I always just get them out regularly so they're used to being handled. Except for at least 48 hours after feeding, of course. Then when I do get them out, I just take a long plastic spatula and let them smell it and nudge them a little. Just to let them know it's not feeding time. Then I just carefully pick them up. Always support them with two hands and don't make any sudden, jerky movements like the man said. I've never had a problem with red-tail Boa's. Great animals.
I have two baby boas. A BCI that is about 4 months and a Sunglow that is about 3 months. The BCI is very chill, I can just grab her in the middle with no problem. The sunglow is very timid and defensive. I am going to try this method with my Sunglow next time I have to take her out of her enclosure! Thank you for the video.
Just got my first baby red tail and held her for the first time today using your method! Worked perfectly for the both of us!! So happy i came across your video!
I've had my boa for about 6 months now and she's about 10 months old, she's fine in the viv, but I put her in a separate box for feeding and every time I go to take her out, she becomes aggressive, obviously because she thinks there's more food. She tagged me once when I went to get her but I found your video and tried it today, since it's feeding day and I wanted to see how she'd act, and it worked perfectly! Thank you man!!
Some snakes start to associate being handled with feeding if you move them before you feed them. My friend had that same problem, and switched to feeding his snake in the enclosure and hasn't had problems since.
I’ve had my boa for about 4 months now, she was very defensive when she first arrived, and snapped at me about 8 times while I was trying to get her into her enclosure. After I gave her a few days to adjust to her new enclosure I didn’t ever grab her, I would lightly touch the back of her body and stroke her for a minute or two. She never struck at me when I did this. After a few weeks I would pick up the back of her body just a little bit, and she’d slither away really fast. I let her do that over and over for about a month. After that I finally picked her up fully and she was perfectly content with it, and she doesn’t mind being held at all now. Sometimes I can put my hand in the enclosure near her and she sniffs my hand and after a minute or so she’ll slither over it on her own and I pick her up that way. She’s super well behaved and has never bit me once
Thank you, this helped me. I have a baby motley boa (beautiful charcoal and black) he's tame and I had no problem the first few days. Then he just started striking. So again, thank you.
What if your baby boa (mine is a red tail) doesn’t give you a chance to cover his head? Mine is instantly striking as soon as I open his drawer, he doesn’t like people, I’ve tried working with him but I don’t have a chance to grab him or anything before he strikes and bites me
Hi I have a baby boa constrictor it hiss and striking and in his hide usually this works and even when I have him in my hands after trying this technique he won’t strike?
perfect vid, i getting my first boa so perfect timing. do u mind doing a boa collection vid...also wats ur average size for females and how long does it take to get that size..amazing stuff man, glad i subbed i cant wait for more vids
red tails are dope every snakes temperament is different thoe I have my red tails who are always mellow even when they were babies even my blood Python they were mellow they his and puff up but never would strike at me except my newest blood that one as soon a you open enclosure it's game on so each snake there own
I’ve had my boa for a week now. Started picking her up after 3 or 4 days. She isn’t aggressive at all but when I have her in my hand she can’t be still, she tries slithering away fast up my arm or away from my hand. Any tips on getting her to calm down? I feel like I may drop her she doesn’t wrap around my hand or fingers
Yes hook training works really well. Once the babies are used to handling I will start hook training. It sure does come in handy when working with adults.
RevolutionBoas Hook training most of the time is not even needed. Especially with these. Hook training is great with baby carpet pythons though as they are more nervous than most snakes and one of the species I do not lead new keepers too. Hooks are only good for species like carpets or a adult snakes that is very defensive. In which case your not training anymore but trying not to get bitten.
Donovan Turner people like that keep the snakes in lunch boxes and think they are happy with a cage smaller than theyr body length. I would bite them fucks as well if I would be a snake. They think they're experts only because they know colours and names, they don't know shit other else than that. I feel sorry for the snakes.
Actually, baby boas do much better in small enclosures. In the wild, babies are not seen very often - they are hidden, they cram themselves into very tight crevices or under cover. They are not all crawling around getting exercise in the open. Predator avoidance, that is their instinct. Small cages make them feel more secure in that way. Really works. Once the baby snake is established, feeding well and growing a bit, a larger enclosure will be fine.
Mark Giacalone watch Snake bytes channel and see my point. Plus my youngest snake is approximately the same size, he has a glass terrarium and he seems pretty damn comfortable. I take my snakes out every day except a day or two after I fed them, because then they don't wanna be moved. Never bit me once, if they are uncomfortable they just say(by making their head larger or their typical sounds) it and I put them back but I don't have truble at all taking them out. The cage has to be tall as it's long and it needs thick branches and different areas where they can lay(some boas like to climb alot, especially hog island). I even have a tree in my living room only for them. I hate people that say that they love snakes and keep them like that, read where they came from and see what they need. I'm posting ,, hateful" comments only on channels that talk shit without knowing anything. I'll probably make a video about how people really have to treat pets.
I got a red tail boa from a breeder who isn't around any more the boa is 2 feet 9 months old but it's just a hassle to feed I've tried live and frozen and he doesn't take then he takes pre killed but it's hard to get him to eat is like he lacks any instinct at all any suggestion?
