Evan Kay Exotics
Приєднався 3 тра 2017
Thanks for stopping by! My name is Evan , and this is my personal channel turned into a reptile special interest channel. I am first and only a hobby keeper. I consider you my peers in a shared interest. I value the open exchange of knowledge and believe there are things to learn from all keepers. I am open to people of all types and respectful discourse. Comments make my day! Most of the content going forward will focus on my work with locality boa constrictors, true red tail boas, Argentine boas, children's pythons, and other unique reptiles. This page is now called "Evan Kay Exotics." It's original name was "A Gentleman's Operation." I've left up the old content and will occasionally put in new videos that aren't specifically about reptiles so you can see more about my life, my other animals, and my homestead. No animals are for sale on this channel. The best way to contact me and make inquiries is via email or my facebook page. I've linked both to this channel.
Hours old Newborn Guyana True Red Tail Boas BCC: pulling their umbilical cords
Here's a quick video of babies soon after they got removed from the birth cage. They are probably 12 hours old. They are pulling free of their umbilical cords. In about a week, they will shed and I will separate them into individual bins and attempt to feed them.

I keep my boas humidity at about 80 percent and ill leave some moss in the corner by the cold hide just to make aure it stays up and i always get perfect sheds for years
Do you have any bco?
I have a number of them in my private collection. If you search my youtube channel, you'll see them. I'm pairing two maxx pink BCO's this season. I might have babies available fall 2025.
All great items! 🐍💚
Good to hear from you, Honey.
Such a great video! You should set up an Amazon affiliate link cuz I will buy each of the things you mention in this video. If I was using your link and I assume others would as well that’s some more money for the snakes! What is the electrical tape used for? Thanks
I use it mostly for securing thermostat probes, but it's handy for lots of things.
Would you be able to make a video about handling the children python babies please? When to not handle is it 24hours before feeding and 48hours after? Is it ok to hold them daily? How long is too long? At what age or weight are they becoming less fragile.? Or is it by age or weight? thank you
That's a good idea. I'll see what I can do.
Hate to break this to ya Evan, but as a retired teacher I can tell you that if the students are driving you batty now, in October, ... .. . just wait till the months following Christmas break! Agree with everything said. Very much disagree with your friend's statement re humidity; in fact I'd say it's the most underrated aspect of snake keeping. Everybody seems to understand temperature gradients but very few understand humidity gradients - which you discuss and depict accurately. I'll add that in the case of enclosures that have dripping glass to the point of condensation pooling below: all reptiles, even Nerodia, should always have access to a dry surface area they should never be forced to rest atop moisture. And to those guys that like their humidity on the high side: you better have impeccable hygiene in there. Check for scat/urine/urate at least 1x daily don't think you're gonna do weekly checks and get away with an RI free reptile room (RI's spread FAST). Good on ya for keeping the vids Raw/Unadulterated; keep ‘em coming 200 more subscribers to reach 1,000!
Thanks, Joal. I wish every teacher a fantastic retirement. The kids are still fun. I think I'm just getting old and it's hard on my body. The hygiene comments are on point when people try to get super wet cages. I like to contain my humidity more in humid hide boxes and microenvironments. This was a good comment. Thanks for watching.
great video Evan !
More to come, Blessed!
I agree with your outlook on working with localities. Id be more inclined to start line breeding based on wild caught traits than having to keep up with a newest morph and having a inferiority complex 😅
Good to hear from you, Grant. Yes, morphs can feel like keeping up with the neighbors.
Great perspectives! Thanks for sharing them. 🍻
Thanks for watching, Adamer.
Keep up the great work, Evan. I’m really enjoying the content!
I'm glad you like it.
And do those isopods drink up the urine? Urine absorbed into bedding + humidity = RI's. Be careful.
Thanks for watching, Joal. Yes, urine/ammonia causes problems. The isopods do help with hygiene and I can go longer without changing the substrate that without them. I don't think they eat urine. I think most of the urine control comes from the healthy decomposition that happens between nirtogen (urine) and the carbon (substrate). But, this is not bioactive and I do have to clean/change substrate. I think the most important things for controlling ammonia/urine is ventilation and not overwetting/aerating your substrates.
Great video Evan.
Thanks for watching, Salmon.
Cool snake! And thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Bolivian boa constrictor, I might even consider getting one
Thanks for watching, Geeky. I really should keep more Bolivians. They are pretty ideal locality pet boas.
I don’t get perfect sheds. Humidity is good but I feel like the coconut husk bedding tears the sheds.
Hmmm...have you tried adding a humid hide box? It's not so much a big deal if they shed in one piece as it is that they shed completely and easily. Thanks for watching Ryan. Oshimura? You must be Japanese. I am half. cool.
what would you recommend as first boa locality wise? I really like the suriname ones.
