Okay kidz welcome to monstah huntah 101. The first thing you wanna do is check ya supply bax.
Harley Quinn plays monster hunter
TheNotoriousGuy lmao 😂
😂
I remember using this video when I was helping a friend do this fight. Overall, very well done, but I wanted to mention one mechanic you might have overlooked. Even if you don't want to use a weapon, it would let you basically restock all the ammo and the ballistas for free.
If anyone is watching this 18 months later, I just wanted to add something that can help you do a lot more free damage. I didn't see it mentioned in the comments already, so I'll mention it here.
First, I want to say this: Gajin, you used the dragonator well, but you were SLIGHTLY too early. Only a couple of seconds too. Let me explain.
If you use the dragonator a bit too early, he will flinch and go back on all fours again, and repeat the cycle.
However, if you wait for Lao Shan Lung to put TWO HANDS on the fortress, you get a full on knockdown. I'm talking about a full on 30 seconds of Lao doing nothing (slightly longer, but not really counting the time where he starts recovering and then starts stepping backwards to repeat his cycle) . His head even conveniently lands basically right next to the dragonator button (kinda behind it) so you can wail on it for free damage.
In the video, you were maybe, 2 or 3 seconds too early for that to happen, (in the dragonator shot around 21:33, you can see him start to raise his other hand, but the animation was interrupted by the dragonator). I don't have a good video to show it of my own to show it.
Him putting both hands on the fortress does zero damage, btw. But he will attack shortly afterwards...I think. It's been so long since I actually let him get another attack off after that. (Edit: Okay, found a video where it happens. He will head slam after like 3 seconds which will basically one shot you if you wait too long. Forgive me for posting another UA-camr's video here, but it was super clean demonstration of what I'm talking about. ua-cam.com/video/nAXCL5he4WI/v-deo.html Video is CantePerMe's. Also a good example of hitting the button slightly too late haha)
Anyway, hope this helps any random future hunter who sees this message!
Happy Hunting!
im seeing this after 2 years
Im about to attempt this for the first time thanks!
TL;DR: Hit the Dragonator when Lao puts both hands on the fortress, then attack his head.
i did lao like 15 times and he putted his hand on the fortress once so its kinda rare to happen

You kids today don't understand what suffering is.
Back in my day, we had to carry 1 cannonball at a time with no Pro-Transporter, uphill both ways in the driving snow while a squad of Ioprey spat on you.
Also back in my day, everyone just jumped off the fortress and stabbed Lao in the gut.
We used the right joystick for our attacks and we LIKED IT!

But seriously I enjoyed the video nice work man.
Pro Transporter is an underrated skill though, such a great utility skill especially for carrying large objects.
Capcom, please nerf, pro transporter too op
@@gargontar It might have potential for a Lao Shan and has been proven effective for a heavy item delivering Quest, but otherwise there's no use from that skill. That is why it's so underrated...

I'd rather see imperfect run because if I watch the perfect run, I'd bail the first time I make mistake and that'll frustrate me more.
I remember the cannon for Lao in mhfu was an absolute joke. You had to transport 1 cannon from the base camp to the fortress but there was an area between you had to walk through with a buttload of ioprey that don't stop spawning. So you have to have insane jukes. And this is all for 1 freaking cannon ball that you could probably out damage with your weapon in a fraction of the time.
They actually stop spawning after u kill 30 of them
i remember fighting that thing in FU dam was it a beach to fight but at the same time amazing
If I remember correctly you had to dodge the remobras spawning right? HAHAHAHAHA
@@Vairy_2972 Shen gaoren was way harder.
That sounds like absolute HELL
If anyone is still watching, you can get away with using Alchemy style to make earplugs as the fight goes on as opposed to using armor with earplugs - it makes making a set so much easier. I used the Guardian U set with decorations to get the Pro Transporter ability, and then just made earplugs as I needed during the hunt.