You kinda have to when they are in tubs or Sterilites as babies, even my baby green anacondas are unphased by me coming from above. I think it's a bigger issue when the snake is not handled on a regular basis but all my babies are handled often.
+Jesse F2TE Just make sure that before you actually get the animal you know exactly what requirements it has regarding temperature, humidity, enclosure size, etc., and that you have everything set up before the snake arrives. It should never be an impulse buy. Boas live very long and are definitely a commitment.
Hey I grabbed my boa out of the bag but I used overhand open finger I didn’t squeeze her but I can tell you don’t pick a baby boa up like that bc she was upset for the day, I feel terrible that I got her upset. I’ll be doin it like this from now on.
what if your boa is hissing? as i picked mine up she started hissing but i continued to hold her as i thought once she knew i wasnt a threat would calm down but didnt so i put her back down in the enclosure...this is only my third time handling her...first time bit a dozen times but was relaxed for the most part, second time a day later was completely relaxed and bit me only twice as i kind of snuck up on her blind spots, fed her 3 days ago and tried to handle her today and thats where the hissing came in, now is just staring intently at me..of course ive had her less than a week but am confused as to why she would be chill one day and not the next? maybe i just disturbed her whilst she was sleeping? or food isnt completely settled?
BonelessSkull You shouldn't handle a snake within the first week of having it. You should just put it in the enclosure and let the poor thing settle down!
I'm fortunate to have a new born red tail that's very tame for being so young with my past baby red tails they did exactly what the ones in the video do and as soon as I got them out they would S up and sit still until they calm down and want to explore but my current one she is immediately calm when I get her out and doesn't S
+8-Bitten Just making sure cause thats the one i have but somehow the store that i bought it from says its a Pastel Boa. I heard there isnt anything such as "Pastel" Boa so yea
I'd consider weighing the options of these two. If it's your first snake, it's advised not to get a boa(although I did not listen), but I think they both are good snakes if you are looking. Boa's live to be around 20-30 and sometimes 40, can weigh in at 7.8 lbs(Doesn't seem like a lot but when it's 100% muscle it is) , and get around 7-10 feet whether you get a female or not. Ball pythons live to be around 20-30 years as well, but only get 3-5 feet for females, and 2-4 feet for males, and weigh in usually at four or five pounds. It's honestly what you are up for.
Kenneth Reyes Do your research first, it's extremely important. When you know that you are fully ready and know what you can know without experiences, go for it. I think a ball python is the best beginner snakes, but do your research beforehand. They're really chill, but otherwise a corn snake would be good. They're smaller and a bit faster. But those are personally, in my opinion, the best beginner snakes.
Man this is a cringey comment, I didn't even know what the snake was called, and it was in the title, LOL. I don't have snakes yet and thankfully so, my parents are terrified of a hapless garter snake.
hi my name is Matthew and I been wanting a boa im 15 years old and this is my first boa and and don't have any money and I been wanting a boa since I was in 1 first grade and my 2 dogs died and they both had cancer and I had one dog sines I was a newborn baby my mom sold her car to pay on my dog when he had Parvo and he died at 13 I was 13 when he died and I was put in camp and when I got out I heard the bad news so my mom bought my dog him and me was only a month a part so when we moved to a new house I barred his aches beind my mom back so I did not tell here and now his aches is 4 hours away at the house and we moved and now I hate my self for that his name was socks because his paws was white and now I hate my self for that
Gabriel P my friend was over and i wanted to show him feeding and I the tail fell of the rat that I was dangling by the tail which scared him to to bite at anything he saw which was my finger
All these people saying you shouldn't have to do all this you should be handling all the time or taking all your snakes out and putting them in different tanks to feed when you have a big collection its not convenient to do that with every snake you own
The first boa I ever had was a biter (not too bad, but a bit more so than usual). I thought it was so weird, and I kept asking all of these snake people if they had the same problem as I did until one day at an expo someone was like "Uhh...most of them do that when they're babies." I wanted to slap myself.
The water dish is way to small for your red tails they need to be able to soak in water. They love to bask in tub of water. Please up grade your space for your red tails
If he keeps his boss in tubs the they aren't basking at all. He has a under-bin heating source and probably soaks them when they are about to shed. Calm it down snake expert
Then ur boa its just agressive and u have to be more carefull, i think this metod isnt necesary, i just pick up my boa with my hand, just don touc his head and tail, that stressed out snakes, just be confident and grab it.
You need to hold your boa more. Do not feed it in its enclosure. Just get a big plastic tub and have a schedule for feeding and if you hold her all the time they will bond with you and knw the difference
+Suzanne Tegroen I feel really bad for your loved ones who have to deal with your bull shit on a day to day basis. after reading three of your comments I know your a I'm always right and your always wrong type of woman. I can't read any further for if I do I will be tempted to tie my shoe laces together and end my life.
+Suzanne Tegroen guess what, woman? People wouldn't bash you so much if you were, say, polite. Being a blunt bitch makes it so people don't want to listen to you. And telling everyone they're wrong also doesn't help. I don't use a feeding tub, and my snake has never struck at me even once. I haven't used a tub in over a year and he's never had any behavioral problems. He also HATES water, except to drink.

