Sonic 06 is one of those rare games that are bad, but curiously so. Last year's Balan Wonderworld is another entry in that category, I think. Both feature absolutely baffling design decisions, little to no quality assurance, outdated tech and so on. Both have one weirdly solid aspect that just stands out like a sore thumb among the other details (music in Sonic's case, CGI cutscenes in Balan's). And with both games you get a sense of genuine earnestness that makes it genuinely difficult to hate the game. They're still bad, mind you, but you can't help but be intrigued by them to some degree.
It has the same effect that a certain kind of bad movie. You just go wow that was a terrible decision but they fully committed to it which is shocking.
One thing that I will give 06 is how much better the game treats Shadow's character, he no longer holds a gun, he's no longer a whiny edgelord, he's back to being his normal self, he helps Sonic when he needs it, he acts as a mentor to Silver, he chooses to fight til the end even when people turn against him instead of siding with Mephiles, and he has some nice little moments with Omega and Rouge that reminded me so much of their relationship in Sonic Heroes. Sad to say that this is the last game that treated him with that kind of respect, referring to Rise of Lyric and Forces, two games that used him for fanservice and butchered his character in both of them.
9:15 fun fact: SEGA didn't make the CGI for this game, it was outsourced to a company called Blur Studios, they also made the CGI for Shadow The Hedgehog. That's why the CGI looks different than the actual game (and way better in my opinion)

I'm happy this video wasn't just a "Sonic 2006 sucks" compilation for 30 minutes. I appreciate the actual analysis and more in-depth thought about the game, it's development history, and so forth. It made the video way more interesting and pleasant to listen to.
Same, as someone whos favorite sonic character is Silver and Ive had my fair share of people shitting on me for liking him, Sonic 06 was one of the first exposure to Sonic I had due to people at the time making fun of it on YT.
I agree. Game development is hard because of the overpaid people in charge who mess things up. The actual developers want to make good work and highlighting the story behind the games is a good approach.

Really enjoyed this one, brings me back. I played way too much of this game as a kid. Many people had already given it the good ol' fashioned negative review but I bought it anyway, just have a good laugh with one of my childhood friends, whether it be the solo adventure or the hilarious multiplayer antics that ensue when Silver is chosen.
Same honestly! I bought the game despite the bad reviews and had a lot of fun playing it! Also it would be cool if Sega brought back the local co op and vs modes in mainline Sonic games! Those were really fun in Sonic 06!
Personally, I'd give this game the rating of "Speedrun it!" A rushed and broken game as long as this one may be a chore to finish and an absolute slog to complete casually, but it makes for an _amazing_ speed game.
Yeah. It isn't a game like Balan Wonderworld or WWE 2K20 that, while infamous, it most likely is gonna be forgotten fast. Sonic 06 left a huge stain on the franchise that made many fans upset. And even in the year 2022, not all of them came back.
I didn't know the reason for NG+'s existence until a few months ago and with that revelation, my respect for the completer guy grew tenfold. Jirard, you and your terrible jokes are a treasure and a pillar of the community. Thanks for everything you do.
@@yamen0320 On the first 120 episodes Jirard had a friend as a cohost, him and that friend had a falling out and the friend asked Jirard to remove all videos with him in it. Jirard didn’t have to remove those videos legally speaking, but he did anyways. New Game Plus is a series where he recompletes the games from the original 120 videos that are now gone.
@@DSFII yeah, that co-host waited until two years after their falling out to ask them to be removed because he "didnt want the channel killed". It was grimy, whiny and petty. Jirard showed so much patience in dealing with this and redoing all that work.
I honestly do think Sonic 06 would’ve turned out much differently with Yuji Naka involved. Would’ve been interesting to see his influence on the direction one last time
Yuji Naka wasn't the only thing that impacted Sonic games though, and not even all the ones he directed were great or aged well. I don't think he by himself could have salvaged a rushed, unfinished product.
Some people think that Sonic can’t swim because Yuji had a false idea that hedgehogs couldn’t swim (he had quality control for the Sonic games, but even he can have his flaws like everyone else), some other people think he was too busy being a jackass to his friends (especially Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Zeena even though the Deadly Six (or so they think just to make Sonic look more than evil because they) were clearly enemies) even though he was a hero in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s (in the comics and shows, at least).
This is the most wholesome review of this game ive seen yet. We need more people like you to be the face of gamers out there, please distance yourself from that toxic network.
Toxic gamer videos can still work, but many of them back then were chasing AVGN glory without understanding a key component of what made that work. It was always an over-the-top satire. Nobody ever thought AVGN accurately represented James Rolfe. Most angry gamers afterward, however, presented themselves as if their over-the-top anger was authentic, which, yes, did the perception of gamers and gaming culture no favors.

This is one of the most empathetic takes I've ever seen on this game. I especially love how you opened with saying "The developers never wanted to create a bad game...they wanted to create something truly special for Sonic." Unfortunately, the odds were just stacked against Sonic Team far too much. Great job, man!
I get when people come from this angle, but at the end of the day they still charged money for THIS. It's not like it was a passion project, it was a product made to sell and when we say that the game is awfull, that doesn't mean we hate on the developers. More often than not a bad game is bad because of upper management. But in the end, the result is what matters and the result is one of the worst games to ever be made.
@@EskChan19 He still made it clear this is a very bad game. I think it is best when you focus on the corporate culture that ruined a game like this. It is part of why I wish Angry Joe would go back to using Corporate Commander. It allowed him to do his angry gamer thing while channeling that explicitly toward where that anger belongs.

It takes a pro to fully complete Mega Man X, It takes a master of reflexes to fully complete Crash Bandicoot 4. It takes an absolute soldier like The Completionist to fully complete Sonic The Hedgehog 2006.
I love that Jirard is being the type of games youtuber that doesn’t go “This game sucks donkey balls in hell,” and instead is like “They were under a lot of pressure and were trying to do what they could with their limited resources.” Mad respect.

