Minor correction: Needles Overlook road is WEST of 191, NOT east. There is a sign from both directions on 191. Amazing I get anywhere with my sense of direction !!!
I watch a lot of these kinds of videos but yours is head and shoulders above most. Beautiful blend of pertinent information and your own personal take on things, great editing, a terrific speaking voice, unobtrusive background music. Well done. Planning our first trip to Utah in March and this is exactly the kind of thing we will be looking for. Thank you!
Between work, kids and other life things, your videos are so relaxing to watch. Great personality, editing and I can tell that you thouroughly enjoy doing this for all of us. I know this is an older video, but I am still catching up on all of your videos as I get time. Take care!
You the man, Slim! Very nice video, close to mesmerizing for me. Utah is so gorgeous; when I was there I wanted to pick up every rock for my back home garden LOL!! I took a college elective course in geology and I am still interested at 72. Used to love going into the field and never wanting to go back home. If I had it to do over, I would have majored in Geology. Would not have made the money that I was fortunate enough to make, but may well have been happier. I have my sights set for another journey into Utah and go admire some more of this fantastic geological beauty. Stay safe Slim!
It's been decades since I spent a week at the Needles overlook. I guess my priorities are different than other people's. It seemed strange to watch people arrive at the overlook, get out, enjoy the view for 5 minutes, get back in and drive away. Parks have ranger talks and for a week I was the only person to attend them. I still remember what I learned that week. Life has its ups and downs but that was a high point for me.
I love how you alternate expansive views with closeups. Best closeup: yucca plants with curly fibers peeling from the leaf edges contrasting with the wavy almost water-flowing look of dried wood (5:03).
At 62 and after hiking some 4000 mls including parts of AT and PCT I was looking to get off the ground when I went to bed and saw an Aliner in a campground this spring. I've taken my newly purchased Scout on a few local trips and find it to be just what I need. I am looking forward to 4 weeks out in the Rock Mtn states this summer. Being new to this type of travel and camping your videos are very informative and enjoyable and have inspired some minor modifications of my own. John C Jupiter FL
Gorgeous, gorgeous, and MORE GORGEOUS!!!! And no, Slim, I wasn't talking about you!! (Although you are indeed a handsome fellow! 😄) That sunset tho.... WOW. The colors are so intense & rich against the blackness of the tangled trees below. so I would love to paint that sometime!! Thanks again for another AMAZING video!!! God bless & take care!! 😊
all luxury expenses... except beer... that is a necessity 🙂 I love Utah... especially in early spring before it gets too hot... I am enjoying backing up 5 years to some of your early adventures... stunning photography Slim 🙂
Nothing beats a beautiful view, a gorgeous sunset the calmness of the surroundings and having a meal on the ledge watching it all is a great opportunity that feels the senses. Narrating the adventures is the topping of a great journey. Great video!
HAVE BEEN REALLY ENJOYING YOUR VIDEOS. A LOT OF THE PLACES YOU VISIT IN THE WESTERN U.S. ARE PLACES I HAVE VISITED OR DRIVEN THROUGH SO I ENJOY SEEING THEM AGAIN AND IN MORE DETAIL. I HAVE A MOTOR HOME AND AS A WOMAN I HAVE NOT FELT SAFE TO BOONDOCK BUT I DO LOVE THE RED ROCKS OF ARIZONA AND THE SOUTHWEST AS WELL AS WYOMING, MONTANA AND IDAHO. AND WE CERTAINLY CANNOT FORGET THE COAST HIGHWAY THROUGH CALIFORNIA, OREGON AND WASHINGTON. SAFE TRAVELS AND KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING.
Outstanding video work and editing! Really fantastic views also! I liked how you described boondocking. There's a lot of cost to get to that point, but as you've shown it's well worth the expense.
That’s some beautiful shots from up there. Especially the morning view of the Needles. Maybe better than my best, and believe me I have tried many times. I camp up there whenever I can. I have been trying to keep this place secret for quite some time. BTW, I picked out the color of the walkways when they last redid them 25 years ago. I too thought the same, it reminded me of Butch Cassidy seeing Jeeps roaming around at night out there. But it’s been years since I’ve seen one.
That was a great sunset. We had one like that in Missouri last week. The peach sky with the blue clouds in the foreground. I think my wife wanted me to shut up raving about it ;-) I keep getting a mish-mash of recommendations for your videos from UA-cam, in no particular order. So, I sorted your vid's by date (oldest first) and am going through them all. I appreciate your wit and puns regarding social/music/cultural references and your mechanical innovation. But most of all, I appreciate your videography and the music you add.
You're literally doing something I've always wanted to do. I'll have to save up a bunch. By the way, I'm a fellow Albertan and have been watching all of your videos. Consider me a fan :p
Our Needles Overlook story... My wife and I are from Vancouver Island in Canada. Several years ago we took a Grand Canyon river cruise... toured Utah along the way with our little Lee-sure Lite pop-up tent trailer. Spent a few days enjoying the National Parks around Moab. On our last day, I asked the front desk staff what we could see on our way out of town. They replied: "Needles Overlook" and gave us some directions. Now they didn't get into the specifics of what it was. So, in our minds, we're imagining some sort of small valley below us with hoodoos or some similar structures in middle of it. Even when you leave the main highway and drive out to Needles Overlook, you can only see flat fields around you. Our expectations were pretty low. So we were gobsmacked when we came across this breathtaking vista that stretched out below us from horizon to horizon and as far as the eye could see. I keep a photo/travel blog... my write up and a couple of photos of Needles... www.tales-from-a-pale-blue-dot.com/2013/09/needles-overlook.html
