Subbed to your dad's Instagram a couple of weeks ago actually! Thanks so much for this informative video. I love your dad - such an awesome guy. Your whole family is awesome and after binge watching many of your vlogs I feel I know you all!! So happy that you got the jaw surgery you so desperately needed to have done. Glad that the Palm Springs house worked out in the long run. We just did a major kitchen reno and I feel your pain! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your whole family!!
I really enjoyed the honesty of this video. I married to a teacher in King county and we've been fortunate enough to make good financial decisions similar to your dad's. I wish this video was longer. I think the military benefits can't be ignored. That can really set a family up for success long-term. I would love to see more of your dad in videos
This is one of my favorite videos I've seen in a while! It is super interesting to hear about someone's financial experience, especially with your dad's humble background as a teacher. It was so honest and transparent. I respect it!!
I love this video. PLEASE make this a series. It is so much more helpful to hear "Boomers" being transparent about their money, what jobs they have or had, what they are living off of now, etc. than it is to know what "Millenials" are making/spending. While I am always curious how my peers are managing their finances, we NEED more retired people talking openly about how they got to retirement and how they manage their money now that they are retired. Show us the way, Boomers, lol.
Completely agree with this comment! Loved this video, thank your dad for being such a good sport, he seems like a hardworking individual and that's very admirable!
I think his voice (on his own channel?) could also be valuable to his contemporaries/boomers, some of us are really struggling and an intelligent (older) voice, like your Dad could be invaluable. We need a "voice of reasonableness" maybe he likes that name. GO MIKE!
You're such an inspiration as well Shelby, I look forward to your videos all the time... There's just something about you that so 😍💕 This video inspires me a lot.
Dad Church here weighing in, clarification on budget is that yes my wife has income that was not included, and the fun budget amounts actually include groceries, personal spending, etc., basically everything except mortgage and utilities. It can vary because some months may actually include air fares, trips, special occasions, so hope that makes sense.

Shelby, your dad is so great! He reminds me so much of my own dad - practical, gives the best advice, and is always there to lend a helping hand. I love that he’s still subbing in high schools.

Such a great video from a Boomers perspective. Your Dad seems so grounded and gives such sage advice especially at the end. I moved back with my parents at the age of 33 until 37 to save $$$ and finally bought my first home. Best decision ever : )
The fact that I grew up watching you starting in middle school and I am now 22 just goes to show how amazing of a creator you are! You grew with your followers which many creators struggle with in my opinion, but you've continued to present us with content that is enjoyable yet relatable and knowledgeable. You are forever killing it! Thank you 🤗
My husband is a teacher and we just bought our first house which needs a little fixing. We're in our mid twenties and have a little baby. I see a lot of ourselves in your parents' story. It was great to watch!
I’m 28 and live at home with my parents. I’m glad your dad touched on that! Sometimes it can be embarrassing to tell people I still do, but I know it’ll be better for me in the long run! I’ve been saving up a bunch and will have a good amount saved when I do move out
Don't feel bad Liz. I lived at home too until I was able to rent my own place at 26. I bought my condo almost 9yrs later. I will be retiring after 30 years.
Don’t be embarrassed - who cares what people think. I struggled with the same thing living back at home at the age of 33 until 37 but my focus was the buy a home and it finally happened and it will for you as well.
that’s my plan too! Currently 23 but I know I’ll be at home until at least 28/29 I honestly don’t mind it (and thankfully my parents don’t either) and I know it will help me buy a home in the future!
Don't worry it's normal, I lived at home until 30 and it meant I was able to buy a place with my sister. I actually loved living with my parents and kinda miss it.
On most of the West Coast particularly Los Angeles, a cheap little house in an ok area is at least a million dollars. I am glad your Dad highlighted this point. Also, the GI bill allowed an entire generation to purchase homes. You also don't mention it in the video but I think your Mom worked too so having a dual income is pretty key for most people nowadays.
Smaller cities are cheaper. For every Seattle there is a Tacoma. Half the price, but you will either make less or work in the big city and have a bad commute.
@@googiegress Nobody believe this comment. I currently live in Tacoma. It is nowhere near half the price lol. It’s marginally cheaper than Seattle now. You’re still getting a shack for 500k in Tacoma.

