EWJ has to be one of the coolest games i ever played, there is nothing like him because you are literally playing a saturday morning cartoon down to the nonsensical cartoony wacky plot. But what makes EWJ so appealing its not just because its a "playable cartoon" but because of Jim himself, he has to be one of the most strange and downright charming videogame characters i ever saw, his attitude and way of doing things is so unique that most of what i create as characters and other sorts of ideas mostly comes one way or another from him and his game, also i always liked the art of Ten Napel (i know how bad the guy can be ok? i like his art not the person itself) mostly from the game The Neverhood where things are even wackier than Jim and always had Klaymen and Jim as one of my most beloved cartoon videogame characters of all time.

Wait, wait, wait… another person has been pegged “transphobic”? *sigh* You know, there is quite a lot unstated nuance when that statement is made about anyone. I have no idea what the creator if this game is guilty or not guilty of….but I’ll say this, throwing people into a negatively viewed group and calling it a day is dangerous. It reminds me of when Bill Cosby and Louie CK were both being called “sexual assault perpetrators”. While technically true, the golf between those two was almost as vast as the difference between calling human and a cat both creatures that enjoy hunting. Sure, that is true on the surface but there is so much lost in the details there.
When I was a kid I first started liking earthworm Jim simply because his gun shot really fast and he didn't have limited ammo, back then a lot of the games that were like that always regulated how fast you could shoot or just limited how much you could shoot. 🤷♂️ Then the art style was something I found appealing as well since it was so unique at the time
Yeah, the first Earthworm Jim game pretty rough around the edges, and way too hard for its own good. Earthworm Jim 2 is a VASTLY better game, and I strongly recommend it, especially now that it's out on Nintendo Switch Online.
It's worth noting the Sega CD version is probably the best version of the game. There's expanded sections of existing levels and an additional level on top of that. There's also a password system (sadly no actual save system), and some bonus endings depending on difficulty. The music ends up being the best of the three old versions as well.
Never apologize to the mob. They will never be satisfied. Stand your ground. Just the fact that you had to apologize in this video about 4 times. Like you said “ I was proud of the work I put into that video”. Enough said.
This "call out" thing gets tiring. Having to denounce someone or face the consequences before reviewing their 25+ year old game is tiring. Everything revolves around politics and identity it kills creativity.
There was a new Earthworm Jim cartoon announced in November of 2021,called "Earthworm Jim Beyond the Groovy".There is only a interview video with Jim as of yet,but I'm excited for it!
“I’m just going to talk about the game. But first, I’m going to make sure I get some virtue signaling out of the way because I’m so terrified of losing viewers.” 🙄
The one thing I wanted to see was him completing For Pete's Sake the long way. He is the completionist so taking the easy way out isn't full completion!
Earthworm Jim is the kinda game someone can point to and confidentiality say “that piece of media right there, that game captures what the 90s was all about. For better and for worse”.
it's funny, games back then were made so stupidly hard because if they were easy, you would complete them in 1 to 3 hours and not bother actually buying, just rent. but like, with old arcade games, when you play them now, they will include infinite credits ability in some way., there's no "turn off the stupidly intense difficulty preventing you from beating the game in a timely fashion" from 90s console games.
Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life... all kind of crazy weird hilarious animations from the mid 90's. This just for the nostalgic market that was captivating kids of the era. There were other cartoons in there as well that one could say this fit with.
Let's be honest, even if Aladdin for Genesis/Megadrive is amazing, Shiny Entertainment has never mastered the art of the hitboxes... You get use it, but it is hard work to finish any game they developped... I found many tricks to finish Earthwork Jim "easily" but it took me hours of play to find them and optimize my runs! And this is also why I still prefer Aladdin by Capcom on Super Nintendo. It is a pleasure to play the game, not hard work...
you need to do Cris tales it's a game about time travel and it's very cute and it has a nice twist at the end there's not that many collectibles but I think you'll enjoy it.
