You probably know this already, but "Escha & Logy" is a pretty incredible pun. In Japanese, the word for "and" is "to". This makes the Japanese version "Escha to Logy". The word "Eschatology" is the aspect of theology concerned with what happens to a person once they die. Fun stuff!

Absolutely agree with Escha and Logy. It wasn't the first one I played, but I really liked the way they implemented the exploration system as well as the wonderful interactions between the two principle characters. Logy is a BOSS, too. Definitely one of my favorite protagonists. Also, that opening theme song is so addictive. Took weeks to get it out of my head after I first heard it.

hey, i just want to say thank you for helping me finally jump into the atelier series with your first video on it. i picked up lydie and suelle back in december, and i'm finding it really fun! while i'd seen the atelier games floating around, i'd felt a little overwhelmed about getting into them because i didn't know where to start, but thanks to your video, i was able to finally jump in without distress.
this list is really good, by the way! i really wanna give the dusk trilogy a try, though console limitations are preventing me. i hope they put them on steam like they did with the arland games.

I always love seeing top lists for Atelier because every list is so different!
My personal favorite is Ayesha! It has just the right amount of melancholy and sweetness. I loved exploring the world, was excited about how many different battle themes it had, adored the entire cast and their interactions... My other faves are Meruru (I enjoyed the town building aspects) and Rorona Plus (my introduction to the series & I honestly liked the time limits). I'm currently playing Shallie and hoping I'll end up liking it as much as I did Ayesha.

I bought it when it was on special and expected noting special of it and then Logy's intro scene happened with the fire and all that and I was immediately in love. Oh my I'm so glad Firis made it to your top 5.
Firis is my favorite protagonist from all atelier series and has the best BGM imo. She is super duper cute and i totally relate to her as I am now seeking for a freedom from something in my life. (Totally can relate to Liane too as I'm also an onee-san and would totally want to have an imouto-chan like Firis - My Imouto-chan acts more like a Puni than Firis!)
Seriously though, Firis is so underrated. The Alchemy is fun and they gotta play it in Despair Difficulty and see how much fun it is to create the perfect items / equipments on your own while traveling. People need to give her game a chance!
Then when people ask me which Atelier Game I like most, I wouldn't know which one is my favorite as I learn to accept system the way it is and just find a way to make the perfect items / weapon out of that system. But i do feel the sadness when my game is limited in time. I just prefer the endless one or the one that give me choice for when i want to start my New game+
I'm currently playing Nelke and The Legendary Alchemist after finishing Atelier Lulua. Nelke is very challenging and I have to do so much Trial and Error in it. Lulua is the old-school Atelier, cute and fun too. Heck, I love all the Atelier Series! I want more! Waiting for Atelier Ryza!

I really enjoy hearing your honest opinions on your favorite games. (^:
Though my list is probably a little different, based on my personal experiences, I think this is a good list.
(Then again, I can't think of a *bad* list. All of the Atelier games are really distinct and anyone can have any number of reasons to own the list that they do!)
But could Atelier Lulua possibly find a way to sneak itself up in that list next year, I wonderr~? c:

  • @novalisk
    @novalisk 5 років тому +3

One for Lydie and Suelle here.
It had the perfect balance of interesting and touching story (if you went for the true end), time limit not binding you at lategame, so letting you to explore the world freely - the painting worlds that were by far the most unique "gathering regions" in the franchise, and incredibly cozy interactions with the previous characters of the trilogy.
And the alchemy was very polished and enjoyable, if you wanted to get hardcore into synthesizing, which I was always looking foward to ever since the material placement was introduced.
Oh yes, I usually like the shy/meek type characters the most, but it was Suelle I fell for in this title, though I liked Lydie too.
I felt like Lydie shared quite a similar personality with Totori, and Suelle with Meruru.

the way I got into atelier was pretty simple, got my ps3 and thought I need a jrpg, quick amazon search and saw Atelier Totori's cover, loved the cover art and didn't search any further, best blind purchase I ever made for a game, while I agree dusk saga is pretty solid, I have bias towards Arland, mostly cause I love the cast, specially Rorona, so you can bet I am excited af for Atelier Lulua

Escha and Logy is also my favorite in the series (I got started with Rorona Plus on the Vita). In fact I loved the music so much that I imported the instrumental soundtrack from Japan (there's a vocal soundtrack as well). Not that I didn't like the music in the other games, but Escha and Logy's really stood out for me. Really looking forward to Atelier Lulua, while I'm waiting for reviews before deciding whether to wait or not for Nelke, since it's more a spinoff game. Speaking of spinoff games, one that's often overlooked in discussion of the Atelier series, though it was released in English, was Atelier Annie on the Nintendo DS. Started playing it -- it's cute, but it's really closer to the early titles of the series rather than the later releases starting with Rorona.

