Funny thing about the Olive Garden ad is that it was in the uk cinema screening of the film.....even though there are NONE in the uk Then it was cut almost entirely from the digital release ( besides the ending of course) BUT IT IS in the blue ray release Weird
That's why I'm disappointed that they didn't change those scenes to feature a more internationally known brand like McDonald's or Starbucks here in Europe. Seems like Sega just ignorantly partnered with Olive garden without looking into whether it actually makes sense to partner with them to begin with.
The Olive Garden thing wasn’t actually an ad. They weren’t payed to say that. The writers thought it was funny and paid Olive Garden to use their name in the joke.
@@calistusjay60 Wow so funny to joke about a company that nobody outside the US has ever heard about. Yeah that joke will definitely land with international audiences 🙄
@@calistusjay60 I don't have any idea what an Olive Garden is but the joke was kinda... not bad I would say, I understood that it was a restaurant and that's what matters
Fun fact about this movie: apparently the Dutch dub of it was so bad that Sega didn't even bother adding it to the DVD and Blu ray releases. It's only available in the digital version apparently.
The brazilian one had the original Sonic VA since the 2000's so for me it's great. It was kind of strange that Robotnik VA wasn't Jim Carey's VA but OK for me.
Talking about unleashed real quick, I wouldn't have minded if they adapted Unleashed's story and since Sonic on a globetrotting adventure around the world, I feel like that would have been pretty cool.
@@dragonick2947 me too. But I see why they wouldn't do it, since the general public would just be confused as to why sonic becomes a werewolf and it would just become the same as Sonic Unleashed's original critical reception. 99% of viewers probably haven't played a single game past Sonic 1 or 2
Yeah. I do think they probably incorporated the rings the best they could though. I mean they essentially work the exact same as like the entrance ways into Special zones in like Sonic 1. And I mean those are big old golden rings.
I could totally see why you aren't too big on this film, since it wanted to start things simple for a sonic movie rather than doing something more similar to the games , and from the looks of it seems like the sequel is attempting to be more like the ladder , so I think you'll enjoy that .
@@clarafindley6689Spoiler ALERT : ....................................................................................................................................................................The synopsis says that knuckles gets tricked by Eggman and they team up against sonic and tails.

Same here with thinking the movie was fine but when I first heard it was gonna be a road trip like movie I thought of HOP which basically does the same thing, but that's the only bad thing I can say about it.
Gotta agree with you, it didn't need to be a road trip movie. That really made the movie drag a lot. HOWEVER, I really love Dr. Robotnik and Sonic in the movie.
Something I don't like with the sonic movie is that it feels like the studio just kinda, "knew what sonic was" And never really played any of the games. You can Literally replace sonic with like, The flash or an original speedy character, Change the intro, Make a few tweaks and its no longer even close to a sonic movie anymore.
Judging by the subtle Easter eggs and what was shown in shooting for Sonic 2. I say the people behind the movie knows a fair amount and respects the brand, especially with the the delay to properly redesign Sonic. It's clear that it was mainly the fault of Paramount and limiting the movie budget.
I'll admit this. Even after Sonic got redesigned, I thought the film was still gonna be (as Schaffrillas Productions would say) a cinematic disaster. Mainly because it was just looking to be literally EVERY other live action depiction of a beloved property. Being shoved into modern times, pandering to lliteral babies by shoving in modern trends, and the title character NOT being the focus and instead focusing on the stupid boring humans. Thankfully this movie (while certainly no masterpiece) managed to surprise me. 1. If there is one thing I'm sick to death of, its when these live action adaptations, despite having a fully established universe to work with, decide to instead take the characters of that universe and dump them into our world. Nowhere was that more obvious then the "Smurfs" movies. Despite having a midevil mushroom village full of magic and mystery to work with, lets just dump these iconic Hannah Barbara characters into our world! Or with "Fat Albert", despite being a 70's cartoon that was fairly grounded in reality, nah lets just make it where "Fat Albert" literally comes outta the TV and transport from 1974 to 2004!! Or "Thomas and the Magic Railroad", which they take the Island of Sodor, a fictional railway based heavily on real life British railways, and re-established it as another dimension, while 90% of that movie is focused on "Shining Time Station". A show that was meant to introduce Thomas to US audiences who at the time weren't as fmiliar with Thomas as the British was, but to make a movie based on a beloved Britiish property with international recognition, and base it off a US only spinoff series, yeah why wouldn't that movie bomb? "Sonic The Hedgehog" meanwhile manages to give a decent reason why Sonic is in our world. Because he had been forced to live there at an early age for his own safety. Now I just hope that "Sonic The Hedgehog 2" will actually be set in Sonic's world. 2. For a film targeted at kids, only having ONE fart joke is surprisingly Anti-Hollywood of you Hollywood, and I love it. While the humor doesn't always stick the landing, but it feels like the attempts at humor feel more genuine, like the writers were at least trying. Not to mention while the "Olive Garden" promotion is dumb, its at least quick and painless. It could've been like "Garfield The Movie" where the product placement is like half of the film, and super in your face about it. 3. Its a live action film adaptation of a beloved property, that actually focuses on the title character!! Not to mention the way Sonic is portrayed is how I personally feel he should be portrayed. Cocky, immature, not relying too heavily on 2000's edge, while still given a decent selection of emotions, to help him feel more believable. When I read the premise for the film and saw the first trailer, I thought Tom was literally just gonna be Chris Throndike all over again, in that HE was gonna be the action focus instead of Sonic. Again, think back to "The Smurfs". You again make a movie based on very well known cartoon characters, but instead you focus on Neil Patrick Harris's martial problems and fears of becoming a father.....oh and the Smurfs are there somewhere. "Sonic The Hedgehog" meanwhile puts Sonic as the primary focus, the way he's portrayed is (for the most part) in line with his game personality, and the humans he interacts with for a majority of the film are fairly likable. Basically this movie takes every trope of every other live action depiction of a beloved property, and makes them tolorable at the very least.
