  • In this first video of mine I'll bring you along with this overview of my work to create this custom fairing for my motorcycle.
    This is a part of a broader project to personalize this motorcycle to my needs.
    The motorcycle is a 1993 Honda NX 650 Dominator.

    what kind of fiber did you use? great job BTW

    • @pgproductions4432
      @pgproductions4432  4 роки тому

      I used 2 kinds of glassfiber: 390 g/m^2 and 160 g/m^2, normal square pattern cloth. Resin used is epoxy with some black dye

    Just started working on mine today. I was wondering if you have any trouble with your handlebars / brake hitting the windhsield when you turn in all the way.

    • @pgproductions4432
      @pgproductions4432  4 роки тому +1

      It does barely touch, I had to play with handlebars and lever angles. Mine touches on the choke lever.
      Using a pattern or a cardboard template to figure stuff out is necessary IMO.
      Good luck and post some pictures when you are finished =)

    Could you please tell me wich fiberglass cloth did you put first? 390 or 160 g/m2? Wich one leaves the best finish? Thank you very much!! Excellent video!!

      at 3:23 I start with the thin stuff, the second layer is heavy, 3rd is light and last is heavy
      there's no actual reason I put them like that, as I said before I'm a hobbyist, my knowledge in the field is non existent...

    • @ericperiot5242
      @ericperiot5242 4 роки тому +1

      @@pgproductions4432 When you do a part in composite you should better make a symetrical sandwich. If not you will have deformation during drying especially for large parts. The thinner the first layer is the best finish you will have. For example in your case the best is to do : thin ; heavy ; heavy ; thin.

    How long do you think this took from start to finish in work hours?
    I would love to do this but need to commute on my dominator :/

    • @pgproductions4432

      It is difficult to say... my bike was still a work in progress at the time. It was about 15 - 20 hours total. Keep in mind that I used 24h epoxy, so between each resin use there's about a day for the stuff to harden.

  • @peteraugust5295

    What did you use to glue the original ABS Mask and your fiberglas parts together?
    What you got their might be the best looking domi on the planet haha

    • @pgproductions4432
      @pgproductions4432  4 роки тому

      @ 5:29 you can see the process:
      1. sand the paint away to the raw ABS plastic
      2. "melt" the fiberglass into the plastic using acetone (ABS melts with acetone). with this method the fiberglass sheet gets embedded in the ABS
      3. the epoxy resin will bond to the fiberglass mesh bonded with the plastic resulting in a solid part. to bond fiberglass parts together you have to clean both surfaces and sand them, maybe add filler to the resin if the surfaces don't fit perfectly.
      thanks =)

    • @peteraugust5295
      @peteraugust5295 4 роки тому

      @@pgproductions4432 Alright, so it was infact aceton. Thanks.
      Really impressive build. Have you thought about making a mold from your mask? I am pretty sure you could sell those as a kit easily.
