- Hi Everyone and welcome to yet another video on Motoscope!! I want to thank you you guys who have been supporting my channel from the very first video! Also, a warm welcome to those who are visiting for the first time.
In this video, I've covered my First Impressions of the Pirelli Rally STR dual-sport tyres.
My final shortlists for the tyre upgrade were:
1. Pirelli Rally STR
2. Timsun 659/660
3. Apollo Alpha H1
I eventually chose the Pirelli's simply because of its credibility as a premium dual-sport tyre. I bought a 2018 second-half model from "House of Tyres" at Khargar Navi Mumbai.
Specs: Available in stock sizes for Duke 390
Front - 110/70/17
Rear - 150/60/17
Cost - 15,500/- for front & rear
*Note: Please change both front and rear while upgrading, as these tyres should ideally not be clubbed with another brand/make, as they may have stability issues due to different tread patterns.
Overall these are great tyres that offer as much grip on the road as they do offroad. What really surprised me is the excellent grip they offer on wet roads, which is rare for a dual-sport tyre. To sum up, I think the Rally STRs are an awesome onroad/offroad tyre that definitely justify their price-tag, which is a little more than its competitors.

I recently upgraded to these as well... Ure spot on about leaning on corners for the first time.. You'll feel the motorcycle just dipping along the corner, but its just a matter of getting used to. To be frank, I was expecting more life outta it....12K doesn't cut right... But considering the amount of grip it offers in dry and wet, I suppose that'll be all it can do.
Yes that's true. I can barely differentiate the lean experience on this tyre, in comparison to the Metz. And it is as much fun! Coming to the mileage, I think Pirelli claims around 15k kms with a mix of road and dirt. 12k is a bit less, but the amount of confidence that this tyre gives you on any terrain is what makes it worth the buck..

Very informative video. Though I just loved the Metzeler for their unbelievable grip, it's really not suited for even a little bit of off-road.
The Tyre gave up at 1am in dead of night with me having my sister in law as pillion!!! And that too in Delhi... Had to leave the bike at a petrol bunk and when I came back next morning, the Tyre had cracked because I had to ride deflated WITH pillion just to get to a 'safe zone'. Got some weird CEAT Tyre on urgent basis but the handling has changed.

Thanks mate!! I love the Metz for their grip too! You should check out the Apollo Alpha H1. Handles almost as good as the top rated Metz, but lasts longer..
Love the scrambler vibes. The first thing I'll do when I get my cb300r is switch to this tyre and get golden/blue adjustable brake aka clutch levers ❤️
That will only make your CB300 that much meaner and capable in bad terrains!! 🙌🏽

never seen someone with offroad tires on the duke. It's pretty cool. This is the same tire the husqvarna 401 uses so now the duke can compete with it offroad.
The Duke is at best a soft roader even with button tyres. The suspension lacks play and adjustment, and the riding position does not support riding trails.. However, with some mods, that can be improved.

Thanks for confirming the best 60/40 tyre for my 390 Duke here in NZ 🙂. One question: with all the off-roading you do, have you had any issues with the wheels/rims? I noticed in the local dealer, comparing side by side, they are not as strongly constructed around the hub as the more dual purpose 390 Adventure's wheels. Dukey is more hollow looking... I'm only 60kg so that should help! Thanks for the great videos. Steve.
I personally haven't faced any issue with the wheels yet. But I have come across quite a few cases where people ended up with cracked alloys. The ideal choice if you plan on doing technical stuff, are spoked rims. Alloy wheels will never be able to handle impact and pressure like spokes..

A. What is the full name of you ktm duke model? did not see it in israel....
B. Did you have the chance to try this tire in deep sand?
C. Did you had Mezeler Karoo 3 before?
Hi. Glad you liked the video!! Here are answers to your questions:-
A. It's KTM Duke 390cc
B. I did not try it on deep dry sand yet as its raising here. However, this does really well in wet mud. The tread blocks do a great job in maintaining traction, and hence I'm pretty sure they'd do well in deep sand as well.
C. No I haven't. Honestly, it's a bit of an overkill for this bike in terms of cost. Plus, the Pirelli Scorpion is the more tried and tested performer.

