Nice review, looking for my next tyres for my 2018 Tiger 800 XCa and these are definitely on my list as I do around 70/80 road and 20/30 offroad stuff. Another tyre is the Metzeler Karoo Street (similar to Rally STR, come off the same fabric) or maybe the Dunlop Trailmax Mission or maybe the Conti TKC 70 Rocks. I already got the normal Conti TKC 70 and Michelin Anakee Adventure which were also fine tyres. Anyway keep up the good work!

I have done about 20,000kms on mine on my VERSYS 300X, just come back from 18 days in Laos in rainy season, lots of big potholes, lots of weaving trying to avoid them, also quite a lot of mud, very slimy and soft, also various avalanches, loose stones and rocks to avoid, overall glad I had them, my two rider colleagues had MT 60’s , they each had punctures same day but not the rally’s. Getting ready for 4000kms around Vietnam in December, think I will buy another set first. Great video.

I've got these on my scrambler 1200 XE. Great road tyre, back hooks up well offroad BUT if you push hard on the dirt the front gets sketchy. Its always a compromise, great onroad performance you have to trade off-road I suppose. Excellent review Mate.

  • @SecondHalfofLife

Coming off a set of Avon Trailriders. They were good tires for touring and canyon carving and a gravel road here and there. They wear the center strip pretty fast on highways, which unfortunately is hard to avoid around here to get out of town. I think you sold me on these STRs though. Sound like they have a similar vibe but a little more panache and more dirt capable. I still love my on road cornering too and want something that feels safe in the wet (which the Avon's did well) and these sound like they'll do the trick.
Going on 2012 Air cooled Triumph scrambler for me. I might got with the wider front as well... gives a really good look. Thanks for the review!

Those scorpions look nice, I am looking to change my tyres in June, currently on OEM triumph tiger900 tyres which are pretty much a road focus tyre, which is fine for now and for the next few months. I have only done 667 miles but hoping to get a few thousand more when I bring the bike out to Germany with me (mountains near me YAY!!) and then change them up before the “Adventure Bike Rider festival” at the end of June, so will likely put on the battle axe tyres, as has been advised by others. You mentioned temperatures down to 7 degrees C, but being in the UK and Northern Europe that could be a normal spring day 😂.
Was a shame the competition was not world wide, the stuff looks so cool.

Good tyre. Rolls edge to edge so much better than the stock tourance. I hit a roundabout after first fit and nearly ended up in the middle it turned that sharp. Rear hooks up well off road....front..that's a yeah nah. Great on road, tends to wash sideways in wet or loose. I'd go more aggressive on the front for off-road. The Metzeler Tourance is a really good tire for street and rain. Very robust, very grippy and also attractive, not hard at all, like you say. It is a 95% on road tire and the Pirelli's should be near perfect for your type of riding.

I have the Fantic Caballero Scrambler 500 and they are road racing tires. They handle turns at speeds. You are glued to the ground even on a 150 kilo motorcycle. I had a Lexus try to lose me In the mountains. They failed but I had this sensation from the vblocity of my helmet wanting to come off my head. Luckily for chin straps. Those are wicked tires and my motorcycle supposed to be in dual purpose. But those tires especially the backone is so fat and the ride is so smooth. If you don't want nobbies on your motorcycle and you still want to be able to do some dirt riding I would suggest these The perelli scorpion it's an awesome motorcycle tire. He is 100% correct. I habe abdominal injury so I cannot do much off road unless standing on the pegs. Mine are 2020 maybe a little different but total traction and handling. My motorcycle only has 400 km on it so I'm not comfortable yet doing a burnout but on my G TLI went to eagle GT's $400 apiece so often with 467 rear wheel HP. This moto is my baby and the tires make the 🏍

Just ordered a set for my MT07. I live on a dirt road, so every ride starts and ends on dirt. I didn't want to hurt my street performance, but wanted a bit more grip. I ride the stock tires way beyond their design off road. I want to swap them before it bites me. 😆 it's only a matter of time. Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.