Gonna need some salve for those 3rd Degreeeee buuuurrrnnns!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
(I never mind fighting these HP tanks it’s just a break from the dodge roll fest of the rest of the game, but still BUUUUUUURRRRNNNNss!!!)
While I agree that it is the most boring monster to fight in the game, back when I was climbing through g rank I found a hall where people were just farming it. Turned out pretty well, and netted me plenty of pieces for the armor. Just one of those things you want to be patient with really.
Dallas Johnson dis boy gets it ☝️
I'd join online for it. With a competent group it sounds like a nice chill hunt. I'm not that far in the game yet tho.
Its boring because you don't understand how to properly fight it. It feels good when all 4 players use cannon balls and line of the cannon well.
Came here to thank you, 2 years later this video is still super usefull, it took me a couple of tries but managed to beat it with your strategy, i took the seregios great sword and valor style to sneak in some hits just to be sure and made it with 1 and a half minutes left c:
First off I want to thank you Gaijin for this video. As someone who has been soloing through all the hub quests and had just reached G2, you uploaded this at the perfect time. I'm happy to say that on my third attempt I was finally able to do it!
I used the G rank Rhenoplos set and filled it with transporter decorations. This meant I didn't have earplugs which lost me 1 or 2 cannonballs each run.
The first 2 times I executed it flawlessly yet at the last area Lao simply refused to stand up and just destroyed the base while on the ground. The third run I messed up a LOT, wasted a binder by mistake, and completely missed my ground bombs because Lao decided to get up at that moment. I somehow ran through all the cannonballs and ballista in every area and base, which means I ended it by going toe to toe against Lao in the last 5 minutes. Finished in 33 and I don't think I've been this excited to beat a monster in a long time.
Congrats!!!
if you break claws on its forelegs can you gain lao shan megaclaws after a successful repel?
Just some thing you missed there Gaijin:
If you wait with the Dragonator and allow Lao to lay down on the Stronghold, the blow you'll deal to him then with the Dragonator stuns him, letting him lay down his head upon the wall and seeing stars for quite some time. You can use this to load the cannon up and/or use your weapon to give him some pokes. But it kinda looks like the ballistas are out of reach then, so think twice of it.
More importantly, when he slumps over on the wall, he opens his mouth and reveals another hitzone - his uvula. And it's a very, VERY squishy hitzone - 80 to all raw types, and 40 to dragon, so if you're actually using your weapon, it's a great chance to rack up some serious damage.
Just finished my urgent a few minutes ago on my third attempt and I can cannot thank you enough (and Alvis for his handy mixed set). I had been slowly soloing my way through the hub and was kinda scared I was gonna get hard-walled by Lao. So thanks for helping me move through this game I've been enjoying so much.
I keep doing minor mistakes lol
@@manikaditha6308 Hey if you need help I'm down. With you on the cannons and me on the ground it should be easy enough.
@@broadvalley6494 It's been a year but I'm requesting backup if possible lmao
Just tried this method for the first time tonight, got the kill and it worked almost flawlessly.
Lao knocked the first barricade down to 60% and the second down to 30%. Snagged the kill with a minute and a half to spare.
Armor included all the recommended skills, including a meal that granted felyne bombardier.
Lao WILL react differently in your run than in Gaijin's but this had little impact on my run.
I ultimately ran out of cannonballs, binders, and ballista (including the ones at the camp) and had to start wailing on his stomach (weapon was a lvl3 Deus Obelisk for the 3 slots it granted).
Adhere to the recommended skills, upgrade your gear to +400 defense for a little cushioning, bring dash juice(x5), land your shots, and stay diligent and victory will be yours!
Special thanks to Gaijin for the solid information, I'm a longtime solo hunter and this was just the kinda guide I was looking for. Shoutout to every hunter around the world as well, I love this series and its community more than any other!

Oh man GaijinHunter, you are a life saver for solo-ing Lao! I just killed him this morning(9/15) and I was so happy I just threw my hands up in the air in excitement!
I've had to watch your video a few times over and then several times more while following along in quest, and it took me several tries to get it right (3 tries total and one success).
I ran out of ballistae ammo/cannon balls right at the very end and had nothing else to throw at Lao but myself, so I did. I run charge blade in gen ult. And got off a SAED on his back legs and that was all it took to take him out!
Sorry for the super long comment, I don't typically comment on anything here on UA-cam but I really felt the need to share. but also to thank you for all of the helpful monster Hunter content you've made over the years! :D
This made me very happy to read! Congrats ^^
Dude I love your videos, they are the best mh informative videos I've seen!
Just unlocked this urgent. Thanks for all the help since 4U.
*warning* *warning* *unpopular oppinion alert!* i like the seige monsters (except zorah magdaros) because it feels to me that you are fighting a force and that you must use anything at your disposal to stop it and i like the creativity of some of the seige weapons sure the fights could've used a bit more of "the monster acctually noticing you" but i still find the fights enjoyable
That doesnt mean i dont like normal fights a bit better tho
I like siege monsters ( except for Kulve because multiplayer) cause the fights feel like a large scale attack and you need to do everything to stop them it’s great
Same man, my all time favorite quest was the gogmazios one in MH4U. I'd join every gogma quest I could find online cause it was so so fun for me