Hey! Thanks for the video. It was informative. I’ve a 2017 Duke 390 (same as yours) and I was thinking of getting a set of these tyres for my motorcycle. Firstly there isn’t much information for these tyres from Indian users so I had to refer to the reviews from users from other countries. A consensus was that these tyres don’t last longer than 5-6k kms. So, my questions to you were:
1. How many kms have you covered by now with these tyres?
2. Assuming more than 70% of the above kms was done on-road, how have the tyres worn? Do you think they will wear out within 5/6k kms as the other user reviews suggested and if you think they’ll last shorter/longer, how long do you think they’ll last?
[Most of the users in other countries had bigger motorcycles (BMW GS, Africa Twins and the Teneres) hence the speed rating on their tyres might’ve been different plus their rear tyre the will also have to put up with more power most of the times which might’ve resulted in quicker wear]
Hey there buddy! Well I've done about 2k kms on these tyres, out of which 70% has been on roads. However, the remaining 30% has either been on gravel, mud, broken Indian roads etc. And I have to say I am impressed! The tyres are aging really well, with no visible cuts or bruises. In fact, I dont even slow down on bad roads anymore. Having said that, if you are planning to do a Ladakh or Spiti on these tyres, I'm pretty sure you will suck some major life out of them by the time you're back. With my style of riding, which is a little on the aggressive side, I'm pretty sure I will get more mileage on these than my Metzellers, which was around 8.5k kms. In fact, it would take really powerful bike and really crazy terrains to wear these tyres out in 5-6k kms.
Can a newbie or first time bike rider get used to Duke 390 as starter bike? I feel confident but see a lot of negative thoughts around it.
How much price difference in between front and rear ..
And what is the cost of both tyre?
Is Piralli still manufacturing this tyre? They are not easily available:(

I'm looking for a dual sport tyre for my Duke too even though my Alpha H1s are just around 2k kms old. Didn't see the point in wasting them when I want to hit the trails with the Duke, given it's the monsoon.
Wanted to go for this tyre, but it's way beyond my budget. So, have decided to go for the MRF Revz D dual sport ones. Much cheaper though am sure they'll be inferior to the Pirellis.
Hey man! Yeah the Pirelli's are heavy on the pocket, and that's one of the reasons even I am contemplating over my next tyre. I am deciding between the Timsuns, Metzeler & Ralco. But yes, none of these tyres would have the same zing that the Pirelli's have.. :)
@@MotoScope true, we get what we pay for. If you can hold off for a couple of weeks, I might be able to help with your choice as I've ordered the MRF Revz D tyres (₹8.5K for the set) today. These dual-sport (60-40) tyres are causing quite the flutter from what I hear as they're softer compared to proper offroad tyres such as Ralco and some of the Timsuns. Moreover, the MRFs are radials, so should be better than the aforementioned names in terms of road performance and grip. These come as stock tyres on the Svartpilen 250, and all reviews from auto journos praised its tyre's grips on wet tarmac. So, I'm hoping for the same :fingers crossed:

You can go for any exhaust with glass wool/ceramic wool. It depends on the type of exhaust note you like. I personally prefer the AEW Wide bore exhaust for the deep bass. I also like Way2speed exhausts for their mix of bass and treble.
hi, how long did these tyres last for you?
These tyres have done 9k kms of all kinds of terrain and are still on. But its fair to say they are done! The tread has become much smaller with multiple points of air leak. Need to upgrade.

I have 390D, while cornering , if there is slight layer of mud(even in very very thin), which is a very common case with our Indian conditions, the front tyre feels like loosing traction and hence control, it just shakes confidence. And rear tyre tends to fish tail in similar condition. Does this tyre prevent this wierd feel, and better confidance while cornering, when there is sudden layer of mud in mid of a corner?( High speed cornering) Thanks in advance
These tyres corner as well as the Metz. But when the there is dust or gravel around, these tyres perform better due to the wells on both peripheries, which help keep contact with the road. Hence, minimal fush tails or your rear losing line. However, if you are purely looking at a tyre that can corner well in road conditions, then nothing is better than the Metzellers. Go for the Pirelli's only if you have offroad on your mind.
Hey! I also upgraded to these. Just wanted to know what’s the recommended air pressure ? And how do you like to keep the suspension with these ?
For road use I stick to the recommended 29psi front and 32 psi rear. While doing tricky trails, I come down 2 notches both front and rear as this helps increase the contact patch and extract better traction. Suspension setup is stock and on the stiffer side, which I prefer. Honestly, there is not much you can do with the Duke's suspension.

Yes I think it should be compatible, as this is a 17" tyre. You can try reaching Pathpavers in Delhi. Theybhave this tyre. Pathpavers have their website and are also there on Instagram. They have recently received stock of these tyres, so reach out to them.

