  • Well, that didn't go as expected. Trying to sell 4 bikes to The Pros Closet only resulted in 1 of 4 bikes getting sold to TPC. Their customer service chat was amazing, helping me get an even better deal on my Stumpjumper and once I did sell my S-Works Stumpjumper to The Pros Closet the process was super smooth and paid out quickly. I'll certainly be using them in the future to get the market price and possibly trade-in a bike as well.

    Didn’t trade in a bike with them, but bought a rear shock from them and actually spoke with someone that was both helpful and knowledgeable. Seem like a decent company!

    It looks like a cool service. The "store credit" or "trade-in at a participating dealer" tells me they have some type of deal worked out with certain shops to get discounts on the bike you buy. And of course, if it's store credit, then they've already made their made their money. Pretty slick operation, I think. Everybody wins.

    I sold a road bike to them this summer and had a great experience. The funny part was I had it on Facebook too, and in an effort to be transparent, I said in the listing that I was selling to Pros Closet in X days if I couldn’t sell it local. Obviously that was my preference so I wouldn’t have to pack it up and everything. The EXPERTS on Facebook let me have it about how that was a weird flex to say and how I was a jerk for trying to sell it for way more than I could get from them since their offer would be terrible. I eventually posted a screenshot of the offer and they all stopped commenting. I made more from Pros Closet in that instance, but sometimes it might be worth it to take a little less to not deal with all the idiots online?

    Thanks for this. I think the Pro's Closet is a great way for some people to unload a newer bike that is in good condition. I tested them out last year when trying to sell my 2020 Niner RIP 9 RDO 4 star build with updated i9 wheelset and DHX2 coil . It was a $6600 build when new + extras. Bike had no damage or marks on it and was well maintained and super clean. However their offer was lower than I expected. Around $4000, $1200 less than what I sold it for locally. It did take me a couple weeks to sell, but $1200 is a pretty big difference and goes a long way to getting a better kit on my next bike.

      I bought a blemish bike at a great price from a local dealer with a 2mm paint chip. Otherwise perfect brand new condition. Was a $5.5k build. Hadn’t even been ridden. Submitted it to TPC just out of curiosity. They offered $3000 credit or $2600 cash. 👎🏾

    Thanks for showing what it's like on the selling side. I bought a new rear road wheel from them last year for a pretty great deal. They were really helpful and had great customer service. I'm also really interested what they sold the bike for. All my stuff is too old to sell with them, and their sale bikes all seem to be very high end, and thus very expensive. It's really hard to find a good deal on a decent used MTB bike.

    That was interesting. It makes me want to see what they would offer for some of my stuff. I typically just sell locally and don't have a problem with that. However, I will definitely run it through their site before I do next time just to see if they would be offering what I thought I'd get.

    Really appreciate you covering this. I was skeptical too, to the point that I wasn’t going to even explore their offers - but based off your vid I went ahead and sent them pics of my for-sale bike - and I was really surprised by the strength of their offers. I’ve noticed on their site that they ask full retail for a number of their newer-but-used bikes, sometimes even above retail. I don’t know if they’re actually selling them for those numbers … but they must be, right?

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 роки тому

      I bet I will, will report back if that's the case. Even if you do, my understanding is that you can write that down by creating a schedule for the amount you got paid vs. the original price you paid for your bike. Being that it's unlikely that you will get more than you paid originally it wouldn't be taxable. Of course that requires a little extra work as well as a copy of your original receipt but whatever you do consult a tax professional and don't listen to me.
      Second, I don't see a list on their website, but asking at my LBS they do participate the Pro's closet partnership and I suspect most would.

In mint shape. They offered me $800 yet had other used ones listed for full retail price $3,600!! Does that sound fair?? Plus I heard nothing but horror stories from people buying used bikes that were scratched/dented and no where near described condition. Maybe its different regions or resellers. Did you tell them you were a UA-camr with followeres and would do a review before dealing with them? Like everything else folks, do a Google review look up on the company using the word REVIEW at the end. It will give you a very good idea about the company.

      Firstly NO I am not pompous enough to contact TPC and ask them to do anything special. They don't know my channel, or anything aside from the normal process, (A channel as small as mine is virtually inconsequential)
      Coming from working for a company that did vehicle trades, they would often use price as a controller of supply. I.e. they had to many of one model, then they would reduce the trade values. To few of a vehicle they would increase trade values. So if when you looked TPC had a bunch of similar bikes maybe they weren't wanting yours? Or values are adjusted based on time and difficulty selling the bike?
      All I know is 1 of 4 of my bikes were a better deal to trade instead of sell my own. So 25% chance in my small experiment. Getting a quote is a "free" service so why not use it as a benchmark. I know I do when I go to sell my car. I always get a quote from Carvana to know what my base price should be. Then it's up to you to decide what is "fair".

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  2 роки тому

      There is no irony regarding where the bike is. The stigma (well earned) is due to the lack of QC and post sale support. Sure brand XYZ has their bike made overseas, but most of them have QC staff living and working in the country. Then when it gets to the end user there is a company to spare parts, warranty the product, and most of all care that their name doesn't get tarnished. Country of origin does not always indicate quality. But lack of responsibility certainty does. I'd much prefer to pay a few dollars more to get a bike from a company who knows they are responsible for the rider's safety.

    Pros Closet low balls big time. I’ve priced two bikes with them. They had one similar to mine, one year older, and in worse condition, for sale on their site for over 40% more than what they offered me for mine. • @Jamesthebikeguy

      To be fair they do have to sell the bike for more than what they paid for it. And depending on the price of the bike 40% is a fairly reasonable difference. Of course you will often be able to sell your bike for more individually, but thats not really what they are offering. Its a easy, clean & fast way to sell a bike. Not to maximize the amount you get. Just like in this video only 1 of the 4 got sold to TPC as the others I thought I could do better on my own.

    So I’m back to say they are absolutely lowballing me. I have spotless 2021 epic evo expert with less than 40 mi and their offer was absolutely disrespectful lol. The store credit was almost 2k less than what I can gather anywhere else. Then for fun, I submitted just the frame and I just laughed. So 60% less than the current value in cash for the whole bike and about 35% of the frame value. So then I went to look at their pricing on bikes. Interesting how all of a sudden they know the value of bikes! A 2019 Stumpjumper with a LOT of visible blemishes with a fox 36 elite fork and coil is 6599!!!! Go look for yourselves.
    I wouldn’t buy an accessory from there even if nobody else had one. I spoke to someone on pink bike that said he got 3200 for a 2018 Scott spark in cash lol. My offer was 3600. That’s the last time I will even give them a hit to their site. Garbage. Lol

      You do know they can't buy your used bike for the same price as a new bike, right? You also understand that you can sell your bike yourself for more than you'll get a trade in price, right? It's unreasonable to believe that a company that makes money on buying a bike at a low price but easy, and then sells for a high price but easy. Will do anything but give you a lower price than you could otherwise get, but you don't have to do any work.
