@ it was a joke I’m not delusional enough to think he would be watching a Nickelodeon show, like all jokes there’s a bit a truth because I think the younger people knew she had some comedic timing(even if it wasn’t film caliber acting) but like this wasn’t a serious comment at all dude
12:07 I believe the reason Ariana Grande will be nominated for Supporting Actress instead of Lead Actress along with Cynthia Erivo is because when the musical came out in 2003, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were both nominated for Best Actress at the Tony awards which meant only one of them could win. Idina Menzel won, which then lead people to feel like Kristin Chenoweth was snuffed for a Tony since she was equally as deserving. Nominating Cynthia and Ariana in different categories assures they can both deservedly win their awards rather than repeating history. People still have mixed feelings about this, but I believe that is the reason for this decision.
I just saw this movie last night with my friends, and all I can say is that it was Epic, a masterpiece, and way better than I was expecting. Bravo to both actresses and the director. This is Oscar caliber🎉🎉🎉
I’m a Wicked fan, so I knew I would like it, but I haven’t felt this way about a movie in years - it blew my mind. I was also put off by Cynthia freaking out over the fan art, but I forgot about all that within the first few minutes because I was instantly captivated! And the animal subplot makes a lot more sense in act 2 and how it all ties into the Wizard of Oz 👍🏻
I saw both this and gladiator 2 with my girlfriend and I didn't expect to enjoy this film more but I did. She was crying by the end of the movie as well. It really was a great movie going experience.
Had zero interest in this movie, but I respect John for praising it when it would be easy to bash it, and I'm now mildy curious to watch it at some point, if only to see some old-school, grand-scale Hollywood filmmaking.
As a former theatre kid who mostly interacts with other current and former theatre kids, all of whom have been waiting for this movie for a decade, I sometimes forget not everyone is intimately familiar with the entire plot and music of Wicked 😂
I can tell you that Ariana Grande is very likely playing Megara in the upcoming Hercules/Hades Disney live action. Also seems like she is campaigning to play Audrey Hepburn in a biopic.
Yay, John! I'm glad you liked it. I really haven't liked the trailers but you are one of the fairest and most thoughtful reviewers around and I always appreciate your thoughts.
Loved your review John ... was almost as enjoyable as watching the movie. Nothing better than hearing someone's reactions when their expectations for something are far exceeded beyond their wildest imaginations. As far as the subplot of the animals in the film ... that will come more into play in the 2nd part ... you got a hint of what's ahead at the end of this film as it starts to become clear what the Wizard and Madame Morrible are planning in regards to having total control over everything in OZ. Now my question is ... has the film sparked your interest enough to want to try and see the stage version when you get the chance?
the animal subplot is really important to elphaba’s character arc though. that’s the driving force behind her decision to turn against the wizard at the end of the movie.
Just out of the theater. My 60th birthday is tomorrow. What a gift. I found myself weeping several times throughout the movie. Good God. What production value the two leads could sing. The weakness were the other supporting cast didn't have as strong of voices but look what they had to compare to. And I've read all the Dune books. Wicked mops up over dune 1 and 2.
It’s more in my age range. Ariana Grande was a standout in her Nickelodeon days. She played the comedic relief so well even back then, it was wild how much better she’s gotten
Seeing the movie tonight but in the source material (both stage and more so the book) the subplot related to the wizards policies around animals (in the view of demonising them to draw attention away from his lack of ability to govern) has a massive impact on the decisions Elphaba makes. You also understand why she’s so passionate about standing up for them- she too has always been treated differently because she’s different.
They actually made a movie for its target audience? Wow thats unheard of. It'll probably make a ton of money too. Who would have known thats what it takes to make a successful film 😮
I have very little interest in this film. However I’m a music teacher and defying gravity is a study piece on one of the exam boards so I am aware of the significance of the musical. I teach a student who adores musical theatre and I asked her when the trailer came out “does this look good from the perspective of a fan of the musical?” And she said “oh yeah it looks super faithful” because I thought it looked good from a filmmaking standpoint but I really don’t have a lot to go on musical wise. I was going to wait to check it out but man the reviews have sold me I’m seeing it tonight, I’ve always known Ariana Grande can act she used to act on Nickelodeon but I am someone who adores good cinematography even in a bad film if the cinematography is good I’ll sing the praises of the cinematographer and the fact this was done by the cinematographer who did In The Heights and Tick Tick Boom has me excited those films are gorgeous
@@jer9grant Page 6. It was confirmed after they got a false quotes alleged to be from the ex-wife of Ethan Slater that both couples were already in a separation stage before they started dating.
I feel bad for Gladiator 2... my theater is sold out full weekend for wicked... I saw gladiator today, opening night in the biggest theater they had (theater 1) with 4 other people.
I am glad to see that it was great. I have read some brutal reviews from some reputable outlets, mainly upset over the length of the film (and that it will be a 2nd part). Some even claimed they didn't care for the acting. Because you go deep into acting, direction, cinematography, you truly review film. I really hope many of the viewers feel the same way as you. Honestly the critics surprised me as they really acted as though they did not know it had a 2nd part and eviscerated it with their reviews.
Loved it, Ari is for sure the MVP. Cynthia was good, there were some moments in which I didn't love some of the choices they made but overall it was good.
John - I completely agree with your review. Of course, I am probably a bit biased because I have seen the musical 58 times (yes, 58 times). To be fair, I was initially skeptical about some of the casting at first, but in the end it worked. Cynthia and Ariana not only nailed it but to quote a song that we will see in Wicked Part 2, they've left a "handprint on my heart". I also agree with you about the lead actress award BS. My predictions: Cynthia will be nominated for Golden Globe (potential win) and probably an Oscar. Ariana will WIN a Golden Globe and be nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (deserves to win both) Chu should be nominated for both and deserves both. I think it will WIN for Costume Design and be nominated for Hair/Makeup. Probable win for Cinematography. Adapted Screenplay, maybe? Controversially, the music related awards could be interesting. Technically, I don't believe that any of the individual songs can be nominated for Best Original Song (since none of the songs were written specifically for the movie). I think that the same rules apply to Best Original Score, but some media outlets are still predicting that Wicked could still somehow be nominated because the score is much more wide ranging compared to the stage show. Chicago (2002) for example, was nominated for Best Original Song because it added a song into the end credits ("I Move On", performed by Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellweger). The song was written by the same writers as the rest of the numbers in the musical, but the song was cut before the stage version of Chicago officially opened on Broadway in 1975 which meant that since the song was publicly released for the first time on the film soundtrack it was eligible for a nomination. Unfortunately, it didn't take home the Oscar and I suspect this is because the song wasn't performed during any pivotal point of the story and one could argue it was "snuck in" for purposes of getting attention at Oscars (which that it did). There is rumor and speculation that Wicked Part 2 will actually have two original songs in it (potentially numbers that were initially meant for the stage musical and cut during development). Act Two of the stage show is only about 50 minutes long which is not enough time for a full length motion picture of course, so I feel this is more reason why we can expect Wicked Part 2 to have original songs in it to be submitted for Oscar contention in 2026. The mastermind behind the music of Wicked is Stephen Schwartz, who has previously won three Oscars out of eight nominations plus a Golden Globe and three Grammys. In short, I think we know how this could musically end up during awards season in 2026.
@ it actually takes more work towards the craft to act exaggerated like they do in sitcoms without it seeming unauthentic which kinda proves my point a little more
I have my ticket to go see Wicked tomorrow at 8pm but I’m thinking about changing my time. I don’t want to deal with people singing along to the songs. It’s extremely annoying and disrespectful to people who just want to watch the movie in peace and quiet. Does anyone have any good suggestions as to what I should do? I was thinking about going really late, but even those times are still kinda filled up.
this kind of movie shud be my cup of tea as a musical fan, idk if i'm the right demo or not but I'm a little of two minds about it. There were those scenes that looked like classic filmmaking that looked epic and grand but then there ere other scenes that felt like a straight to streaming film, reminded me a lot of the Netflix movie the school for good and evil actually. I had a good time but not as over the moon as i'd hoped. Ariana was fun tho. Also I don't really get the no singing thing, I think that would enhance the experience, I've never seen them enforce this rule at other musicals, what theater had such bad singers that they had to enforce this rule lol, i guess I could see it being annoying if maybe the entire theater sang very loudly every single song, but Ive never seen that happen other than maybe the taylor swift concert movie last year, but for the most part it enhanced the experience but if course theres no story to follow there either so ya its a lil different.
Will be seeing this movie, just not opening week. Wicked the musical has always had political themes. It hits differently now. And to answer the question, yes, Tick, tick… Boom! is a musical.
Broadway musical Wicked has better singers. This movie is not based on Wizard of OZ books or movies. The witches are sisters in the book. It's a gay musical with gay actors.
I want to see it so bad. I've been following those online Oscar predictions contents and Ariana Grande is really starting to be considered for the Best Supporting Actress category.
u really need to check ur facts, ethan didnt leave his wife for ariana and ariana was the one who was cheated on lmao. and with cynthia, yes she did overreact but then you all proved her point. shes just not chronically online
Did people forget Ariana was an actor first before starting her music career?
Lot of ppl don’t know that.
Yeah I first knew her from Victorious and Sam and Cat years before she launched her music career
Very true. People forgot she can act
Victorious wasn't John's era. He obviously isn't aware of that show.
A lot of people here aren't Victorious or Sam & Cat watchers.
Not surprised about Ariana. She was on Broadway when she was 12. She gets it.
Well Ariana was an actress first.
I don't think he ever seen Sam & Cat.
The little subplot about the animals IS THE WHOLE POINT JOHN.
The entire thing you could say
And the fact that the wizard is behind it all
Grande's Cat Valentine carried Nickelodeon for like 5 years