Damnit, Larn!
Larn, what a legendary name!
I did it!! Had a couple practice runs to get a feel for the map and cannon shots, and I got him on my first real attempt. This absolutely still works.
To anyone new trying this, definitely take high grade ear plugs and transporter pro. Ginormous help.
I didn't manage to kill him, but I missed some key things due to scrambling around. If you miss/run out of cannons or ballista in area two, jump down and focus your attack on a leg. With enough give, it should stagger him. I did this with the charge blade, but I imagine something like the bowguns would also benefit from artillery up.
Thanks, just solo'd him. Around the 1 minute mark I knew I wouldn't get another chance for a cannon cycle so I jumped down and started wailing on his foot. It was just enough and he died with just 13 seconds left on the clock.
Awesome vid,
Helped me kill my first lao shan.
Although would like to say to whoever sees this,
Use a gunlance, preferably with wide shot.
As there are time(like when lao’s side bashing ballista towers) where you can sneak in a wyvern’s fire to bolster dmg.
I use a fully upgraded version of refurbished worn gunlance(dues obelisk)
This video will be so help for years to come
@gaijinhunter
I DID IT!!!! I kid you not, it was 9th attempt after 8 failures. I farmed Valstrax to upgrade his bow to lvl3 and then whacked Lao anytime I could between canon shots. Killed him with 1:10 left!!! Such a relief after long period of frustration. Thank you @gaijin hunter for the video. It helped a lot as a way to understand the basics of the fight. 👍
Thx man.. after 3rd time trying finally I could complete the quest...
I personally love siege battles. When proof of a hero starts playing I shed a tear or two :).
Neat, I'll keep this in mind for when I need to solo him
thanks for the guide. it took me a few tries but i finally downed him and unlocked G3 :)
Tip; staggering him while he winds up to smash the ballista will cancel the animation and keep him moving. It's a risky strategy, but if you can pull it off very easily via ballista binders if you have them available.
I am currently at this point in the game. This is the Build (for melee weapons) i used to get Artillery Expert , Pro Transporter and Earplugs(High) if somebody still needs one:
Weapon without slot
Rhenoplos Helm X
Najarala Mail X
Tigrex Braces S
High Metal Tassets X
Giaprey Greaves X
Charm with 8 points for pro transporter.
4 Artillery Jewels (1 slot)
1 Transporter jewel (1slot)
3 Earplugs Jewels (1slot)
It's fine if you don't have this charm, then Weapon and charm just need to have a total of 4 slots for 4 Transporter Jewels.