I'm glad you can change as a person Jirard after the 100th episode and you looked back at 06 with a fresh new look. I mean hey 06 is just like the other new games that come out like Balan Wonderland, GTA Definitive Edition, Cyberpunk, and FNAF Security Breach, all they have in common was they were rushed, rushed because of fans wanted it and rushed because money was there. I just wish the gaming industry cared about the game and not about the money they could make, because if you go the money route, it'll just make the game bad.
I went out and bought my copy of Sonic 2006 specifically so I could contribute a skit to your original review of this game. Very surreal to see this game on your channel, once again. The skit I created didn't actually destroy or damage my copy of the game, and I still have it to this day. I've still yet to ever play Sonic 06, but I have every intention of doing so, someday. It's an iconic landmark in video game history, to say the absolute least. And I agree with you in which I've always seen that there ARE signs of potential for what this game could've been. It's really cool to hear about Project 06 and all the work that's getting poured into creating a better experience of this game for everyone. I look forward to seeing how that all turns out. Who knows, perhaps the ones working on that will be allowed to work on an official 3D Sonic game in the future, similar to the opportunity given to those who gave us Sonic Mania. 100 games down... 20 more to go... You're original episodes was one that seemed incredibly difficult and I'm glad you came back to it. Also that mention of Project 06 was incredible. A bad game isn't bad forever when you have passionate fans like Sonic fans. All of Sonic Teams games since then made huge steps in improving the performance, polish, and aesthetic of each game before it and I hope all that experience leads Sonic Frontiers to be a incredible project.

This is one of those games I have a fair bit of nostalgia for and loved when I was younger, and it was only after coming back to it years later I could see it's flaws. The difficult levels I experienced weren't difficult, they were buggy. Despite that Jirard is totally right, the potential is clearly there and can be seen through fan remakes like P-06 and mods like Legacy of Solaris! I recently played through Sonic's campaign using the Legacy of Solaris mod and had a great time!
Kinda heartwarming to see the completionist rating go up But man, almost done with NG+. Only 20 to go and then the weight is gone. I like how the game developers kept sonic and tails cartoon looking while trying to make elise look as realistic as possible. That akward clash of visual styles during cutscenes really sums up this game
I remember finding this channel around episode 90 and I loved/hated how "corrupted" this game made Jirard; loved because it was just a funny skit, hated because even though I know the game is hot garbage to play but this still was one of my favorite sonic games. I was so bummed knowing I could never go back to the original video, but I'm glad this game is getting a more... fair review this time round
This one brings back a lot of memories both old and new. I really enjoyed being in chat and seeing the Completion process and just hanging out with everyone. Also super cool that even games like 06 have followings dedicated enough to essentially make sure it isn't erased from gaming history.
I'm glad to see someone who's not one of those people who just mindlessly tears into 06 because it's a bad game. I have a serious hatred for people like that, and it's because of those people not shutting up that we don't get anything with the same amount of spectacle and potential 06 had nowadays.
You should do a "Completionist, MOD Packed" series. Where you replay games, but this time with a large pack of community favorite mods (as much as your computer can handle). The fallout games, the gta games, skyrim, minecraft, etc. This game is also one of them. You mentioned and played the huge fan project that completely fixed Sonic 06 and it's absolutely amazing. Displaying community projects and the hard work of dedicated fans to make any game the best it can possibly be, and they do all that work for free, yet often match or surpass what massive companies can do, would be very nice.
A "demake" would be so hard to fathom because the effects of 06 FUNDAMENTALLY changed Sonic Team and the Sonic franchise. We wouldn't get the colors style comedy, we may not have gotten the unleashed boost, we may not have gotten generations without playable side characters. Everything would've been different.
I can't believe how as the years go on I've realised that Sonic '06 is basically just a Sonic Yakuza Sub Story game with the Gold medals, it feels very much like Yakuza's completion lists.
Fun fact. This game was the last main Sonic game (not counting Black Knight and Zero Gravity) that was written by Shiro Maekawa. He was the one who made the stories of Sa2 and Heroes. He created Shadow as a character. Yet he didn’t have anything to do with the Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off, which is why the game completely butchered Shadows character while 06, despite its terrible story kept Shadows character mostly intact and was the last game to do so (since he wasn’t in Zero gravity and was a different person in Black Knight) Which I think is part of the reason Shadows character still sucks.
I don't know about butchered, after everything that happened in SA2 it kind of makes sense that Shadow had a bit of an identity crisis (especially as the invading alien species came in to throw another wrench into what he knows about his past,) but you know to each his own, we both have different opinions and that's ok. Thanks for the fun fact, always cool to learn more about a franchise you like.

