  • Do you know how to read side imaging? Do you know what its for or how to use it to catch more fish? Understanding side imaging takes some getting used to so today Tim is going to explain the basic functions, show examples of fish, and even talking about how to tune it for your situation.
Most moderately priced units today include side imaging as an option. Its a great tool, saving you valuable time on the water if you know how to use it to your advantage. Its great for locating structure, hazards, schools of fish, and more.
The unit we use is the Humminbird Solix 15. We chose this unit because of its unbelievably clear picture and incredible detail. The first day we used it we were locating sunken boats, rock piles, and other structure in places we fish every day but had never been able to see those objects before.
The Solix is the best of the best for side imaging but there are some other great units on the market as well. Below we will link the unit we're using along with the items needed to link the front and back unit together for waypoint sharing, as well as several other great imaging units at different prices.

coordination of different practical techniques is what is needed in a video: you spot a rock "point" on that side scan, you mark the point, then either use the Goto function to get right to it, or, grab the coordinates, insert them into your spot lock and again, Goto and hold there, etc......individually, none of these technical marvels really shine until it is demonstrated how to use them TOGETHER to truly put yourself right on the structural element that you see on the screen.

I've watched so many videos on so many different units and their features and for the first time somebody puts it in the sense of two flashlights being shined out each side. 🤯🤯🤯 so simple but dangit if that wasn't the comment that after years of using my unit actually really helped me think of it in a different way.

I think I finally understand side imaging! I’m going to buy a good fish finder for my kayak. I have a very basic one that tells me water depth, temp. and if there are fish. It’s the little HawkEye and has served its purpose. After lots of reading and window shopping the top three brands, I’ve decided on the Garmin UHD2 73sv. I really don’t care about all the maps and stuff like that. I just want good screen resolution and to be able to read what is in the screen. Towards the end of this video when you zoomed in talking about the shadows, I saw the fish outline! On other people’s videos, they talk fast and move around on the screen to much and I can’t keep up. Yours was short and easily explained. I’m a slow learner, but once I catch on, I’ve got it…

I bought a Hummingbird SI the first year they came out. It was only a five inch screen and I paid 999.99 plus the mapping lol.
I still use it today, but this spring I'm going mega. I won AOY in my club this year with only one depth finder at the console. I know I looked crazy running to the back of my boat to get the drop on a fish lol.
Great video and camera is o on point, thanks.

Great videoTim. One or two small observations from many other vids on SI. One about running width of screen left or right out to 3X what you have in depth. I think the reason for this condensing of width allows a higher density of pixels in a smaller screen area which in turn gives the user a higher definition picture on the screen.
I noticed when you went to set a weigh point or zooming in on that ball of bait, you knew it was 20 ft.or a little better to the right, but this will also show how many feet behind the boat from where you are now. I know on the Helix units a drop down screen comes on and gives you pretty precise locations. Your pretty finned friends don't stand a chance anymore. Keep up the fantastic work.

Why do all the pre-rigged boats come with Minn Kota TM’s and Lowrance units? Triton does it with the TrX Patriots and Ranger does it with the Ranger Cup boats. If I had it my way I’d go with an Ultrex, 2 12-inch Solix units, and Minn Kota Raptor poles. That 360 imaging is a game changer!

@ 3:55 looking at the depth which is at 26ft of water and side imaging capturing the small scool of fish at 25 ft chasing the scool of bait fish is actually right under the boat , and the reason why the bigger fish is showing up on the right side more so on the left although if u look closely they still appear at the same depth on the left side is because it seems that the scool of fish was corralling the bait from the bottom of the scool, chasing the bait back to the bank from right to left. All in all the fish was directly under the boat, not saying tim was wrong, but thats just my 2 cents from what goes on in my head on the water if i where to see that image. 👍

    • @67jroot
      @67jroot 5 років тому

    • @oldricky

it is the water column under the boat. The white line is the path of the keel and the present boat's location is at the top of the screen at the end of that white line. The wider the 'black" area, the deeper the water under the keel.

Great video. We have a Helix 12 Mega unit and don't get that good of side imaging. Really struggle to see any fish at all and sonar shows fish and we hook them. A lot of areas the fish are suspended so they should be easier to see than right on the bottom. I'm also running a left and right Si and a 2d Sonar transducer. Been wondering how it would work with just one transducer. Sort of frustrated. We live in Newberg, Oregon and have not been able to find a Humminbird expert or someone real knowledgeable to help. My question is, when using side scan do you use it primarily to look for structure or look for fish? If I find a nice rock shelf or structure with side scan, but don't really see fish on it, should I just keep moving? Even if it looks like a good spot? Trying to understand what the strategy is when using side scan. I just got a new unit and am adjusting to the new technology.

The answer to your question is "Yes".
If you found a rocky point holding bait and bass, does that mean there will be bass on it all the time? And if you find a similar rocky point that is NOT holding bait and bass, does it mean there is never fish on that location?
I hope you answered "NO" to both questions.
Structure is LIKELY to hold bass, especially if other criteria is present.
(Food, security, clarity, comfort, proximity, among others).
I AM going to look for structure and features I believe should hold bass. I will fish some of those even when I don't see bass. Obviously, seeing bass is a confidence booster

One question I have. I know the black is the water column directly under your boat. Then the distance to the left or right is also displayed on the screen. But shouldn't the distant left and right restart at zero from the bottom? Is it actually 60, 80, 100 feet out?

I believe that is correct. I don't think he described it very well. If your setting is set to 100 yards, and you are in 20 feet of water, I am almost sure you are getting 80 on both sides. You do need to account for the depth of water you are in.