Compared to Detective Pikachu it feels like just a generic movie with Sonic in it. Detective Pikachu feels like it was written by someone who played the games and had a genuine interest in the series. However this makes Detective Pikachu hard to enjoy unless your a big Pokémon fan.
I disagree, i feel like this movie was written by people who actually understood the franchise and others who tried. The amount of references and character put into it its hard to miss. The fact that they even put the movie on hold to change sonics design speaks alot. To even have character development were we see sonic becoming what we know him as is pretty great, as this is an origins story Where this differs to detective pikachu imo is they didn't just want to gather the sonic fandom but a movie *everyone* can enjoy, even ones who dont know sonic very well. Detective pikachu felt like a movie *only* pokemon fans can enjoy.
I wouldn't say that, my dad ain't never played Pokemon and absolutely hates anime (not that Detective Pikachu was anime, but Pokemon as a whole certainly is) and he was fine with it.
@@Peasham well thats great for him but others who i had watch the movie with me including my parents who didn't know about Pokemon were lost on alot of the jokes and references the movie made. Leaving them with this typical detective movie that explained nothing about the lore or world of pokemon. Thats their criticism
Despite my profile pic, I would consider myself more of a Pokemon fan than a Sonic fan, but I still prefer the Sonic movie. I mean, I enjoyed both, but the Sonic movie was just easier to get into.
Personally I felt really excited after watching it but after more than a year... Yeah it's fun, but that's it. It's good but not amazing. I hope that with the sequel they're willing to do something more ambitious with the IP Edit: I also hope they manage the demografic more like Pixar or "Dreamworks when it decides to make a movie that's actually good"
This really seemed like a movie I think everyone would enjoy, but I get that there are elements that a big sonic fan would criticize. We can all agree that Jim Carrey...well carried
Exactly, like the movie itself is *fine*, not bad but nothing crazy either, it plays safe from most of it. I totally don't mind all of that being this the first movie, but I hope the second film have a more interesting plot and introducing more elements from the games. At least this movie is better than 95% other videogames movies lol
@@coolbeans7z539 there were sonic levels like that, and it seems weird to think the writers would throw a jab when for a long time sonic and mario havent really been rivals... but maybe
Apparently the Olive Garden stuff wasn't even sponsored. IIRC from an interview with like a scriptwriter or something )can't remember exactly) they mentioned how they just thought of the Olive Garden thing as a joke and included it in the script. They never actually received any money for that.
Sounds like you went to one of those daytime parent and child screenings where the lights don't dim and the sound isn't as loud so mothers can bring babies.
I definitely think that the movie sequel is going to go over similarly to how Sonic 2 for the Genesis went. People really enjoyed the original, and then the Sequel comes out with it's revisions and is considered a masterpiece. It will probably be a bit divisive, with fans putting much higher standards on both at release, but I think this will turn out for the best
Ayyy, more Film Tripp. I understand your viewpoint on this movie and I wish they did emphasize more of the action stuff because they’re the best parts. Maybe the sequel does just that, but who knows.
Tbh even though the movie had some bad jokes and catered forwards kids, a decent road trip story plus a bunch of sonic references make it worth adults to see. Not to mention it’s a good video game movie, so there’s that. Hopefully for Sonic movie two they do what sonic two did to the original: add tails and make it better
5:43 this goes both ways. A show shouldnt have to dumb itself down to keep kids entertained, and an adult show shouldnt have to constantly use vulgar language and socking imagery to keep adults intertained. Just be a show.
While it was kind of a schlocky "Alvin and the Chipmunks" type kids movie...it also did some genuinely good things and was frankly just kinda fun. It wasn't amazing but definitely better than I expected. Sonic pretending to be his own friend with his speed powers in particular was rather genius. They did him and his personality very well overall. Oh, and they included the Sanic meme in there. Hilarious.
Holy moly you had a bad cinema experience! Holy guacamole! I went on like one of the first days it was in the theatre and it was dead! I was like one of the only people in the theatre! Then again it was in the middle of the winter holidays so most families were out of the country on ski trips.
I’ve been a lifelong Sonic fan and I’ll be totally honest with you in saying that I thought the film was pretty solid. The Sonic series as well as Sonic lore is very weird and hard to get across to a general audience. I completely understand why Paramount felt it was necessary to change it into the story it became. That being said, this is not the premise or movie I wanted for Sonic. I understand the changes, but I don’t think we needed Sonic in the real world. I feel many of your criticisms seem overly critical though. Considering how you complained about Tom’s decision to leave Green Hills or the fact that Sonic made kids-targeted jokes, (a criticism that I really didn’t understand), I’m shocked you didn’t even mention how Sonic’s speed is OP yet he can’t use it to just go to San Francisco or just run up the side of the skyscraper. Either way, fixing Sonic’s awful design was obviously a huge benefit to the film and yes it did save it. But acting like many people won’t criticize the film because of that fact is unfair. It saved the movie, but that doesn’t mean the rest was so awful. It’s a solid film all around.
