No man, but A tier is an absolute for me. I'm Mexican, grew up having a ranch, riding horses and working the land. I definetly love my cowboy boots, I would never be able to not have a pair in my wardrobe, some of them can really dress up denim into a proper Canadian Tuxedo and there is nothing to replace them when using a cowboy suit (except for the low cut mexican boot). But they can't be an S tier just because they do lack versatility while oxfords can be used with denim, a tuxedo and everything in between

    COWBOY BOOTS! ❤️😁❤️
    The footwear for every occasion.
I am British, I live in the UK. Certainly NOT a place where Western wear is fashionable, but I LIVE in cowboy boots, and have done for over 10 years. As you say, they are so diverse.
    - Trousers or jeans outside: they are very smart.
    - Tight jeans inside: They're rock 'n' Roll! 🤘
    - They're practically slippers, so you can whip them on quickly too!
    - They're interesting. Often I get an intrigued look and a "Are those cowboy boots?" from someone. "Yes" I say, as I pull up a jeans leg to show the full boot. "Cool!" they say, with an impressed face 😂

Cowboy boots work easily anywhere in the southern and western US. They have grown more in popularity everywhere now because of the success of the show Yellowstone. Not only cowboy boots, but wax canvas jackets and jean jackets have been blowing up this last year. I’ve been rocking my Justin’s long before Yellowstone, but since have added two more Tecovas pairs, a roughout for everyday and a Caiman pair for special occasions. Thanks Yellowstone. Courtney, you should do a piece on the influence that Yellowstone has had on fashion/western wear the last two years.

Oxford shoes with cap toe, laces tied knot must be in center. These rules were strict but their value was learned when I became Sr. Level Engineer meeting C suite stakeholders, high ranking state, local and federal officials in US and other countries. These grooming standards matter. My beard and Moustache is always properly groomed, I use straight razor every day, eye brows don't have wild hair stick out, my ties are only three types, Solid, Regimental, Medalion. Solid ties for Gov't and C suite meetings, Regimental ties for Military meetings, Medalion for formal parties (Cocktails, Dinner Functions etc). These standards are going down the tubes now. I’m gonna speak on the dress sneaker. I work at a Men’s clothing store that sells casual wear (Take a guess) and we sell some dress sneakers from Cole Haan. At first I HATED how they looked until we got the runners in brown with the white bottom. I tried them on and they were so comfortable. With my discount, i ended up spending about $40 and I love them.

Great list Courtney! I mostly agree with your rankings other than I thought Chukkas were ranked a lot lower than where I would have put them - I think they're a great casual boot that never goes out of style. As for black sneakers, I do have a pair of black Adidas Sambas that have what I feel is a timeless look, although I'll admit they're not very versatile. They do look good if you're going for a monochromatic look, though. If you do a future video, I would love to hear your thoughts on desert boots, venetian loafers, espadrilles, huarache loafers, and birkenstock sandals!

Excellent assessment...in my opinion. I must confess to owning a pair of Timberland work boots, but they are strictly used for WORK like landscaping around the house, remodeling, venturing out in a storm, etc. I have owned three pair in 45 continuous years and find them highly durable for the price. One thing that makes me curious; which type of shoe would be the most difficult to overcome/unsee if worn by someone you were meeting on a first or second date? I am way past that point but still curious.

Courtney, I loved this video! I'm a retired professional investor and one of the very first groups I followed was footwear. I've met some of the giants of the industry: Phil Knight (Nike), Paul Fireman (Reebok), Sidney and Jeffrey Swartz (Timberland). It's a fascinating industry, and, as you know, many styles come and go while, as you point out, some styles become timeless: such as the Chuck Taylor (since around 1920!) and the penny loafer which goes back to the G.H Bass Weejun Penny Loafer in 1936! You might not know it, but interestingly, the HeyDude Brand was bought by the Crocs in 2022 (deal announced in 2021). Despite these being two of your lowest rated shoes, Crocs itself has been a huge stock market success. I guess that old expression is true: There's no accounting for taste! Incidentally, I would suggest that your metaphor would make more sense if you said, "killed 0 birds with two stones" vs. "Killed 0 birds with 0 stones." The former alludes to the fact that there were two tries without success while the latter suggests no tries! Any view on Birkenstocks or some of the newer winners such as ON and HOKA (owned by Deckers?)

