What is The Amp? First and foremost, it’s a Guitar amplifier. The preamp is based around a single 12AX7 running at high voltage in a discrete Class A circuit. The tube preamp reacts with a guitar the same way any tube amplifier does: it generates harmonics and the sweet sounding high fidelity tone that tubes are known for. Along with tube EQ. there is on-board reverb, tremolo on The Amp 50 and a FET Boost on The Amp 100 so that The Amp can be used as a portable amplifier. Foot switches for bypassing the effects are built in. The Amp can be used a variety of ways and all of them are great!

Been waiting for a proper review on these. Love the reverb and trem
totally. sounds wonderful!

The headstock on that Alice is perfection. Just lovely. Headstocks can make or break a guitar and this one freaking nails it. 😍
Also, that tremolo on the 50 is so very nice, I just wish the 100 had it.
This is everything I wanted to see out of a demo for these two. I think the 50 is probably more my speed but they both sound great!
yeah, i like to fight the preamp a bit myself.
I'd been on the fence for a while with the 50 but this video sold it for me. Nice work.
Great comparison, thanks for that! Sounds awesome.
Color me impressed! Great vid brotha. Gonna add these to my gear watch list. 🧐
If touring were still a thing, I’d think about tossing one of these on the end of my big pedalboard in case my amp ever craps out. Beats carrying another combo (though previously I’d run in stereo, so if one crapped I’d just roll w/one). Maybe one day shows will return....one day. Anyways, love you brother, hope you’re holding up well. Miss youuuuuuuu
I have the 50 and it's exceeded my expectations. Fantastic for at home use or as part of a grab and go rig. A great piece of gear. I highly recommend it.
Any insights into the clean headroom on the 50? I'd think it would be plenty for me (Deluxe Reverb is more than enough for my needs) but here it seemed to break up pretty quick. Thanks!
@@maz109 I think it’s the celestion speakers in the cabinet contributing to the breakup and the amp setting with the volume high and the master low.
I have the 50 and mostly play it through headphones. Sometimes with and sometimes without cab simulation. I’ve learned You can dial in clean or more driven tones.
I don’t understand everything super well and I’m not an expert but it has some flexibility.
Got the 50, can confirm the quality. It sounds great, can't beat the on-board options, & still pushes my cabinet just as much as any other amp. Can't recommend it enough!
heck yeah!
how does it do with high gain pedals?
@@benjihollister the heaviest I've put on it have been the JHS series bonsai, muff, & rats, & it does just fine. I like to add a little compression as well to so that volumes are a little less squirrelly. I should find a plexi style pedal one of these days to see how it does with it. I run the Milkman into a barefaced 212v & it's smokin'!
@jwstout007
I’ve wanted to ask someone who has a barefaced about those cabs with a milkman.
It’s a year after your comment here.
Do you still feel the same?
I’m only the Rythym player in my band ( and the singer), and i’m wanting to simplify my set up.
Something easier to get on/off stage as we currently are only the opener/support for better known bands at pub gigs and also something that takes up less space in the car/van when on the road. But I don’t want to loose any sound/feel from my current set up, as heavy as it is.
On top of “ do you feel the same about the amp/cab a year later?” Does it take pedals well?
There’s only one person I know of in Australia with a barefaced but it’s a bass cab hence why I’m asking these questions to help me sort out what way to go… I’m ultimately after a good clean amp to use my phase with and also the blues boy overdrive.
Thanks
@@ZarzTV I haven't been using the 50 recently (only due to it's size, I'm keeping my pedal board down to carry on luggage size) but it handled both my 110 & 212 barefaced cabinets like a champ.
I'd recommend a compressor just before the amp to give it a little more "sag" quality as it felt a bit spiky with it's 50w headroom when I ran it clean.
Nice one!
Sound nice. Do they use the same trem and reverb circuit as their f-stop box?
Both sound great! Just curious, how they compare with Creamer in sonic aspect?
Hey, for the direct portion of this video, did you do any editing in your DAW (EQ, compression, etc)? Total beginner to recording and just curious how simple this is…. Thanks!
there’s some very light transparent mastering on the entire thing just to even out levels, but otherwise, yeah i just went straight in and didn’t touch a thing!
Looking to get that " Pristine " Fender Blackface Clean - straight-to-the P.A. - Iridium, ACS1, Quilter or Simplifier ? Nice demo, but I did not care for either-of these units.
Looking for something to pair with my hx effects. Thoughts on running the 100 watt version with that?
i think that would be a solid idea!
How would the two fare as pedal platform for bedroom use with a 12" speaker cab? Is the 50w headroom too low for a pedal platform with single coils?
i think either would be fine, but i really feel the 100 is more satisfying for time based effects, modulation, etc. and would recommend it over the 50.
This is the best review of these products out there. I have one question though.. How is your speaker cab wired? From what I have read, these amps have different wattage depending on the ohm rating of your cab. I love the idea of having the tremolo, so I am thinking about the amp 50 and running it through my 4ohm cab (2 10" speakers), but I don't want to find out later that I don't have enough headroom to use it on a gig. (I am a guitarist for hire in Austin and I play jazz, blues, country... roots stuff, so it's not like I need a Marshall and a 4 X 12) What do you think?