Here's the correctionist to correct another of Jirard's many errors. The SNES version of Earthworm Jim is not actually identical to the Sega Genesis version. The music is designed with the Genesis sound chip in mind and sounds much better than the muffled SNES port. Also, there's an entire level titled "Intestinal Distress" that was removed for the SNES version. Simply put, the SNES version is incomplete. The completionist should always play the more complete version of everything.
I don't understand why people can connect a game with someone's political views, when it's not represented in the game. These are those types of people that have nothing better to do in their lives than to tell the world what to think and not to.
Id argue what TenNapel was doing is more than just something you could simply disagree with. Covid denial, defending the use of homophobic and racial slurs, claiming that black people were "praying that a black man would have a cop kneel on them" etc. Kind of hard to separate the art from the artist at that point.
I think it's fair for people to disagree with someone's political views, or being an asshole, without involving the art because that art was a product he made during his job.
Even though I'm a pretty big EWJ fan, I gotta admit: I too did NOT grow up with the series. It wasn't until much later in my life when I tried the first game on Game Boy Advance when I became a fan. Still, I respect Earthworm Jim for what it is: A batshit insane run-and-gun with plenty of good humor and surreal enviorments. Earthworm Jim 2 on SEGA Saturn remains to this day my favorite video game of all-time, and the animated series is just as warped and hilarious as the games are... Regardless, I understand the series may not be for everyone, especially those who did not grow up with it like I did, or people who hate the guts of his trashbag creator (seriously, the less we speak of him, the better...), because as humans, we're all different. Recently, a NEW Earthworm Jim animated series has been announced, and while it may not be the ideal comeback most fans want, me personally? I always found Jim more appealing in his cartoon than in his games. And while this time Jim is not being voiced by Dan "Homer Simpson" Castellaneta (yes, that's who voiced him in the OG cartoon...), I'm still gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and HOPE it's still a good series. And considering Te****el is not involved with this project at all, it's a step in the right direction already...
I've read Doug's comics based on EWJ, and tbh I don't think excluding him is a good idea. The comics are awesome: beautiful art and wonderful storytelling make it stand out as the gold standard for what Jim should be about. Weirdness, humor, action, and heart. Without the heart, the rest falls apart.
Ah, yes, believing in science, holding rational beliefs, and traditional views everyone until VERY recently did relegates everyone who isn't a Twitter person to "trashbag" status. Lovely.
The internet forgets about separate the art from the artist. There will be people who you will disagree with. I can guarantee you half the people you interact with like store employees and who did what in a movie will fall into that category. There is no escaping that cause you will always be supporting someone you don't like even if you outcast all of them you just gave them the biggest thing they needed it a group of outcast pushed out of society to do w.e they deem they want. This is a real problem we are facing today now.
To me the main problem of this game was the same as in Aladdin from the same creator, they prioritized animation over visibility. In both games the character's sprite is quite big and moves fast, which has been a problem in a lot of 2D platformers with limited pixel counts. But nonetheless all the variety of level design puts them among the top tier 16 bit games in my opinion.
If you want to talk about the game without bringing up politics, then just talk about the game without bringing up politics. Going on for several minutes about how you disagree with someone's views only brings attention to whatever you disagree with. Just talk about the game and not mention anything else.
Thanks for warning me about the identitarism in this. Off I go to watch something else.
🏃💨
So many pieces of art were done by bad people or people with controversial opinions. We just not going to talk about them?
15:42 that was a brilliant music transition
When I was a kid I first started liking earthworm Jim simply because his gun shot really fast and he didn't have limited ammo, back then a lot of the games that were like that always regulated how fast you could shoot or just limited how much you could shoot. 🤷♂️ Then the art style was something I found appealing as well since it was so unique at the time
Yeah, the first Earthworm Jim game pretty rough around the edges, and way too hard for its own good.
Earthworm Jim 2 is a VASTLY better game, and I strongly recommend it, especially now that it's out on Nintendo Switch Online.
Thanks for another great video, Jirard! Always get excited when I see a new upload from you pop up.
I had no idea the HD remaster of EWJ had been pulled from the PS store. I think I downloaded that onto my PS3 back in around 2009 and I still have it.