At that age you don't want to go bigger and yes It doesn't make much sense to those who don't keep reptiles ( I used to be one of them ) Too much space doesn't make them feel secure, at this age many will simply stay in their hide box most of the time.
Jazmin Stewart same, i guarantee my baby boa would bite me if i did covered his head lol i just try to grab the middle of his body with his head faced away from me
Max Bain Why not? Is the snake going to use uber or lyft app to get a ride to RatKing(burgerking) to buy a super sized meal? Are you saying snakes dont eat where they live/sleep? Would a snake snatch up a rat that roams by his/her habitat. For 17 years i have hand fed many boa's and python's and a few cali king snakes and i've never been biten but what ever works for you and as long as the snake is safe n healthy.
I always feed my snakes out side their tank. I have like 13 different type of snakes and I have 2 young red tail boa's. Their is no exuse for not feeding them out side their tanks . They are smart mine know when I get the plastic tub out they know it is feeding time and they will let me pick them up and put them in the tub and they calm down. Never feed your snake in side their inclosure
Feeding snakes inside their cage makes no difference in their attitude. Just wash your hands.. They have a Jacobson's organ for a reason. So they can pick up scent particles and take them to their brain
Yes it does make a huge difference, at this size of a snake it does not hurt if they bite and mistake your hand for food but when they are 6 ft. and you stick your hand in the enclosure to pick up it is going to hurt like hell and do damage so if you want to take a chance by all means go ahead. I do not want to take that chance with my hand
+Suzanne Tegroen my snake has no behavioral issues whatsoever, and I've tried both methods. Like you said, snakes are smart. They can smell what is food, and what is not. I accidentally touched the mouse once, and my snake hesitated to eat it. He sat there just sniffing it for a few minutes before eating it, because it has my scent on it. Snakes can tell the difference between hands and prey. It really doesn't make a difference.
this is definetly not a good way to pick up your snakes wtf is wrong with you. would you want someone shoving there hand over your whole upper body then picking you up. you must get lucky or seomthing cuz this is just asking to get bit and to the people who feed their snakes in their enclosure... that is the dumbest thing ive ever fucking heard. you wouldnt want your 9ft long boa expecting food in its tank but then its actually your hand lol wtf is wrong with people
Tyler Breen You’re a dumbass if you think feeding a snake outside of a tank works, it actually DOESNT, in fact it actually makes them more aggressive because it makes them stressed and it also makes them more likely to regurgitate...
Well, when I do the open palm strategy, I have little 11 year old hands and my little girl bites the tips of my fingers and it’s been getting annoying.
I always just get them out regularly so they're used to being handled. Except for at least 48 hours after feeding, of course. Then when I do get them out, I just take a long plastic spatula and let them smell it and nudge them a little. Just to let them know it's not feeding time. Then I just carefully pick them up. 5 years ago and still the best video to get me though the first years of my red tails!
this video is full of great information for beginner hobbyist. keep up the good work.
Love the way you are so gentle with them. Very respectful. Thank you. Subscribed.
I just had to get mine to get used to me by holding him every day and trust me it’s more scary then painful
For me I’m just worried I’m stressing her out.
Wooooooow, so with spread fingers they really do think your hand is food..... Amazing. It’s so good to understand that about boas....
Awesome method!! Thanks for sharing. And beautiful animals! 👍
Spot on! I have been using it on all my snakes for the past 9 years and only had 1 escaped Burmese python try to bite me. Well presented.
Is it just me or did I want to get bit when I first held it
Just got my first baby red tail and held her for the first time today using your method! Worked perfectly for the both of us!! So happy i came across your video!
Great video very useful.... looked for about 20 minutes and you had what I was looking for, subscribing for sure!!
Lel mine doesn't care I just reach in and grab him by the middle
Same lol. Mine is super chill, just wants to explore and smell everything when he's out of the terrarium
Same, Haha.
All boas are not created equal

