This bass line is Epic. Peter is just workin' this audience. He has a great stage presence...and he has matured very well. The voice is still strong and effortless...plus...appears he is having real FUN! And the COAT is Iconic!! Why that little flute flourish in the song gets me everytime, it is just magical! Keep rockin' Peter!!!
This is the best version of this song by miles. Adjusted to give respect to Peter being older and his voice being what it is now. If this was recorded like this now, it might top the charts again!
No way, man. The Secret World version blows this away. PG is about a hundred times more animated, so much so that he’s practically hyperactive! All while managing to sound great. Paula Cole is on another level completely. The whole song is just so much more energetic and joyous. And as it’s an energetic and joyous song, that can only be a good thing. I saw the Growing Up concert live and it was great. But it wasn’t a patch on Secret World. That was peak PG.
@@VGILee Agree!!! Secret World is in a universe unlike any other Gabriel performance. He, the band and Paula are at the top of their form in that tour. It NEVER gets old listening to/watching that concert!!!
I remember this when the MTV video came out, remember MTV when thats what it was? Music Television, then they had to mess it up to what it became, oh well..anyway.. I remember when I was able to play it really loud with 150w with 12" louds...amazing! Since then I have always liked this song and the orig. claymation video. I just found this vid showing that..we all get older, but Peter still has it. Great artists like this just arent around as much these days. I cherish the good old rock n roll, Rock n Roll forever!
"This Day in Music" - 26 July 1986, Peter Gabriel went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Sledgehammer', a No.4 hit in the UK. The song's music video has won a number of awards, including a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards. Gabriel was also nominated for three Grammy Awards. As of 2011, 'Sledgehammer' is the most played music video in the history of MTV.
"Sledgehammer" replaced "Invisible Touch" as number 1 on the US charts. Who would have thought in the 70's that a band as progressive as Genesis would have 2 singers with tremendous commercial success.
Es un honor haber disfrutado de este concierto en los primeros 80 en San Sebastián de Peter Gabriel uno de los compositores más geniales de la música moderna
I was probably 3 years old when my sister and father were listening to this song whileI was dancing to the funky bassline. Today I m 33, and making my nephews dance to this song. This song should be preserved for future generations
A true performer and real artist can still be appreciated in 2022. This man is working all POVs and so is his crew. Bravo, and give this Sledgehammer his flowers!
I had this live DVD when it came out, it was magic. I love all the footage of the AV crew besides the talented artists. I got to see two tours of Peter and friends, including his daughter, Melody. To this day, he puts on the best show of anyone I've seen. It's as if he sat in every seat and asked, "How's the view from here?"
That bass line added 15 years to my life...
that's the greatest fucking comment I've ever read...
you may have actually added a few years to mine 😎
Tony Levin will have that effect on ya.
that bass line is in-freakin-sane
😆
*BASS !!* 🎸
That bass line, changed everything. It kicks ass in 2025
Toni Levin is s genius !
I didn't kick the habit. I'm still listening to this song.
Shed my skin tho
It sounds gae
It ain't the new stuff anymore but we still go dancing in.
Me, too. :)
Es para la eternidad amigo!🎉
Peter, soul of Genesis...magic!
Love that he and Phil still have a great relationship shame they never worked together much after Genesis
You're telling me that guy is killing the bass and dancing? God.
Genius ❤
He'd be about 70 here...just to rub it in 🤣🤣
Tony Levin is not of this world I am convinced
It’s a bad ass bass line for sure!
It may not be "the new stuff" anymore, but it still resonates today in 2024!
Tony Levin...what a master of the bass.
I would love to get him alone so he can explain that whole playing the base with sticks. Sounds brilliant, looks insane
I saw Tony Levin playing with King Crimson in 1984 on the "Three of a Perfect Pair" tour. "Sleepless" off that album is Tony at his best, IMO.
Coat is SICK 🔥
Amazing bass!!!!! Oush!!!!!!!
Yes, he is 🎼🎸
One of the best sounding songs ever created
One of the best lyrics too.
I always thought it was some studio gizmos that were making him sound like that. But no, he’s actually that good.
My son is learning to play this song on the drums, he's only 3 yo. That's my legacy to this world.
THAT is cool!
Thank you!
Good start playing drums! 👍
Oh yeah...

This guy put on a red dress and a fox head in the 70s and he’s been blowing minds ever since
This man has a sensational live singing voice.
Tony Levin's base playing is always brilliant but he smashes it on this performance

Who is still listening with me in 2024?❤

Why is this stupid trend a thing?

Tony Levin's bass lines are so good they should be prescribed as medicine!

We were blessed to get to grow up with this music.
Great artists are always ahead of Time xxxxx ❤❤❤❤
This song isn’t just musically a masterpiece - it is just pure fun; that’s why it’s still so beloved by millions!
Tony Levin is an absolute beast in any band that he plays in. What a damn legend.
Wow - This bass-line sounds fantastic..... !!!

I totally agree, but I honestly would like to see more of his backup singers, they are rocking like on another level!

Peter Gabriel is the only man who can make stadium shows feel intimate.
Tell me you never saw Jerry Garcia live without telling me you never saw Jerry Garcia live.
Not Michael Jackson? 😸
A Masterpiece for all time - "Rockius Rollious"
Growing up in the 80s was an amazing experience. We had the best music and musicians. Cheers from America.

Very few artists do I find are better live than in studio. Peter Gabriel is one of those artists. So natural and refined
Tony Levin is the "Master Bass Player"!!! Hands down!!!
“Delicate Sound of Gabriel”
What makes you think of that? I'm curious.
@@flops0317 Pink Floyd reference

Dammmmmnnnnnnn, that bass is killing it, what a job!!!!!!
As a bass player myself i can say that Tony's basslines are to die for. I can play them at about 90% accuracy.
He utilizes him to the max. Tony's sound is like an exclamation point to his words. Beautiful.
@@mistatt2 They are great as is he, one of my bass idols! Made it my duty to play his style.