Halfway into the video and you're still ranting about the games meta and politics, I'm out
These games are incredibly memorable
It's worth noting the Sega CD version is probably the best version of the game. There's expanded sections of existing levels and an additional level on top of that. There's also a password system (sadly no actual save system), and some bonus endings depending on difficulty. The music ends up being the best of the three old versions as well.
This version is the one they ported to Windows.
@@Bradofosho amen. Evil hates good. Evil doesn’t create, it only destroys. Evil hates you, me and anyone who is an individual.
God bless brother 🙏🏻
There was a new Earthworm Jim cartoon announced in November of 2021,called "Earthworm Jim Beyond the Groovy".There is only a interview video with Jim as of yet,but I'm excited for it!
“I’m just going to talk about the game. But first, I’m going to make sure I get some virtue signaling out of the way because I’m so terrified of losing viewers.” 🙄
What do you mean??
There are one copy for SNES classic in Nintendo Switch Online, right? If I'm not mistaken
The ole Earthworm Jim show was great.
Doug Tenapel is correct
The one thing I wanted to see was him completing For Pete's Sake the long way. He is the completionist so taking the easy way out isn't full completion!
@@frostynukacola Good. Completion has been weighing him down for years.
Doug TenNapel is the man. Based and talented.
The idle animations are the best in this game.
So the best part of the game is when you don't have to play it?
Interesting , would you like a game of chess?
Doug isn't "transphobic" or "homophobic" He just doesn't like them.
I'm probably the only person on Earth who liked 2 better than 1...that freaking underwater level.
Just because you dont share an someone's view you can still enjoy the product.
I get it. Even back in the day as a nineties kid, i could tell it was more style than substance.
Earthworm Jim is the kinda game someone can point to and confidentiality say “that piece of media right there, that game captures what the 90s was all about. For better and for worse”.
Ah yes Earthworm Jim, my big brother rented that game a lot when we were kids.
(We owned a Super Nintendo at the time.)
How many New Game Plus episodes are left?
I remember I couldn't even beat this game with a Game Genie. Very very hard game for a kid to play!
it's funny, games back then were made so stupidly hard because if they were easy, you would complete them in 1 to 3 hours and not bother actually buying, just rent.
but like, with old arcade games, when you play them now, they will include infinite credits ability in some way., there's no "turn off the stupidly intense difficulty preventing you from beating the game in a timely fashion" from 90s console games.
holy shit almost 8minutes for the actual review to start. this is a new low
Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life... all kind of crazy weird hilarious animations from the mid 90's. This just for the nostalgic market that was captivating kids of the era.
There were other cartoons in there as well that one could say this fit with.
Just finished The second one this morning for The first time on My switch. .I could finish earthworm Jim 1 with Just a few deaths..love this games
Earthworm Jim Cartoon is awesome too!
Major Mucus didn't join the military to be called "Snot monster" SIR!!!!
Please play Ico! It’s a cult classic and had a huge influence on gaming.
He'll just complain that Ico is a misogynist because he dares to lead Strong Woman Yorda around by the hand.
you need to do Cris tales it's a game about time travel and it's very cute and it has a nice twist at the end there's not that many collectibles but I think you'll enjoy it.
He mentions that the Genesis has an additional level compared to the SNES.
@@McSomething15 He doesn't mention the soundtrack. Pay attention to the WHOLE comment, don't just cherry pick pieces of what I said.
Great game. Hilarious cartoon series.
The Sword of Rightousness: "Fear me, o' tree,"
Tell the truth. You had to run it by frosk to see if you could make this video didn't you?
Opening the video with Maximum Carnage got my attention. I don't know anyone else who played it.
Lol... Xplay. Not much of a namedrop is it.
Lovely.
@@gagnose26 But Doug knows biology, it's very problematic, you see. He must be unpersoned for wrongthink.
I never desired to play this game but now that I know the creator is a homophobe like me I’m going to get this game now, thanks Jirard!
Earthworm Jim All Oh No! Here we go again.
If it is missing levels then is not complete, hence the only way to complete the game is the Sega CD or the Windows 95 version.
I suggested this! THANK YOU!