I agree with most of your criticisms; notably the seen with Sonic and Marsden in the car and Sonic chewing him out (I never actually thought about how kinda rude it was) but I do take issue with one thing: That this film should've matched the energy of the games. Obviously the games are extremely stylized and action packed, but Sonic's character is kinda ubiquitous no matter the content he's put in. Sure an accurate retelling of Unleashed or the Adventure games leaves tons of room for nonstop action, but Sonic's non-gaming media has varied a lot in scope. I found that the movie hit the same tone as the Sonic cartoons. Consider the baseball scene, Sonic did the exact same thing playing Tennis with himself in sonic underground. How about the scene in Adventure 2 when sonic catches up with the President's limo? I dunno, that is primo Sonic interacting with humans imo. Sonic's character and snarky attitude can be adapted to anything, even a buddy cop roadtrip. The film isn't a 93% but it's a good portrayal of Sonic. As a sonic fan, it captured his likeness nearly perfectly. Now the sequel should dig deeper into the Sonic lore for sure though! Great video Silok!
I think a lot of the jokes are pretty funny and the story is... ok. However, I can understand why sonic fans would not like it, and a 93% is way too high. like a 7/10
I like how you talk about "kid humor". I wish people would stop excusing crappy jokes or stupid pandering for kids. Kids like anything and can get attached to a good family movie without dumbing it down. Look at the original star wars trilogy, or something like Avatar the last airbender.
Hard to say that since the movie wasn’t really all too “wow look at this fictional character interact with our real world,” if anything that’s the first thing they established in the movie. Which is he was on Earth for a long while and knows a lot about the place he’s living in already
I agree with what you say. I would say I enjoyed the movie a lot more than you seemed to, sorry if I am worng, but I also think some of your issues were becuase this first movie was becuase they had to appeal too general audiences to get them hooked on the concept of Sonic. That's why I am hopeing Sonic 2 will be a lot better personally.
I have my own canon for what a live action movie would be of. First, some ground rules. Rings appear first as energy, dust orbiting around a center (like electrons orbiting around an atom), that creatures created from chaos can see ("chaos" being sorta like a radioactive mutation, but rather than uranium, it's the chaos emeralds. A rock or rock fragments from space that came from an alien species, the "black aliens" where black doom is from.) I never liked the idea of "they are earth animals, but anthropomorphic, so they are alien" approach. Sonic universe already has aliens, and they aren't similar to earth based creatures, so the rule is they all have to come from earth. Rings are just a form of "chaos energy" as a bi-product of the chaos emeralds. Sonic lore never identifies what rings are, what they are for, nor how they work so I find this ties it up nicely. They can be solidified into actual rings through technology. Capsules can pull in the energy to convert them into solid rings (which can be used like batteries), or the gloves all the characters wear can convert them as well, using them as a power source to form a kinetic barrier around the characters. (That's how super sonic works with consuming ring energy at an alarming rate. So just imagine it's overcharging their normal ability). That kinetic barrier is why rings=health and why getting hit makes you drop rings. They get knocked out of you as if stomping a ground full of dust. So it's essentially just invisible energy armor that can be knocked off you. Chaos energy can be used to teleport as shown by shadow's use of chaos control. So with enough chaos energy or "ring energy" you _(quote)_ "could" use them to teleport, which is what the rings are at the end of a 3D sonic level, but those areas would be few and far between, not something you can just carry with you (exception being chaos emeralds). Now with the ground rules out of the way. The plot would be pretty simple. It would start out in a jungle as a newly growing Julian Kintobor stumbles his way through in order to finish his grandfathers research. There he finds the first emerald. As well as a young sonic and tails. This was before they were able to develop memories (early stages of chaotic mutation). Miles Prowers, (not yet named "tails") would be Dr Kintobor's assistant. Where as Olgilvie Mauric (not yet known as sonic) was the guinea pig for their tests and experiments, like for instance, the shoes that made him run fast. Over time, DR Kintobor learned to terraforge the land, which later became "green hill testing zone" or to them, their "green hill zone", where the checker pattern and the "loops" are a result from precise cuts and molding of the land. This "look into the past" is only shown as quick glimpses which ends with a secret government known as G.U.N. (yes it's a stupid name but it's from the games so we'll roll with it) hear of his illegal animal experimentation and raiding their jungle lab. Julian as Olgilvie and Miles hid in terror under the furnishing and watches Julian flee from armed G.U.N. soldiers. (Yes, Julian Kintobor changes his name, gains some weight, and shaves his head and sports a dumb looking mustash all to hide who he is since he is now wanted. Now he goes by the name of Ivo Robotnik, the previous name was something that came from the Archie comics. As were sonic and tales name.) This "secret father-like" type role that only he remembers is to explain why eggman is ALWAYS teaming up with team sonic at the end of literally every 3D sonic game. It's because that even though they are his enemy, he actually cares about them due to a time he shared in a life he no longer lives. His original goals were just to understand his fathers work and the mystery surrounding his death. Which later translates to getting revenge against G.U.N. for killing him as well as raiding his lab. By the end, it turns into just wanting to take from the world what it took from him and conquer it as his own empire. One timejump later and we meet our "human counterparts". . . because every live action movie needs one. We meet a 20 something Christ Thorndyke (name stolen from the human counterpart from the tv