Rorona was the first Atelier I played that had a time limit, and for me, it was very easy. I had lots of extra time in each section of the game and spend a lot of the in-game days just doing whatever I wanted.
However, I found Totori to be MUCH more difficult to manage. I actually got the bad ending because I wasn't strong enough and didn't have the proper equipment to fight the final boss. I definitely plan on replaying it because I really liked the story.

Atelier Iris 3 wasn't just my first ever Atelier game, but also my very first video game ever. I bought it with my own money and I sunk so many hours into it because of how much I loved the characters, the world and especially the alchemy system.
I can look back at it and recognize quite a few flaws in it now, but I honestly think a lot of the things I now consider to be really restrictive, might just have been what grounded me enough to finish the game back in my childhood. And even now after replaying it recently, it's still as charming as ever with its world and character building. I think it's probably always going to be my favorite.
Eternal Mana didn't hit the same for me, but it was still good, and unfortunately a lot of the other older titles weren't my favorite either, but the newer entries brought back those incredible character building and world building moments with full force.
The Arland series definitely frustrated me a lot, but I did enjoy the concepts behind it, and a lot of the characters are so charming in their own ways that despite my general dislike for the game itself, I still adore the characters in it.
The Dusk trilogy, however, just....blew me away. The characters are all so quirky and unique, but even characters that I thought I would dislike due to their personalities became so loveable and I found myself rooting for all of them. Each entry just has so much heart in it. And what I missed in the Arland trilogy - a real, impactful story - is done so well here with the subtle storytelling of this doomed world, and the people still trying their best to live on happily despite it.
God, I love the dusk trilogy so much.
Replaying Dusk during the quarantine atm, and honestly I'm so happy to be going through this world again. As soon as I finish up with dusk, I'm starting my first ever playthrough of the Mysterious trilogy. I look forward to it so much!

Personally, the Dusk trilogy is just the best Atelier collection ever. Each game has its own plot and main idea, but the best part about it is that it connects all three together by advancing through the trilogy! Literally, connecting these three together, you get one of the best JRPGs ever. The main problem with Atelier Dusk series are frame drops. On PS VITA, it just happens a lot, so is on Switch - It is clearly seen in Shallie and Ayesha. The music, especially in Shallie, is relaxing in atelier, heroic in combat, suitable for secondary characters. But it sometimes is just too repetitive, Shallie fixed this issue by adding 3 battle themes advancing the game.
The combat is just refreshing and the bosses usually take skill to be beaten, especially in Atelier Escha & Logy. In Atelier Shallie, it looked promising, yet I didn't really like some character battle animations, but you know - it is fine.
I give Atelier Ayesha 8.5/10, Escha and Logy 9/10 and Shallie 8.8/10, needs to FIX FRAMERATE DROPS and I will put each game extra 0.5

In the end i wanna thank you for your great content and for really getting me in the atelier series!

I'm just getting into the series now, and happen to be around 22 hours into Escha & Logy atm, LOL! The main reason I took so long to try the series is because I thought the time limits would stress me out, but they're actually doing a good job of forcing me to prioritize and not just fool around for hours on end, so it's pretty interesting! I loved Ayesha (my first full Atelier game) and so far Escha & Logy has been nearly as good (I prefer Ayesha's story, so far, and the fact it had multiple towns you went between was pretty cool.)

Based on your past video, I didn't expect "Escha & Logy" to be top 1 instead of one of the more "adventure-like" games. Still, it was a real amusing surprise!
The animation of "Esch and Logy" was what first got me interested in Atelier, but never really went into playing the games due to having no idea where to begin playing. That is, until I saw your past video explaining the good points of all Atelier games which gave me the courage to "blindly" buy the Arland Trilogy for the switch.
At first Rorona felt too easy and overly simple. Then you get to Year 2 where the game begins unlocking all sorts of facilities and combat gets harder. I'm actually writing this after finally having beat the dam "Electric (boogaloo) Wailmer" after 8 tries. Simply put, the game begins slow yet grows on you.
What I'm trying to say is, THANK YOU a lot for your videos!!!
Note: I hope they port more Atelier to Switch so I can play them more in my spare time at work :)

I kind of enjoy the Atelier series, it isn't my favorite but I've still played almost ALL of them because I love the atmosphere. I never gave the Dusk series a shot because I was busy and broke when they were originally out. You've convinced me to go back and play them. Thanks!

