  • As a quilter / fabric crafter, this is why I use the Brother Scan-N-Cut for cutting fabric applique pieces vs. other cutting machines. This is only my opinion and I'm not being paid or compensated in any way.

    everything you were saying was happening to me. I too purchased a silhouette cameo and now have a scan n cut. would never go back to using silhouette. the scan feature is what draws me to the scan n cut. I purchased from abroad and paid shipping just to get the latest model with wifi at that time. No regrets what so ever of scan n cut. Now I am a proud owner of the simply applique software. learnt quite a lot from your videos already. THANK YOU

    After I was gifted a Brother Scan N Cut 3 years ago, I watched Julie's videos and the Alanda Craft videos, all on UA-cam, to learn more about how it worked. Invaluable! I chose not to take the Alanda Craft online class. I felt like I got enough from the free videos that were available then. My original cutting machine was a Scan N Cut and I love it for its scanning feature. But when Cricut came out with the Maker and its rotary blade I made the switch to a Maker and later on to a Silhouette Cameo 4 with its rotary blade because of the more advanced features in the Silhouette Software. Now I am back to useing the Scan N Cut since they too have created a rotary blade for their SDX machines.
    Creating svg cut files is much, much easier than you make it out to be in this video for anyone who already owns either the Cricut or the Cameo. It does require you to scan your paper patterns using a combo printer rather than right on your Scan N Cut. However, Cricut or Silhoette software can easily turn that scan into a cut file. No need to go out and purchase a Scan N Cut just because of its scanning feature.

    • @traceybartlam7737
      @traceybartlam7737 20 днів тому

      Silhouette software is so good. Way better than Cricut software however I think Cricut Maker with the rotary wheel is definitely the best to cut fabric. It works so well and without the weird hooks and loops the Cameo rotary wheel needs in the software because it’s not geared like the Cricut rotary blade. If people have business edition of Silhouette Studio they can export svg files to cut on a Cricut Maker.

You're a girl after my own heart. If you haven't bought Simply Applique yet, hold off on the next go at the Quilt Diva. Glad hubby came through the surgery okay. I just wanted to pass on a little bit of knowledge that might help some with the Cricut Maker. I purchased my Maker when it first came out and paid around $400 for it then. I sew and also do vinyl work for my hubby. If you have a printer that scans documents and uploads them to your computer, you can also scan in pictures to your Cricut Maker. I do it all the time. I scan in the picture to my computer. I open my my paint program (or whatever art program comes with your computer) and save the picture as PNG or a JPeg. I can then upload this picture in my Cricut Design Space Program. As long as it has solid lines (Like how you went over your dashed lines) you can easily upload and save as a cutting file or a print and cut file.

    People need to understand that some versions of the Scan n Cut DO NOT let you create SVG files. Julie Fei-Fan Balzer has a video showing how to create an SVG file from them FCM file that is the type created by Scan n Cut machines. Alandacraft has lots of videos on You Tube but their best stuff is through their courses. They are two sweet ladies from Australia, which is behind the US in terms of getting access to the machines.

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  2 роки тому +1

      I took all their courses from AlandaCraft when I first got my original SNC. That's where I learned it all. Their classes are well worth every penny. The SNC's ability to create svgs totally depends on the original file so it's never a sure thing.

    My husband had both of those procedures but at different times. He had a anesthesia pump in for 3 days with the abdominal hernia. He was back at work in 3 days. The hernia in the groin did not us the pump and he had a lot more pain. He was back at work again in 3 days but experiencing much more pain. He was also 5 years older. So, don't know if the location of the procedure, the age or the lack of the anesthesia pump caused the difference in the pain levels. I'm very lucky. My husband is not a demanding or difficult patient. Good luck.

    You enabled me! But I'm a dork and I think I bought the wrong one. I got the older one instead of the DX because I didn't watch the presentation. But I think the only thing different is the DX has the auto-depth feature for cutting whereas the one I ordered you have to manually adjust the depth. I didn't realize all this when I ordered. I was just looking for the one with the best package of goodies added compared to other places on the internet. There's a "deep cut" blade available so I think I might purchase later if I want to cut leather or felt. I'd wanted a cutting machine like this for some time. And was leaning towards a Cricut because that's the one I heard most about. But I didn't realize it didn't "scan n cut"! I just hope my old Bernina that also embroiders has a usb port. I haven't embroidered on it in years because they were constantly upgrading the software/hardware and it was $500+ every time and I got fed up with that.