How big is your boa now and is he still tame.
I wish I'd tried this when I had my royal python as she went aggressive phases, it could've potentially made cleaning the viv a lot easier!
I've had my boa for about 6 months now and she's about 10 months old, she's fine in the viv, but I put her in a separate box for feeding and every time I go to take her out, she becomes aggressive, obviously because she thinks there's more food. Keep her in her cage when you feed her
My baby boa is super friendly with me. Also, I can say. He isn't head shy at all..

Glad I stumbled upon your bid/channel. There are many but hadn't yet seen any hands on way to avoid bites without having to use hooks or other tools.
I am glad your enjoying the videos. Stay tuned, I have taken videos of individual adults and will be releasing them soon!!
ok cool cant wait!!

I woke up and LITERALLY thought about this the second I woke up
what's the minimum age to safely handle an adult male boa by yourself?
Are you Canadian?
Nice educational video. I used the same method as well on babies. I also found hook training work great too.
Yes hook training works really well. Once the babies are used to handling I will start hook training. It sure does come in handy when working with adults.

Hook training most of the time is not even needed. Especially with these. Hook training is great with baby carpet pythons though as they are more nervous than most snakes and one of the species I do not lead new keepers too. i have a baby red tail and hes so gentle
alot of people here who know nothing about snakes

We’re can I buy one like this
beautiful boas!
would you use this method on bigger sub adults and adults? I use a hook but it would be nice not to have to
What's a good site to purchase Red tails from
What kind of boa is this? Its beautiful
umar dawe Columbian or common boa constrictor
I got a red tail boa from a breeder who isn't around any more the boa is 2 feet 9 months old but it's just a hassle to feed I've tried live and frozen and he doesn't take then he takes pre killed but it's hard to get him to eat is like he lacks any instinct at all any suggestion?
He's sick
How freindly is your snake
if I wanted to get a dwarf boa such as a hogg island boa how big of a terrarium would I need for an adult?
Hogs only get 4-5 feet, so I'd say 3x2 ft minimum. But they'll love any extra space given as long as they feel secure :)
Why approach a snake from above???
My opinion is that everything from above is a thread for a snake
You kinda have to when they are in tubs or Sterilites as babies, even my baby green anacondas are unphased by me coming from above. I think it's a bigger issue when the snake is not handled on a regular basis but all my babies are handled often.
how old is the board
I want a boa. Exactly that color! What's the color and do you sell them?
Jesse F2TE that's a normal or wild boa I believe
+Jesse F2TE Just make sure that before you actually get the animal you know exactly what requirements it has regarding temperature, humidity, enclosure size, etc., and that you have everything set up before the snake arrives. In the video he says it's an anery (short for anerythristic - meaning lacking red pigment)
You no nothing about snakes it's a morph not a color also they get 6-10 feet long
I use a hook for every snake, keeps them happy and ensures I always pick them up from underneath.
Hey if you have any boas for sale please answer back?👍
Those are some beautiful boas
I would like to know more about / every thing about anery type 3
Boa’s like yeah Imma remember that hand when I’m older ho 😂😂😂
would this work with a baby retic?
Trevor Hansen yes