Haven't watched the review yet, but I just want to talk about my experience with this game real quick. I come from a younger generation, and this was the first game I ever played. I loved everything about this game, it provided challenge, it had an engaging story, and the level design was fun. It wasn't until Jirard's original review of this game that I realized the negative reception. Due to my constant fear of being judged and wanting to blend in with the crowd, I stopped liking 06, I acted like I hated it, and destroyed my copy of the game, with the same friend I grew up playing it with. Now that I'm older, I don't care what other people think, I love this game, it tried many new things, it wasn't scared, dare I say, it was ambitious. I get why you wouldn't like this game, it's jank as all hell, and the story is garbage, but this game has a special place in my heart, and I hope people can respect that, just like I respect anyone who doesn't like this game. Edit: After watching this review, I'm proud. This game has received it's love from die hard fans, but it's now nice to see someone outside of those die hard realize this games potential. Please, go play P-06, it's amazing, I'm so glad Jirard was able to realize what this game could have been. I appreciate this review a lot.
As well as P-06 it's also worth checking out the Legacy of Solaris mod for the 360 version of the game which fixes bugs and tweaks character control, camera control and all sorts
Metro Kingdom isn't another planet... The kingdoms in Mario Odyssey are either on the same planet or on that planet's moon (with Cloud Kingdom being between those two). The comparison is fair. When I first saw the Metro Kingdom in a trailer, I was concerned that Nintendo might be doing Mario's version on Sonic '06... I was very happy to find that that was not the case. I see Sonic '06, Metroid: Other M, & Zelda: Skyward Sword as being part a trio of sorts... Games that had high expectations on them & lofty ambitions in well established series', but fell short by a lot for various reasons each. I think this one of the three at least has something good in its core, so I plan on trying Project '06 when it's done.
Skyward sword doesn't deserve to be on that list. It's a finished and quality game, it's main issue is simply it's design philosophy isn't for some people.
@@kirin1230 Other M is just as "finished" as Skyward Sword. The biggest pillar that's at the core of the Zelda series is exploration, and this is the one title in the series that doesn't even have an overworld. Also, the biggest bug in the game is the fact that you can't move the wiimote into the next starting position for the next sword swing quickly enough without it counting as a sword swing itself, re-randomizing the enemy's positioning, but moving it slowly times out the current position to re-randomize it, so you're best off just waiting until your current wiimote starting position is where the next sword swing needs to be, dragging out the already otherwise boring combat. Given how core they made this mechanic be... That is absolutely not a finished game right there.

The loading screen joke caught me off guard and destroyed me. Very nice to see a review of this game taking the issues with production into account instead of just mentioning them- and how they affected the team.
Even if the game sucked, I still had fun with Sonic 06. Right now, it's being rejuvenated as a fan game by ChaosX and it kicks ass from what I've seen. If SEGA wants to bring Sonic 06, they should go to ChaosX and his team.
A thing I that I find surprising is despite how I hear SEGA struggled with the PS3 Kit, I played this Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3, which came out one year later, and I didn't get as many bugs as I hear people mention. I tried replicating some of them and it didn't work or I had a minor issue nowhere as big as what I see online. And because I didn't encounter any bug, I greatly enjoyed playing it. I think it show how much one more year of development can do.
I think everyone knows that when we insult this game it isn't an attack on the devs that were forced to work under ridiculous restraints. It's cause the game is bad and it's fun to mock.
Sonic 06 was the last full 3D main series game, and it was the last main series game to feature playable characters that aren't Sonic. What it did well was it's story and characters. Shadow being a Hero, who has gotten over any memory issues from previous games and is now faced with the possibility that the people he works so hard to protect might some day turn on him and worse make his own friend hunt him down. Yet despite that he carries the entire story like a badass. Knuckles is only "Not Smart" as opposed to being "Dumb" which is a much much better fit for the character. Sonic's a genuinely nice person and not the sort of egotistical joker that future games make him out to be. Silver is Trunks, people love Trunks. Lastly Amy is a badass and Sonic know's it, unlike future games that make her a victim for Sonic to rescue (along side all his other friends) this was the last game among the likes of ADX, A2B and Heroes where Sonic is actually kind of scared of Amy, she's got a temper, and the skill to back it up, despite being such a cheerful and obsessive young girl. That moment for both Shadow and Amy where Silver is about to defeat Sonic but they come in, Sonic see's them and knows "These 2 can handle this, I've gotta go get Elise" it feels so good as a fan of these characters to relive when they were like that. 06 Gameplay was unfortunately a 3/10 maybe, and had a ton of potential. However 06 Story was an 8/10 probably, not flawless, but super fucking good.
I personally loved a lot of the bits and humor from the old days of The Completionist, but I'm still happy that Jirard is putting out quality content that people enjoy even if it's different. You do you, man.
Agreed, I really liked those bits and the humor. And I also really liked when Jirard was able to just say that a game was bad. It's gotten a little too... let's say robotic lately, for my taste.
The worst part about Sonic '06 is that there honestly is a good game in there, but, long story short, corporate intervention forced this to be put out before it could have been good. (See quote "A bad game is bad forever, delayed game can be great")
I honestly disagree. The problem with 06 is that, technical stuff aside, it's not really good and, ironically, I think it's more obvious with the p-06 project: sonic's campaign is a nice continuation of his adventure days, but everything else from the forced and repetitive combat sections of shadow, his redundant vehicles, silver campaign that is just "pick stuff, throw stuff", the bad story etc. etc. Prove that 06 didn't have a good design from the start and repeated a lot of hiccups sonic team carried since the adventure titles. I admire and approve p-06, but the stuff they are repairing is not what a lot of people want from a platform based on movement and speed. The whole unfinish aspect of the og release is just the icying on the cake

Jokes aside, you didn't get what I said: people don't want a lot of the design coices of sonic 06, not that they don't want a finished version of the game. If you are making a soeed based platformer, putting a lot of Road blocks like costant enemy rooms that you have to clear, slow vehicles, empty hub worlds and other random BS that don't belong in this type of game and series. I'm not condemming ChaosX, i'm just saying that if the game was finished it couod have been mediocre just like the adventure games

