your feedback 😊
