Don't waste food. Everyone is working for that. This called a life style.
He is from Scotland, the culture is different, it's a wealthy country and they have an abundance of stuff including food.
A Tamil lunch is what we call an 'Arusuvai Unavu' meaning 'A meal comprising the six tastes' - Sweet, Tangy, Bitter, Sour, Spicy and Salty. This balance of taste acts as a sumptuos yet a complete, healthy meal.Food is both philosophic and medicinal in nature in Tamil culture. And this is the order in which u have the lunch meal in Tamilnadu. It's called 'Meals' here which the north indians called 'Thali'. Rice mixed with..
1)Paruppu with ghee
2)Sambar(Toor dhal based)
3)Kara kulambu/Puli kulambu(Tamarind based)
4)Rasam
5)Thayir/Curd
Payasam is the dessert. The vegetables comes in three types
Poriyal, Kootu and varuval. The vegetables are accompaniments or side dish u have with a main dish. You mix the various curries in the above order one after another with rice, have a mouthful along with small quantity of the veggie or Appalam.
Combinations:
Sambar+stir fry/deep fry
Puli/Kara kulambu +Kootu
Rasam+Kootu/deep fry
Curd+deep fry or pickle(Not the American type. I'm talking oorkaaa)
Appalam/Pappadam goes with all of it.
Definitions:
Poriyal - Stir fry
Kootu - Veg cooked with gram dal
Varuval - Crisp fry/Deep fry
Kulambu - Gravy usually tamarind based.
Rasam - A soup with tamarind base
Sambar - Toor dhal cooked with vegetables
Payasam - Sweet
Curd - Yogurt
Ghee - Clarified butter
Pickle - Excellent with curd rice
All the dishes above are vegetarian dishes.I can't even begin to explain about the vast array of meat/sea food based non-vegetarian Tamil food. That's for another day.

Those who are new to Tamil food usually thinks that mixing up all the items is the way to have it.. There are particular ways to eat which let's you enjoy the meal to the fullest.. It's frustrating to see the restaurant staff hesitating to teach others how to eat..They usually say just to mix it and eat it either due to language barrier or laziness..That's y the explanation.. I have left a lot of things purposefully. This is a typical banana leaf meal you have it in weddings and restaurants..If we had to talk about the varities of kuzhambu, sambhar, rasam as such including the mix and match types we'lll be needing a supercomputer..Thanks for all the likes and comments..
Great. I was in Kanchipuram a few years ago. They were serving me something very tangy and dark brown in colour but always a few drops. What is that?
Came into hotel as a beginner and got out as a pro, explaining to other foreigners...!!! 😍😍🎉🎊
@@ANR1122 Restaurants are colloquially referred to as "hotels" in India, even if they aren't attached to traditional hotels that rent rooms for the night. I'm not entirely sure why that is. I think it has to do with the word "hotel" being associated with "hospitality," and hospitality is what you get at both restaurants and traditional hotels that rent out rooms.
@@lukedaniell I am from India only but hotel and restaurant are two totally different things for Indians aswell. Maybe in old times they were treated the same because there was no concept of restaurant in old times, that's why a few old restaurants still have hotel written after their name but in present times if someone calls a restaurant a hotel it's mostly by mistake.
@@ANR1122 man I think u never heard about the colloquial languages in India. Hotel is a colloquial word in India. I wonder how u don't know about this being an Indian 😅😅. Yes the actual meanings between a hotel and a restaurant are different, but in day to day use they won't call like that.
so cute how they are taking care of him like a child.

@@sibii4325 okay i get it tamil language is very old...may be the oldest language still used widely. But there are many cities in the world like Labanese cities, Egyptian cities,Syrian cities or Iraqi cities, basically middle eastern cites are there which date back to 3rd millenium B.C and are still inhabitated continously. And there are Chinese cities too and Greek cities which date back to 2nd millenium B.C. In India itself there is Kashi(varanasi) which is pretty old and Indrapastha(delhi), Malwa(Ujjain) are contemporary to Madurai i suppose.

FUN FACT FOR YOU DALE :- By the way Madurai is close to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 as it only takes a 55 minutes ( not even an hours ) journey directly by ✈️ from Madurai to Colombo . So when you next time come to India 🇮🇳 ( hopefully when the CORONAVIRUS ends ) you can easily go to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 from Madurai ( if you want to go by ✈️) Madurai is not far from another famous town In Tamil Nadu called Rameshwaram . The town of Rameshwaram is special for many reasons. The first reason it’s special is because it’s literally located right in the India 🇮🇳 Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 bridge 🌉 called the Rama setu ( Adams Bridge in English ) . It’s literally the last 🇮🇳 town before the no mans land & Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 which is located right in the bridge and you really have different and beautiful shades of blue sea 🌊 in the bridge of Rameshwaram and there’s even a beautiful national marine park located there . There’s even a 45 hour ferry ⛴ journey from Rameshwaram 🇮🇳 to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 so If you want to literally travel between India and Sri Lanka in an adventurous way then I’d definitely recommend the 45 hour ferry ⛴ ride ( with rooms ) from Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka 🇱🇰. Tamil Nadu has many other beautiful towns also like Pondicherry ( Now called/ pronounced as Puducherry in Tamil amongst the locals ) it used to be a French 🇫🇷 colony and everything in the town of Pondicherry is French from architecture to art and even some cultural customs .
Ferry doens NOT work any longer, according to my information. There was one long time ago...
Wow subtitles directly on the screen for the first time! Incredible effort Dale!

I am from north and I went to Madurai , rameshwaram and kanyakumari when I was 13 years old . And one thing I gotta say , madurai has the best coconuts 😅 loved the Meenakshi Devi temple , people (mostly) , I was feeling so lonely in my train journey from Delhi to Madurai whole 2 days and there was this Tamil old couple in my train who didn't make me feel sad. They offered me food , they shared their son , family picture and gossips.
As a guy from Madurai studying in France this video makes me crave for food right now😂😂
Food in that restaurant looked really good. You could write a travel guide between your travels.
4:50 the slow mo at the indian head nod movement had me😂😂😂
Hi ,
Jigarthanda has almond milk, home made ice cream, basundi ( a cream based dessert), almond extract, basil seed . I am glad that you found madurai's famous drink.
Basil seed?? I heard somewhere, does it make your stomach cool in summer season?
the flavour of the jigarthanda itself comes from sarsparilla root extract (called nannari in tamil). That the predominant flavor you would get in the almond milk and the ice-cream that he added.
Loving your India videos especially the ones in Tamil Nadu. My husband is from Kanyakumari Tamil Nadu and I am loving seeing some areas I have visited, hearing sounds I am love and seeing the wonderful Tamil culture. Looking forward to your Munnar video as I think we have an Uncle living there

Hi Dale, I can’t wait to watch the video, I just got the notification! Just a question, how is lockdown effecting travelling?
The way to have meals: You mix one at a time generally with rice, one by one, then at the end mix rasam/curd in the left over rice. While having the rice you will just take one papad piece and eat it together. It won't taste good if you mix the dal/curry superficially with rice. You should mix properly so that the rice gets the flavor.