series Sonic X) who lives in on a country side barn with his father and daughter and GF. The father scolds him for doing nothing with his life and that this journalist career is going no where and he needs to find a way to support his family. He tells him there's a big event tomorrow with robotic security expert Ivo Robotnik revealing his latest creation at the museum tomorrow. The thing he shows off are essentially E-1000 units (much like you see from team dark's robot in the game). However, this was all a ploy to attempt to steal an emerald that the museum was holding and then replace it with a fake. It was then that the blue blur busts onto the scene and destroys the robot. This is the first time Ivo seen him since he ran all those years ago. However, all anyone saw was the blur as all the robots were destroyed. Part of the debris from the robots hits Christ and knocks him out. Feeling responsible, sonic (who is now sonic) picks himup while still in a blur and takes him to the allie where tales (who is now tales) is watching from afar. Both are leaning over making she he is ok. He wakes up to see's them and freaks out, which causes them to freak out (much like the scene we saw in the live action movie that we got with the tranque gun). He then faints again and wakes only for the 2 to be gone and finding himself under a blanked of newspapers on the side. We get a joke by a patrol officer saying that the homless shelter is that way, this ally way is private property, you need to leave. Notices his phone is missing, he asks the officer if he seen it. Officer shrugs it off and he follows the tracker on his phone. This takes him to sonics secret base. He sneaks in to see sonic laying back eating a chilly dog seemingly talking to himself. He panics in hiding saying "that's the thing, that terrorist, creatures that attack the museum today" and then turns to see tails hovering over him with tails giving him a welcoming "Hi!", which causes him to freak out again. Sonic walks over stating "you gotta stop doing that." "Yo-you. You guys attacked--what are you exactly." Which we get the classic lines "Me? I'm sonic the hedgehog, and this guy over here is tails" tosses him the phone "sorry for taking your phone from ya, we just needed the footage from it". Tales brings up the footage on his make-shift computer of sonic destroying the robots from earlier. He freezes the image and enhances. "Right. . . there." The frame shows birds flying out of the robots. Julian was a genetics expert who only became a robotics expert as part of his cover. He was using the animals as a power source. "That should be all the proof we need." Smelling a scoop. Chris offers to aid them and takes them back to the barn seeing as the place they are using now is kinda a dump. They then explain the emeralds and how that eggman guy (first time the name is coined in the movie) was staging a theft and probably already stole it in the museum in the confusion. They have a general idea of where all the other emeralds are but have no way to get to them. That then leads to the grandparents crop duster. Tails tinkers with it to make it the x-tornado powered by the emerald that was back at "Green Hill Zone" that eggman never found (there were 2, he only ever found the one). The rest of the movie plays out as a classic "hunt for the dragonballs" tale, getting to all of them b4 eggman. Egg has 2, 1 from the museum and one from GHZ and team sonic has 1 that was also from GHZ. The remainders are at: • Shrine Isle where we meet Knuckles and the master emerald (the main chunk of the commit) where we get a battle between knuckels and sonic. • Chao Garden where we meet Amy and the choas. (Amy looks like a mess, which is why sonic doesn't like her. Later, it's thanks to chris's 5 year old daughter giving her a make-over that gives her her iconic look, including her red hairband since her quills would never stay in place). • A certain unnamed chemical plant (wink). • The final one being Space Colony Ark. Where the secret last minute villain is introduced: Shadow (don't worry, he gets redeemed by the end). The post credit scene teases Rogue the Batt recruiting a confused Shadow saying "the people I work for could use someone like you." She is accompanied by a repurposed Eggbot (E-1000 unit) which is suggested to potentially be E-123, codename Omega. There is a bunch more moments I have written out but this comment is long enough so as it is. The focus is on team sonic, not the uniconic humans. They are only there to ground the characters to our universe, not to take, hog, or even share the spotlight with them. Minor supporting cast only.
I saw this movie as a very simplistic start that sets up enough things to make a good sequel. Jokes were kinda lame, but the friendship was genuine enough to save the movie (7/10)+(1 point for Knuckles and Tails cameo)=8/10
I'm actually not that big of a fan of action movies considering I'm not exactly sure how to tell whether an action scene is good or not considering that an action scene is just a whole bunch of flashy lights that an animation corporation shows you to connect two points of the plot however I do appreciate the fact that Sonic was characterized by the fact that he's just a really lonely person because I believe that fits his character. In the game he's a person who values friendship immensely so imagining someone like that being alone; this is probably a good representation of that.
I think saying an action scene "is just a whole bunch of flashy lights that an animation corporation shows you to connect two points of the plot" is a bit of a _massive_ sweeping over-generalization, especially when a lot of the time (especially in the action genre) it's actually the other way around, where the action is the main point and the plot is just there to connect action scenes. Still, I can see how you prioritize plot and characters in your movies, and that's great. You keep enjoying what you enjoy.
@@syweb2 yeah, let me rephrase that. I do find that animated action scenes require time, effort and tons of skill, I'm absolutely not undermining the passion on display.
@@syweb2 also, yeah I'm more of a narrative person. Not that I can't appreciate a good fight scene, it's just that fight scenes are purposely design to look amazing, and if all of them look amazing, I can't really tell the good from the bad, but I see your point. Sometimes spectacle is good entertainment.
