Dude - the lack of machines is like the most important part of the lore. Its why they need spice so badly for navigation. Your making it sound like the writers made this up? its like dune 101.
Whether you like this show or not, the fact that the Dune Universe is existing with our current entertainment options, is a win for both fans and casuals.
I enjoyed it. My biggest gripe is their casual introduction of The Voice. This is supposed to be a prominent example of humanity unlocking the mind's potential after being faced with near destruction for relying on machines to do much of their thinking for them. Voice may serve nefarious purposes in practice but it's mere existence is meant to serve as an affirmation of humanity's faith in its own inherent abilities. It would not have been out of place for something so significant to be the culminating achievement of an entire season. Instead, she apparently figured it out in her dorm room between classes or something.
Agreed. The transfer of memory from Sister to Sister was also casually introduced when the Head Mother was passing. I was like 'OK, I guess humans are doing that now, no biggie'. They did expand the 'truth detection' abilities a bit, but not much. Like you, I also hoped they would have given the development of these momentous powers more shine, but I guess the writers of the show felt otherwise.
They tried to re-capture the mood from the first film; and I think did a pretty good job. I'm such a Dune fan; ever since I've read the first book that I will watch the entire season with open mind :) I even recently created my first ever ASMR using relaxing CyberPunk / Nostalgic Space Journey music with footage from Dune and Blade Runner. Would really like love some feedback from the sci fi fans if I'm on the right track.
I thought it was amazing. Great acting, interesting characters, interesting storyline.. very intriguing. Haven’t been hooked like this by a tv show in years. HBO is on a streak!
0:46 wow I'm so glad you said this! I thought I was the only one who noticed. This was a total distraction it took me completely out of it. I mean 10,000 years come on. 10,000 years is a very long time. 10,000 years ago, Humanity was very different.
The actual quote about the Butlerian Jihad from Dune was, "Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them." It was always implied that it wasn't just the thinking machines themselves that people rebelled against. The main themes of the books are about the different ways people try to control each other, and breaking away from that control. The implication was that thinking machines were just one method of control but it was such a powerful tool of control that it had to be banned.
It's a great world-building vehicle for the Dune universe - both Denis Villeneuve's films and Frank Herbert's novels. That said, it's a very slow burn (no pun intended) and I worry that the pacing isn't going to get people invested enough in it.
It feels like House of the Dragon cloned into the Dune universe. Weak monarch in charge of a vast realm? check. Strong independent Daughter as heir? check. Marriage arrangements gone south? check. Affair with one of the court's military officers? check. I forgot the most obvious, and obnoxious, taking into account that we're 20,000 years into our future: British regional accents? check
I'm a big Dune fan and I was not thrilled with the first episode. I think that we could have done with out all of the sisterhood training montage-esk stuff, there is a better way to introduce the necessary characters to TBH a lot of the episode felt cheep like it was a SYFY network production. That being said the last 25minutes was solid political intrigue thriller which I hope is what the show is going to be about. I'll be watching but I would love it if this wasn't just a show for people who enjoy sifi or Dune.
I am a Big Big Dune person.....I understand what Dune is all about,. oppression, exploitation of people, stealing land and natural resources from people.... religious oppression..... When the books were written they were very much written in the style of basically comparing what was happening in Palestine and still is today..... I don't particularly care for the first episode of Dune prophecy
I think he's what he says he is but somehow overdosed on spice during the attack and it's unlocked something in him. He's a proto Paul, but accident. The sisters will eventually decide they want that but controllable.
I am a fan of Dune but this episode of Prophecy did not impress me. It is just a carbon copy in look of the Foundation series(which was also not impressive). The episode begins with a lot of exposition, what happened to show, not tell? Shame, I would have loved a good Dune series.
Only problem i have with this series is... well i have 2 problems with it. First one is that there's not more of it. Second is a personal reason. Ive been campaigning for them to make a series about the spacing guild , ideally following an aspiring navigator and all the crazy stuff they have to do to become a stage 3 navigator. The idea hasn't caught on yet, i only know dune through the films but im currently reading the book about the spacing guild didnt know there was one until recently... I'm listening to it. Never was a book guy only science books, and i read the dictionary a couple times.
Hey John and Crew, luv ur show I..luvd the first Dune but the sequel in the second half was too overstuffed for me and a little to chaotic and jumbled and i think the second movie split in two would of been better...I also hated the 70's version so with people saying u need to adore the world of Dune to really like this show i disagree with..I watched this not expecting too much after the divisive reviews but i really liked it, pleasantly surprised how good it was...Cant wait for the next episode, i am a big Sci-fi fan so maybe thats why i liked it so much..
