In this video, I'll talk about 5 pennies that were supposed to have been minted on zinc planchets but have been found minted on copper planchets. Be sure to weigh these pennies and Happy Hunting!
After watching a few of your penny hunt videos I had to check my copper penny collection.. I have sorted through about $20 of the coppers and found 8 1982 small date Philly's (no mint mark) copper and about 50 of the 1982 Denver mint coppers. Unfortunately I did not find any 1982 Small date Denver's. I never check for DDO or error coins in any zinc coins, I just wrap them all back up and take them back to the bank. A few years ago I remember finding LOADS of 2009's I thought they looked cool, but They also went back to the bank. never checked them for errors or anything.
Thanks for the video, Rob. I knew about the 82-D SM DT and the 83's but I did not know about the 89-D and 90-D. The Red Book is a little confusing when it comes to mintages for all 1982's combined. As far as I can tell, they minted almost 17 billion pennies in 1982, all small and large P&D. Would you concur with that? I know hardly a roll passes through my hands that I don't find a 1982...lol BTW...I found a 1998 WAM the other day. I'm going through $25 worth of customer wrapped rolls this morning, it's all I could find today. I just had two of the best boxes I've had in a while. Got almost a whole tube of wheat cents mostly 40's and 50's but I did find a 1928 and a 1907 Indian Head along with a 1952-2002 Canadian and four 1974-S's.
I am new to this coin collecting Oddly enough I've never liked any sports or really any major thing that most people like as hobbies I'm just mainly work It's at all possible would you please send me the list of stuff you searching for. I'll label together a lot of letters don't have time to watch UA-cam constantly
Hey Rob! First I want to say thank you for all the content you have done. You’re one of a small few who recently got me into this and it’s been a blast! I have found a 1979 D that weighs 2.4? Wanted to get your take on it. Seems like you’ve got a ton of knowledge on this
I had a hard time seeing the difference in those dates on those four coins, other than the fact that the ones on the right we’re a little bit thicker. Both seem to have the same curves. The difference could be just in the press itself. How much do the pennies with later dates, on copper planchettes, sell for? That would’ve been interesting to know, and is it really worth your time and trouble?
I have a 1982 beat up pretty bad it's a small date with no mint mark weighs 3.08 Is it anything worthwhile. Love the site informative and to the point Thanks Gary Youngstown Ohio
I also might have a 1 small date 1982 penny on copper and 2 of the large date ones all on copper. Are the 1982 large date worth alot also if there on copper as well
a lot faster and more accurate way to separate your copper and zinc pennies is to use a magnetic coin sorter. A simple aluminum slide with a magnet towards the end will slow a copper penny down enough to alter it's trajectory when falling off the end of an aluminum ramp (2 pieces of aluminum angle stock clamped together) The Zinc penny will fall in a straight(er) line, while the copper penny will slow down enough to drop earlier after it exits the ramp. Simply place two glass jars one in front of the other and the zinc pennies will fall into the jar furthest away from the end of the ramp while the copper ones will slow down and drop straight down. a little tweaking with angle and the strength of the magnets being used will insure 100% accuracy when sorting bulk coins. AND you don't even have to flip them over and look at each of the dates!
I have a 1983 1992 I got all kinds of weighs 3.10 1982 that weighs 312 I have another 1982 that weighs 312 are these good coins are they worth money and they got big dates
Well, I found an 82 D in my father's collection. Now I know why. It weighs 3 grams and a small mint from what I can see but it bright and not dark. Does that make a difference when it comes to color?
I didn't know about the 89D and 90D to look for copper, but you forgot 82 philly small date, should be zinc, but some were found in copper and also are big bucks.
True - I didn't mention that particular cent. I know about it but here's my thoughts. UNLESS, it is found in MS65 or better, it is not even worth grading. Valued under $30. That being said, we should still look for it. Unfortunately, the 1982 Penny without a mint mark could have been struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco or West Point since none of those mints put mint marks on the coins that year... I was focusing mainly on pennies that would fetch a BIG price. Either way, I probably should have spoke about it in the video - great reminder and great catch!
I found a 1982 P small date that's copper. I even weighed it. I always thought large date P, large date D, and small date P were copper or zinc while small date D was supposed to be zinc but there are copper errors. I never actually knew small date Ps were supposed to be all zinc. so my copper 1982 P small date is an error coin? or is it not?
I had recently got a roll of pennies from work and open them up and they're all copper 1982 Lincoln small dates large dates evolve variety but all copper and all from 82 who do I contact to try to sell them? And and have them appraised some of them look uncirculated
What about under weight coins. I have a 1987 d, that weighs 2.38 grams. Hasn't been sanded or anything, all details are on the coin. What do you think this is?
I have a question for you Rob at Rob finds treasures I have found several of the 1982p small date Penny's that weigh 3.1 grams but they are p munt mark, are they worth anything. would appreciate it if you would respond to my question, thank you and have a great day
There are 1982 small dates without mint mark weighing 3.1g. However, unless it is found in MS65 or better, it is not even worth grading. Valued under $30. That being said, we should still look for it. Unfortunately, the 1982 Penny without a mint mark could have been struck at Philadelphia, San Francisco or West Point since none of those mints put mint marks on the coins that year... If you have an awesome coin that is a 1982 Small Date weighing 3.1g, get it looked at for sure.
wait.... San Fransisco minted pennies for circulation after 1974? I always thought that after 1974 San Fransisco only did proofs. Did they just remove the S? interesting. I never knew that.
Rob, what about in the other direction? That is are there any cents meant to be copper, but stamped on zinc planchets? For example, are there any 82 large dates (P or D), or other dates, meant to be copper, come from zinc planchets? Any errors or varieties to look for on San Fran (I guess proof) cents?
well 1982 large date Ps and Ds were minted on copper planchets early in the year and zinc planchets later in the year. Don't know about 1982 P small dates. 1982 D small dates are supposed to be all zinc but some copper coins were made anyways.
I have a question about my 1983D and 1983P I have 4 of them that are all on copper 2 of each what's the value for that year for that penny please help thank you
I have some questions on this. I have small dates 1982 no D mark. That weight 2.5 and 3.1. I have small date 1982 that weight 2.5 and small date that wright 3.1. I also have small date that weight 2.5 and large date thay wright 3.1. Im confused if just the D have value or am i lost? Thanks
Hello I have a 1982 I have probably 10 or 12 of them they're all either Denver marked or they have no mint mark at all it's just hard for me to make out the two but I do have a lot of them and they all weigh 3.1 to 3.2 g
Rob hi I have a 83 penny that weighs 27 grams some say that it's nothing special but could it be possible that it may have been at the end of the copper error run ? How many 27 gramshave you noticed in weighing pennies I weigh alot and only found 1 please let me know what you think thanks
I have over 1 thousand Penny's from each year from 1961 to 2006 and I've found so many errors took so long but definitely worth the money by a thousand I mean there all and I mean all are errored coins from each of there years
I just found a 1969 d penny that weighs 3.1 I found 1980 penny that weighed 3.1 I found two 1982 by 3.1 in the 1982 it was 3.1. where can I sell these babies?
In this video, I'll talk about 5 pennies that were supposed to have been minted on zinc planchets but have been found minted on copper planchets. Be sure to weigh these pennies and Happy Hunting!
RobFindsTreasure I think you should do a dime hunt whenever you can
I have £19 now
Is a 1982 small date no mint mark on a 3.1copper worth anything
Hey Rob, Should 1982 pennies with no mint mark weigh 3.11 or 2.5 grams? I have both weights. Which weight is most valuable? Thanks for the reply.
instaBlaster.
I'm always about learning more about coins so I really enjoy videos like this one the more info the better
I never heard of the 89-D & 90-D .Thank you .
Also on the 82 sm or large date I find it easier to look at the top of the 8. It's smaller on small date than the 8 on the large date.
Precisely simpler.
Thanks for the great info. I knew about the 82 & 83 pennies but not others.
I think this is an awesome addition to the penny hunts! Love it!