I generally recommend Peruvian Long tails as the easiest/small/gentlest boas I've ever kept. These Bolivians would be good if you wanted something medium sized and a little more demanding. I also like Dumeril's and some of the imperator boas for beginners. I generally don't recommend full size boas as first boas. The True Red Tails- Surinames, Guyanas, etc- are truly the biggest and most nervous boas and they are the most fragile. An Argentine is a better choice as a full size pet boa: generally calmer and more hardy.
What size cages are those? 48x30?
Hi, they're 72x30.
Do you put that “humid hide” on the warm or cool side? Also, is it always in there, or just for gravid females?
Good questions. I keep humid hide boxes in with all my snakes all the time. It is a buffer against too low of humidity and means they always have high humidity when they need it. The only exception is when I believe the female is close to giving birth. I will remove the box. The concern is that she'll give birth in the box and accidentally crush the babies. I put lots of crumled paper and boxes in the cage instead. I put them on the warm side. The top is closest to the heater, so the humid hide box doubles as both a warm/wet retreat and also a hot basking platform. I keep humid hide boxes on the cool side in some of my snakes cages.

You make me blush. I am a married man.
congrats on 750 subscribers ! i’d love to see a feeding video with all your boas !
Thanks, my friend. I tend not to just do feeding videos because it's not what I want the channel to focus on. But, is there something specific you'd like to see that I can make educational? If you pay attention to the backdrop, the two snakes in this video are eating rabbits while I am talking.
Looks nice, does the socket not get hot? that is my only worry :)
Good question, Roel. You need to make sure you use a porcelain socket and control your bulb on a thermostat. I've used up to 100 watt bulbs like this no problems. When you use a bulb inside a cage, you can use about half the wattage as a bulb on top of the cage because the heat is all inside the cage. I suppose an extremely high wattage bulb might get too hot. I've never noticed it on pvc, but over time, heat can make acrylic brittle/yellow. You can use strips of aluminium foil tape as a heat reflector/shield if you are worried about that.
I hope this isn't a dumb question - but the bulb won't be hot enough to melt the PVC? I am thinking about a PVC cage setup with a halogen bulb on the inside.
Not dumb. It's wise to think about those safety things. Thanks for watching, Theo.
I think you are touching on something that is shifting in keeping snakes. Moving from tips and tricks to really understanding the motives and needs of the animals and troubleshooting the situation-manipulating the environment for the animal to solve the issue. You’re still giving a “trick”-but it’s “because of” something instinctive or psychological about the animal that has been studied and understood now. It’s good that we aren’t dancing like BF Skinner’s pigeons anymore. Good stuff as usual! Thanks for the info and ideas!
Thanks, John. What you said is exactly what I am trying to do. I don't like giving "recipes". I like giving concepts.
I was so confused watching your new video this morning. I had no idea who Evan was and why he sounded like you 😂 I had to ‘go to your channel’ 😔 😂 Following on FB now. Thanks for all the good info! *and the safe space 💚
LOL...sorry for the curveball...Thanks for watching, Honey.
What are the names of those cages ?
The yellow ones are old neodesha slant front cages. They're probably 25+ years old and the company isn't around anymore. They're some of my favorites. The grey ones are vision cages. Thanks for watching, Abel.
@@EvanKayExotics awesome thnks for letting me know i also think they are nice for being an older model cage.
They are the best in terms of viewing your animals because of the slant front. The also have a lot of floor surface area. They are getting harder and harder to find, but I scoop them whenever I can. If you find them, just make sure they aren't brittle. The plastic they used tended to get brittle in the sun or heat. They also have a better balance of ventliation than modern cages. PVC cages are underventilated, and I order mine with double ventilation.
You’re as whimsical as ever my friend! Love this! Newly subscribed
Thanks, Joe. Whimsical is a ncie compliment.
Giving the Dumeril's some vitamin D - awesome!

Me too. Thanks James.
You can actually do outdoor enclosures for boas in Florida
That would e ideal.
I have a Columbian boa I'm going to breed I'm new to breeding but they is not a real size difference between a BI and BCC because I seen Columbia boas 12ft
Thanks for watching, Jake. Yes, BI boas can have the same size potential as a BCC. The BI from Colombia in particular are large. 12 foot is exceptionally large for either BI or BCC.
@@EvanKayExotics I want a bcc female . As I do have the biggest out of the bi the Colombian boa . There not much of a size difference between the two . I just want the most easier BCC I can find
@@EvanKayExotics I seen some Columbian boas really huge and I seen huge true red tails and not much of a difference side by side.
Yes. The size potential of full size BI and BC is similar.