@@NO.10162 When something is designed to look amazing, it is very possible to fail at that. I've seen a few action scenes that utterly failed at providing spectacle or getting the viewer interested. On the other hand, sometimes there's too much going on and you can't tell what's happening, which is a criticism people often level at the live-action Transformers movies (and some superhero movies). Either of these can be considered less than great action scenes.
Y'know thats fair criticism and stuff. I personally still thought of the movie as a good time. Not the most in depth or anything but still good and better than I expected honestly. And honestly I still think this movie could've turned out much worse. I learned about a deleted scene (or somewhat deleted) that I guess was supposed to be the opening scene on earth where that crazy carl dude was apparently luring Sonic in with batteries, which he apparently takes and runs off with? Seemingly to like eat or something? That would've been weird af and honestly not really fit that well with the rest of the movie. Apparently clips from it were worked into that "I know you're out there and I know you're real!" clip. Also I actually saw a podcast which was had with like some producers or something from the movie, I can't remember the roles specifically but like apparently in there they name dropped that the Olive garden stuff wasn't even a sponsorship. The writers just thought it'd be a funny running joke. Like I think the only actual sponsorship in the movie was for that apartment service in the beginning that was so forcefully cut towards.
I respect your opinion but if you knew what happened behind to scenes you would know they didn't give them alot of freedom and the second movie will be way more grand because there giving them more freedom to expand the world
This film didn’t have enough sonic for a sonic movie in my opinion. What it did well enough however was setting up a future movie franchise from a simple film that played it a bit too safe. It is safe to say that the sequel to this movie will do everything better and then some
I know that technically it's too early to introduce them if they do intend on making the movies something like the MCU, but I felt like it was a missed opportunity to just...sneak G.U N. In there as the military force they send at the beginning of the movie (Eggman not included) which would have worked better with how uneasy they were to get Eggman's help in the first place, since GUN isn't necessarily fond of Eggman either
To be fair, this would be before ol' Robotnik went full-on megalomaniac (at least publicly), so they wouldn't have _that_ much reason to mistrust him other than his eccentric qualities and constant condescension.
@@syweb2 Thats true, still would've like to see it though. Then again I think the comment was made to make a Sonic movie universe kind of thing (Smu?) AFTER the success of the first one, so they probably didn't think of G.U.N
Being honest, I loved the movie personally but can definitely see its issues, especially after rewatches. I also always thought that the movie never looked that bad before the redesign, though I was still cautiously optimistic and only went in with moderate expectations, and ended up being pleasantly surprised.
I get what your saying, personally if it's about the plot the movie isn't very appealing to me, but tend to watch these movies for the comedy and the references and it took me by surprise that they did it pretty well. And just like social media say the 1st one give a good start and 2nd one boosted the story to an incredible level although it was pretty predictable.
10:08 The reason why Sonic doesn't want to take his gloves off is because 1.) That's a mandate sonic characters can't take of there gloves and 2.) It will be werid. And lastly 3.) If you were in a dangerous situation you may not think very well you know. And sonic is only 12 in the movie so his kinda dumb. I give the movie a 8/10 the problems I have are. - Sonic floosing. -Saying the jiggle of olive garden.(I don't mind the advertisements in the movie like other's.) - Sonic and Tom's fight (sonic being a jerk and not letting tom and maddie leave green hills for more adventures.)
Well this review certainly came at a appropiate time considering whats happening on Twitter. Well that aside this is an excellent review. While i still like the movie i completely understand where you are coming from and even showed me some issues i didnt notice before. I liked that you didnt just go "oh its nothing like the games in 1:1 its doing its own thing that is wrong". No you gave it fair criticism that can be acted on in the sequel. Thats something i really appreciate.
10:45 you are very much not wrong... but still, I cant help but feel like if they used the original design, it would then be a mostly good movie that unfortunately was taken down a couple pegs by sonic's design. Id rag on it day in day out, for sure, but im glad we got a movie I can enjoy rather than enjoy hating on.
i wonder how many people clicked on this video just to trash on his opinion but instead get instantly shut down by the first sentence. well someone probably still got mad anyways
The movie was okay. Wasn’t amazing, the ads were annoying, but it definitely had it’s moments that couldn’t help but be enjoyable. But, my favorite part of the movie was after it was all said and done. Not because it was over, I personally enjoyed the movie, but because of one, simple thing. One thing that was hidden behind the credits. Spoilers below! Tails. Holy SHIT tails. I fucking love his design. He’s adorable through-and-through, I want to hug him, and although he only gets like 10 seconds of screentime, it makes me rather excited to see what the next movie has in store. Hopefully that lil’ fluffy fox dude makes the sequel FAR better.
See going into the film expecting the action, explosions and shit from the games as a long time fan in a movie that was for the mainstream audience as well as both old and new fans is bound to ensure dissappointment to the game fans for not being like the games. But, and hear me out, for a movie that started off with controversy, it actually accomplished what they set out to do since not everyone has played the games like some of us did. To tons of kids and adults it was their first hand exposure to Sonic with some even going ahead and buying merch or recent games because of the film. I looked forward to seeing it and personally enjoyed all of it, despite knowing that it wasnt like the games. I honestly couldnt think of how to translate the Mega Drive/Genesis games as movies even if i tried. Unlike the Adventure games, i can list enough Sonic games that arent exactly great for game to big screen translation and its kinda difficult to even do that as you can see from all the video game movies (apart from the Pokèmon spinoff or certain other rare exceptions) prior and the stuff that came since.