I think this show could be used as a convenient way to introduce the Tleilaxu as a faction in the cinematic Dune universe with their strange experiments and proto-cyberpunk augmentations and prostheses. Also, a big aspect of Dune Messiah, Gholas, which I think Desmond Hart may be one, and he’s using Tleilaxu technology to complete his religious guest for his “gods” that he mentioned while talking to Emperor Corrino. All in all, a pretty solid first episode and I’m excited to see where it goes!
I was worried this show would be terrible, but I think this first episode was pretty good overall. Definitely going to hang around for the next episodes and i hope it stays strong throughout.
When I watched it, I basically thought ”wtf is this crap?” for the first 15-20 minutes. Several acting performances didn’t feel up to par and I overall didn’t like the cinematography, so I was skeptical to say the least. Then when she used the voice for the first time, I burst out laughing like WTF was that?😂. It sounded so flat and weak compared to the movies. Having said that, I got more interested as the episode progressed, and I will give the remaining episodes a chance. And I should mention that just before I watched it I saw two masterpieces - Dune movies and The penguin series, so the bar was set very high.
I thought Dune Prophecy was great too. It looked amazing, the design was on point, the schism between the two main Bene Gesserite sisters is interesting, and when Darrio Naharis shows up, he's got some crazy tricks up his sleeve that might be cool as the story develops. I do enjoy how all the pissy trolls are ready to call the whole thing shit after one single episode.
It was the only way that it made sense for a technological universe to have an antiquated style of government (Emperor, Great Houses etc). Also for why in a world with Atomics, people are running around with swords and knives. Herbert was smart enough to know he had to explain that away. So actually it wasn't just hinted at, Herbert made reference to it a BUNCH in the early books. The Butlerian Jihad also explained the mentats, and why our style of computers were not a factor. He wanted the cool factor of Feudalism. But he wanted it to make at least SOME logical sense. So this show is on firm ground from that source material.
I really love Dune so I was hooked after the first shot of the war against the thinking machines. I really wish Denis did his versions in two Hbo seasons instead of two pg-13 movies. Still love the movies though.
Preach. I would have LOVED if Dune had been adapted in a big budget series instead of movies. All the stuff the hardcore dune fans are crying about getting cut from the movies but what can you expect? Even at there current length its impossible to include it all. Like imagine it we could have spent a whole season on Arrakis before the betrayal with that serving as the season finale and Pual Joining the Fremen would have covered season 2. Season three could have finished out dune plus included Messiah with CoD being covered in season 4 etc etc.
Brian Herbert wrote a novel "The Butlerian Jihad" along side Sisterhood of Dune. It's not a very good book. But Frank Herbert established that instead of computers or any machine designed to replicate human thought is illegal (but people break laws all the time) and to replace "thinking machines" they have Mentats. I love Dune, and the pilot episode was fine. I wasn't crazy about it, but it's good. Well crafted and the production value is there, it's just based on some of the weakest books in the Dune series. So I hope they take as many liberties as possible because Brian Herbert's Houses series and prequels are pretty weak and retcon a lot of established aspects of Frank Herbert's 6 core novels.
Personally, I enjoyed the first episode. Looking forward to seeing more. Incidentally, Charlie from "Emergency Awesome" is watching this show, and breaking down the episodes. Again, as I have been mentioning... I recommend watching his videos. Another one that I recommend is Paul from "Heavy Spoilers". He is watching and breaking it down, as well.
My one big hope for this series is that it will give Emily Watson some long-needed exposure, but she hasn't been really mentioned in any of the discussion, which makes me sad.
I felt DUNE PROPHECY is a mix between The Dune films and the 80’s sitcom The Facts of Life. You take the good you take the bad and there you have Dune Prophecy. I felt the episode dragged until half way through then I was glued to the screen. Ready to see where the series goes
Went in with pretty much no expectations, was pleased with what I got. Looking forward to seeing where they take it. Will say that I would love to see a movie or limited series about the Butlerian Jihad itself, though.
Taking the GOT formula and adapting it to scifi show isnt the worst idea. GOT is after all one of the most successful shows ever made. If ur gonna copy someone copy from the best. Plus the GOT comparison is now lazy. All kinds of shows have been compared to it.
George RR Martin as well as George Lucas (Star Wars) have both said in interviews Dune & Frank Herbert was a huge influence on Martin’s GoT books and the Star Wars movies.