I like your approach to this review. It's always good to look back at something with a fresh pair of eyes and see if your opinion has changed. I still think Sonic 06 sucks, but I will recognize that Sonic Team wanted to make it good. And it sucks that the higher ups and other challenges made that dream turn into a nightmare. To this day, I still hate Silver. I get why he was made, but I hated fighting him as Sonic and Shadow. The amount of times I got cornered, lost every ring, and then immediately getting caught in the next attack before picking up the rings was infuriating. On top of that, the stupid ball section in that one stage, you know the one, was by far the most rage inducing. Still, thanks to you I just downloaded Project 06 and I am excited to play it. Apparently Shadow's episode is now done. Thanks again for an amazing review and here's to another 20 episodes.
Sonic 06 will always have a special place in my heart. When I was like 8 it was the first game we owned on the ps3, and couldn’t figure out how to get to the first world so we just played the multiplayer race mode
Kinda interesting looking back at this game all these years later, especially now with the amazing fan project that is Sonic P-06. Like everyone else, I grew to view this game as just a dark spot in Sonic's history, I could comment on a few things, but would generally accept it as the crappy sonic game to end all crappy Sonic games. But now that I'm older, wiser, and have a way of playing this game in a, dare I say, decent way. I've found a sort of new appreciation for this game. Don't get me wrong, this game still has its problems and is still a problematic and obviously unfinished game. But I've come to appreciate the view the team had and what they wanted to do. They truly did want to bring Sonic to the next generation in a big way. And you can see that, even in the original version. The music, level design and themes, action set pieces, enemy designs, even the story all have this feeling of grandjure. But because of poor management and circumstances, the team only got to make half the game they wanted to make, with the other half being the game that people like to ridicule. Sonic 06 is still an unfinished mess, but to say it's all bad and didn't have thought put into it is honestly not true. The team has always put thought into their games, they just get unlucky at times when it comes to time and development. And they got really unlucky with this one. But like many today, if this game had more time in the oven, it honestly could've been one of Sonic's greatest hits. If people want to see what I'm talking about or get an idea of what a more finished and optimized version of 06 would be like, I highly recommend trying Chaos-X's Sonic P-06 fan game. Basically, the closest thing we have to an official remaster of 06. Heck, the closest thing to feeling like a Sonic Adventure 3 dare I say. Might not entirely change your opinion of 06, but maybe might let you see what Sonic Team wanted to do, and if given more time, could've accomplished. I mean the fact we have a version of 06 that's more playable and less buggy is worth a look alone in my book.
Sonic 06 was being developed during a dark era of SEGA almost ending up in bankrupcy until Sammy (a company from Japan that has nothing to do with game development) adquired them. SEGA of Japan is the problem, the best sonic games made after the Genesis games were made in the USA for the most part. Back then with the Genesis/Megadrive, there were always management problems between SEGA Japan and North America. The Genesis/Megadrive would't be succesful without SEGA North America. I am very glad that you retain the thought of "I just put myself out there." It is more exciting at least for me, as a viewer, to see how you perfect THAT alongside the strange and alien pressures including us, the audience. I have been writing music since I was six and could not retain what you are retaining professionally, so I left it. This speaks to the lack of quality I produced under external pressure. To witness someone navigate the ridiculousness of monetary survival in alternative media spaces in the present is inspiring. That is all I mean to say. It is inspiring to witness what you do man. Honestly, this is weirdly one of my favorite sonic games. I got it when I was 14, was super excited and none of the loading and sluggishness bothered me I guess cause I just love most sonic stuff. I absolutely love project 06 tho. Its what the game felt like to me when i was younger.
I remember when I was a kid we got this game for my younger brother because he really liked playing it with our cousin, glitches and all. Hell, especially because the glitches made the game more fun to play with friends. In the end I guess it ended up finding a place in my heart after all, even if it was for the wrong reasons.
Sonic 06 is the punchline that never truly loses its punch. Since I first saw it, way back when, and even to this day, I still think there's a good game, buried somewhere deep within the train wreck it ended up releasing as. I'm happy that folks are still working to try and make it more playable, so that it can shine the way it never got the chance to, even if it's so many many years after the fact. Even if the script itself is absolute nonsense, especially combined with the voice over and general presentation. Great work on the episode as always, Jirard. Definitely looking forward to whatever comes next, and on a personal note, I enjoy what the show has become quite a bit. Always be you, good sir.

Ah Sonic 06, one of the many Sonic games that I secretly like, but also have a ton of frustrations with. God the things I would do for Sega to call up ChaosX, hire him, and port P-06 to consoles.
I admit when your style changed and you dropped many of your shenanigans I liked the change. I was vocal because I didn't know what would happen to the other members of your team. I didn't want them to be out of a job for this new change. I am sorry that it caused you a bunch of grief transitioning. Especially when you were forced to take the first 120 episodes down. Hi! Sonic 06 apologist here. Despite being a longtime Sonic fan ever since my mom played Sonic Megacollection+ with me as a kid, I never really got into the 3D world of Sonic until around last year. The only two 3D Sonic titles I was familiar with were Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic Unleashed for the Wii. What persuaded me to actually pick up Sonic Adventure 2 was actually a combination of Austin dissing it relentlessly on the Normal Boots debate of best GameCube titles and the Snapcube Fandub of SA2, one of my favorite pieces of content to come out of this platform! After that, I watched the 06 fandub and soon after that I witnessed SomeCallMeJohnny tear into the buggy mess. The morbid curiosity drove me to finally dust off my XBOX 360 and purchase the game online (I was surprised I couldn't buy it on the XBOX store until I remembered it had been unlisted lol). While experiencing it for myself, I saw yet another video from Video Game Apologist, who fantasized about the legendary game 06 could have been if only things hadn't gone south on the development. After hearing some much needed credit to the game's ambition, I actually found myself at a loss. It just got harder to be angry at the glitches, bugs, and *especially* the story because I could finally see the merit in what Sonic Team was going for! No, the game is not "good" by most standards. But I still enjoy playing it for all it's got to show me, warts and all (and I'm not even talking about P06, ChaosX is a god!) All this to say, thank you Jirard. I really appreciate your take on this beautiful disaster ❤
I started following this channel not long before the reason for New Game+. I watched the old episodes, but I always was thrown back because of the immature style of them. I think it was ok for your age and lack of experience, but I enjoy the videos without forced "jokes" waaaaaay more. Congrats to the 100th episode!
Good review, but still.. the one thing I cannot get past when it comes to reviewing Sonic games... is that Jirard keeps forgetting that the robot's name is Omega, not Gamma. I get that he's fixated on Sonic Adventure's E-102 Gamma, but still. It's Omega!! At the end of the day, this is probably the most heartfelt I've ever seen you since first following the show back in 2013. And I understand where you're coming from in terms of changing how the show plays out. To be honest, sketch comedies are funny and all, but I kind of enjoy more down-to-earth reviews of games. And you deliver!

