There’s also a shield-poke moveset, light attack while blocking yknow… I don’t think you mentioned it Well after watching the vid a bit longer, I saw you using it but you def didn’t talk about it
Important to mention that Carian Thrusting Shield gets an A scaling in Strength with Heavy affinity, so you can absolutely go full Strength with it and have good damage
worth mentioning that although the Heavy Dueling Shield has a B scaling, at same strength values it still has slightly more physical piercing damage than the Heavy Carian Thrusting Shield.
This is unironically my favorite weapon class in the DLC. Getting guard points during attacks is such a fun thing and something ive been missing since DS3s Valorheart. One of my favorite dumb setups was offhand Great Katana and main hand shield. You get an L1 to R1 true combo and main hand guard points. On top of that, the big wide swipes of the katana synergizing really well with the shorter pokes of the thrusting shield.
@@Jblank1016 I was just thinking about that the other day while farming for the greatsword, fun fact the Fire Knight Greatsword is one of few weapons that actually works with Ghostflame Call (still way less damage than the Poker) running cold infusion
A magic carian thrusting shield pairs well with the carian thrusting sword. You can buff it with scholar’s shield, and it will eliminate the stamina issues
You can't make it magic affinity, as you won't be able to use that buff, but if you do heavy quality keen or even standard you'll be good to do that combo
@SyrenKindra really? I assumed it was like weapon buffs where they couldn't be elemental infused or it wouldn't work. But I guess that only applies to damage, and shield grease doesn't buff damage, so it checks out
I quite like these shields. Pretty effective as weapons with good damage, decent ash selection, and a cool gimmick. I'm sure many people know this already but I'll explain it anyway. These shields have block-frames on all attacks the light attacks block after each strike and the heavies block before the strike. On the lights your character will stand there holding the shield out for a moment before returning to neutral, meaning if you un-wire that R1 spam muscle memory most of us have. You can hit an enemy/boss during their wind-up, then pause briefly to block the attack, then continue your combo. You can basically brute force attack openings that aren't supposed to be there with these just remember to manage your stamina and that you will always take chip damage so pay attention. It takes a whole different mindset to take advantage of this gimmick effectively, but if you do, you can really screw with people and/or fight the PvE in a new unique way. What do other people think about these?
I picked it up & went "oh, it has Guard Point"- but after a minute I realized that only makes sense if you have terminal Charge Blade brainrot from far too many hours of Monster Hunter.
The Thrusting Shields are super awesome. The Carian Thrusting Shield was basically my go-to for the rest of the DLC after I snagged it. The moveset is super nice and smooth, and any attack that has you holding the shield out in front of you actually counts as blocking! This means you can do some REALLY cool stuff by somewhat delaying your combo attacks to basically block hits between your own counterattacks, making it a PERFECT weapon for the Spear Talisman, and just an overall great tool once you learn those guard-points and can catch hits while keeping up the pressure.
For the record, the Dueling Shield is a real historical weapon. It was made for judicial duels in Germany and it is meant to be difficult to use to even the odds between two mismatched opponents. I put Giant Hunt on mine. I was using Light Greatsword in the main hand so having a big heavy and defensive weapon with the dick kick AoW was great. Duelling Shield forever!
The best counter I've found to the thrusting shield with my UGS is Royal Knight's Resolve. However you hit them it will guard break them. I was really excited about the duelling shields but it feels scummy to use them with how opressive they can be.
I’ve been waiting for this!!! I’ve also been experimenting with the dueling shields a lot and the blocking attacks are really fun to fight other players with. Been using poison affinity, mainly because Kindred of Rot exultation is fun, and it procs in like 2 or 3 hits at 60 arcane (if you don’t feel like using the perfume bottle at the start of the fight)
Carian Sorcery Sword since it doubles as a catalyst. Great for Spellblades as you can use Carian Slicer for more traditional sword slashes and the regular thrusting moveset for well thrust attacks, so you essentially keep a full sword moveset despite the loss of a traditional heavy attack.
Great epee gets C scaling in dex, int, and str if you cold infuse it, spiked spear is also pretty good if you want pure strength scale and a sweeping R2 instead of the mega stab the spears get normally. Also has innate bleed which is always nice
The chilling mist ash makes you swing the shield in a horizontal slash with more range than normal attacks. It's a weird interaction that is strong for roll-catching.
I always bring a thrusting shield when exploring an unknown area. Keeps me safe for unexpected ambushes and can attack and defend at the same time with heavy hitters
I like running the basic version with the wooden great shield in my off hand for the looks. The metals are slightly different but otherwise they are basically a match set. Plus it's stat accessible. Tbh other great shields would be better for it and can look good two, lyndell Knight shield and the haligtree shield both can work well to.
I did not know that you could still block while doing the heavy attacks. That's cool.

really sad they didn't bother fleshing out any of the new weapon classes. you typically get one standard and one somber and that's it. we got more weapons for the preexisting classes than anything. disappointing.
I know it's a meme that there's so little of the new weapon types but I'm just stoked to see where fromsoft goes with them if they decide to put them in their next title Like I wonder what kind of a trick weapon a thrusting shield could be the base of
I do think we could've gotten a couple more throwing dagger weapons though, like how the smithscript daggers went in a straight line, we could've had one that went in a curved motion, and another that hung in the air for a second before flying at the enemy like the smithscript shield
I have some questions regarding the shield grease, differences between both grease and not grease, and also if the GS talisman and pearlshield do make a difference on these or no
FS really cut short this dlc by not adding more variants of thrusting shields nor their heavy versions. We are yet not really for that era...we need to block more to handle such power.
Did you try the guard counter with the shields? I haven't picked up the dlc yet but my latest playthrough has been a knight style and I"ve been using guard counters a lot. I wanted to try them with the thrusting shields once I got my hands on them.
Just bought this game and the dlc but haven't started it because I can't decide what build I want to do since this is my first fromsoft game. How do yall decide on what build yall want to run?
I find that an even strength and dexerity build is best for a first-time playthrough in any of these games. What they lack in damage, they make up in versatility, allowing you to check out, experiment, and make good use of most weapons you will come across. As powerful as spells are, they can be fickle as it is easy to not find "that one spell" that is going to help you with "that one part" that you're stuck on. I prefer to save wizards for a second playthrough.
Bait maybe? But thrusting shields are just like small, medium, and great shields. R1 and R2 strike with the right hand shield, L1 blocks with the left hand shield, L2 uses whichever shield has the higher priority ash of war.
Was psyched to watch the video and goes right into the sponsor than immediately after leaves the video for a stupid advertisement and I don't have the patience to wait and never see the video at all🤬😭🤬 What's more ridiculous than thrusting shields...
