In the first year of your boa's life, you are very likely to see defensive hissing and striking. Big picture, I'd say that an animal like this is stressed by handling and it should be time limited. This is not so much taming as maintenance handling. "Taming" of these animals comes more through development/maturation than anything active you can do. If you are intimidated by a defensive baby, that's okay. It's meant to be intimidating. Here's a quick video showing you some techniques to get through it.

Oh jesus she is nippy haha! Reminds me of jungle carpet pythons. My girlfriend got a ball python recently and she's so sweet we love her.

This is good to know, I just got a columbian rainbow boa and she is so small. She was wonderful up until we tried to feed her like she ate her mouse first try and then I guess we accidentally scared her n she spit it out:( so now it was hard getting her to eat and she's become quite defensive I just want to be able to handle her more but she very snippy and I'm still fairly new to snakes
That's all normal. Don't handle her until she is feeding constantly.

The problem I'm currently having with a yearling Suriname (although I'm starting to suspect she's a Guyana, but whatever) is she doesn't hiss or telegraph her strikes at all, she's just extremely reactive. So, I'll be holding her and she's just chillin, cruising around, casual tongue flicks, and then something arbitrary will spook her and she strikes, then goes right back to chill mode. For example, I looked away for literally a second and turned my head back and she immediately struck at my face. Keep in mind, I'm pretty conscious of slow movements. It's the most unnerving thing when you're holding her because she is gonna be big eventually and this seems like it's just part of her personality and there's no taming it out of her. Maybe I just need to put in more time with her. Any experience with a boa like this?
Thanks for watching, Mikey. Yes! I have a bunch of young boas that do that. Have hope. They are developmentally very nervous when small and calm down with time and age and size. That doesn't mean they all become puppy dog tame or "kid safe" but they all do get better than what you are experiencing when they are young. BCC are more nervous than some other types of boas. I'd say they best thing you can do is keep handling sessions short and brief and end them before it gets agitate enough to bite. A few minutes a few times of week will get you a tame boa over time.

My boy Ba Ba is definitely to big for this now, but his less defensive and more just plain food motivated. I always move him over to a bin for feeding, but boy, does he not care 😂
Thanks for watching. Food motivation is different than this defensive behavior...Look up tap/hook training your snake. I personally don't move to feed and think it causes some problems in the long run.

My BCC get onto small rats around 2.5-3 years.