The main reason is I work in people's houses where I need to look both smart, but also have a practical shoe and be able to go between inside and outside with an easy slip on/off. That said, penny loafers could work easily as well. Service boots would be annoying because I'd keep having to do up laces.

Courtney, I'm a podiatrist and I've never been so engaged by any video. I would give most shoes the same rankings +/- one tier level. Some comments:
Penny loafers: the ones in the pic look sharp but this is what boys wear in first grade until they learn to tie shoelaces. B
    Tassel loafers: too flamboyant. C
White sneakers: the shoe of the 2020s. We'll see if it stands the test of time. S is too generous.
Oxford/Derby: look the same to me, and I'm a professional. Must own for every man, S rank on point.
I'm not a boot guy and won't comment on chelseas/chukkas/doc martins. Cowboy boots can be a powerful attention grabber, think Schwarzenegger's entrance in Kindergarten cop, in snakeskin boots, smoking a cigar. Truly a statement piece. B
Chuck Taylor's are overrated, I guess if you want to make a deliberate effort to look spontaneous. C
Jordans: too expensive, lousy arch support, not even great for basketball. Unless you're in high school, it's a D.
Vans: another shoe I've never seen a high school graduate wear. D
Dress sneakers: I bought a pair, most uncomfortable shoes I own. Definitely makes a statement. They look nice enough for an unserious formal event, like an evening spring/summer outing. C
Timbs: shoe of the 2010s. I had a pair of brown timberland oxfords from podiatry school that looked great and stood up to the snow. They lasted years, I miss them. Boots are very practical. B
Crocs: your remarks are on point, I hate them for patients. F
Hey dudes: squishy and comfy, maybe a good recovery shoe, could see these in a D or F tier.
Square toe dress shoes. Iconic for the 2000s. I got married in a pair of them. F for now but you know fashion is cyclical.
Boat shoes: the essential shoe of whiteboy summer. Wear it to church then straight to a barbecue without changing clothes. Whatever you're doing, you're not running or working, because whiteboy summer is all about being chill. B, A if you're under 30.
Lastly you left off the newbalance dad sneakers, not flattering but sooo practical!
Anyway I love your videos, you always have so much wisdom!

Very good round up and categorization on men's shoes!
For me: The tasseled loafer, especially the leather one shown, definitely, imo, ranks above the penny in formality. I would put them in the "A" category. (You also have the tassel -skirt loafer; the pinch-tassel, which I would put a 1/2 step down with the pennies)
The leather Chelsea boot was worn by that ever classy and very well dressed guy John Steed of Avenger fame....should be in "A" category.

@@matt_valentine you would have to be an athlete during that time frame to fully understand the dynamic of Jordan's. Example 1 the patent leather wasn't for style it was for strength and durability on the Jordan 11 as stated above. Also the designs are actually not random in fact all the J's that Mike played in were designed off something he was into.. example the 14 model was a direct influence from his Ferrari. In alot of ways the history dating all the way back to the 1 is very detailed. There is a channel on YT called Wear testers.. Chris and Jodi ( Husband and wife ) excellent people by the way. Chris gives so much information as to how the shoe was crafted and the back story you can hear the passion behind it. I invite you to check it out. Just know that for alot of older gentlemen Jordan's aren't about a fashion statement it's about individuality and maybe a shoe you couldn't afford back then. In alot of ways I can respect someone wearing a pair of Jordan's over an expensive pair of penny loafers 'bought for style' from some brand that is just like the next brand for status purposes. Always multiple explanations for what could be... just food for thought.

