2 things to take away from this video: 1. Chile seems like the best place in the world when it comes to metal, :P 2. Meshuggah sounds exactly the same live as in studio, perfection!
Hahaha, to follow up, theres probably another band in the deep shallow parts of Sweden that is Meshuggah x5, that band just doesn't want to be famous lmao (idk)
As a people, Chili has got some great natural rhythm! Wow! Lots of other countries can barely clap on beat to obvious 4/4, but for these folks to be dead on in feeling the 4 amidst complex polyrhythms is pretty impressive! An audience that is actually listening! Imagine that!
Not specifically directed at you of course but this is a pet peeve of mine: Why do people keep saying "Meshuggah it's just 4/4" That's technically true but it's like calling a ferrari "just a motorized horse carriage" Most of the polyrhythms they use are way way more complex than most uneven time signatures because those are still only 1 complex rhythm which is not as complex as playing multiple rhythms simultaneously that do not naturally match together, live, with other band members, without seemingly EVER fucking it up. I mean I've heard even Dream Theater fuck up more often than Meshuggah.
dimitriid I'm saying it because it's true. 99% of what they play is in 4. The angle you're coming from would make more sense if they played polyrhythms that were TRULY in other time signatures...but they're not...99% of the time, the polyrhythms that sound "odd time" actually cycle back to 4 before they ever make a full cycle within their own native time signature...what this means then, is that they are a HEAVILY syncopated band that draws phrases out beyond single bars, and that their syncopations hint at pulses found in odd times but are, in reality, always in 4/4 time. Trust me.
dimitriid What they are playing requires less technical skill than what Dream Theater does...this doesn't make Dream Theater any better, it's just the truth. Almost anyone who has music in their blood can sit down with an 8-string guitar and eventually hammer out any Meshuggah song...the drum parts require a bit more technical prowess (the most of all the instruments in Meshuggah, in fact)...however, even a relatively skilled musician, would require YEARS of speciality training to whip up an average Jordan Ruddess or John Petrucci part from a Dream Theater song.
Yes because Dream Theater doesn't only plays complex rhythms but also very fast tempo and complex melodies and what not. I get that, but my point is that people act as if playing Meshuggah songs was fairly easy and straight forward because it's "4/4" DT was perhaps a bad example on my part sure, but the point stands imho. And I disagree about almost "anyone" being able to hammer out a Meshuggah song, even on guitar. I know a lot of players that are relatively solid when they practice on their own but have absolutely no sense of rhythm and can't follow a band to save their lives even with click tracks and what not.
You are correct. Meshuggah is not SIMPLE 4/4 by ANY stretch! Nevertheless, when you break it down, they aren't playing in anything BUT 4/4. And it is true, that many people get lost trying to count out all of the hinted-at odd times, and many times get lost in the details. The bottom line is this: if you haven't figured out that Meshuggah is in 4/4, it puts you at a slight disadvantage in understanding what's going on with them musically and, may also indicate a lack of paying attention, or just a general lack of ability to feel rhythm. I think that's it is an incorrect action for one who has this knowledge and potential to capitalize and prey upon those who haven't or can't figure this out. But...at the same time, shame on those who boast their 'knowledge' of Meshuggah's complex 'odd times', ignorant of the 4/4 time that is the basis for all of Meshuggah's music.
It’s such a crazy and outlandish tone of guitar. I love the tense and nervous feeling after minds mirrors. It’s simultaneously one of the most brutal albums and one of the most thought provoking and deep albums. A true masterpiece
This is not a medley, I am right? I think this is two song "In Death - Is Life" and "In Death - Is Death". Man, what a crowd, congratz from Brazil to Chile!! Cheers!
Chile may have a lot of flaws (I am from Chile) but one thing they are perfect at is their crowd, Chile is the best crowd for metal bands no doubt. Saludos desde Chile
That gave me chills!!! This whole album is... well I read someone in a comment section say it tests your patience and even gives you a bit of anxiety. But the pay off is huge!
Do it. I saw them first when I was still in high school after I had just found the song New Millenium Cyanide Christ and bought Chaosphere and they did a tour when Nothing was coming out, they were hands down the best live show I ever saw and that was before they had the crazy light show to the click track.
You'd need the build up from dehumanization though IMO, which in turn builds from at least shed. Obviously the first half builds but from that middle point onward it's just insane I find. I wish they'd somehow figure out how to play the whole thing, it's my favorite album of all time.
10:05 I like to imagine the bass is playing 2nd fret (c string) 5th fret (f string) to add a flare to this part. Sadly that doesn’t look like that’s the case because the rhythm guitar and the bass play the same thing :(
Certainly in my mind, they're best album To date. Tomas didn't even actually play drums on there that's all programming. But live It is being absolutely killed.....
This drummer's really fuked up. He's really good on complicated patterns yet he fuks on up on lalaalala beats ... Just watch the ending of the video ...
2 things to take away from this video:

They are amazingly tight live
Seconded. Insanely tight.
InstaBlaster
That whole section of 33 is the peak of existence
I really hope Meshuggah understands how badass they are.
***** i dont think they do. I bet they think this music is normal lolol
Hahaha, to follow up, theres probably another band in the deep shallow parts of Sweden that is Meshuggah x5, that band just doesn't want to be famous lmao (idk)
They exist. They're called Vildhjarta.
Honestly, they might not.
And Vildhjarta wishes they were Meshuggah.
Chris Bell Any band wishes they were Meshuggah.
10:47 someone in the crowd demonstrating their vocal abilities
meshuggah = best metal band
+DrummerJulian surely
Yesss
Easily my favorite band ever. Close to it is Gojira. Two great sides of one heavy metallic coin.
AMEN
5:56 chileans know how to groove to meshuggah!

Your right. Damn chile is good
The crowd chanting adds such groove!

Got to see these guys about a year ago, and this part in particular during their set was an absolute out of body experience
This is not a medley, I am right?
I think this is two song "In Death - Is Life" and "In Death - Is Death".
Man, what a crowd, congratz from Brazil to Chile!! Cheers!
plus Mind's Mirror in the beginning
The whole album is mixed like one long song so its not really a medley its just a cross-section of the album.

ye, tis a great riff
Around the 8 min mark the groove just settles in for a bit haha! So good!
How can you have a catch-33 medley without the crazy riff from sum?
Still great though
You'd need the build up from dehumanization though IMO, which in turn builds from at least shed. Obviously the first half builds but from that middle point onward it's just insane I find. I wish they'd somehow figure out how to play the whole thing, it's my favorite album of all time.
This isn't a medley of the full album, it's just Mind's Mirrors, In life is death, and in death is life the same order they are on the album
11:23 Fredrik. You had ONE job.
😂😭
🤣🤣🤣
does anyone know where the footage jens got at 12:06 can be found?
I caught 2 shows on this tour. I wish they had filmed it better because the Ophidian Trek dvd does NOT do it justice.
Animals. I love em.
10:05 I like to imagine the bass is playing 2nd fret (c string) 5th fret (f string) to add a flare to this part. Sadly that doesn’t look like that’s the case because the rhythm guitar and the bass play the same thing :(