I feel like there's such a big stigma talking about money for the older generations. My boomer grandparents were very closed off about money with their Gen X kids, even tho they were investing and pretty well off. It caused my parents to never take money seriously and get them into trouble financially. I love that you showed your dad's point of view and it opens the door for families to have these important conversations regarding wealth.
@Clever martins why are you spamming crypto comments on replies that have nothing to do with that??? Seems there are lots of bots posting these investment comments
I think this is my favorite video of yours. They being said at 44 I’m likely not your target demographic but what a neat Dad you have. He made some fantastic financial decisions and continues to make them. I see where you and your sister learned a lot of great lessons from him. That car for $13,500 wow what a find. Smart to flip the house on Queen Anne. Did they end up moving out of Federal Way for that awesome view? I have family in Stanwood - Camano. Thanks again for sharing this with us.
Moving back home is good advice, I did it at the start of the pandemic and have zero regrets. I feel the biggest struggle is actually finding sustained employment. The longest job I had only lasted 5 years due to the company getting bought out and laying everyone off. My Mom just retired after 35 years at one place, I have never had that luxury.
Loved this video Shelby!! My dad is a boomer as well and it's interesting to hear another boomer's perspective on how times have changed regarding lifestyle, housing costs, etc. 😊

Boomers and Millennials are probably both guilty of eating out too much, too many Starbucks stops, and so on. And paying with plastic it’s so easy to not be cognizant of it.
I've been following you a couple years and now I see why you're so popular. You're just a regular kid with regular parents that love you unconditionally. Bravo. Those down home qualities translate well in the way you live your life and are sharing it with others now. Keep up the good work! Lastly - I know we don't live in a perfect world and there is lots of challenges, however, if we could change one thing in America I think it would be for the government to structure incentives for families to stick together. We need more families that are like yours.
Omg was not expecting to tear up towards the end when your dad said his home is always open to his kids. :') wow what a genuinely great dad you have! also I agree 100% with moving back in with your parents. i was able to save for my big move out while paying off my student loan by living with my parents. best decision I ever made and set me up for success.
I absolutely loved what your dad had to say in the end. Life is different... (as a millennial). I appreciate hearing his perspective and appreciate that you shared his story.
Honestly, that advice was truly heartwarming and encouraging. It wouldn't be fair for people to judge mine or anyone's situation without fully knowing it, but myself and many other people in their twenties are still struggling to afford being able to move out. The expenses of living is ridiculous in a lot of places, and depending where you work and how little you might make, there are just a lot of reasons. It is really freaking tough now days to get set up..
Way to go Mom and Dad Church turning that big home into a rental during that time! Staying positive and finding the silver lining had to be scary when the market crashed. I lost a job a couple of years after that and it catapulted our lives to new heights, so I try to always look for ways to keep moving forward. Shelby is a special person to care so much about her family and sharing your story. Great job Shelby and Dad Church!
We actually refinanced it to an interest only loan to make it work, and we got $100K out to pay off the bridge loan. So in the 10 years we rented it we didn’t pay down, but we eventually saw the market bounce back.