THANX FOR DOING THIS VIDEO ~ THIS WHOLE WEIGHIN SPECIFIC COINS IS CONFUSING
Thanks for your great explanation on every video. The knowledge I gain from these videos you do is worth a pretty penny.
Thanks for the video, Rob. I knew about the 82-D SM DT and the 83's but I did not know about the 89-D and 90-D. The Red Book is a little confusing when it comes to mintages for all 1982's combined. Very useful information. I'm adding these to my search list. Thanks, Rob!

Also the 2009 satin copper coins. They aren't worth a ton, but still would be great to find in circulation.
Agreed Dom - I have hundreds to weigh up eventually!
Hey Rob! First I want to say thank you for all the content you have done. You’re one of a small few who recently got me into this and it’s been a blast!

There are 1982 small dates without mint mark weighing 3.1g. However, unless it is found in MS65 or better, it is not even worth grading. Valued under $30. I have a question about my 1983D and 1983P I have 4 of them that are all on copper 2 of each what's the value for that year for that penny please help thank you
Just a curious question so if they weigh more than 2.5 or less are they worth more are they worth less are they equal value
They’d have to be significantly different in weight. There can be a variance as allowed by the Mint, but no modern cents should weigh north if 2.7g
I just found a 1982D Lincoln penny that weighs 3.1 g small date
Need some information. I found a 1982 small date on copper planchet. But its from Philly mint. Is it worth anything?

I found a 1980 that weighs 2.7 grams,it appears there may be some 1980 coins that are zink.
I have four of the 1982 Denver
Why are they saying that the 1970 D weighs 2.5 coin tracker has it listed as 2.5
So in 1982 they minted BOTH copper & zinc? The small date should be zinc and the large date copper?
Copper and zinc varieties are for all type except 1982-D small date - only zinc. If you find one of copper - BOOM!

Has to be small date with a Denver mint mark and made of cooper to have value.
On my 1982 D the D is hard to read I don't know if it's a small date or large date but could it be worth anything if the D is barely visible
COPPER small date Denver only.
I have over 1 thousand Penny's from each year from 1961 to 2006 and I've found so many errors took so long but definitely worth the money by a thousand I mean there all and I mean all are errored coins from each of there years
1985 p and d coppers have also surfaced. I would weigh all 1980ies pennies after 1982. Obviously the 82 d small date copper is the coup de gras.