I was looking for changing my Duke 390's Metzellar stock ones now..I had seen a guy in Manali on duke with these tyres recently.
I'm not that fan of Metzellar as they lasted for around 8k kms now and sometimes I tend to feel now grip is getting lost. Planning to go for Pirelli Scropion one Rally str which you have reviewed.
Do you still recommend this after 2 n half yrs of your video or should I go for some other one for OffRoad?
Siddharth's review is awesome and I would too go for the STR had the price been around 15K for a set. However, now they've gone up to almost 19K per set.
So, dug around a bit and learned about the MRF Revz D NV dual sport tyres, which come as stock fitment on the Svartpilen 250 and have been reviewed well for their grip even in the wet. I'm sure they won't be as good as the Pirellis but at ₹8.5K for a set, the deal is too hard to ignore.

Very nice review, very informative (unlike the majority of useless "reviews" out there). A few questions please: 1. What is the model of that Metz that you're referring to? 2. Do you really feel good about the Pirelly's Rally STR grip in mud? (I think they aren't off road for real, so thick mud will probably make them rounded as slick tyres in a minute too... Or not?) 3. Have you ever had a chance to compare these with Metzeler Enduro 3 Sahara?
Thank you so much.. 1. I was referring to the Metz M5 Sportec which comes as stock with the D390 in my country.
2. The Pirelli's are pretty good in the mud, and no it does not form a cake. The wells eat in all the mud, & the tread blocks are still able to make contact with the surface. Secondly, the Pirelli's have a tendency to throw off the mud in the wella when the tyre spins, rather than become a donut like the Metz. This is why you still manage to get some grip. But mind you, this is not a hard core offroad tyre like the ones on dirt bikes.
3. Ni, I have not tried the Metz Enduro 3 as it is not available easily in India. But at first look, it looks similar to the Metzeler Tourance, which is also a good dual purpose tyre..

Nice review. Had a question though..do these tyres reduce the mileage of the bike on paved roads? And do they have any problems while installing like do they touch the swing arm?
I have noticed Zero reduction in mileage after using these tyres for over a year. I still get about 27-28 in the city and between 28-30 on the highway, provided Im gentle on the throttle.

No not a good idea. The tread patterns will be different and that will cause stability issues. Change both tyres mandatorily.

how does it feel to go faster? i like to do both speeding and off road, so how much effect will this have on a high speed cornering? i'm afraid i wont be able to go as fast on a corner
There is hardly any difference!! I still corner at the same speeds. Infact the tyre grips excellently while leaning into corners. Check out my insta page - Sidharth_sharath, where you can see what this tyre can do 🙂
my Metzlers are getting 2,3 punctures in every 2,3 days, its getting hard for me to choose a pair of tyre which are suitable for indian roads for long time and not get punctured, i live in an area where there are uneven roads and lot of gravels. Please help.
For fewer punctures and for better grip on gravel, broken roads, offroad, slush etc, the Pirelli is the better option. But if you want a tyre that lasts longer and has excellent grip on wet and dry roads, go for Apollo.

Yes absolutely! This will be perfect for your use.. This will make your tyre more potent on bad terrains and wet roads..

That won't be a good idea, because they are both very different tread patterns, and would affect the stability of your bike. Change only as a pair.

Pirelli claims 15k kms, but i think about 12k easily, unless you are really into touring & off roading.

The Rally STR can deal with punctures better because of its tread. Infact I have not had a single puncture on these tyres till now. But in terms of life lean grip and tyre life, the Apollo H1 is supreme.

How much kilometres did you get out of these Pirellis?
I've done about 4.5 k kms so far and the tyres are holding up well, with no visible damage. Pirelli claims about 15k, but it all depends on how rough you use it 😁

Absolutely! The grip on these tyres is awesome. I used to corner a lot on my Duke, and I never had any issues. The tyre also performs very very well on gravel and hilly roads. Only thing would be that these wont last more than 12k kms if you do a lot of riding on rough terrain.. But they are totally worth it..

Really great review. It gave a lot of clarity on the factors that need be taken into account while choosing tyres. Are these tyres preferable for 80-20 usage? More road and less off road?
These are 60:40 tyres. Having said that, they perform excellently well on the roads, both dry and wet. The tyre would also give you better mileage with less offroad usage.

You can look at the Pirelli MT60, Metzeller Karoo, Bridgestone Battlax, Michelin Anakee etc. depending on which brand has a size that fits the Street 750..