Awesome vid! I found your channel through your random encounter from Shan’s vid. Really appreciate what your dad says at the last 27 seconds of the video. Pretty sure it’s safe to say that we feel this enormous amount of societal pressure to get out of the home at 18 a lot more now than back then because of the rise of social media. I left home again recently at 26, with my son and wife after finding out we’re expecting again. My wife and I were in a better position to leave home and we did. But there’s nothing wrong with being at mom or dads house. If I’m being honest I miss their presence sometimes or that feeling of knowing they were just there even if I wasn’t actively interacting with them. Something I’m sure many people miss once they leave. Luckily we chose to stay within a 5 mile radius so our parents aren’t too far away. Overall your dad was smart with his money and it shows. You don’t have to make hundreds of thousands or millions to live good, just educated with your money.
Shelby. I am a quite regular watcher of yours, yet I must admit I mostly watch your vlogs. But this is by far the most interesting and entertaining video of yours in my opinion. I love it, the great layout, background music is very good, your dad has great video personality and the points he is making are thought through and kept in touch with current world. I appreciate it.
Found this doing a random search for Seattle. I don’t know why but I watched this video from beginning to end without skipping which is rare for me. I think Michael just gives off this chill vibe that I find refreshing. Stuff like this needs excellent editing to flow and stay engaging- great job!
I’m 29 years old and I make $100k/year. You’d think that I’d be able to get a decent house at that salary but it’s an extreme struggle in this day and age as we all know. Right now I’m living in SoCal. I love the city but I know it’s not sustainable and there’s no way I’d be able to afford a house here. I realize I’ll need to relocate to a more affordable and IMO less desirable city if I really want to buy. Not only that, I’m realizing as a single person it is even more unattainable. It’s unfortunate that it feels like if I ever want to buy, I’d need a spouse that is also employed full time. I have a lot of doubts about my future and it is really disheartening how expensive and unattainable things have gotten. I can’t imagine bringing kids into this mess. And I’m in a good place financially, I can’t imagine how hard it is for people living on minimum wage..
I'm not going to lie, Shelby's videos weren't on my watch later list for the past few months but I actually loved this video! I love seeing someone else's perspective on life and your dad is a cool person! Plus the editing was on point!
This was really well done, I enjoyed it. Your dad is so nice, I love how he said his kids are welcome to move back home whenever they need to. You're really lucky to have him. I would have loved to know what his plans for the future are. Also noticed that he still has a mortgage even though he's retired, probably cause they got a nicer place? I'm just really scared to still have a mortgage when I have no income coming in. I know it's doable with savings and pension etc (or whatever you have in America) but I just want to have it well paid off by the time I retire and not have to worry about it.
Loved this video! I love watching your dad, he's so cool and laid back and even though the video was about your dad it gave such a nice overview of your childhood as well!
This was such a great video. I appreciate him being so transparent, saying the actual numbers and telling his story and all the wisdom he has learned. I hope he's enjoying his retirement. He has earned it. Also, thank you for your service.
Just found your channel from the streamer xQc (he was watching a video about people's jobs in New York), and this interview was really interesting I liked it. As someone who just started college recently a lot of what your dad said near the end of the video was really encouraging and I appreciated what he had to say. Thanks for the nice video!
Your dad is the opposite of most dads I see. When your 18, your out and on your own. Hearing how he raised his kids and his approach to parenting could be a fun video.
Well he did say "sometimes", which probably means going lean the previous and next months to help cushion the blow from the vacation or whatever it was.
This is the best video in your library so far. For some reason I was riveted to the screen, hanging on to every word your dad stated. This is an interesting topic. If you present more boomers with similar stories, it would be an interesting series. Like House Hunters on HGTV, so interesting that people watch it over and over again.
he's such a good dad, funny and has a great style :') almost cried when he said that his house is always open for his kids. Not a lot of parents are great parents.

This vlog is one of the best ideas ever! Please make a post with your mum as well. We realy would like to get to know her better. They grew up 4 kids. Mr Church didnt mention it how hard it was to raise 4 kids. It is raire now to hear familys having 4 kids. Thank you, thank you for this vlog. In my country, teachers are paid Eur5000 a month and they work from 8 in the morning until 13:30. They have 2 weeks paid in Christmas, 2 weeks in Easter time and 2 whole months in the summer time. Paid holidays.
Your dad is a sweetheart!!! Loved learning about your family’s past. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. Would always love more videos with/of dad’s church 🤍🤍🤍
This was so good! Your dad is a lot like mine. Retired school teacher, and has taken up playing pickle ball for fun! He has always said we’re welcome to live back at home anytime if needed too!
Really refreshing to hear a boomer who is honest about the fact that millennials not being able to buy a house is not because we don’t save, it’s because the housing prices are too high. And that fixer-upper that he bought and lived in with his family is now being bought by professional flippers and corporations. They’ve priced young couples out of the starter home market. It’s all about the starter homes. But he also has a point about us paying for a lot more services than his generation did, but I also don’t think that $45 a month to various subscriptions is what’s keeping most millennials from buying a home.
Already thoroughly enjoying this episode, your dad is really cool, I also live in the Queen Anne area to think you could get a house here for 85K back then compared to now is mind-blowing, my pockets are officially sad. Lmao
Right? So shocking! My husband is an Engineer and I work in Marketing and even considering our stable combined incomes, the idea of house hunting next year gives me anxiety lol
@@caitlinbauer7774 Yes it is extremely shocking, I was driving on Barnett and the houses by the Mt pleasant cemetery are going for 800k to 1.2 mil! They use to be the cheapest in the area because they were located so close to the cemetery and now they are through the roof, I feel this housing market has no end, I work at HV and most of my patients are shocked by the housing market as well.

