    April 6th, 1987. My 21st birthday. I remember this speech. A huge dispute going on in Canada over NAFTA.

    I remember seeing this speech as a young adult that's when I knew the Americans will always in the end make sure Canada is always free regardless of which Trudeau is in charge.

    Reagan, Mulroney, and Thatcher. Leaders that we desperately need today. Governments that were able to debate and develop bills that were fair to both sides of the aisle.

    Stirs up memories for sure, what stood out at me he restored confidence in the USA primarily and the rest of the world which was the mistake of the Vietnam war, I suppose that is plain language and maybe leaning a little one way a little bit but the region is my home away from home my retirement home. One cannot fathom that it even happened. RIP.🤠👍

    Of course Canada wasn't necessarily a nation built by refugees early on. Canada was largely United Empire Loyalists and our domestic political confederation was created in reaction to the U.S. and its sense of manifest destiny. We said no way! We didn't join. We remained loyal.

    Former prime minister John Turner was in favour of free trade with the U.S. too. He just didn't agree with the free trade deal being proposed by then prime minister Brian Mulroney. Reagan sought trade agreements with Japan at the same time. But not fair trade among equals. He insisted that Honda subsidize Harley Davidson to modernize or impose tariffs. He didn't think the American motorcycle company could compete on its merits against a foreign competitor.

  • @WalterFrith
    @WalterFrith 6 років тому +18

    Reagan was heckled during this speech by Canada's NDP and that footage is conveniently deleted from this video. They were upset, like most of the world was, over his Star Wars initiative. Reagan was a confused old man who didn't understand the economy, military policy and pretty much everything else during his time in office. He was a great communicator and expert glad-hander who was more about style than substance. His trickle down economic theories have been proven wrong and are responsible for the gap that exists today between the rich and the poor.

    • @jessicavlogger
      @jessicavlogger 6 років тому

      walter, those policies were intended to perpetuate inequality - they didn't fail, they created exactly the disaster they were intended to create.

    • @jessicavlogger
      @jessicavlogger 6 років тому

      you picked the median income metric because you're trying to hide the decline in average real incomes. the thing about you people is that you're dishonest, and i'm currently really just not interested in debating the point.

    • @jessicavlogger
      @jessicavlogger 6 років тому

      average _real_ incomes have *not* been rising. but, i actually don't believe in taxes. or property rights. or currency, at all, for that matter.

    • @jessicavlogger
      @jessicavlogger 6 років тому

      it is well known that real incomes have been stagnant since the 1970s in the united states. while i am certain that your data is dishonest, and i am capable of demonstrating as much, i'm not currently interested in doing so. maybe, i'll put it in my itinerary between demonstrating the existence of gravity and showing that water is wet.

    • @jessicavlogger
      @jessicavlogger 6 років тому

      i mean, you're the liar here scorpio, so you tell me - are you presenting average household data instead of average wage data to gloss over the decrease in real wages by ignoring the rise of two-income families? is that the tactic, here? we can figure it out if we look at it closely enough, together.
