Not much into streamers or flies, but I do tie up all my own Marabou Crappie jigs, and do my hook dressings on in-lines, spoons, etc. that I mold/make up. I know where you were coming from on the quality of the product aspect, and the last order I placed was for blood quills as a trial. They were amazingly different and a lot easier to tie in. Don't know where you are in the Ozarks, but I lived in Branson West/Reeds Spring area for 8 1/2 years and loved it. 4 lakes to fish, in such a close proximity, and many more within a short drive not counting the rivers and creeks. Largemouth, Smallmouth, Trout, and just about anything a fisherman could ask for. Table Rock and Tanneycomo were the bomb. Simply loved it and wish I was still there. But I'm only a few hours away here in OkieLand, and we have some jaw droppin' good waters here as well.
That dub brush tip just changed my tying life...so simple and amazing
How about a video on different types of glues, UV resins, Sally Hansen's, super glue etc and the specific situations to use them in? For example, attaching eyes - UV? Super glue? Both?

i like to use a tooth brush to comb the marabou just like you did. that was a nice table top it sounded like you were scratching up.

Loving this series! That dubbing brush trick is slick!! I imagine one that would be helpful to a lot of people is setting dumbbell eyes. I see a lot of guys struggle to do it.

Great tip on brushing out the ugly feathers
Typically, I am a guy that discards bad feathers. But there are almost as many bad feathers in a pack of marabou as there are good ones!

Great info, Brian. A video in bucktail techniques would be pretty helpful as well. Reverse tying, flairing, Buford style heads, or any techniques for larger predator flies.

@@flyfishingtheozarksnewby question. Can you only get 1 wooly bigger tail out of a Marabou or can you get more working up the sides. The tutorials I have seen their just taking the tip. I don't like wasting material
@soldier4christ172 Typically, using the tip will give a cleaner tail. You could probably get 2 or 3 Tails out of most Marabou feathers if you pull the fibers off the sides, but they usually aren't 'as' clean.......the thing is----the fish don't care either way.😎

Fantastic video, material quality is so important. I had marabou which was fine for tails but junk for palmering.
I had to replace it all with some Select grade.

Another great video with the details you don't get elsewhere. Between this, Kelly, and Gunter, a tier has all they need. I really liked the comment near the end about the types of Marabou. One suggestion might be a bit more detail on when somebody might want to consider alternatives to blood quills. I struggled with this a bit in the beginning of tying streamers.
Marabou is one of my favorite materials for streamers and intruders it gives these flys great movement and can help build a nice Silhouette.problem is getting good marabou. It seems like no matter how well you pic the materials in the bag you end up with at least 30% that’s just not usable . I am lucky enough to have a friend who owns a fly shop and is a great tier to get a some giant bags of marabou that was pretty much all quality feathers . Makes a big difference as you say when tying .

I hate when everyone says to take it out the package. Us guys that have no fly shops cant! Gotta rely on a good fly shop to send quality materials. The reputable ones I'd say do a great job as they don't bag the materials themselves

Do you know from where on the chicken the marabou comes? Inquiring minds would like to know? Good video, and I've got to get down that way soon it's been too long. Some of my best memories fishing with my dad are on the White, Current and Norfork rivers. He's gone now but I've still got his boat. Thanks for the instruction and bringing back some memories.
Most of the current marabou that we have comes from Turkey butts. :)

Other than Deer hair (which is coming). How about the different types of Palmer chenille. UV, micro, filler, etc.

@@flyfishingtheozarks yeah, Brian. Examples... When you Palmer it then some of it gets trapped.... Complex twist.... Touching turns vs open turns. A lot of people struggle with it
Just sub'd. You teach well, I'm a beginner, and feathers have been a puzzlement to me. This clears up a lot..... But also Palmering is a ? I see how to apply it for body, but I see it's also used with wire, but seems to be a mimic of a bug body... I see it used, but no explanation. Not you, others, really not explaining a profile build of the why's, just the how.
Marabou, you explained, stem, thick or thin, tips, but I saw a lot of wasted marabou for a very short tail, and a big ass marabou feather being wasted. The snip was a good lesson, twist and cut. What about "chickapou" as smaller marabou for small jigs 1/4 oz to as little as 1/80 oz? Being beginner, I'm on a steep learning curve, lol!

Palmering = Wrapping, most commonly talked about with hackles, but can be done with rabbit strips, or other materials.
There will always be some wasted material, just part of the process.
I am going to talk about profiles, and proper material placement for streamers in a video very soon.

Surprised, never saw anybody pick through bags of feathers at the shop close to me.
I haven't tied in over 45 years. Been working on supplies, etc. I have 2 different vises now and now I remember faintly tying from the tipoff feather, not the thick part. Each fly requires different technique. How do I know who has good quality capes and marabou online? I live over 2 hours away from nearest fly shop. Any recommendations? Much appreciated and thanks for the videp

All marabou will Palmer, it just depends on the dimensions of the fly. If you are palmering on a small fly, then you can use regular, x-select marabou, I used blood quills for this video because it is a little longer and showed the technique better.

How do you get a fluffy marabou? Often times you find feathers with stringy tips which lead to ugly bugger tails. The fluff is down towards the butt of the feather. I’ve seen people snip off the stringy tips with a straight edge or their fingers; I have a hard time doing that. Other methods? Thanks
Open the bag at the shop before you buy, if at all possible. If ordering online, stay away from the "wooly bugger" marabou.
@@flyfishingtheozarks Hmm…another guy said the « woolly bugger » marabou is what I want, it has tips that have plenty of barbules up each feather so they are not stringy.
@@cachi-7878 The way most marabou works is the very end of the quill is the straight, stringy part of the feather. The farther down the quill you go, the more fluff you get. Wooly Bugger marabou is a super short quill, so by the time you get down the quill to the fluffy stuff, those fibers are usually pretty short. I use blood quills, and extra-select marabou the most.