I scan patterns through my printer and convert to svg. Not a big deal. I have the Scan and cut 2 but it was not a easy machine to learn. The maker I was up and cutting vinyl right away. Hi Becky, love the quilt you are doing ❤ and thankyou for the run down here with the program software. I have a SnC and LOVE it. May I ask for advice re the TACK down stitch. I have an older Janome computerized embroidery machine. Still working beautifully 🙂
    Embroidery files for purchased online these days, they have the TACK down stitch which I have never had in previous years before, will my machine do this TACK down stitch which all these files use now. Regards Jenny

    • @PowerToolsWithThread
      @PowerToolsWithThread  5 років тому +1

      You know Jenny? I'm not sure but I think it should. I'm not a digitizer, but now that I've been playing with Simply Applique, I see that the tack down stitch is part of the entire design file. If the design has been digitized as an applique that includes the tack down, then the machine will read it as an additional color change, even if you don't change thread colors. In my program, by default the placement is in black, the tack down in red, and the top stitch is in green (colors don't really matter...only that they change). On my shamrock design, I tried to delete the tack down stitch and I couldn't. It's the color change that tells the machine to stop so you can remove the hoop to trim away the excess fabric. So now, instead of just having two color changes in each file (placement & final), today's applique designs have three color changes (placement, tack down, & final). I've only been doing applique for about 8 years so I was unaware that the tack down is a new feature. I guess in the past they just wanted you to guess where to put your fabric, then it would create a line for you to trim around. Adding the extra tack down step in the middle removes the guess work of where to put the fabric. Now with the placement stitch, as long as your fabric covers all the design, you're good to go and then you trim around the tack down. And now that I think about it, I bet it's the placement stitch that is new vs. the tack down. The tack down has always been there, but adding the placement in the first step just tells you where to put your fabric vs. you guessing. How many times have you put fabric down and didn't have enough? Creating the placement stitch first removes the guesswork. Hope that makes sense! Sorry if I'm being confusing.

      I just saw a video on the DX which is the newest model and there's a side-by-side comparison video link below. There are two versions of the Scan N Cut 2 - the CM350 and the CM650. The 350 is not wireless so I don't think I would buy it for myself (because I'm lazy) and I don't care to move files via USB from laptop to the machine. I'd rather download directly from the Canvas cloud to the machine, and you can't do that with the 350. But you have to get what works in your budget. I would think the prices for the 650 will drop soon now that the DX is out so you might want to wait. See 2nd link for details on the SNC2 which was posted before the DX was released.

      When the SNC saves the file, it also creates an FCM file format. You can import that FCM into a software called Simply Applique and that software will create the embroidery file. Check out my videos by searching on You Tube for Simply Applique to see how it works. Thanks for watching!

      Yes! I've cut many of the Kimberbell embroidery designs on vinyl. This machine is perfect for cutting vinyl for t-shirts too.

    Does it have to be a print off or can it be a drawing?

    Hi Becky- Which Scan n Cut do you have? Is it one of the DX versions? There are so many editions it’s hard to figure out which is one that works ok without buying more than a Quilter needs- any insight would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

      I have the SDX225. The SDX225F comes with the gold fabric blade and mat so that will work for you too. I had to buy my gold blade/mat extra. Please check with Allbrands. They can help you if you don't have a dealer nearby. (Non-affiliate link) www.allbrands.com/products/98318-brother-scanncut-sdx225f-12x24in-scanner-cutter-2

    Bought myself the brand new DX model on HSN yesterday. I have an older model. Can’t wait to cut without making blade adjustments!

      Yay! Good for you! I haven't had an opportunity yet to see that new model in action. I always do a test cut to make sure I'm not cutting through my mat or not deep enough to cut the fabric through the backing I ironed on. We're going to have fun!

    Glad your hubby is cranky, that means he is healing. You & I have a lot in common. I was a WAF between 1970 and 1973. Any how, how big does the Scan &Cut cut? Will it cut fabric with Pellon SF 101 fusible ironed on the back? I make a lot of bags and that would help.

    I have a big shot and you buy the dies and cut out those and they work great. I just watched a video onpoint-tv for the circuit, big shot and another machine. What you are talking about is to confusing. Are these going to be applique pieces? I bought sewing machines from them.

      Yes, the shamrock mug rug will be applique. But you can just embroider the shamrock if you want too.

      The other lady is Julie Fey-Fan Balzer on UA-cam. If you just search on UA-cam for the Brother Scan N Cut, her videos will come up. She talks mostly about paper crafters, but she shows you how to learn your way around on the screen of the machine so all of her videos are helpful. Now go get that SNC out of the box!

    I just bought the Brother Scan n Cut DX230Disney (I think that’s the right # 😂) for $824 on sale this last December! Watching all I can on this very thing! Also, I’m looking for a long arm and embroidery machine if anyone wants to sell theirs! Thanks!

      LOL!! Yes, we bought him down in Mexico on a trip one time. I love him! He keeps an eye on me in my sewing room. :) I thought the ceiling was the perfect place for him. During warm weather, my backyard is full of geckos!

    Unfortunately my husband has to deal with doctors, nurses and hospital stays quite often. I agree, husbands are pretty awful patients.