So does the girl in the wheelchair become the Wicked Witch of the East? 🤔
I've been wondering the same thing. She's her sister, after all. I've never seen the broadway show.
It’s a tragedy John’s never seen Victorious. Ariana was an actress first
I mean sure but it’s not like she got to show off her acting shops in that
He was in his late 30s/early 40s when that aired. He wouldn’t be watching some Nickelodeon show about teen girls unless he’s on a list.
Hes like 40 why would he watch victorious lmao

The subplot of the Animals is from the book. It's important to how she acts later on. That lion cub.... think about that.
I wasnt gonna see it but i saw a great review the other day talking about the practical sets, not all cgi, which impressed me.

The subplot with the animals ends up being a huge part in the second act so all of that was a set up for later.
Yay, John! I'm glad you liked it. I really haven't liked the trailers but you are one of the fairest and most thoughtful reviewers around and I always appreciate your thoughts.
With all the crying from Cynthia and Ariana in interviews, this movie better change my life lmao 🤣
That Ariana hook up situation if its true makes me want to support the movie.

Going to see this Saturday morning. I saw the musical twice and loved it.
This was the same guy that directed Jem and the Holograms. What a bounce back.
The Animals plot is a big deal in the book. I've seen the musical a few times and don't recall it being a major deal in that. But might be forgetting.
It was an element in the musical for sure. I think the movie just had more time to focus on it.