I really like this ranking, but I would've put the black sneaker on a higher tier, like a C tier or even an B tier. The black sneaker is a really solid option when you are a sneaker type of person who doesn't like the feeling of wearing shoes in general. It is true that it doesn't stand up too much outside a monochromatic look, but if you keep them clean, they can look kind off like a minimalistic black shoes, but much more confortable. Also if its a leather sneaker it gives them shine and the ability to be easy to clean. You can wear black sneakers with almost any outfit.

I graduated HS in 93 to categorize my age. Chuck Taylors and Vans (and Jordans perhaps) are thrasher shoes. Straight skate shoes. I wore Chucks and Vision Street Wear shoes for skating, but I also wore Doc Martins from Jr High through HS and through my 20s and 30s working in kitchens and will attest that Docs are the BEST shoes to work in greasy fast food joints to steakhouses because of their slip resistance. I cannot attest to the Chinese Docs, but the English made Docs are worth whatever price they ask for them. I had a pair of 10 holes that lasted 11 years before I had to ditch them. And I wore these to work as well as on the daily when not at work. I am a guy, and I attribute shoe characteristics to function before style because I don't care how good I look over how safe and functional my shoes perform. With that said, I'm in the medical profession now and while most people wear trainers and sneakers to work, I like to step up my game with dress shoes and it is noticed. I appreciate your perspective and opinion on these matters. I agree the service boot is #1. Totally killer boot for a professional. It is funny how many patients I treat who wear Hey Dudes. I can't stand them. I think they're hideous. A person should have more ambition in their feet. But what is interesting is the low rating for square toe dress shoes. Its hilarious. Let's create the next "Ultimate Tier List" video for watches, shall we?

  • @jim6070
    @jim6070 Місяць тому

Fellow Clevelander here. I think you are mostly right on with this list Courtney except I would drop loafers down the list a bit. Their day was in the 90s. I feel men should probably always wear shoes with laces so wear oxfords instead. They can go casual if necessary. I feel service boots are great and as a viewer probably old enough to be your father, I can tell you cowboy boots had their day in the 80s. It was very cool, but over. I like the white sneaker trend and I agree Chuck Taylor’s aren’t a good look for a guy. Actually, they weren’t good back in the day either. I do think they look good on women for some reason though. I guess it’s like the boyfriend shirt phenomenon. I actually sold shoes for a year in the 80s when the Jordans came out. They were just so different and everybody liked them, but for us 20 something’s back then they were actually used for playing basketball. Otherwise, we didn’t wear them if we wanted to look good. Nice list Courtney with good rankings. Glad you dumped the Dudes to the bottom. They are slippers and most Sketchers are only a small step above.

take a look at grant stone for service boots or loafers. they're not cheap. amazing shoes. depending on your personal style, i might consider "dune" or waxy commander. they're mid browns. great for khakis and blue jeans. i think darker brown shoes are over rated.

Are Timberlands not just a name-brand variation of what she is calling "service boots"? There are other brands of boots equivalent to Timberlands, pretty much all variations on the "service boot"

    • @jward3961
      @jward3961 6 місяців тому +1

I think Timberlands are geared more like a work boot and hiking boots. Service boots are usually patent leather and modeled after military boots. Similar shape but work and hiking are usually a little more chunky silhouette I think. I think the service boots aren’t insulated padded etc like Timberlands. Probably why the slimmer profile.

Same with Dr Martens. But it's just like how Courtney ranks vans and chuck taylors which are variants of sneakers. They're popular enough that people probably appreciate the separate rankings.

@@nickmajora timbs and docs are in the category that people who wear either of them almost never wear other types of boots, whereas people who are actually into service boots or anything else are more likely to enjoy a variety of brands and styles.

As a woman - curiously watching if I agree with Courtney - I can confirm she is correct! 😂🫶🏻 Love a dressier shoe than a casual shoe on a man, and it always makes me do a double take at him and go ‘Humm…interesting choice of shoe’ (in a good way 😅). Plus, if he’s cute, it’s a great conversation starter.