Maybe Sonic was just really attached to his gloves? Pun intended. If I had to sacrifice my signature handwear which I totally have to save myself, I'm probably going to think twice about it. In the scene, its not even the bomb being on his glove knocking him out: he puts it on a rock and walks away, but was just a little too close to the blast. Even if he wasn't wearing a glove, he would've been KO'd anyway.
That still doesn't make sense. The most logical choice is always choose your life to save over a piece of clothing you wear. It's a flaw of the film at the end of the day. Also, the film never mentions why the gloves mean so much to him. It's obvious this scene is meant towards Sonic in his original design in the film.
I feel like saying he's characterization isn't like the games is a bad point to make since the games themselves don't know how to keep his character constant. I mean try comparing sonic from black knight to colors.
Honestly that's why even after the redesign I still didn't see the movie yet. The story and character writing come first. It's the same problem Space Jam 2 has where people are only focused on how they changed Lola's design rather than how the rest of the movie will be. Also LeBron James instead of Michael Jordan, big deal. For context regarding the mention of GameGrumps, on episode 1 of their Mania LP, which was quickly dropped because Arin died a few times in Flying Battery Zone and couldn't suck it up when it's LITERALLY HIS JOB, Dan asks why the opening cutscene looked so good compared to Unleashed, and Arin says it's because it was "made with love," implying the people who did the CGI for Unleashed did not have passion for their work. Of course it's easy for someone like Arin to think that way when he's only ever done 2D Animation himself, and Dan has been getting his impression of games tainted by him for years.
3:38 Finally, someone else calling out the Game Grumps for mindlessly hating on Sonic games! Why does Arin get all these sponsorships from Sega if he is not a Sonic fan? After all, Sonic fans absolutely HATE Arin.
So I had a bad theater experience too but instead of loud kids it was the room filled with no laughter when genuine good jokes hit. Like there was no laughing at all. Not from kids or adults. It was pretty sad but when it came to the end it seemed that everyone liked the film.
Even though I enjoy the film, I’m not a big fan of the comedic approach. I just really hope the next movie is a bit more serious. It would be interesting if Sonic matures as a character and acts more like a 15 year old in the sequel. I enjoyed the movie but I always DREAMED of a full-on CGI movie with the style and action of Unleashed’s cutscenes. My opinions on the film have been all over the place, but I’d never call it bad. I just hope the next film feels more like... Sonic Honestly, I’d probably give the movie around a 70% I just really really wish we got a CGI only movie that connected more with the games. That would of also made room for more Sonic characters like Shadow, Knuckles, Tails, and Silver
First off, it had tails, second off. This is a whole different series of sonic. A different storyline. When did you have lots of characters in the first sonic game? They didn’t cus it was the beginning. And this is a different beginning too.
Honestly I respect your opinion, I love this damn movie with the idea of this being in another universe specifically catering to this “movie Sonic”, and not apart of the universe that the games play in. But ya I love the movie personally😂
I still hold this movie in pretty high regard, but I respect your opinion. There were definite flaws, but for me, the vast amounts of good such as nailing Sonic's character for the most part, the fast-paced action, some of the jokes, and everything involving Jim Carrey, outweighed any of the bad it had. I can't wait for the sequel to come out next year.
4:06 How I'm hearing this: "No one is interested." I am expecting a good story to come with it to make the action have substance. At least a well, crazy, interesting plot.
I think that's a somewhat... off interpretation of what he said, but alright. I figured he meant it more along the lines of "only here for Godzilla": a lot of people like Sonic for the speed and action, and so long as the plot is alright and facilitates that, they'll be perfectly satisfied. He might have underestimated the number of people who enjoy the story of Sonic games, he might not have. In either case, I think you took his comment as much more dismissive than was intended.
@@syweb2 Yeah, I did. I just don’t like how that’s a generalized idea, that the stories don’t matter but speed and action. The best Sonic stories to me are the ones where they get experimental. When they don’t, he comes across as every other property, safe but not Sonic. The “only speed and action” thing got tired after Sonic 1, because that’s all it was storywise. Sonic 2 was the same but made it more interesting by introducing a Sonic clone(1st time), a full Robotnik Mech(1st time), and the death egg(all 1st time but experimental).
this movie has good elements but i definitely don't like it as much as others. a good portion of the praise is definitely due to the bar being set so astronomically low by previous video game films
I really don’t see the difference between this movie and Alvin & The Chipmunks, The Smurfs, Hop, etc. Really just cliched, formulaic, low-hanging kids movie schlock IMO.
@@conic2721 I mean, the effort it did have put into it led to all the people working on the VFX to crunch and get laid off, so I wouldn't necessarily put that down as a positive.
Despite your criticism, I still love this movie. I'd waited for a live action Sonic film since 2002 when I was a kid so I kind of grew a strong emotional attachment for the film as I waited so long for it. The fact a Sonic the Hedgehog movie came out in my lifetime makes me so much happiness and I consider it as one of my favorite films of all time. Before you judge me by sending me cynical or sarcastic replies my favorite film is Donnie Darko.
I personally really liked the movie, but this video was well made and had valid criticisms, so good job. I don't like the movie any less now, but I understand why you and others don't like it as much.
I really enjoy the Sonic movie, but I can see why you didn’t like it. I do wish that the movie was more so catered towards adults in terms of comedy, I cringed hardcore when Sonic flossed twice and farted. In fact the theatre I was in wasn’t a fan of that. Hopefully the second movie is better, but I did like this one.