Sonic 06 is one of those rare games that are bad, but curiously so. Last year's Balan Wonderworld is another entry in that category, I think. Both feature absolutely baffling design decisions, little to no quality assurance, outdated tech and so on. Both have one weirdly solid aspect that just stands out like a sore thumb among the other details (music in Sonic's case, CGI cutscenes in Balan's). And with both games you get a sense of genuine earnestness that makes it genuinely difficult to hate the game. They're still bad, mind you, but you can't help but be intrigued by them to some degree.
It has the same effect that a certain kind of bad movie. You just go wow that was a terrible decision but they fully committed to it which is shocking.
One thing that I will give 06 is how much better the game treats Shadow's character, he no longer holds a gun, he's no longer a whiny edgelord, he's back to being his normal self, he helps Sonic when he needs it, he acts as a mentor to Silver, he chooses to fight til the end even when people turn against him instead of siding with Mephiles, and he has some nice little moments with Omega and Rouge that reminded me so much of their relationship in Sonic Heroes.
Sad to say that this is the last game that treated him with that kind of respect, referring to Rise of Lyric and Forces, two games that used him for fanservice and butchered his character in both of them.
Sonic 06 was right when Yuji Naka left, and Balan Wonderworld is what he did after he left...what a coincidence

9:15 fun fact: SEGA didn't make the CGI for this game, it was outsourced to a company called Blur Studios, they also made the CGI for Shadow The Hedgehog. That's why the CGI looks different than the actual game (and way better in my opinion)
Blur Studios are also the ones who made the cinematic cutscenes in Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo Wars 1 and 2 and Halo Infinite, which are also amazing.

I'm happy this video wasn't just a "Sonic 2006 sucks" compilation for 30 minutes. I appreciate the actual analysis and more in-depth thought about the game, it's development history, and so forth. It made the video way more interesting and pleasant to listen to.
Same, as someone whos favorite sonic character is Silver and Ive had my fair share of people shitting on me for liking him, Sonic 06 was one of the first exposure to Sonic I had due to people at the time making fun of it on YT.

Many people had already given it the good ol' fashioned negative review but I bought it anyway, just have a good laugh with one of my childhood friends, whether it be the solo adventure or the hilarious multiplayer antics that ensue when Silver is chosen.

Yeah. It isn't a game like Balan Wonderworld or WWE 2K20 that, while infamous, it most likely is gonna be forgotten fast. Sonic 06 left a huge stain on the franchise that made many fans upset. And even in the year 2022, not all of them came back.

@@yamen0320 On the first 120 episodes Jirard had a friend as a cohost, him and that friend had a falling out and the friend asked Jirard to remove all videos with him in it. Jirard didn’t have to remove those videos legally speaking, but he did anyways. New Game Plus is a series where he recompletes the games from the original 120 videos that are now gone.

I honestly do think Sonic 06 would’ve turned out much differently with Yuji Naka involved. Would’ve been interesting to see his influence on the direction one last time
Yuji Naka wasn't the only thing that impacted Sonic games though, and not even all the ones he directed were great or aged well. I don't think he by himself could have salvaged a rushed, unfinished product.
Some people think that Sonic can’t swim because Yuji had a false idea that hedgehogs couldn’t swim (he had quality control for the Sonic games, but even he can have his flaws like everyone else), some other people think he was too busy being a jackass to his friends (especially Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Zeena even though the Deadly Six (or so they think just to make Sonic look more than evil because they) were clearly enemies) even though he was a hero in the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s (in the comics and shows, at least).
It wouldn't matter, if SEGA just gave sonic team more time I'm sure this game would actually be good

Toxic gamer videos can still work, but many of them back then were chasing AVGN glory without understanding a key component of what made that work. It was always an over-the-top satire. Nobody ever thought AVGN accurately represented James Rolfe. Most angry gamers afterward, however, presented themselves as if their over-the-top anger was authentic, which, yes, did the perception of gamers and gaming culture no favors.

This is one of the most empathetic takes I've ever seen on this game. I especially love how you opened with saying "The developers never wanted to create a bad game...they wanted to create something truly special for Sonic." Unfortunately, the odds were just stacked against Sonic Team far too much.

I get when people come from this angle, but at the end of the day they still charged money for THIS. It's not like it was a passion project, it was a product made to sell and when we say that the game is awfull, that doesn't mean we hate on the developers. More often than not a bad game is bad because of upper management. But in the end, the result is what matters and the result is one of the worst games to ever be made.

Actually, the soundtrack in this game is not by Jun senoue, mostly. The lead composer is Tomoya Othani, who composed almost every mainline sonic ost ever since

I'm glad you can change as a person Jirard after the 100th episode and you looked back at 06 with a fresh new look. I mean hey 06 is just like the other new games that come out like Balan Wonderland, GTA Definitive Edition, Cyberpunk, and FNAF Security Breach, all they have in common was they were rushed, rushed because of fans wanted it and rushed because money was there. I just wish the gaming industry cared about the game and not about the money they could make, because if you go the money route, it'll just make the game bad.
The original Sonic '06 video felt like a culmination of gaming on UA-cam, and was probably one of my favourite moments provided by this platform.
This is why games like this, and not just the masterpieces, needs to be remade/remastered!