I'm confused at how the budget works. $3,000 month for the house does not leave much (36K/yr for house leaves 7K/yr to live off). Plus $500 for golfing. All that is great, I just don't exactly understand how it all works out!
I definitely agree with what your dad said about living at home! I lived at home until my husband and I got married. It allowed us to save a lot before we got married. And although Covid was difficult to maneuver, having a smaller wedding saved us ALOT of money! That money will be going towards a down payment for our house in the future.
My dad and your dad would get along so well. My dad has stories like your dad about living in seattle as a young man and he loves golf. Your dad is handy, my dad is handy, your dad does part time work being retired, my dad is a real estate agent part time. This was a really awesome video. Well done!
I love this video. Im in my 40s & and love hearing about how other generations survived with their money...which Im still learning! Your dad really needs his own channel...Ill subscribe

that ending was too touching for me not to comment :') I moved home after living on my own and I've realized what a blessing it is. your dad is so sweet! I think we could take more lessons from "Boomer Money" videos hehe

Loved this video, your dad seems like such a lovely man, full of great advice. Like my own dad’s stories, it is always so interesting to hear about how much they used to get paid, how much a home once cost and the financial decisions that lead them to where they are today. Thank you for sharing 💕
My parents bought a home in North Bend (by Issaquah) in 1989 for $85k, then sold it for $120k in 1993 and moved to the boonies of SnoHo County. My dad remarked that the Seattle area really blew up during this time, with Microsoft and Boeing, hence the real estate boom.
This was a great video. Your dad definitely would do well making UA-cam videos on various subjects especially having the teaching experience. He seems to be very comfortable on camera and has a lot of wisdom to impart, From one golfer to another - straight down the middle gets it done every time

I love getting to know your family’s life! Its very insightful to see the differences in households by demographics! I love it!! As a child from immigrant parents it’s interesting to see how other people lived/grew up!
Your dad is so awesome. The biggest take away for millennials is to see that your parents started with a fixer upper house that they could afford and gradually upgraded over the years....your last rental house, for example...is completely unattainable as a starter home but most influencers are sending the wrong message as that is the norm for housing.

So in the 10 years we rented it we didn’t pay down, but we eventually saw the market bounce back.
your dad is truly one of the best. such an honest and inspiring video. You're lucky to have him!

I love how transparent you are with exact numbers so there are no smoke and mirrors. So refreshing.
Your dad reminds me of mine, who sadly passed away in 2016 unexpectedly. I love watching your videos with him 🥺❤️
Loved this, your dad is interesting, articulate and smart…fantastic influence for you and your family. 👏
Loved this video! I love watching your dad, he's so cool and laid back and even though the video was about your dad it gave such a nice overview of your childhood as well!
We love dad church!! More of these !! He raised his children and family so right! Beautiful family and story, thank you for sharing ❤️
That little advice at the end was so cute. I think that it was especially meant to Shelby and her siblings.
Shelby's Dad is an absolute legend! Thanks for making this video and being so open. 💙
Your Dad seems like a very sweet man. I hope you feel like he was always there for you growing up.
Never seen a video of yours that I don’t like. You are the coolest. This upload deserves applause.
Blessing your youtube feed once again.
this is one is the best one of you videos so far. Thank you for sharing!
@Shéby Churçh are those lottery numbers?
“Food and entertainment anywhere from $2500 to $6000, that’s pretty much it”
That’s how I want to live out my retirement
Well he did say "sometimes", which probably means going lean the previous and next months to help cushion the blow from the vacation or whatever it was.
PLEASE DO MORE OF THESE! I’ve been wanting to move to Washington State, but the cost of living where I am is so much lower. This is SO helpful.
Loved this!! Appreciate the honesty and transparency. And the editing style is super cool. We love when dad church gets a main character moment

Dad church is just the sweetest! Thanks for sharing :) such a genuine family.
I’m in Iowa; the cost of living here is a fraction of the East Coast. A $3000 mortgage would get you a mansion here!
I LOVED this feature of your dad! It was really well done. Great job! I’d love to see more boomer money videos if possible :)
You have such an amazing and loving dad. He is goals!!
You can tell this video had a lot of love and effort put into it. Great work as always Shelby 😄.
I loved this, we need more
Already thoroughly enjoying this episode, your dad is really cool, I also live in the Queen Anne area to think you could get a house here for 85K back then compared to now is mind-blowing, my pockets are officially sad. Lmao
I used to live on Queen Anne as well! Right across the street from SPU.

