This is how much UA-cam paid me in 2019 for the ads on my videos. As I mentioned in the video, there are several ways UA-cam earns money- one of the simplest ways to do is by enabling ads on your videos. In my video This Is How Much UA-cam Paid Me For My 1,000,000 Viewed Video, I show how this can break down with each video. But for the first time- I decided to just show how much I made for the entire year from UA-cam ads!

I know those other UA-camrs try hard to transition and still keep some of their content the same cuz they think that's what viewers want but it just sometimes turns out cringey even though I know they work hard as well. But you and your sister did such a good job transitioning and maturing your content and I still love watching your videos. I unsubscribed to so many of the other UA-camrs that I've watched when I was younger.

I honestly feel like she should have more subscribers ! It’s so much content on UA-cam it’s hard to keep up with every channel I’m subscribed to .. but when I have time I like checking out her channel .. she gets straight to the point !

The UA-cam algorithm loves videos longer than 10 minutes because UA-cam themselves also profit from the extra ad in the middle

But what is the point if the average person usually stops watching after 2 mins or so?
I rarely have videos more than 5 mins long. I believe out of 25 videos, only 3 or so are more than 10 min.
yeah I don't get it.. chrome is going to start banning ads that do things people hate like interrupting the video to show an ad in the middle - but would they actually do that to youtube? They are the second most annoying ads after the nearly hour long skippable ads (I believe the longest I encountered was 48 minutes but then it started to play it constantly)

Awesome video, Shelby! I always enjoy learning how much other UA-camrs make. And then I cry, because my niche is historically a lower CPM niche, lol. Time of year is huge for ad revenue as well. Companies gearing up for the 4th quarter with Black Friday and Christmas have more in their advertising budget because they are looking to sell more products. I always love the 4th quarter! haha
@Tigron It varies for the time of year. Right now it is pretty decent around that much. But then at the beginning of the year it is like half of that much. My other channel, with far less subs, has about double the RPM so around $14 but again it depends on the time of year, right now is the highest time of year for RPMs

I LOVE how transparent you are with your finances in this video. Not nearly enough people are talking about this. I just started my own channel for this specific reason and am so happy to have found another youtuber interested in being this transparent with their audience.

Here in Ireland taxes are awful, normally would be 40% but then by the time you include insurance and other charges, it’s more like 47-48%
Love the video, I’ve been watching your channel for YEARS!! ❤️ But just to clarify, that’s not exactly how tax brackets work. Being in the 24% tax bracket (in Cali) you pay $14,382 in taxes from the first $84,200 of income and then pay 24% of the rest ($140,000-$84200). So you end up paying about $27,773.50 in taxes, not $33,600. Which is still A LOT of money regardless. Sorry, I’m an accounting and finance major and I love talking about this stuff. Great video!!

this isn’t considering any standard or itemized deductions she could have since 1) don’t know which she used and how much she could’ve deducted if she itemized and 2) I’m just trying to explain how the brackets themselves work.
Also, this is only considering state taxes since that is what she was trying to explain in the video

Hey Myles! I would suggest starting out by not worrying about making an income and doing something you are passionate about and enjoy. It will allow you to experiment to find out what works. Once you have a certain threshold of subscribers, then you can monetize your UA-cam channel. Shelby mentioned certain types of content earn more ad revenue. May be worth doing some research. I hear Skillshare has classes to help with that. :D

First time viewer and retired CPA. Thank you for letting us know the inside workings of your channel. Thanks also for being a self employed entrepreneur. More people should be. You know how hard you work and the risk you take. You know your tax burden! Often the government uses to much tax revenue to make life easy for people who may have made bad choices. We need to care for them, but government support shouldn’t be a lifetime annuity and a way out from working. You may be seeing the difference between Republicans and Democrats (liberals) and socialists.

This is not how tax brackets work. You don't pay the 24% on the entire amount. Only on the portion between 84k and 160k.

I feel for you Lana! I wish many young US citizens would "get" that the promise of "free" education and health care is not really free. They will pay out the nose via taxes for the "free" stuff they think they deserve. I'd rather be taxed less, and save my money to buy my health care or education. That way I can get the best quality of each with my own money, rather then relying on the government to decide what's best for me by taking almost half of everything I earn.

She likely paid 16-17% if I had to guess. The American tax bracket isn’t a straight percentage. Her saying 24% is flat out false.
Shelby congrats on growing your channel so much in the past year! If I had one piece of advice, I would HIGHLY encourage you to not be tempted to spend a lot more just because you make more. You are clearly intelligent and creative so although I am sure you will be successful in life, you never know how long success on UA-cam itself will last. I'd recommend you save as much as you can now and invest in things like index funds, bonds, and real estate to ensure long term financial stability. I'm sure you know all this already but I've seen too many people go broke after short-term success and I want you to be as secure as you can be. Love your videos, keep going!!
I actually do invest all those, just invested in real estate for the first time this year! I’m cutting back on dumb stuff though like postmates, maybe find a new hair person..

While she can’t legally tell you how much Skillshare paid her on this video - I work on the brands side of things as an Influencer Coordinator. She probably made anywhere from $12k-20k for that ad. There’s a variety of factors that go into what rate they agreed on - but in my experience, that’s about what it would be.

So overall she’s probably comfortably in the 200’s, which as a 4th year med student looking at 450k in debt and a family med career paying 220k, this just seems crazy. I know creating an online brand is really hard, but med school is utterly grueling. During my 4 years, for example, I know 3 students who committed suicide. Just paints a picture of truly how brutal med school is. Point being it’s incredible that she basically built the income of a low-tier doctor making videos.