Enjoyed it, and it's just getting started. Reminded me of HBO's raised by wolves and Foundation in apple TV. I'm just glad I have a good Sci-Fi show to look forward to every week, with good visuals and a big budget...
wtf are you smoking, of course people will compare it to the movies - its the only other live action representation, and the show is CLEARLY reusing the visual elements established by the recent movies.
@@RebelInquiry for starters, Dune movies have one of the best film maker currently at the helm with such a high budget. Also, the movies are based far superior source material. Can't compare TV and movies, totally different form of storytelling
I give that first episode like a 7.3 .. But I actually think every episode could get better. I was a little confused on what the hell was going on half the episode though. Did Ragnar Lothbrok not get eaten by a Sandworm!? That confused me.
They could've shaved like 20 minutes of it. Coke induced party was irrelevant in my opinion. The intro and outro are what have me hooked. They tried to make cinematography look similar to the movies but it felt not as grand or well executed, kinda like a CW show with more budget. The direction I thought was great. I wish we saw more of young Valya, she killed it in that role
First half was pretty shaky, but it really picked up after that. And yeah, The Butlerian Jihad was always a war against thinking machines in the OG books bro
The development of this show was fraught to say the least. It's on showrunner #4 and it had major cast changes because of long it took to get to filming. If it does well, perhaps there will be more episodes for season 2.
As a reader, the world of Dune is my favorite. For some reason, after several attempts I cannot get into the movies. I don't think they are bad they just don't talk to me. As to the new HBO series, I found the first 15 or 20 minutes rather choppy but then settled into it. I think it's going to be good!
It wasn’t bad. But….ahhh and I hate being this person but there is so much rich mythology they aren’t touching. I’ll definitely give it a chance. I’d just hope they don’t rush things.
The only thing they rushed was their way out of the Brian Herbert novels which are mid, so they can tell their own story within the world and lore limitations set by Frank. Basically we got the hell away from Brian's shackles and into Frank's, which was absolutely the correct move.
I loved parts of it. The only thing I really hated about Prophecy was, the younger cast. I didn’t care for the Princess Ynez storyline. I really like Travis Fimmel but his character was pretty bland. Yes it was pretty surprising what he did at the end of the episode. His character almost reminds me of Euron Greyjoy 🤮 The only characters I LOVE are Valya and Tula Harkonnen !!! ❤
so i am into those things. and i LOOOOOVED the last 2 dune movies. my issue is wonderig if i need to have consumed any other dune media to enjoy this show
yeah ive said the same thing since i saw it and i still think that its for sure the best movie ive seen since interstellar.... which was 10 years ago lol
I liked it, but it seemed uneven. So far, it seems like its playing it safe and not really going genius-level bonkers, in the best possible way. Nothing in it really stood out, but nothing in it seemed bad, either, and I'm cautiously optimistic that this'll be one of those slow-burn shows that pulls you in after you've seen a bit more of it.
I want to steal this quote from an IMDB user : "My only criticism is that I think some of release Bene Gesserit should be hotter. If they're manipulating the universe, they should all be 10's. I know that sounds childish, but it's true."
its still early days of bene gesserit, they even not called bene gesserit yet. the only voice user maybe only one person, mother superior, soooo its not fully developed. they will only get better
😅 okay I was thinking this while watching but I wasn't sure if it's problematic. In the films most of the bene women looked like sexy model spies, besides the older ones. The series sisterhood.... looked like they couldn't manipulate any man of power 😅
I am deep into Dune but feel this is hit and miss. The writing goes from poor to good from scene to scene and there are early indications they are going closer to Brian's stereotypical lowbrow scifi than Frank's truly deep universe. The machine war take in the Butlerian Jihad suggests that. A few indications that they have a deeper grasp on things with the Arafel reference but lots of signs the writers are not skilled or smart enough to handle this. Also why does no one important have bodyguards?
Director of series: “I loved the acting in Twilight Saga. Let’s do that. Everybody stare, Action!” Emperor has no agency. Really? Rules the galaxy and is led around.
huh? Sometimes exposition is necessary especially when you are dealing a story that literally has tens of thousands of years of history. "show don't tell" doesn't mean never to show it just means knowing when to use it and when not to. Bad take.
@@rammiine Agree to disagree. We all have different opinions. That said, a lot of that exposition could’ve been easily written into scenes. As someone who writes and deals with writers (though very few screenwriters), I know. I am someone who loves to watch Sci-Fi, and I understand that some explosion is needed, but that much? It felt so cheesy. Right when I thought it stopped, It kept going. What I saw felt like lazy writing and I couldn’t continue. I kept wondering to myself if this is really an HBO show.
