Definitely. Your average Joe would just assume the 3050 6GB has less VRAM than the 3050 8GB while otherwise being the same, when that isn't remotely the case upon further investigation.

I 100% agree with you on the 3050, it has a place. I feel until the Intel A series start turning up on the surplus market, the 3050 is going to be the best option for more modern office computers to game with. Over the last few years there have been so few low profile cards on the market that it has been tough. 1650s still sell for well over $100 in my area, especially low profile versions. I have bought some great Optiplex type systems recently for very little, a 9th Gen i5, with NVME and 8GB of ram was $80, I got a Lenovo Office minitower for $100 with a 10th Gen i7, 512GB NVME and 16GB of memory. Throwing a 3050 would give you a very powerful gaming PC for less than $300.a used A380 would put it at as little as $180.

Not the same prices in the UK, but damn close. You can get an Optiplex MT with 8th and 9th gen i5s for £140-170 with a 20% off code from certain sellers on ebay, 8 or 16GB of RAM and 240/256GB SSDs. Slap in a £159 RTX 3050 6GB and its a solid build already. I would just recommend more storage.

  • @SSubZero

Last year I refurb'd this same model Dell. Note they DO take NVMe m.2's (it's just below the CPU there). I sorta wish the 3050 6GB was available at the time, as I ended up buying a used RTX A2000 for a bit more money, and it's stuck with the Quadro drivers which aren't quite as gamer-friendly.

Video Idea: PC build using as many used parts from friends, only unused stuff for free, as you can. The stuff they pulled out of their rig and have set on a shelf in the closet, or accumulated randomly, or oem bits like coolers when they used aftermarket. --- If someone needs a functional case, some slower or older ram, misc fans, oem coolers, etc ... Well, I have enough of that stuff sitting in boxes and bins that I'd happily give it to a friend just to clear out some space. If they saved $100 or more they might not have as fancy looking of a system but they could spend that money elsewhere for more performance. A buddy just contacted me asking when I wanted to grab the ram I let him borrow for troubleshooting. I didn't even remember he had it, haha.

Hey Ozi, thank you for another great video on older tech. I still have my old 3rd platform, I did upgrade the i5 3470 to an i7 3770. The motherboard is an Intel DH61WW, I believe it was from some office computer, but the layout is pretty standard compared to these proprietary motherboards.
Ram is limited to 16gb at 1600mhz and has some slots for expansion. I am running a Gigabyte GTX 950 single fan card on it, but would like to upgrade that at some point if possible, and eventually into a smaller case to make it a little more compact.
I would love to see a video where you dive into even older hardware, just to show they are still capable machines, but I'm aware not for modern titles, but maybe for older games or even retro games like a emulation machine.
That being said, and know what mobo, ram, and CPU my old system runs, what GPU would you say would be perfect for it without bottlenecking anything to high heavens?

Interesting... you mentioned the 4th Gen Optiplex, and this looks to use the same power supply. That means the XE2 365 watt power supply might work in this system and it has a 6-pin PCIe power connection. What an interesting little system for a entry level build, with a decent CPU, and some upgrade path and should destroy the 4790. The is pretty awesome! However, I don't agree about the i7 9700 as it can still hold it's own against the R5 5600. Granted, that 5600 can be upgraded to an X 3D part and leave it in the dust.

I put a 4070 in a Dell Optiplex 9010 just for fun. I did not make a video about it, because it did not perform as well as I might have expected.

im curious, why are you using fsr on the rasterized tests when it can use DLSS?

I would recommend new thermal compound on the CPU, just because the machine isn't new. Won't hurt.

to think that the og 3050 is a lot faster than this version and you can get it for less is incredible

May i ask why you didn't use dlss in your initial testing?
Does Fsr 2.1 work better when RTX is off or something?

Mixing a CPU with PCI-E Gen3 lanes with a GPU with PCI-E Gen4 lanes will always result in a bottleneck... still can't understand why people keep on doing this and then complain about the low FPS in gaming...

so about my pc in performance for $300 seems like a pretty good deal, though i have the i5 8500 and a 1660 super. definitely a more than capable gaming machine :)

We need more of these case sizes in the custom landscape. I'm tired of seeing huge Micro ATX cases that actually require expensive Mini ITX components to work. I know graphic cards have gotten huge, but the reason people opt for smaller form factors is to actually get something compact, not to purchase pricey components. Anyways, rant over 😂

I have both 3050's in ASUS dual fan guise. The 6gb I have paired with a Ryzen 5 1600 and it works very well. However, what I did notice is the sound coming from the card. It's louder than the 8gb, to the point that I've used MSI Afterburner to reduce the fan speed from 68% to 30-40%. Did you notice any loud noise from this card? Maybe mine is defective.

I wonder if a i9 9900k would fit into that slot and motherboard, that would be enough for a rtx 4070 and keep this alive for at least 5 more years