Ever done Oregon? There's a beautiful state and not just the coast. It was our first major trip with our Aliner. We enjoyed it so much we're planning to return as soon as we can. Right now our dollar is taking a beating compared to yours though.
Hi Mike, My dollar is the same as yours, Canadian! I haven't taken the trailer to Oregon but I'm think of doing a coast trip some time this year. Glad you liked the Overlook, it is a beautiful place. Maybe next time I'll bring a mini wind turbine!
Enjoyed the video, you make great travel logs. While I'm not a nomad, I think the aliner would be great for someone who needs a camper and doesn't want to haul it with a pickup.
Just read a report on iOverlander that most of the area around the overlook is now closed to camping. The report said they shut it down sometime in 2018.
Slim! these are absolutely awesome! my bag is packed, I am ready to go on your next adventure. give me enough time to pack a food box! can't wait to travel :)
Hate to bring up an old video but I've just been watching yours like a playlist! Great stuff so far. I live in Utah and still can't get over the views everywhere. I know you had mentioned at the end about your computer battery. I thought I'd share some ideas that I've used in the past for camping. Everytime I go camping I bring with me my 18000 maH car jumper/power bank. It was purchased on amazon and will charge a phone from dead probably about 20 times. I bring it on my camping trips as a back up power source. No actual plug connections but USB ones. It also came with a universal computer charging set of about 15 differnet plugs. I have used it before to charge a computer when needed. Its small, compact and light so it doesn't take up a whole lot of space. Plus it's nice to have a little ease of mind to use to jump your car battery if need be! Hope it helps and happy camping!
Hi Aydan, Thanks for the tip! What specific power pack are you using? Does it charge from the vehicle's 12V outlet or just 110V? Always looking for the best alternatives. My last battery booster froze and leaked battery acid in my garage, so am actually looking for something different. Thanks Again!
I will have to double check the make and model for mine. Mine offers 12v and 110v so can be charged either way. I stumbled across this one on amazon which is twice my power and has build in AC plug. Little pricey but might be worth it. www.amazon.com/Portable-Outlet-Battery-Pack-ChargeTech/dp/B0116BX968#Ask
Good video and great views! FYI - if you check out amazon they have trays that simply hook onto the drivers steering wheel. Heck you could probably make one. Keep up the great work! 👍🏼
Unfortunately where you camped are no longer camping areas. Such a bummer, I tried camping in that spot 6 months ago. Ranger notified me and showed me the sign.
Awesome video.... I know you camp safely.... but seeing you park by the edge of a cliff bad scenario's come to mind.... for me I would of set the outriggers, logs under the tires, parking brake set if so equipped.... and a huge log chain attached to the frame of the trailer buried to a concrete block weighing several tons in the dirt under the trailer.... I could proly sleep then.... LOL ... :) p.s. regarding cost of camping and travel.... for years I joked that the boy scouts should have a merit badge for the scouts..... ( the R.V. merit badge ) passing the merit badge would require the scout to prove that he can camp for under 75.00 per day..... with a full size 37 foot motorhome.... including emerald 3 generator set.... LOL :)
great video. Get one of those 12v power converters. I use one for my laptop in my camper. On a regular 27 group RV battery you can use a typical laptop non-stop for at least two days. For software, Corel VideoStudio is quite decent and inexpensive.
Hi Grzegorz. I did pick one up off amazon shortly after i did that video. Work well in car, so so in trailer when battery gets low. On process of upgrading my solar panels. Thanks!
Super video! Did you get a new camera? I don't recall such good detail in some of your previous videos. I especially like the gnarled trees in 5:00 - 5:25. Kudos!!!
I live in utah and go down into this area at least once a year. That being said it never clicked that I could go boondocking there! Looks like I have a new place to go camping, ie sleeping in the back of an suv.
I have just found your UTube post, love them keep up the good work. I would like to know if you have ever replaced the large ceiling panel inside your camper? If so is there a video?
Minor correction: Needles Overlook road is WEST of 191, NOT east. There is a sign from both directions on 191. Amazing I get anywhere with my sense of direction !!!
I love rewatching your old video of needles overlook area. It’s a stunning place.
You have that kind of movie voice that always made nature videos better, and your videos are beautiful Thank You
Unfortunately camping is no longer allowed within about 3 miles from the viewpoint. All the beautiful and easy to get to sites are no camping now.
I think he was in TV. He looks like maybe a Vulcan ambassador or something. Could be where he gets the funds to travel. ;)
This is one of my favorite Potatohead vids. I don't know how many times I've watched it now. Stunning photography and great narration.