Can some one tell me about this 100%het Albino halb-m04 breed with sunglow jungle x mottey?
So should I not use a snake hook
I've never had to with any of my snakes and don't plan to unless it becomes necessary for my safety.
Aawwwwww she has a sideways tounge flick i love it
what kind of bedding is that?
Aspen

why are albino Boas so head shy and scary? Ive had mines for 2 yrs and still the same
man i have done this , its never failed me either man .
Love your collection looks great show us more
How much for a tamed baby boa print doesn't matter
Dds Dss about 100 Dollars but I got mine for 80
Great tips!
I draw a little mouse faces on each one of my fingers and wiggle them as I approach with my hand. They never know which one to eat, so they give up
Ummm i have a boa and i dnt hv to do all that crap.. If u handle ur snake all the time they wont thing ur food
this is for baby boas not adult boas, of course in time and constant handling, one should have no problems.
Life of Som i have a baby boa and i dont have to do that crap...fr.
I tap trained mine. Little tap with the hook on their head (barely touching) and they knew it isn’t food. Then I could just grab em.
I hate that people still use aspen as their substrate it’s insane. And such a small dish. Even for a baby boa. Smh. God bless that beautiful boa

It’s so funny my baby b BI always has an S shape at first but really gentle after but my ball python strike at me twice already lol
and I been wanting a red tail Guyana boa and jungle boa
That does in fact NOT work for all species, if fact it's not even recommended. That's a move meant only for ball pythons
Mines a few months old I have no problem.
Gabriel P me to
8-Bitten she had bitten me twice but feeding rats so
Gabriel P me to but he only bit me once
8-Bitten I should have learned the first time Lol
Gabriel P my friend was over and i wanted to show him feeding and I the tail fell of the rat that I was dangling by the tail which scared him to to bite at anything he saw which was my finger
All these people saying you shouldn't have to do all this you should be handling all the time or taking all your snakes out and putting them in different tanks to feed when you have a big collection its not convenient to do that with every snake you own
I'm fine with picking up my boy
Nice
That does seem like a good idea. Yeah... foam is the idea. Not your hand...
Please upgrade your knowledge and grammar
they have a big enough water dish trust me. & it is not a permanent situation.
Cheyenne Bower go royally fuck yourself please
If he keeps his boss in tubs the they aren't basking at all. He has a under-bin heating source and probably soaks them when they are about to shed. Calm it down snake expert
Cheyenne Bower Actually I am an expert and he needs to put larger water bowls because they like to soak in water for long periods of time.
I used your method.my boa still strike at my hand please dude help

You have him on pine bedding. That's toxic to snakes ain't it.
James Harris
This is probably aspen.
That's aspen
Thanks!
I sure hope thats not its cage
He's a breeder duh
At that age you don't want to go bigger and yes It doesn't make much sense to those who don't keep reptiles ( I used to be one of them ) Too much space doesn't make them feel secure, at this age many will simply stay in their hide box most of the time.
If I would do that to my snake she would bit me bc something is coming right at her face
Jazmin Stewart same, i guarantee my baby boa would bite me if i did covered his head lol i just try to grab the middle of his body with his head faced away from me
pretty good video not like it matters though it doesn't hurt LOL
you do not feed the snake in the same confines it sleeps.....
You don't.
It really doesn't make a difference.
where you getting your information from?
4040chocolate which person?
this is definetly not a good way to pick up your snakes wtf is wrong with you. would you want someone shoving there hand over your whole upper body then picking you up. you must get lucky or seomthing cuz this is just asking to get bit and to the people who feed their snakes in their enclosure... that is the dumbest thing ive ever fucking heard. you wouldnt want your 9ft long boa expecting food in its tank but then its actually your hand lol wtf is wrong with people
Hey man is this first snake an Anery morph?
Tyler Breen You’re a dumbass if you think feeding a snake outside of a tank works, it actually DOESNT, in fact it actually makes them more aggressive because it makes them stressed and it also makes them more likely to regurgitate...
Well, when I do the open palm strategy, I have little 11 year old hands and my little girl bites the tips of my fingers and it’s been getting annoying.
use a folded newspaper instead of your hand to cover her head, should work :)
does this technique work for other snakes? like hognose for example?
Hognose snakes dont even strike with their mouth open
Yeah Hognoses do a lot false strikeing and they are also rear fang