I went out and bought my copy of Sonic 2006 specifically so I could contribute a skit to your original review of this game. Very surreal to see this game on your channel, once again. The skit I created didn't actually destroy or damage my copy of the game, and I still have it to this day. I've still yet to ever play Sonic 06, but I have every intention of doing so, someday. It's an iconic landmark in video game history, to say the absolute least. And I agree with you in which I've always seen that there ARE signs of potential for what this game could've been. It's really cool to hear about Project 06 and all the work that's getting poured into creating a better experience of this game for everyone. I look forward to seeing how that all turns out. Who knows, perhaps the ones working on that will be allowed to work on an official 3D Sonic game in the future, similar to the opportunity given to those who gave us Sonic Mania.

A bad game isn't bad forever when you have passionate fans like Sonic fans. All of Sonic Teams games since then made huge steps in improving the performance, polish, and aesthetic of each game before it and I hope all that experience leads Sonic Frontiers to be a incredible project.

This is one of those games I have a fair bit of nostalgia for and loved when I was younger, and it was only after coming back to it years later I could see it's flaws. The difficult levels I experienced weren't difficult, they were buggy. Despite that Jirard is totally right, the potential is clearly there and can be seen through fan remakes like P-06 and mods like Legacy of Solaris! I recently played through Sonic's campaign using the Legacy of Solaris mod and had a great time!

I like how the game developers kept sonic and tails cartoon looking while trying to make elise look as realistic as possible. That akward clash of visual styles during cutscenes really sums up this game

I remember finding this channel around episode 90 and I loved/hated how "corrupted" this game made Jirard; loved because it was just a funny skit, hated because even though I know the game is hot garbage to play but this still was one of my favorite sonic games. I was so bummed knowing I could never go back to the original video, but I'm glad this game is getting a more... fair review this time round
This one brings back a lot of memories both old and new. I really enjoyed being in chat and seeing the Completion process and just hanging out with everyone. Also super cool that even games like 06 have followings dedicated enough to essentially make sure it isn't erased from gaming history.
I'm glad to see someone who's not one of those people who just mindlessly tears into 06 because it's a bad game. I have a serious hatred for people like that, and it's because of those people not shutting up that we don't get anything with the same amount of spectacle and potential 06 had nowadays.

You should do a "Completionist, MOD Packed" series. Where you replay games, but this time with a large pack of community favorite mods (as much as your computer can handle). The fallout games, the gta games, skyrim, minecraft, etc. This game is also one of them. You mentioned and played the huge fan project that completely fixed Sonic 06 and it's absolutely amazing. Displaying community projects and the hard work of dedicated fans to make any game the best it can possibly be, and they do all that work for free, yet often match or surpass what massive companies can do, would be very nice.
What would be better? A “de-make” of Sonic 06, or an actual “make” of Sonic 06?

A "demake" would be so hard to fathom because the effects of 06 FUNDAMENTALLY changed Sonic Team and the Sonic franchise. We wouldn't get the colors style comedy, we may not have gotten the unleashed boost, we may not have gotten generations without playable side characters. Everything would've been different.

I can't believe how as the years go on I've realised that Sonic '06 is basically just a Sonic Yakuza Sub Story game with the Gold medals, it feels very much like Yakuza's completion lists.
Fun fact. This game was the last main Sonic game (not counting Black Knight and Zero Gravity) that was written by Shiro Maekawa. He was the one who made the stories of Sa2 and Heroes. He created Shadow as a character. Yet he didn’t have anything to do with the Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off, which is why the game completely butchered Shadows character while 06, despite its terrible story kept Shadows character mostly intact and was the last game to do so (since he wasn’t in Zero gravity and was a different person in Black Knight)
Which I think is part of the reason Shadows character still sucks.
I don't know about butchered, after everything that happened in SA2 it kind of makes sense that Shadow had a bit of an identity crisis (especially as the invading alien species came in to throw another wrench into what he knows about his past,) but you know to each his own, we both have different opinions and that's ok. Thanks for the fun fact, always cool to learn more about a franchise you like.
So excited this episode is finally out!! The streams of this game being completed were some of the most memorable and enjoyable times I've ever spent on Twitch. Only 20 more to go too! Way to go Jirard!
Haven't watched the review yet, but I just want to talk about my experience with this game real quick. I come from a younger generation, and this was the first game I ever played. I loved everything about this game, it provided challenge, it had an engaging story, and the level design was fun. It wasn't until Jirard's original review of this game that I realized the negative reception. Due to my constant fear of being judged and wanting to blend in with the crowd, I stopped liking 06, I acted like I hated it, and destroyed my copy of the game, with the same friend I grew up playing it with.
Now that I'm older, I don't care what other people think, I love this game, it tried many new things, it wasn't scared, dare I say, it was ambitious. I get why you wouldn't like this game, it's jank as all hell, and the story is garbage, but this game has a special place in my heart, and I hope people can respect that, just like I respect anyone who doesn't like this game.
Edit: After watching this review, I'm proud. This game has received it's love from die hard fans, but it's now nice to see someone outside of those die hard realize this games potential. Please, go play P-06, it's amazing, I'm so glad Jirard was able to realize what this game could have been. I appreciate this review a lot.

