    For those interested, you can download the back issues of ‘PA Angler’ as pdf’s for future reference and reading at your leisure.
    They go back as far as the early 1930’s, and area great source of info from days gone by. And who knows….. that old stuff might be the difference.
    Let’s face it - fish today see plenty of craft foam and synthetic fiber. But they may NOT have seen the old tricks.

      davhutton, thanks for the information. Going to have to do some down loading. I really enjoy reading the older books and magazine articles. Almost can say a history/ book nerd. But I definitely agree with you on how much modern materials the fish see. Changing things up to old-school patterns and materials can definitely make the difference between a fun day and a great day!!!

    Good morning Matt. Enjoyed watching you tie the streamer this morning. I’m glad you don’t edit out the footage when something isn’t going exactly the way you want. It’s nice to show us that it happens to even seasoned tiers like yourself. It’s great you were able to find time to get out fishing. Thanks for taking us fishing with you too. That was a real nice Brown. I often hear “ that’s a nice wild trout” when watching some of the videos. How do you tell the difference between a wild trout and a stocked one? Time for another ☕️. Take care Matt.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks John! The Savage isn’t stocked below the dam so everything in this stretch is wild. But in waters where the stocked and native might intermingle, a sure sign of hatchery fish is that they’re usually a bit beat up. Fins nipped off, heads banged up from living in concrete tanks, etc. And wild fish usually have richer colors. Like the bright buttery belly on this guy. 😁

    • @Jd-yc3gw
      @Jd-yc3gw 2 роки тому

      @@SavageFlies Makes sense. Up here most are stocked as fingerlings and since we don’t have any wild trout clipping fins isn’t required. If we did that process would be painstaking with fingerlings.

    Lovely sea trout fly Matt and a great video again, I know it's a tying channel but the fishing was pretty cool and I would like to see more. Using the fly you just tied was a great idea and would make a great addition to your tying vids, obviously it's way more work but it would definitely pay off. As for marabou I've swapped for arctic fox especially with black as black marabou is mostly awful and the decent stuff is getting very expensive, I tried craft fur and mohair but arctic fox is the best by a mile and a little goes a long way. And well done landing the fish, a lovely looking trout.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому +1

      This is an outstanding comment Graham! I had forgotten about Arctic fox fur but remember how much like marabou it is the last time I used it. I’m going to break it out again and play around with it more. As for more fishing clips, I’ll try to add them when I can. One problem is that I can pretty much tie every day but I only get to fish about twice a month. 😫

  • @FlyTyer1948

    Sweet! An elegant (in the engineering sense) fly, simple & effective design that’s attractive. Plus, some very nice water where you caught a beautiful fish. That sulphur stayed visible throughout the cast & drift right up to the take. Good job landing him.
    Besides fishing a brawling, biggish river with pockets & counter currents, your Savage River is exactly the type of river that is my favorite. If I could still fish, I would happily visit & offer a day of bush hogging for a day of fishing.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому

      Ha! Thanks Bob. It is a beautiful river. And one of the main reasons we looked for our retirement farm in the area. And the fish in the fly fish only section are surprisingly big for a fairly skinny tail water. And not just because they gorged on tons of cicadas last year!

    As always, I love that you leave the "boo-boos" in your videos! It shows that everyone has problems from time to time, and helps the new tyers, like me, to not get too frustrated. Love to see the flies in action! That was a NICE brown! Nothing feels like catching on a fly you tied yourself! I still remember my 1st time! (It was only last year...LoL) Unfortunately, all of my flyrod catches are panfish and little largemouth bass. Only trout I've caught are a couple of rainbows up in the Poconos, and pond stocked rainbows locally on corn or spinners.I wish I had trout streams in my area!

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому +1

      Great comment; thank you! It really is fun to catch fish on your own flies. But don’t discount the panfish and bass! They can be just as fun and I’ve yet to catch a big bass on a fly. 🤣

I wonder if the artist really whitessed that. I've shot some cool photos of snakes capturing toads, also a snake mating cluster in my yard. For me black in a streamer is very productive. I was able to catch one of those little fish I told you about on another video. They were roundtable chub. Native to AZ. Caught it on a home made fly I call the Little Red Devil.

    Another nice fly! I really like the addition of the jungle cock eyes. For looks, it reminds me of the Hohbo by Steve Probasco, though that's tied with rabbit fur. I imagine this would fish just as well out here, and it's a slightly simpler tie, I'll have to try it. Very nice!

      @@SavageFlies I have an echo lift 7'6" 3wt with a Piscifun reel and Rio creek line. I love it for the small Driftless creeks I fish. I would rather spend the big$ on travelling to that area than big $ rods/reels. Most creeks are maybe 20' wide at the most.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому

      @@chevyguy6510 I love those Piscifun reels! Unless I get into saltwater fly fishing someday and need a nice drag, I’m done buying expensive reels. We can buy 4-5 of these things for the price of one “nice” reel. And the thing is, they’re actually nice reels! I’ve had two nice Redington Rises go bad, but I’ve never broken a Piscifun and a couple of mine I’ve beat up pretty good. 😁

    Another great video Matt thank you for all of them. I do have a question for you. I have a 3 weight rod and have looked at many sites hoping to find someone that fishes them with no luck. I bought it because I thought it would be fun to catch blue gills and other sunfish on it. It's strange that you read about 4 weight and up rigs but not 2 or 3. Is it possible that people are afraid to admit that they have them or don't think that they're worth using. Just wondering about this.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому

      This is a very interesting question. I’ve never given it much thought but there could be something there. I’ll bet I fish a 3-wt 80% of the time. In fact, I spent eight hours on the water this past Saturday with a 2-wt. Of course most of the waters I fish are just like what you saw at the end of this video. A 5-wt is perfectly fine there but anything bigger is really unnecessary. And a 3-wt is easier and simply more fun. Unless… I’m planning on fishing streamers. Then I usually grab a 5. So I guess my short answer would be, I’ve never heard of anyone being ashamed of fishing light tackle. I’m certainly not! Now one other note- I am about to buy my first 8-wt to go after some snakeheads here in Maryland. I will really be stepping out of my comfort zone here. 😁

    • @SavageFlies

      If you’re familiar with the area, turn on to Savage River Rd in Bloomington, MD. The lumberyard is on the right, you just keep going to the first bridge. More a question on an older pattern. It's for a Brown Dun reverse bend. Internet wasn't much help. As far as I can tell,it requires the fly to be tied with the point of the hook on top, rather than below. Am I correct in this? Don't remember where I got the pattern.