Great video! Thanks for showing how to use the anti-dragon bombs. I had no clue how to use them and thought you had to mount Lao the same way you do other monsters (via jump attack) and then use them. I am curious if you could set other barrels while on Lao's back before setting the anti-dragon bombs, but probably not. I've failed about 2 or 3 times so far, and was wailing on his feet with a hammer but to no avail (although I did stun him a few times). I've been grabbing the ballistae shots from the box at the start and didn't think to loot shots from the starting room's looting points. Hopefully all this information will help me do the quest now. Thanks again!
*ALERT: THIS VIDEO IS OUTDATED. AN UPDATE NEARLY DOUBLED LAO'S HEALTH.*
This video still has useful information, but you're probably not going to be able to do what was shown here anymore. It is however still possible to solo kill it without needing gear from after clearing the quest. I managed to do it with High-Rank Alatreon gear.
Specifically, Alatreon Commandment (Ala Bow Lv3) and full HR Escadora armor Lv6, using Adept mode so I could keep shooting the belly and not have to worry about getting two-shot by the body slam, and Triple Volley II because I figured that _might_ be better for pure damage than Haste Rain which is more the kind of HA I prefer in general. Incidentally, I did lots of prep in terms of grinding for items and gear, because I made the Alatreon Bow on recommendation purely for this fight and had to get Gunner armor from scratch because MH ranged weapons aren't my thing; but I did zero number crunching to pull this off. I figured I was either woefully under-prepared or slightly over-prepared with items and training up two bomb Palicos to a decent level (abt 30 when their max is 50) but I just managed to do it. I ate for Attack Up L and Felyne Combiner so I could get a few more arrow coatings.
I saved all my arrow coatings, and most other consumables I used for area two; because Lao can't lose more than half its health in the first area I figured it's better that the first part of the fight goes slower so that just in case I didn't output enough damage to kill it, I'd be more likely to get a repel instead. I did however use Dash Juice in the first area (I brought regular and Mega so I didn't have to stop and combine more) and drank Mega Demondrug and Mega Armorskin. I missed the first use of the restraint but still landed a hit with the Demolisher, and when the restraint became ready again I used that and got a second Demolisher hit. Aside from that, the first area was mostly just dry-shooting the belly as much as possible.
When I got the notification to follow Lao to the second area I took the opportunity to set up the EZ Large Barrel Bombs from the supply chest (I didn't bring my own bombs) and load and position Area 2's cannon. I used the first ballista in the path (the one Lao destroys first) to deal some heavy damage right away, not because I knew whether that would be better or worse than weapon attacks but because I didn't know and just figured it's probably worth using considering how much time you lose to gathering if you use more than the twenty in the supply box. After unloading what I had on me I went to shoot it with my bow because I missed the bombs with the ballista. Kept shooting Lao until it destroyed the ballista, then ran up the ladder to gather more spears and get in position to jump on its back to use the Anti-Dragon Bombs - again, I don't know if waiting as long as I did on the bridge would have been better or worse than just continuing to shoot, I was just hedging my bets.
The next ten-ish minutes are kind of a blur (I'm writing a few hours after doing this) but I know that I managed to use the cannon on Lao on two occasions from both positions for a total of 4 (or 12 depending on how you count it) shots that got a stagger or two, hit it with the Dragonator though not with optimal timing, used both the One-Shot Binders to interrupt some attacks, got KO'd by a body slam, ended up shooting a total of 29 Ballista spears (including those mentioned earlier, though some missed) and burning through all my arrow coatings including the items I brought to make more, and most of the Might Pills.
I kept checking the Quest Info when I thought I could spare a couple seconds, and realized that I was going to win when I saw that I had around 2:45 remaining time and 40% or 50% fort integrity. Lao started hitting the fort before the ten minute mark and hit it to 50% somewhere around the five minute mark, probably after. So I was getting pretty good staggers, but also Lao had wasted a solid minute doing three or four consecutive body slams at me, all of which because I used Adept style just gave me a chance to get off some quick max level shots. At this point I took another Might Pill and burnt the rest of my Coatings, then kept shooting dry arrows until I killed it with 18 seconds to spare.
That was a handful. I'm actually kinda high with relief, and tired. I think I'll take a break from Monster Hunter for a day or two, maybe even take a break from video games in general, or at least a break from that character in this game.
huh that's why my attempt didn't work and I used a very low dmg weapon😅
The theory that an update has doubled lao's health has been debunked actually. Gaijin's technically not wrong when he says Lao's base hp is 25k as 25k is Lao's base hp. But that's before factoring in the 1.9x health modifiers.
The Lao we see Gaijin fight in the video is at the same hp as the anyone else would fight.
I didn’t even know that there were cannonballs in the starting area.
I wish I had tried this sooner since it seems like a good and consistent way to slay the giant Dragon. Oh well, today I finally managed to do that in the standard way using the Magnastar Yuj (Valstrax) Long Sword and Dragon Attack +2, which also worked quite well! I still will try this out too, in a future attempt.
thank you gaijin, my buddy and i handily took out both our urgents today. with over 90% base integrity. no problem

I don't get it. I followed your guide and didn't mess up the few areas you did. I had all the right skills and yet I ended up out of items and fighting him on foot and the fortress being destroyed. The only thing that may be a factor is you talk about his hp being 25,000 around 5:23. According to Kiranico his hp is 47,500. If there is that big of a difference between the Japanese version and US version that would explain why I still failed after following this perfectly. That much hp...I don't think it's possible to solo that working with the limited resources you have from G2 quests.
I just did the G3 urgent solo today in GU following this guide. I only have artillery expert, missed some cannon balls, and didn't kill Lao too in the end so I'm not sure if what you said is the case. But I did manage to withstand until the time runs out and Lao retreats, without using weapons. So you should be able to as well. You see the Lao fight is actually a damage test, you're supposed to deal enough damage before his every attack move, make him flinch and stop attacking the fortress, buying some more time. The reason your fortress got destroyed is because you didn't make him flinch at the right time.
@@kruth6663 I did manage to take him down eventually but it was deviating from this guide since I mainly went with my normal offensive gear. I actually let him attack the wall in the first area a little bit to waste time before I did more stuns to make him move on. Also, there is an additional Binder in the first area that Gaijin didn't mention that really bought me a few extra seconds. As for the final area basically I ended up doing what I could with seige weapons and then just went ballistic on his foot with my Switchaxe and that ended up being enough to win. Pretty sure I was about 2 hits from fortress defeat but the extra time I bought earlier was enough.
@@pcdeltalink036 That's good to hear. Note that you can also save the breakable body parts for stopping his attack, if necessary. The traditional way of the Lao fight was to attack him mainly with normal gears, like a damage test on a sandbag, that's why some players complain about it being boring. Personally I'd still prefer fight with normal gears when I get a better gear set. I believe with optimal gears you'll deal more damage than with siege weapons.
@@kruth6663 where in area 1 is this third binder?
@@zerotwo3298 It's been a while, sorry I don't remember the details. All I can recall is the binder at the end of area 1, besides the massive cannon, where he stops to attack the wall before leaving the area.
Thx for the upload man, but I keep trying this with just HG earplugs and Artillery Expert and it’s too much. Lacking one thing is fine, but lucking both tremor resistance and pro transporter makes cannonballs way less viable
good to see gaijin again
Nate The Great
profile pick too edgy for me
But always glad to have a reminder of a great show that met its end before its time.