Im thinking about getting these tyres for a 2021 model, Im just a little worried about the clearance with the front and back mud gaurds???
Just go ahead. No issues with clearance. The width of the tyre is the same as the stock Metz, even with the button tread. There is sufficient gap between the tyre and mudguard. I used the bike for almost 2 years with the stock mudguard. I have gone in for a beak just a couple of months back, because I have also done a few other offroad modifications. Good option for Duke 390?
In my opinion, a bit of an overkill. The 120s will affect the handling, making the bike less flickable. 150s are the best option..

Thanks man. No these tires are not available in 140, but they are available in 130 90 18 I think. But I'm not sure you'll be able to fit a 18" on your cbr. You can also check out timsun, they have some good dual purpose tires in 140 section. Good luck on your ride 💪🏼

How much kms do these tyres run? I want the numbers for both front and rear separately.. I'm planning on an All Inda ride and want a decent tyre with on-off road capabilities. Currently I'm using Apollo Alpha H1 and it is an excellent tyre to be used on tarmac but I want a tyre that'll do off road well too. So I want to know how much kms these tyres run
I can't tell you exactly how many kms they would run, but Pirelli claims about 12k kms with 60/40 use, where 40 is off-road. The front tyre would definitely last longer. I have friends who have finished half its life on a Ladakh ride, because of the terrain. So it really depends on the roads you would ride on. In terms of the grip, you would love it both on tarmac and on the dirt. Grip is supreme! Pirellis are not known for their mileage, but the Scorpion rally being a hard compound in the center, does offer decent figures. But I think anything over 12k kms would be a bonus on these tyres. You can also look Metzeller Tourance and Timsun TS822/823 which offer better mileage but compromise on the grip..
@@MotoScope How many kms have you run with the scorpion? You posted this video 6 months back, so I assumed you might have used the bike for 10000km or atleast 6-8k kms. I thought by then the half life of these tyres can be understood. I intend to cover about 18000kms in my trip so I know I'll have to change my tyres atleast once. The thing is I intend to start my ride with the scorpion and I'll cover atleast 5-6k kms before entering Jammu Kashmir and I wanted to use the scorpion to last atleast till I get out of J&K. I hope you understand my concern.
@@397sidhu CodeRedTV I have only done about 4000 odd kms with mostly tarmac and the occasional dirt. The tires are holding up well so far, with no visible changes to the tread. In your case, the tires will definitely last over 5-6k kms, infact even more unless you are planning to do a Raid the Himalayas. However, you will definitely have to change tires at some point between 8-10 K kms mostly, and at that time you will have to change both front and rear even though your front with have some life left in it. You can then go for the Alpha H1s, which I personally like a lot. So yes, you should be easily able to get over 8k kms on the Pirelli, even more if you go easy on them.
It's only been 1.5 years since I'm using the Alpha and I have already changed both my front and rear sets twice. And I'm so in love with them and they are so worth the money. For the ride I'll use the scorpion first and then I'll stick to the Alpha.

I own a Dominar 400 and both the stock tyres are worn out and now I am looking for a new set actually I am looking for a tyre that can last for at least between 18k-20k , so can you please help me out I don't want to go back to the MRFs , peace✌
Go for the Apollo Alpha H1. Will last around 15k kms, but the grip that it offers is amazing. For higher mileage, you can look at Ceat or Timsun tires, but you will be compromising on the grip.
Hi guys, don't buy pirelli has some quality issues in India, go for metzeler tyres only.
Maybe your specific tyre had an issue. I did not face one. And Metzeller does not have a tyre that match the Pirelli STRs.
Atleast you could have ridden it Off-road and shown us.
This is a tyre review, not an off-road tutorial. I think the caption makes that very clear!
@@MotoScope the caption reads - tested on road and off road , but the bike is only standing on a stream for most of the video except for those three shots and the tyres look so clean , like they were just now purchased and fitted. I clicked on this video to see how the byk behaves with off road tyres on rough terrain but was disappointed. What you said could be found on the product brochure. But thanks a lot.
@@melvinpaul2841 The testing was done before shooting this video. Incase you watched it from the beginning, it does mention having been ridden for a few hundred kilometres before doing this review. Why the tyres were clean - let's just say that a stream of running water has the ability to clean dirt off the tyres. As far as offroading prowess goes, as mentioned this is a 60:40 and does really well in the dirt, but don't expect it to behave like button treads from Maxxis. The distinction, however, is that it does equally well on tarmac, both wet and dry. Tbh, I didn't have the bandwidth to shoot extended scenes of doing dirt trails, as I shoot solo.