The beauty of Utah makes me cry. The sunsets are amazing. I've been going to southern Utah for the past 17 summers.
You the man, Slim! Very nice video, close to mesmerizing for me. Utah is so gorgeous; when I was there I wanted to pick up every rock for my back home garden LOL!! Anton Bouchette I love geology too. It was one of my favorite classes at the University of MN.

I love that you factor in beer costs in with your boondocking plans... Another great video.

Once again, you have taken us to a place of true beauty! Thank you and stay safe.
you do an amazing job sir. Keep wandering and videoing your travels for those of us not fortunate enough to do it.
Wow, that's a million dollar view!
Those early morning views were great!
You're doing a great job of editing!
Yet another great video Slim! Despite the challenges your editing software presents, the end result is always outstanding! Thanks for sharing!
Breath taking and beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Your capture of nature is great! You photograph talents are evident. Keep up the good work.

Wow, fantastic views at that location. Worth every penny in my opinion.

I drove through parts of Utah coming across country and i found it absolutely breathtaking .
What beautiful pictures you take!
I am a recent subscriber thank you for this beautiful video you are an inspiration!
I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work.
Truly spectacular photography. You are making my previous fave RV travelers on UA-cam look sadly boring.
I really like that map under plastic idea for the tabletop. Great work on the videos.

Enjoyed the trip and the music.

Beautiful sunsets...
Utah is stunning.
We have been to Needles overlook. Breathtaking views.
What a beautiful spot.
Nice job!
The desert pictures are just beautiful. Heading out in January for the RTR. I hope I can run into you… Figuratively, not literally!
Just read a report on iOverlander that most of the area around the overlook is now closed to camping. The report said they shut it down sometime in 2018.

I have never been to the Grand Canyon, and I appreciate this video.
Veronica Stewart You should totally go it's very romantic!
Beautiful !
Beautiful area and great channel!!! We love it out west. New sub here👍
might I suggest a dc to ac converter to charge your laptop batteries, they are pretty cheap and in your case a light low amp one would work well.
beautiful views - Capitol Reef, visited there last summer in my travel trailer, was inspiring....
I really like the music !!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately where you camped are no longer camping areas. Such a bummer, I tried camping in that spot 6 months ago. Ranger notified me and showed me the sign.
You need to make your way to Virginia!! And find a nice quiet campground along the blue ridge parkway near Roanoke va!!!!
great vid I have been following you, since I am retired ans single I am thinking of some travel,i like the setup you have
Gorgeous!
Beautiful Mr. Potatohead!

Show me 'duh hand! I think your second evening skyscape. Amazing beauty from not a human hand....................
I think this is my favorite boondocking video. Now I just need to find this place. ;-)
Happy Trails!
Super video! Did you get a new camera? I don't recall such good detail in some of your previous videos. I especially like the gnarled trees in 5:00 - 5:25. Kudos!!!
Same cheap cameras as on the other videos, however I just came back from testing out a new camera. Hope to show the results soon. Thanks!
Loving your videos from here in the UK. Is your lifestyle entirely funded by your channel?
Butch Cassidy I believe had a boyhood home not to far from Panguitch Utah.
I live in utah and go down into this area at least once a year. That being said it never clicked that I could go boondocking there! Looks like I have a new place to go camping, ie sleeping in the back of an suv.
amazing videos - living the dream (I only dreamed of)
I have just found your UTube post, love them keep up the good work. I would like to know if you have ever replaced the large ceiling panel inside your camper? If so is there a video?
You mean an entire half of the roof? Sorry but no. Thanks, SP