Welcome Back Gaijin.
New MH:GU Style: Drive-by Style!
For anyone wanting to do this, it's perfectly possible in the USA version in fact I did it without the antidragon bombs I just hit him around the waiting time in the bridge with my GS and if you already used all the ammo in the 2 stage just go down and hit him some hits more, the key it's to stagger him before he attacks the fortress with either the cannons, ballista or the special ballista ammo
This video makes me think if there is a difficulty change on this quest. I spend all cannon balls and ballista shots in the first area, and Lao only starts to move to the second area right after my last ballista shot.
thanks Gaijin did it on my 2nd try. I'd practice a little while playing and watching it
i fainted twice, used up a binder without realizing, wasted pretty much half the cannons and i was super ready to abandon. i think i had about 1 min and 10% left before lao could've wrecked it and by some miracle, he was repelled. i was completely dumbfounded LOL how did that even happen?? i was so sure i'd fail the whole thing!! thanks for the guide, gaijin!
THE HUNTER IS BACK!!!
Thanks for this guide, I managed to solo Lao on the the key quest after a few tries
Got it on my 2nd try!!! Amazing guide 10/10
Thank you haha, i wont lie i for some reason didnt beat this until my third run, i got so frustrated and on my final run i actually used every ballista and cannon available, i think i had decided to grab some of the ammo early, but this turns out to be a waist. For anyone else with my problem, dont grab any cannons or any ballista ammo AT ALL during the first part, you can do it without that. That way when you get to the final zone, its all available to you. I finished at the 33 minute mark and i was panicking as the fortress was heavily damaged. Once i ran out of everything i just started wacking on his feet and body as much as i could, when i saw that i did kill him i was elated i felt a sigh of relief. Thanks agin!
Congrats!!!

basically this video in a nutshell
"I just whiffed one of the cannonballs"
*Something good about Pro Transporter*
Well good to know that you can solo him asap
I was expecting to be a Boulder falling down but, this moment shared the same trait with Zorah. (15:32)
Welcome back. Cant wait for the bug guide.
Specifically, wtf does pierce skills up for fleethammer/folicath do since ive heard it doenst make normal kinsect attacks pierce...
Nivshay Ram If I’m remembering correctly it just makes it so that the kinsect won’t bounce ever. For example, if you send it at Nakarkos’ shell it will bounce. You can charge it, but that requires holding R+X for a while or directing it three times in a row without recalling it. Pierce up negates that requirement and let’s it go through no matter what. Not necessary, just a way to keep it from bouncing and taking longer to recall.
@@Draco-9158
See, that what i would have thought based on the skill name. But some people on reddit have also said that the kinsect would still bounce on stuff like narkakos, or silver rath. Perhaps they were mistaken, but thats is why im confused. Because aside from that one guy saying it didnt work like that, im finding no concrete facts about how it is supposed to work.
Nivshay Ram Gaijin has a video about making kinsects in 4U. While it is a different game with different mechanics with some kinsect abilities moved around, it does say what the abilities are for.
I don't get it, the quest just doesn't work the way it's showed here. Did everything exactly as you did, Lao barely ever gets up when he's near the Dragonator even when i'm doing everything right, and just keeps on wailing on the forteress. 4th time now I've failed the quest, this is such a pain
Did you ever beat him? If so, have any advice?
I think I did this as close as I can, but I couldn't kill him fast enough. I didn't bring any strong weapons, since I was using it for the slots, but luckily I brought combines for my LBB+s. So I guess even if you whiff enough shots that you run out of Ballista/Cannons, extra LBB+s are there to save the day. :)
That goat scream at the end of the video. ;)
One time my friend and I managed to hit the Lao with two Demolishers in Area 1 and we were SO PROUD of it lol