Metro Kingdom isn't another planet... The kingdoms in Mario Odyssey are either on the same planet or on that planet's moon (with Cloud Kingdom being between those two).
The comparison is fair. When I first saw the Metro Kingdom in a trailer, I was concerned that Nintendo might be doing Mario's version on Sonic '06... I was very happy to find that that was not the case.
I see Sonic '06, Metroid: Other M, & Zelda: Skyward Sword as being part a trio of sorts... Games that had high expectations on them & lofty ambitions in well established series', but fell short by a lot for various reasons each. I think this one of the three at least has something good in its core, so I plan on trying Project '06 when it's done.
Skyward sword doesn't deserve to be on that list. It's a finished and quality game, it's main issue is simply it's design philosophy isn't for some people.
@@kirin1230 Other M is just as "finished" as Skyward Sword. The biggest pillar that's at the core of the Zelda series is exploration, and this is the one title in the series that doesn't even have an overworld.
Also, the biggest bug in the game is the fact that you can't move the wiimote into the next starting position for the next sword swing quickly enough without it counting as a sword swing itself, re-randomizing the enemy's positioning, but moving it slowly times out the current position to re-randomize it, so you're best off just waiting until your current wiimote starting position is where the next sword swing needs to be, dragging out the already otherwise boring combat. Given how core they made this mechanic be... That is absolutely not a finished game right there.
I don’t think it’s fair to Other M or Skyward Sword to be put on the same level as 06.

The loading screen joke caught me off guard and destroyed me. Very nice to see a review of this game taking the issues with production into account instead of just mentioning them- and how they affected the team.
Even if the game sucked, I still had fun with Sonic 06. Right now, it's being rejuvenated as a fan game by ChaosX and it kicks ass from what I've seen. If SEGA wants to bring Sonic 06, they should go to ChaosX and his team.
A thing I that I find surprising is despite how I hear SEGA struggled with the PS3 Kit, I played this Sonic the Hedgehog on PS3, which came out one year later, and I didn't get as many bugs as I hear people mention. I tried replicating some of them and it didn't work or I had a minor issue nowhere as big as what I see online. And because I didn't encounter any bug, I greatly enjoyed playing it. I think it show how much one more year of development can do.
I think everyone knows that when we insult this game it isn't an attack on the devs that were forced to work under ridiculous restraints. It's cause the game is bad and it's fun to mock.
Sonic 06 was the last full 3D main series game, and it was the last main series game to feature playable characters that aren't Sonic. What it did well was it's story and characters. Shadow being a Hero, who has gotten over any memory issues from previous games and is now faced with the possibility that the people he works so hard to protect might some day turn on him and worse make his own friend hunt him down. Yet despite that he carries the entire story like a badass. Knuckles is only "Not Smart" as opposed to being "Dumb" which is a much much better fit for the character. Sonic's a genuinely nice person and not the sort of egotistical joker that future games make him out to be. Silver is Trunks, people love Trunks. Lastly Amy is a badass and Sonic know's it, unlike future games that make her a victim for Sonic to rescue (along side all his other friends) this was the last game among the likes of ADX, A2B and Heroes where Sonic is actually kind of scared of Amy, she's got a temper, and the skill to back it up, despite being such a cheerful and obsessive young girl. That moment for both Shadow and Amy where Silver is about to defeat Sonic but they come in, Sonic see's them and knows "These 2 can handle this, I've gotta go get Elise" it feels so good as a fan of these characters to relive when they were like that.
06 Gameplay was unfortunately a 3/10 maybe, and had a ton of potential. However 06 Story was an 8/10 probably, not flawless, but super fucking good.
I personally loved a lot of the bits and humor from the old days of The Completionist, but I'm still happy that Jirard is putting out quality content that people enjoy even if it's different. You do you, man.
Agreed, I really liked those bits and the humor. And I also really liked when Jirard was able to just say that a game was bad. It's gotten a little too... let's say robotic lately, for my taste.

The worst part about Sonic '06 is that there honestly is a good game in there, but, long story short, corporate intervention forced this to be put out before it could have been good. (See quote "A bad game is bad forever, delayed game can be great")
I honestly disagree. The problem with 06 is that, technical stuff aside, it's not really good and, ironically, I think it's more obvious with the p-06 project: sonic's campaign is a nice continuation of his adventure days, but everything else from the forced and repetitive combat sections of shadow, his redundant vehicles, silver campaign that is just "pick stuff, throw stuff", the bad story etc. etc. Prove that 06 didn't have a good design from the start and repeated a lot of hiccups sonic team carried since the adventure titles. I admire and approve p-06, but the stuff they are repairing is not what a lot of people want from a platform based on movement and speed. The whole unfinish aspect of the og release is just the icying on the cake

Jokes aside, you didn't get what I said: people don't want a lot of the design coices of sonic 06, not that they don't want a finished version of the game. If you are making a soeed based platformer, putting a lot of Road blocks like costant enemy rooms that you have to clear, slow vehicles, empty hub worlds and other random BS that don't belong in this type of game and series. I'm not condemming ChaosX, i'm just saying that if the game was finished it couod have been mediocre just like the adventure games

Also the Adventure games are critically acclaimed and considered some of Sonic's best, so idk what you're talking about there.
@@evdestroy5304 they were well received THEN. Now, everyone picked up on their problems and the games aged very badly. And unfortunatly 06 carries a lot of their problems. What i'm trying to say is that it's nice to have a finished version of 06, but that doesn't make it instantly good or a game for everyone, because of it's many design flaws. Is it clear now?