Love your list! I share pretty much the same sentiments you mentioned throughout. Love how you're covering the Atelier games and getting more people into the series.
And was surprised to see how well Atelier ran on the switch from the gameplay you showed. Here's hoping they port the Dusk Trilogy to switch as it's my favorite trilogy :')

This is mind blowing because I didn't know that Mana Khemia is a part of this whole franchise. Mana Khemia 1 & 2 are some of my most favourite game on PS2.
That settles it. I'm gonna sink myself in this series through and through. Thank you so much for talking about this. ❤

glad that you made another video about the atelier series cos i still can't decide which arc i could buy and play cos the ones take tickle my fancy are the ones that's like in the middle or end of arc. so i ended up trying trails of cold steel series for the time being.

I really love the trilogy aspect of the games, especially when I experience it in the Arland trilogy, which isn't anymore. It is really enjoyable to see the characters growing up and how they changed over time. Seeing Totori becoming the master of Meruru in Atelier Meruru is really enjoyable. We see how much Totori grew up after her adventures in her own game and especially what kind of Alchemist master she is.
What I love the most about Atelier Meruru is how the master/student relationship is much stronger and focused than the two previous ones.

I have only played escha&logy of these and that was a few years ago, but i really enjoyed the game. The characters were distinct and fun and the collecting/crafting system was statisfying. Also the battle system was fun to play.

Escha and Logy was my introduction to the series, but the combat system somehow felt oddly complicated, so i stopped. A couple years later i jumped back into the series with Rorona and beat it pretty quickly, which i find funny cause Rorona apparently has the most strict time mechanic. I'm a fan of the series to this day.

    My experience of the series:
Introduction: Knowing who Gust is in the Neptunia series.
First gameplay seen: My brother tried playing Sophie for a few minutes before dropping the game entirely.
First "full" exposure: A YT Let's play channel that I watch for Neptunia playthroughs playing Atelier Firis when it came out.
First Atelier that I willingly looked at instead of being recommended to: The Atelier Escha & Logy anime
First Atelier played: Atelier Lydie & Suelle, because of the aforementioned channel said that they were turned off by the dropping of the dubbing, as well as me wanting to try playing one myself.
First Atelier game to be dropped and never plan on going back: Atelier Annie
First legit and physical game that I actually bought by my own: Atelier Ayesha
First Atelier where I felt the time limit so hard: Atelier Rorona DX (only at the last assignment and overtime, the rest was fine sailing)
First Atelier where I am desperately trying to find a cheaper physical copy of, instead of buying the $40 digital version (still deciding if I should go with the digital option since it feels like it wouldn't go on sale anytime): Atelier Escha & Logy
This all happened within less than a year. This is probably the first series where, in less than year, I had so much experience and now I felt closer to the series.

Funnily enough, Escha and Logi was my first exposure to the Atelier series... But it was the anime. While the anime wasn't the best, I had a chat with someone over the anime who had played the games before and I got interested. Sadly, though, I didn't have a console to play them. Fast forward a few years, I finished Sophie and Firis and aiming to 100% them (or at least beat the optional bosses). I've also picked up the Arland series due to the sale for the port on PC.
You can't have enough cute anime girls.

I need to give this series another shot lol. I own three of the games, but haven’t played hardly any. I first picked it up because it looked cute, because it was super niche, and because it reminded me of the Tales series, which I’m a huge fan of. I did a tad bit of research before settling on Totori as my first, but I doubt I played more than 2 hours before getting distracted. I bought Sophie when that came out, attempting to give the series another shot and because I thought Sophie and Plachta were SUPER cute. I’ve played by far the most of that, but it wasn’t more than 10 hours, I don’t think. I later bought Escha & Logy because the artwork looked awesome, but I’ve never opened the box.
I think I need to watch your other video on the Atelier games xD

I have been interested in this series for a while but due to lack of localization and being limited to consoles I wasn't able to try any of the "classic" ateliers, only Atelier Annie (which is a minimalistic entry in the series) and Mana Khemia 2 (which is more of a RPG with very simple alchemy, also no time limits).
I tried Firis but I felt like it wastes the player's time in some ways, might return to it one day though.
I then tried Lydie and Suelle and felt it was mediocre in every way, yet there is a strange charm that makes me not want to drop it. It might grow on me yet.
And now tons of older games in the series have been ported to PC and translated, and there's a new one as well which is said to be really good... suddenly all these new options popped up =)

Hello, Sophie I'm so happy that you introduced so many people to the Atelier series with your videos and I'm a huge fan of your overhaul work (thank you for introduced me to my second favorite video game franchise Drakengard/Nier). I would like to help you making your video more accesible in a certain way so I'm finally asking, could I translate your video in french (like making french subtitles) ? I saw that we can't add subtitles so I suppose that you would prefer to check if the translation is accurate or something like that.

I love the Atelier series. My first was Meruru which I got for my birthday but didn’t play it much, I had trouble getting into it. I bought Ayesha when it released and actually finished it. Meruru was kind of my gateway, but I didn’t get cemented as a fan til Ayesha. Escha and Logy is still my favorite with Ayesha being right behind.