The reverb was much higher on the Amp 100 when comparing the overdrive sound. The Timmy sounded smoother on the 100 but because of the space of the reverb, it was less in your face so I couldn't make a good comparison
I had a 50 for a quick minute. I couldn't get it to sound anything but tin-y through headphones or I would have kept it. Wanted something "tiny" for practicing out and about. Probably user error, lol, but I don't have that problem with the Iridium I have now.
i think the key is having IR options to match what you'd like to get out of it. so, an AMP50 into your iridium would probably be heavenly.
Same, I love my 50 into a cab but through headphones it sounds horrible.
Both are very cool, but I'd have to take the 50. More breakup, plus you get that great tremolo...
definitely! you and i are on the same page there.
You didn’t mention that they can change watt output with different ohm cabinets. That’s one of the best parts.
Live playing on stage with other musicians sadly continues to decline in favor of solo home recording. This trend, space limitations and studio volumes have fostered-in new gear to meet these needs.
Nothing replaces a good tube amp head into a 4X12, except maybe two of them in stereo ( - :
Well, there is a pandemic going on. In a year or two people will be jamming together more again
How is an amp a solution for the ampless rig?
They need to make a stereo version of these two fantastic amps.
AGREE!
And they now have it!
I’m confused a bit by this. I actually have an Amp 100 and I love it and agree on the loud clean tones. I was under the impression that they had the same pre-amp, and that the wattage difference was just a more powerful Class D amp.
Does the solid state amp add distortion? Otherwise how would the 50 break up sooner? Or is the preamp ‘voiced’ like a smaller tube amp might break up?
Either way, great to see these side by side and I could hear the difference.
talked to tim to verify and the preamps are actually different between the two models!
@@DemosInTheDark Thanks for checking. That makes total sense. Glad I waited for the 100W to come out - need those massive cleans.
What cabinets/speakers were you using for this demo?
it's a semi open 2x12 with alnico creambacks
@@DemosInTheDark Thank you. It sounds great. I have the original Amp, but I was thinking of upgrading to the 100 for more power. What do you think for gigging? Amp Combo vs. Amp 50 Pedal with External Cab vs. Amp 100 pedal with External Cab?
@@johnott193 hmm. what kind of music do you play? do you like the sound of the preamp on the 50? the preamps are actually different between the 50 & 100. i typically recommend the 100 over the 50 if you're looking for more headroom and are a big pedal player. but if you're out there making rock music, i'd stick with the 50. just my two cents!
@@DemosInTheDark yeah we’re playing alternative rock, mostly clean with a little overdrive. I was leaning towards the 100.
that makes sense. the extra headroom will go a long way AND you can overpower that pesky drummer.
this is direct into an interface? sounds really good!
some of it is. i note when it’s direct and when it’s through a cabinet!
@@DemosInTheDark can you help me when it is through an interface?
I really think you missed how a master volume works on these, turn the master all the way up to get the cleanest sound then set your level with the input, that will get you the cleanest sound
sure, i glossed over that, eric. when i'm trying to condense a lot of info (especially on two units like this) i have to try to cut to what i think is the "meat and potatoes" of the product(s). you're spot on though, my friend!
Yeah that is what I was hoping to hear as I watch now…if the 50w at 8 ohms has at least the same clean headroom as say a Pro Reverb or Bandmaster. Nice vid tho!
@@imanalien2222 The Bandmaster reverb has a SS rectifier and will have more head room then a Pro with a Tube Rectifier
@@shckltnebay nope the sf bandmaster Reverb uses glass too. I was just comparing these 40w amps to the 50w supplied by the Milkman re headroom. The answer is that 50w of SS will not be as loud as tubes at a simliar wattage.
@@imanalien2222 Oh yeah I was thinking of the earlier BM, but to me the BMR is louder then the pro I had but ive only had one, I have 10 or so tube amps, been collecting and working on amps for some time, I know about SS vs tube vol
Did you have The Amp(s) before your pedals, or afterwards (eg, traditional)?
I ask, because you have it written on-screen that it was Milkman/pedal/cabinet ... and, that's not how the chain would be if one were to use a combo, for example.
If this is the case, you're kinda doing us a disservice. Wouldn't it be? Don't you think? I don't want to judge, so please clear me up.
But, maybe it was just a clerical error (?).
just a clerical error. it would've been pedal-milkman-cab. apologies for the confusion.
No worries. I apologize for seeming so judgemental. I just needed to know what I was listening to.
Thanks for getting back to me so fast, clearing up my question, and for the excellent video.
Nice demo. It is literally impossible to use a product called “the amp” in an “amp-less” rig, though.
literally. 😂
I have the 100 & I use it through a fender twin style cab. I’m not a massive fan of the boost or diming the volume as is it sounds too fizzy to my ears. However I use a Klon>TS10>Bluesbreaker and its glorious. The reverb is spectacular too in the 100. I’ve used it with headphones & direct into a DAW with Super reverb, Twin & Vibroverb style IRs. Highly recommended for the at home player or light rig user.
Just my 2cents
perfect! thanks for chiming in. that’s pretty much what i was thinking!
1:00 yup my rig is ampless
Too many um’s and uh’s but a good review none the less🙌🏽
side effect of going unscripted, which i prefer to giving an infomercial.
@@DemosInTheDark way worth it! Thanks again!
Don't get me wrong. He's a nice guy, I like him just fine... but he's a name dropper.
who?
Why is it so dark? Lol!