How I have my new baby boa set is all credited towards watching your videos so I greatly appreciate your channel. I ended up buying uni-grow tree moss but i noticed how dusty is was and my little guy seems to avoid sitting in it. However, I didn’t wash it prior and would jump straight into heavily misting. I suppose that’d make all the distance in the world considering you wash yours beforehand?
Hey Grant, Thanks for watching. I've not used tree moss before. There are a lot of different mosses available. Some of them are dyed bright green. You can try washing it. Otherwise, look for some of this sphagnum moss. It's really the best I've found.
@@EvanKayExotics I appreciate the input. Found what you were talking about on Amazon. I’ll try it!
Love the more frequent content lately dude. Dumeril's Boa, Woma Python, and Ball Python keeper here. 😃👍
Sweet. Great species. I've got a few Dum's. I should do a video on them. Their care is similar to Argentines. I want to keep womas.
This vid made me feel way better about getting a Peruvian 🤣 I’ve been stresssssing
Thanks for watching, Miles. They are amazing animals. So long as you are careful to set them up right, there isn't a need to stress.
Nothing short of incredible. That maxx pink line has been a dream snake for years. Amazing bud 🍻
Love those, and all the Antaresia.
Me too! Thanks for watching.
I thought you were gonna play fetch with them or something😅
They will fetch your fingers on occasion.
And you bring up good points like the fact about the animals not having a down season because they are continually living. It is a rewarding hobby but it does require attention and care.
It's a grind and it's not glamorous.
Yes, nice setup and care process. Thoughtful. And nice to see the real side of the day to day care
Thanks for watching, Ralph!
Thank you for sharing your boa breeding knowledge with us 🐍 keep up the good work!
Thanks, Blindkeeper. I've got some exciting things coming.
I turned my notifications off for a while on here, but I’m very happy to find out that I am clearly behind. Thanks for all the videos and great info as always. lovin it! 🤝🏼
Welcome back, Justin!
Release the kraken!!! The document will work too, though. 💁🏻😉 All of the new fresh reptile companies that people start up overnight these days to sell their wild caught animals on morphmarket sure love selling unknown mutts for top dollar. It just shows you where the hobby is headed and how much buying directly from species specific breeders is the ONLY way to buy true red tails. Argentines are right there with them too, unfortunately. Ancient reproductions is a great example of selectively bred true locality boas, with all of the history and information behind their animals as well. You get what you pay for with bcc, bco and bcl.
I'll release the document when I get 11 more subscribers! Bob and Ancient Reproduction is top notch. He has guided alot of my keeping. You should check out his youtube page. He's got the best info out there. I am pairing some Maxx Pink Argentines this year that are direct from Bob.
@@EvanKayExotics i had no idea he had a page, thank you 🙏🏼 subscribe people! 🍻
Interesting to see how it pans out, good luck and thanks for sharing your knowledge and boas with us!
Thanks, Wilnoth. I am interested to see myself.
snake room already looking amazing happy for you brother !
Much appreciated. Thanks, Blessed.
I am a rare plant collector turned serpent enthusiast that has recently become the proud mother of a rescued very emaciated BCI. I’m learning so much every single day about this girl and I wanted to thank you for the great information. This ⬆️ is such good information and explained precisely. I teach classes at a botanical garden on Anthurium care and I might just have to play this during my next class. Good stuff.
Wow, cool. I am an educator by trade, so this is a nice compliment. I love plants. Plants and reptiles have very complementary skill sets. I used to raise cymbidium orchids at a semi large scale when I was a younger person in California. Thanks for taking on the boa rescue. The most satisfy relationships I've had with animals were hard earned, and I'm sure the snake will pay off for you in the long run. They really do understand and appreciate good care and the people that give it to them.
great video !
Thanks so much for watching.
@@EvanKayExoticshey man can we get a video on preparing for the winter or power outages? Would appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Thanks.
That's an excellent idea, lastblood!
Hey evan! Im a binge watcher of your channel, can you do a video showing how to identify male vs female boa?
That's a good idea. I'm happy to make a video about how I'm not very good at sexing boas LOL. There are a lot of things I don't know how to do well in this hobby.
@agentlemansoperation3821 hahahaha man I feel you. I have 4 I know the sex of 3 for sure but I have one that just seems to baffle me now matter how much I compare. Still I value your opinion
Beautiful facility my friend, so clean and perfect, excellent video and topic!!!
Thanks, Josh. I'm just a hobby keeper in my own home. I work everyday towards trying to create the collection of my childhood dreams.
What would you think about ASF for Boas? I breed asf, mice and rsts and have all 3 available but i prefer asf for my ball pythons. I have been told they are a higher protein lower fat rodent.
Thanks for watching, Unicorn. I think that they are good food, but not better or worse than mice or rats...My only really big preference is to feed something that is fully furred and not nursing. Some boas seem not to do well on furless/nursing rodents.