I like your approach to this review. It's always good to look back at something with a fresh pair of eyes and see if your opinion has changed. I still think Sonic 06 sucks, but I will recognize that Sonic Team wanted to make it good. And it sucks that the higher ups and other challenges made that dream turn into a nightmare. To this day, I still hate Silver. I get why he was made, but I hated fighting him as Sonic and Shadow. The amount of times I got cornered, lost every ring, and then immediately getting caught in the next attack before picking up the rings was infuriating. On top of that, the stupid ball section in that one stage, you know the one, was by far the most rage inducing. Still, thanks to you I just downloaded Project 06 and I am excited to play it. Apparently Shadow's episode is now done. Thanks again for an amazing review and here's to another 20 episodes.
Sonic 06 will always have a special place in my heart. When I was like 8 it was the first game we owned on the ps3, and couldn’t figure out how to get to the first world so we just played the multiplayer race mode
Kinda interesting looking back at this game all these years later, especially now with the amazing fan project that is Sonic P-06. Like everyone else, I grew to view this game as just a dark spot in Sonic's history, I could comment on a few things, but would generally accept it as the crappy sonic game to end all crappy Sonic games. But now that I'm older, wiser, and have a way of playing this game in a, dare I say, decent way. I've found a sort of new appreciation for this game.
Don't get me wrong, this game still has its problems and is still a problematic and obviously unfinished game. But I've come to appreciate the view the team had and what they wanted to do. They truly did want to bring Sonic to the next generation in a big way. And you can see that, even in the original version. The music, level design and themes, action set pieces, enemy designs, even the story all have this feeling of grandjure. But because of poor management and circumstances, the team only got to make half the game they wanted to make, with the other half being the game that people like to ridicule.
Sonic 06 is still an unfinished mess, but to say it's all bad and didn't have thought put into it is honestly not true. The team has always put thought into their games, they just get unlucky at times when it comes to time and development. And they got really unlucky with this one. But like many today, if this game had more time in the oven, it honestly could've been one of Sonic's greatest hits.
If people want to see what I'm talking about or get an idea of what a more finished and optimized version of 06 would be like, I highly recommend trying Chaos-X's Sonic P-06 fan game. Basically, the closest thing we have to an official remaster of 06. Heck, the closest thing to feeling like a Sonic Adventure 3 dare I say. Might not entirely change your opinion of 06, but maybe might let you see what Sonic Team wanted to do, and if given more time, could've accomplished. I mean the fact we have a version of 06 that's more playable and less buggy is worth a look alone in my book.
Sonic 06 was being developed during a dark era of SEGA almost ending up in bankrupcy until Sammy (a company from Japan that has nothing to do with game development) adquired them. SEGA of Japan is the problem, the best sonic games made after the Genesis games were made in the USA for the most part.
Back then with the Genesis/Megadrive, there were always management problems between SEGA Japan and North America. The Genesis/Megadrive would't be succesful without SEGA North America.

I am very glad that you retain the thought of "I just put myself out there." It is more exciting at least for me, as a viewer, to see how you perfect THAT alongside the strange and alien pressures including us, the audience. I have been writing music since I was six and could not retain what you are retaining professionally, so I left it. This speaks to the lack of quality I produced under external pressure.
To witness someone navigate the ridiculousness of monetary survival in alternative media spaces in the present is inspiring. That is all I mean to say. It is inspiring to witness what you do man. Cheers!
Honestly, this is weirdly one of my favorite sonic games. I got it when I was 14, was super excited and none of the loading and sluggishness bothered me I guess cause I just love most sonic stuff. I absolutely love project 06 tho. Its what the game felt like to me when i was younger.

I remember when I was a kid we got this game for my younger brother because he really liked playing it with our cousin, glitches and all. Hell, especially because the glitches made the game more fun to play with friends. In the end I guess it ended up finding a place in my heart after all, even if it was for the wrong reasons.

Sonic 06 is the punchline that never truly loses its punch. Since I first saw it, way back when, and even to this day, I still think there's a good game, buried somewhere deep within the train wreck it ended up releasing as. I'm happy that folks are still working to try and make it more playable, so that it can shine the way it never got the chance to, even if it's so many many years after the fact. Even if the script itself is absolute nonsense, especially combined with the voice over and general presentation.
Great work on the episode as always, Jirard. Definitely looking forward to whatever comes next, and on a personal note, I enjoy what the show has become quite a bit. Always be you, good sir.

Hi! Sonic 06 apologist here. Despite being a longtime Sonic fan ever since my mom played Sonic Megacollection+ with me as a kid, I never really got into the 3D world of Sonic until around last year. The only two 3D Sonic titles I was familiar with were Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic Unleashed for the Wii.
What persuaded me to actually pick up Sonic Adventure 2 was actually a combination of Austin dissing it relentlessly on the Normal Boots debate of best GameCube titles and the Snapcube Fandub of SA2, one of my favorite pieces of content to come out of this platform! After that, I watched the 06 fandub and soon after that I witnessed SomeCallMeJohnny tear into the buggy mess. The morbid curiosity drove me to finally dust off my XBOX 360 and purchase the game online (I was surprised I couldn't buy it on the XBOX store until I remembered it had been unlisted lol).
While experiencing it for myself, I saw yet another video from Video Game Apologist, who fantasized about the legendary game 06 could have been if only things hadn't gone south on the development. After hearing some much needed credit to the game's ambition, I actually found myself at a loss. It just got harder to be angry at the glitches, bugs, and *especially* the story because I could finally see the merit in what Sonic Team was going for! No, the game is not "good" by most standards. But I still enjoy playing it for all it's got to show me, warts and all (and I'm not even talking about P06, ChaosX is a god!)
All this to say, thank you Jirard. I really appreciate your take on this beautiful disaster ❤

Good review, but still.. the one thing I cannot get past when it comes to reviewing Sonic games... is that Jirard keeps forgetting that the robot's name is Omega, not Gamma. I get that he's fixated on Sonic Adventure's E-102 Gamma, but still. It's Omega!!
At the end of the day, this is probably the most heartfelt I've ever seen you since first following the show back in 2013. And I understand where you're coming from in terms of changing how the show plays out. To be honest, sketch comedies are funny and all, but I kind of enjoy more down-to-earth reviews of games. And you deliver!
cool to see you do this again from a different perspective and I love that you mentioned project 06 because it proves that this game could have been good if they had given it the time it needed to be a real game instead of an incomplete tech demo and I hope project 06 eventually shows us what this game could actually be I relish the day this game exists in a completed form that we can all enjoy