I believe the reason people hated Sonic's original design, is because previous Live-Action adaptations of nostalgic TV shows and Video games, more often than not, make Merchandise for said movie, despite critics talking negatively about it. I mean think about it. Would you wanna see plush toys of Sonic's Satan design on store shelves, everywhere you look?(I know I wouldn't!)
But in all seriousness even as someone who liked the movie yeah this is barely a sonic movie. The fact that Sonic stayed in one place rather than moving around was really stupid. Maybe he gets constantly chased out so he has to keep running. Maybe even frame the conflict with what’s his face less as Sonic not wanting him to move, but rather sonic not wanting him to become the authority that’s been chasing him for so long. But yeah they better drop the cop from the next movie because it should be a _Sonic_ movie, y'know about Sonic.
I don't disagree that Sonic's outburst about leaving Green Hills was a little overdramatic. But it makes perfect sense for his character at this point. He had a perfect life in what he considered a paradise, but he was forced out of that life after witnessing the death of his only loved one. The trauma he endured made him judgemental of Tom because he's actively making the choice to leave, not being pushed to do so. It seems selfish in Sonic's eyes to leave somewhere you call home when some people don't have that luxury. Edit for the glove thing: He's a cartoon character. The gloves are an extension of their designs and are supposed to not be considered more than hands. In other words, you basically pretend he's not wearing them. It's just kind of one of those unwritten rules about gloved characters
I found the Olive Garden jokes funny solely because of how blatant and out of place they were. The best part of the movie though was the huge amount of references. There were so many and I loved all of them!
Not sure if I agree with the whole theory of the change in Sonic’s design persuading fans into not caring about the other aspects of the film as much, but I can see where you’re coming from.
When Sonic was eventually re-designed, I was honestly expecting everyone to forget about the old design and proclaim that complaining about his old design would make you look really dated.
I was expecting someone to bring up how the people making and animating the new design were screwed over and the director's lies that they wouldn't be, but I guess we can't all have what we want huh lol
@@meta527II Well, when the redesign was announced, the director of the movie said that the VFX artists working on it wouldn't have to work overtime to get it done. That was a lie. They had to work overtime to get it done. Nothing was done to make sure they didn't have to.
The movie isn’t amazing, but I do enjoy it a lot. Sure, this Sonic isn’t exactly accurate to the games, but considering the state Sonic’s been for the past to few years, I like how Sonic has more to his character than just “cocky jackass who talks too much.” I think the reason they kept things simple was just to ease newcomers in, and they are definitely leaning more towards the source material with the sequel, given that it not only has Tails, but also Knuckles and possibly the Chaos Emeralds too.
For me, this film was a fun time, though I do agree with most of what you said. That attempt at third-act break-up was both dumb and framed wrong. Props to Tom’s character at least for handling it well so it didn’t really become a “break-up”. Still completely unnecessary, though.
The movie is just kind of generic but inoffensive. I like the references, and I'm exited for the sequel. Jim Carrey was great, and the highlight for me. Wish it was more of a video game movie, but it's whatever.
On the topic of the incredibles, do the injustice animated film when it comes out. If it anything like the comics rather than the games, well you're in a show for tonight

The writers thought it was funny and paid Olive Garden to use their name in the joke.

same! and they’re the two things that matter the most so at least sonic and robotnik are both likable (and prob the best parts of the movie)
Everyone assuming 'Green Hills' is related to Green Hill Zone forgets about Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Green Hills Zone.
The Sega Genesis games are more known than the Master System games so I can see why they think it's related to Green Hill Zone

I disagree, i feel like this movie was written by people who actually understood the franchise and others who tried. The amount of references and character put into it its hard to miss. The fact that they even put the movie on hold to change sonics design speaks alot. To even have character development were we see sonic becoming what we know him as is pretty great, as this is an origins story

I agree with most of your criticisms; notably the seen with Sonic and Marsden in the car and Sonic chewing him out (I never actually thought about how kinda rude it was) but I do take issue with one thing:
That this film should've matched the energy of the games.
Exactly. Shows like avatar, ben 10, samurai jack, etc did not include dumbed down humor and kids seemed to enjoy it just fine
If you are going to continue reviewing Video Game movies u may want to review the Profesor Layton Movie it's preety good imo
Well, I don't like Sonic to begin with, but this isn't a Sonic movie, it's a "animated character in New York" movie.
The Smurf and Sonic might both be blue but they didn't need to use the same script lol
Hard to say that since the movie wasn’t really all too “wow look at this fictional character interact with our real world,” if anything that’s the first thing they established in the movie. Which is he was on Earth for a long while and knows a lot about the place he’s living in already
At least humans actually exist in the Sonic universe. Plus it wasn't New York.
As were sonic and tales name.)
This "secret father-like" type role that only he remembers is to explain why eggman is ALWAYS teaming up with team sonic at the end of literally every 3D sonic game.
The remainders are at:
• Shrine Isle where we meet Knuckles and the master emerald (the main chunk of the commit) where we get a battle between knuckels and sonic.
Jokes were kinda lame, but the friendship was genuine enough to save the movie
(7/10)+(1 point for Knuckles and Tails cameo)=8/10
5:50 Hey, I have that exact LEGO set! I actually built it last Summer. It's a pretty cool Saturn V replica with separating sections and whatnot.