@@dang75790 oh really? 😂😂 I quite like more unusual sometimes alternative styles and am always sussing out what others are wearing, both men and women. I guess that those who care, care. And those who don’t, don’t. Each to their own. 🙃
Quite interesting though because for quite a lot of women (not all) shoes can become a whole topic of conversation but I’ve never heard men discuss shoes with each other…unless they work in fashion I guess or are sneakerheads.
Hence why I was intrigued by this video. Would be interesting to hear a man organise his preference for female shoes as a point of comparison. 🤔
Whatever you like you should wear that. Always wonderful to see people being unapologetically themselves!

I almost never disagree with Courtney but must speak up on behalf of the Chucka Boot. It's at minimum a B. It's a great fall/winter boot that is easy to wear with jeans and chinos. It's much more versatile when it comes to body types. Chelsea boots can ONLY be worn by skinny dudes, they look terrible on bigger guys. Anyone can wear a chucka! To me, they are the white sneaker for the fall and winter. Guys with any sense of regular style would wear a chucka over everything in group B with the possible exception of Jordans (which I would never wear as an older guy)

Chukka boots were originally issued to WW2 British officers commanding in North Africa. So, after the war, in Britain they have become a classy and elitist choice for dressing casually. However, in the US, the army elites don't wear them, and the old school people are not getting used to looking at them. Therefore, chukka boots are still a novelty item for some people.

I wear a lot of all black bc I’m a gigging musician so I just integrate that into my casual wardrobe with either t-shirts with blazers or jeans with my button downs and I just make it sleek and uniform with black sneakers. I do like charcoal pants with a black top and occasionally the white v-neck. lol, I also wear the dress sneaker with a suit with a t-shirt instead of button down

I also have PTSD from an all black sneaker. Anytime I wasn't performing at Disney and was in a guest facing role I had to wear a black sneaker. They could never be cute or stylish at all because comfort mattered more than anything. A cheap-ass Dr Scholl's totally black sneaker saved my feet on long days, haha! I love them and I hate them with the fire of a thousand suns.

I wanted to give you some feedback on this 2 months old video. Well : Thank you very much, I used to dress poorly in my twenties but after reaching 30 I knew I could keep doing it (I do a lot of sports and I was comfortable dressed in Adidas, Nike or Puma). You made me understand why fashion is important and I like the style that you show. I try to make and effort that I am sure my wife will like though if I had to be honest when I go to the shop I see a lot of shoes with slight variations, forget which one I came for and it feels like a headache...

I think this list is spot-on in the right mindset: if a guy has a smaller shoe collection. If you only own 4 pairs of shoes then dress oxfords, white sneakers, penny loafers, and service boots are about as good as it gets. However, if you have two dozen pairs of shoes, the dress oxfords start to get a little boring. I find myself reaching for monkstraps, wingtips, and brogued dress boots a lot more.
I'm a little older than you so I was not in college during the boat shoe craze. I think boat shoes are the perfect replacement for flipflops.

I have like about 15 pairs of formal leather shoes ... Chelsea, Oxfords, Monks but for last 2 years i love couple of my new Penny Loafers the most (because of how comfortable yet classy they are during the spring, summer for formal meetings) it´s simply much easier than to tie laces everyday on Oxfords ... and best cowboy shoes style i´ve seen comes from Lenny Kravitz !

and agree with tassel loafer - it´s not for everyday formal business meeting, at least here in Europe, people are not used to wear that at all and always staring at it like their mind can´t get it !

I thought the Cole Haan shoes deserved a much higher ranking. Wouldn’t buy the particular pair used in the video but I am a 24 yr old guy live in SoCal. They are my go to shoes for full suit or blazer w jeans or khakis because of the knitted material that is breathable for warmer weather, unique, stylish and very comfortable compared to other dress shoes.

It's crazy how some Jordan's can cost you 300 plus when a good leather boot/shoe for 200 and will out live a Jordan. Great video. Keep up the good work.