I'm confused at how the budget works. $3,000 month for the house does not leave much (36K/yr for house leaves 7K/yr to live off). Plus $500 for golfing. All that is great, I just don't exactly understand how it all works out!
My mom also works!
Fudging the numbers for click bait
Does not include his spouses income, monthly budget is $7,100 that’s $85,000 a year
I cannot wait for Graham Stephan to react to this video! Great idea Shelby!:)
I grew up in Federal Way! So cool to see some familiar areas. Your dad is a smart guy and obviously did pretty well financially.
Well done!
Dad Church is an incredibly lovely human being!
Great Work Shelby, Graham Stephan finally got His much anticipated Boomer Bucks Video
I love this video. Im in my 40s & and love hearing about how other generations survived with their money...which Im still learning! Your dad really needs his own channel...Ill subscribe
I wish this had more views! I’m subscribed to you, watch your videos everytime you upload - but I never saw this video until it showed up in my recommended today!! Love your dad!
I love your dad’s hair! He’s very handsome. What a great video and great advice.
that ending was too touching for me not to comment :') I moved home after living on my own and I've realized what a blessing it is. your dad is so sweet! I think we could take more lessons from "Boomer Money" videos hehe
What a boomer money 💰 video. It's Almost like the "the list" type video. Dad is a natural.
Had to comment as he came across as such a genuine and caring person! Loved this.
Your dad seems like a really wise man. Love to get some advice from him on how to navigate life and adulthood.
What a wise wise man! And what a wonderful relationship he has with his kids! It’s so wonderful to see!
What a cool guy! Can you clarify, are the spending amounts for the household (2 incomes)? Because the spending comes out to more than his income.
Thank you Shelby for introducing us to your father.
I like to take this opportunity and congratulate him on his retirement.
I feel that your life compared to your fathers is real.
Thanks for watching and showing love...❤️ by leaving a comment on this video...👍congratulations 🤝🎊 you won a prize...🎁 text📝 me☝️ to acknowledge your prize...🎁
I had this idea over a year ago, glad to see someone execute! You should rename it Boomer Bucks! 😉
THIS VIDEO WAS SO GOOD, YOUR DAD IS AWESOME :')
“because they spend all their money on avocado toast & lattes” LMAO
hahahah I told him to say that
@@ShelbyChurch extremely accurate LOL
Thought I was clicking on millennial money, but to my surprise it’s Shelby ☺️ Enjoyed this one. Can you make more like this?
Loved this video, your dad seems like such a lovely man, full of great advice. Like my own dad’s stories, it is always so interesting to hear about how much they used to get paid, how much a home once cost and the financial decisions that lead them to where they are today. Thank you for sharing 💕
I really enjoyed this video Dad Church!!! I bet you're a great teach cause you're a great Dad!! Love you Shelby!!!
Your dad is amazing. You’re so lucky 🥰
This was a great video. Your dad definitely would do well making UA-cam videos on various subjects especially having the teaching experience. He seems to be very comfortable on camera and has a lot of wisdom to impart, From one golfer to another - straight down the middle gets it done every time
Thanks for watching and showing love...❤️ by leaving a comment on this video...👍congratulations 🤝🎊 you won a prize...🎁 text📝 me☝️ to acknowledge your prize...🎁
I love getting to know your family’s life! Its very insightful to see the differences in households by demographics! I love it!! As a child from immigrant parents it’s interesting to see how other people lived/grew up!
I think I’m speaking for everyone watching Monica and Shelby’s video when I say: WE LOVE DAD CHURCH!!
Such a great video, Shelby!! Your dad is awesome too! I also wonder if Graham Stephan will react to this video.
Your dad is so awesome. The biggest take away for millennials is to see that your parents started with a fixer upper house that they could afford and gradually upgraded over the years....your last rental house, for example...is completely unattainable as a starter home but most influencers are sending the wrong message as that is the norm for housing.