I enjoyed The Sonic Movie for what it was, but I do hope they bring in more video game aspects into the sequel. The games music would be nice too...
@@syweb2 hmmm. Where do you think the line between over doing it in terms of action scenes is?
I respect your opinion but if you knew what happened behind to scenes you would know they didn't give them alot of freedom and the second movie will be way more grand because there giving them more freedom to expand the world
Wow 2 uploads close together? Dang dude. Thanks. And good luck with the move (if you haven't finished moving yet that is)
This film didn’t have enough sonic for a sonic movie in my opinion. What it did well enough however was setting up a future movie franchise from a simple film that played it a bit too safe. It is safe to say that the sequel to this movie will do everything better and then some
I know that technically it's too early to introduce them if they do intend on making the movies something like the MCU, but I felt like it was a missed opportunity to just...sneak G.U
I like this movie, but I get it. Also I'd love love LOVE to see you take a look at miitopia tho no pressure or anything 🔥🔥
Being honest, I loved the movie personally but can definitely see its issues, especially after rewatches. I also always thought that the movie never looked that bad before the redesign, though I was still cautiously optimistic and only went in with moderate expectations, and ended up being pleasantly surprised.
The score is really high because of low expectations
Great stuff! Make sure to still do youre gaming stuff too! love this as a secondary series though
I work at an AMC and the lights turn off automatically not us workers fault. Next time feel free to talk to the works and we will be happy to help.
10:08
The reason why Sonic doesn't want to take his gloves off is because 1.) That's a mandate sonic characters can't take of there gloves and 2.) It will be werid. And lastly 3.) If you were in a dangerous situation you may not think very well you know. And sonic is only 12 in the movie so his kinda dumb.
I give the movie a 8/10 the problems I have are.
- Sonic floosing.
-Saying the jiggle of olive garden.(I don't mind the advertisements in the movie like other's.)
- Sonic and Tom's fight (sonic being a jerk and not letting tom and maddie leave green hills for more adventures.)
What's going on in Twitter? I avoid that site like the plague, so I wouldn't know.
8:00 SiloHawk’s words match what Sonic is saying. 🤯
Money question mark
So I had a bad theater experience too but instead of loud kids it was the room filled with no laughter when genuine good jokes hit. Like there was no laughing at all. Not from kids or adults. It was pretty sad but when it came to the end it seemed that everyone liked the film.
I love the movie itself, but I never really played the Sonic games, so I maybe can't judge. I kinda like how they did it.
I really can't wait for the sequel
Yes, they really should've made the movie more like the cutscenes of unleashed.
Sonic
Honestly, I’d probably give the movie around a 70%
I just really really wish we got a CGI only movie that connected more with the games. That would of also made room for more Sonic characters like Shadow, Knuckles, Tails, and Silver
I love this movie but I wish it had more characters like tails and Amy rose
... did you really saw the movie?
Did you see the after-credits scene?
First off, it had tails, second off. This is a whole different series of sonic. A different storyline. When did you have lots of characters in the first sonic game? They didn’t cus it was the beginning. And this is a different beginning too.
I think that my least favorite thing about this movie is we had to watch just an okay buddy cop movie to get to an actual sonic movie
I mean its sonic 1 the movie
Am i the only person who found sonic 1 underwhelming?
This was a great review!
Are you ever gonna review the rest of the Jackbox games? If you got bored of doing them that's totally understandable.
The mortal combat movie has gotta be next
Honestly I respect your opinion, I love this damn movie with the idea of this being in another universe specifically catering to this “movie Sonic”, and not apart of the universe that the games play in. But ya I love the movie personally😂
I still hold this movie in pretty high regard, but I respect your opinion. There were definite flaws, but for me, the vast amounts of good such as nailing Sonic's character for the most part, the fast-paced action, some of the jokes, and everything involving Jim Carrey, outweighed any of the bad it had. I can't wait for the sequel to come out next year.
I'm too want to see a unique take with tails.
This had some effort at least.
*at least SOME*
@@conic2721 I mean, the effort it did have put into it led to all the people working on the VFX to crunch and get laid off, so I wouldn't necessarily put that down as a positive.
When did you die??
@@moosesues8887 I die a long time ago; I'm just a ghost writing this.
@@Supermariorpg6 oh ok good
I kinda want to see baby sonic as the original design
an action packed story would be good... but not having a plot in a movie doesn't usually turn out very well
I personally really liked the movie, but this video was well made and had valid criticisms, so good job.
I believe the reason people hated Sonic's original design,
is because previous Live-Action adaptations of nostalgic TV shows and Video games,
more often than not, make Merchandise for said movie, despite critics talking negatively about it.
I mean think about it. Would you wanna see plush toys of Sonic's Satan design on store shelves, everywhere you look?(I know I wouldn't!)
The sequel has Knuckles in it that clearly makes it automatically 100 times better
@@OneAndOnlyDanky Apparently the Cop is going to a trip during 2.
This is a live-action setting, and we're left to assume they're gloves by default since that's what they look like and we're not told otherwise.
I liked the live action Dora movie.
Why wouldn't I like the Sonic movie?
Lion King was awful though. They cut out some of the best scenes.
All i have to say! Is i respect you're opinion and while i may not agree with it, i am atleast glad to hear someone else's thoughts.
Peasham what do you mean?
When Mario Party DS? 👀