The show feels like a handmaids tale mix with Disney Starwars.. very basic bad writing. Very women oppressed but we will overcome aspect where almost every male character is almost and antagonist by default. There so much they could have done with it but instead dumbed it down so much. They even talk like medieval times like other than the backgrounds it dont feel like a epic scifi world saga. It doesnt feel like a large world builder.
How is every male character an antagonist and where are women oppressed?! WTF? Did you smoke something? Women are basically more powerful than men in this universe. But it’s not made in a feminist kind of way. There is a reason behind it. The worldbuilding is also pretty solid. The writing is also good. I dunno what kind of show you watched but it definitely wasn’t the first episode of Dune Prophecy
Dude - the lack of machines is like the most important part of the lore. Its why they need spice so badly for navigation.
Your making it sound like the writers made this up? its like dune 101.
The original book is very clear on the war against ancient machines, why AI is forbidden and how development went into a biological direction.
A LOT of important concrete lessons to be learned from that for us here in modern day civilization.

76 years old and into Dune from the original Frank Herbert novel. The first episode clicked with me as well.
One detail I keep giggling over is Travis Fimmel (who is Australian) re-using his Vikings Ragnar Lothbrok accent.

Pretty good, it makes you understand why Paul sees a great stagnation because for 10,000 years, no real development and all that.
Interesting how you just now realized the purposeful absence of technology in the Dune universe. It's a central theme.
GREAT first episode !!! Really

The only thing they rushed was their way out of the Brian Herbert novels which are mid, so they can tell their own story within the world and lore limitations set by Frank. Basically we got the hell away from Brian's shackles and into Frank's, which was absolutely the correct move.
I'm not into Dune at all, but I understood everything. Maybe im just a smart guy. 😂
Loved it. I was more interested in this episode than the first episode of thrones. And I became a HUGE thrones fan.
Please dune episode 1 sucks😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Where can we watch the show?
HBO production on Crave in Canada
It was just ok!
I loved parts of it.
The only thing I really hated about Prophecy was, the younger cast. I didn’t care for the Princess Ynez storyline. I really like Travis Fimmel but his character was pretty bland. Yes it was pretty surprising what he did at the end of the episode. His character almost reminds me of Euron Greyjoy 🤮
The only characters I LOVE are Valya and Tula Harkonnen !!! ❤
What also hurts Dune’s rating is that it’s on Sunday during the NFL season
reaaaalllly dont think these 2 demographics are the same
Man that episode was boring af.
Checked out at the girls martial arts scene. Nothing in it pulled me in.
First episode, average at best. Maybe deserves an episode two watch.
I love my ragnar mqn sickest character and his power looks mad
If your into magic/mystery or assignation and political cunning. U can get down with the series
so i am into those things. and i LOOOOOVED the last 2 dune movies. my issue is wonderig if i need to have consumed any other dune media to enjoy this show
@ nope
yeah ive said the same thing since i saw it and i still think that its for sure the best movie ive seen since interstellar.... which was 10 years ago lol
Shame RBW was canceled.
He said the J-word.
jorts
i never heard anyone pronounce jihad they way john did. must be a Canadian language barrier eh
The first episode was super cheesy to me, no nuance in the dialogue or performances.
I want to steal this quote from an IMDB user :
"My only criticism is that I think some of release Bene Gesserit should be hotter. If they're manipulating the universe, they should all be 10's. I know that sounds childish, but it's true."
7's or 8's. 10's are unattainable and no-one will talk to them.
its still early days of bene gesserit, they even not called bene gesserit yet. the only voice user maybe only one person, mother superior, soooo its not fully developed. they will only get better
😅 okay I was thinking this while watching but I wasn't sure if it's problematic. In the films most of the bene women looked like sexy model spies, besides the older ones. The series sisterhood.... looked like they couldn't manipulate any man of power 😅
😂😂
I love this show it's visual effects was amazing
I loved it
It was fire !
Oh brother 🤦♂️
Excellent, I love Dune!
Thought it was good.
Same and it's just getting it's footing. Travis Fimmel is fantastic and Raised by wolves was epic. Sad it got cancelled....
I'm really enjoying the show so far:)
Director of series: “I loved the acting in Twilight Saga. Let’s do that. Everybody stare, Action!”
Emperor has no agency. Really? Rules the galaxy and is led around.
More like lame of Thrones 8:30
Disappointed
10000% Yes im in
I don’t think I could get past the intro. Show don’t tell. It was so bad… so much exposition.
Ok
Perfect description Handmaids tale x Disney Star Wars
Awful take
Loved! Loved! Loved it!