A bit late to this review! I put a pair of STRs on my new Transalp 2,400 kms ago, also in (South) Australia, and got a bit of a shock with the price (in late 2023). A 'Pirelli guy' for decades, wanting about 70% - 30% road/off-road, so the choice was easy. I am riding this bike fairly gently, now at 70 y. o (and after 61 years riding) but I am looking at a fair bit of wear already on the rear for this short mileage. And they cost more than the last set of Pirelli 'stickies' I put on my Ducati sports bike (its 27th set) with the 190 rear, where the Honda's is only a 150...
So I was disappointed to notice that the front Pirelli STR was made in Indonesia, and the rear in China! In other parts of the world (Europe) they get STRs made in Brazil apparently. (You don't say where your 2020 ones came from). I wouldn't mind, except that they charge Italian prices for them! I find the tyres work fine, as you say, on bitumen or gravel, but some mention of tyre pressures may be worth including in a tyre test.
But I take some encouragement from the distance you have achieved with them. I can't see me getting anywhere near that, given the visible wear on the rear at present, but hopefully they won't be finished by 4,000 kms, as I was starting to wonder, with a bit of a trip planned. Thanks for your test. I shall ride on with optimism, in light of your feedback, and see how long they last. The standard Dunlop rear was pretty finished at 5,000 kms, which included conservative running in, so we shall see.

Yea man, i don't think i'll swap them out. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
Honestly i really don't like it. It's the heaviest lid out of the bunch i own (minus the Predator haha) is noisy and the material is substandard. All IMO of course

Hey mate- nice review and fuck me dead you sure love your cornering- just like me LOL - no chicken strips hahaha- well just letting you know your review match what I see elsewhere and for my riding style on my KTM 390 Adv these tires are what I want to have- I have had the TCK 70 which is what my bike came with and they are also excellent for OUR riding style and milage is very similar- I got 15000 out of the rear and that is riding hard two up and cornering on dry road was a dream- on the wet I am not crazy so same attitude- take it easy no matter what tires- off road the TCK 70's are no match for the Pirelli Scorpion but they do the trick for most light to medium off road stuff- wet grass and mud forget it though-- like most 70/30's I guess. I had the Mitas EO 7+ after the Continental TCK 70's and was disappointed in the wear as I only got 5000 out of the rear- which again was due to the fact I mostly ride on road and hard fully loaded- so I guess no big surprise to be fair- riding in the Philippines the roads are warm so that also did not help-
I look forward to getting a set of the the STR's as my next tire of choice- thanks mate and ride safe
    cheers Jim

Getting these fitted on my supermoto yam wr400 on ktm 390 wheels (I know abit odd) the lads I work with do alot of green lane work on triumph tigers and big adventure bikes, I did alot of research before going for these as they're definitely not cheap! Be interesting to see what mileage they give on a much lighter bike with more explosive power delivery, after watching the reviews I definitely think theyll suit my riding style alot more than the current rosso 2's as they just plain suck in the wet and the uk is hardly known for glorious sunshine...

I’m switching to these tires on my BMW R1100R. Do you run the same air pressure on these tires, as you do on street tires? My bike calls for 36 PSI front, and 42 PSI rear.

Hi.I have been using metzeler sportec m5 on my 390 duke but am facing with wearing and chipping issues of tire over bad roads here in india in some patches. The only reason limiting me from switching otherwise is the calmness the m5 has over high speed sweeping corners. Can you suggest whether the scorpion rally str would be suited for all these??Never tried semi-offroad tires hence this curiosity.I beleive the pirellis would help me in the bad roads but what about corners and panic braking?

I put these on my BMW 1250 GSA. They are great tires both on and off road. However...they are loud on the freeway from 75-85 mph...painfully so. Also, they can't handle rocky terrain on the big heavy bike. I literally popped the rear twice. It rips in the middle, between the knobs and is NOT repairable. The first time I was being very aggressive, and blamed myself for pushing too hard. The second time, they just flatted...same way..a split in the middle, and I wasn't pushing very hard. The rear is NOT the right tire for an aggressive rider on the big bike, unless you enjoy getting flats. Good luck!

You’re right on spot : So far : 10500 km with my Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires on my Triumph Tiger 900 GT & i love them. Really sticky on asphalted roads; great for riding, for cornering, sportively in twisties; Very good for gravel roads & for dry forest roads; i will definitely buy another set when they will be dead. Like you said : it’s really not best tires for riding off-road in sand or in mud… I try to avoid both 😉.
