And they had an entire cable network dedicated to just playing all these great music videos 24/7/365. I think it's was called MTV or something. Wonder what ever happened to them....
CLARA ELIA I was moreso getting at the fact that 80’s music is more or less an artistic dumping ground, and if anything this song is a very high watermark.
My Mom was one to put MTV on, open up the windows, and do her housework on the weekends. This was the video I would be hoping was next after each one. Lol- it was so exciting when I would hear that very first little opening music!
This video brings back so much joy from my childhood. Super cool to include all the amazing people that helped make the video possible in the UA-cam version. Respect.
I love that bass in this song, strong solid drum beat, and Peter's voice cuts through it perfectly, really bumps on a good system, gets the feet moving
The bas is Tony Levin, one of the greatest session musicians out there. He was in King Crimson for a while (that's a whole nother rabbit hole you can go down) and has played on so many great albums. He created "funk fingers" and was an early adopter of the Chapman Stick, a kind of tapping bass instrument. If you liked the bass in this song please check him out.
@@sabatino1977 Levin is phenomenal,, doesn't get enough credit sometimes I think. I love the "funk fingers" concept, really innovative especially for the time,.. I think in this one he even utilized an octave pedal to give it an even bigger sound, awesome stuff 👍
@@LomuHabana, it's okay for people to acknowledge the times and places when everyone hasn't gotten along. In the 80s, when this song came out, plenty of Black adults and youth in the U.S. weren't always shouting about the good music made by white people. In the 80s, plenty of whites were still hiding liking rap. Thus, it's fine to highlight, in that time, the artists that were appreciated regardless of color.
@@shannonsmith6806, not quite sure about that "by-the-numbers". It doesn't start off like a Motown. And Motown songs wouldn't have as much loud bass as this song. In a Motown song, there'd be more harmonizing and vocals from the back-up singers. Motown wouldn't be implying kicking a drug habit. I hope you don't think that melody and harmonizing back-up vocals don't make something a Motown wanna-be.
@shesbaldbutiwould They suck in comparison. They both write the same old rehashed angsty heart broke shit music that is in surplus. Nothing talented or ground breaking about them.
One of the best grooves of all time. As good as Peter Gabriel is, Tony Levin deserves his mention for the bass track. Unreal and they have so much fun playing this live
Levin is a legendary bass player. I'm a big Dream Theater fan and I love his work with Liquid Tension Experiment. He's an integral part of PG's sound as you say, as are David Rhodes, Manu Katche and others (including Phil Collins, for a limited time).
@Bob Thompson Woah, that’s great to hear. Unfortunately, I wasn’t even born yet. Hey, at least, I could watch live videos but nowhere in hell it can compare to the actual live
I think "Steam" is probably Levin's best work with PG, but there's a lot to choose from. Actually, "Secret World" has amazing bass too, and is probably PG's most underrated song (along with Make Tomorrow).
Nope. But I remember when pop music at this particular time was talked about like pop music is today. (I.e: it sucked) And when pop music before it was talked about like pop music of this particular time. (I.e: the most glorious thing ever). And the wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round.
Can't believe I finally found it. Haven't seen this in decades, nobody I know ever brings up this song and I couldn't remember the name or the singer, but after all these years UA-cam recommendations have finally blessed me with it. It's such an odd feeling, like meeting your childhood friend for the first time in 30 years and unlike you he hasn't aged one bit.
Same here. And the dancing chickens were in my uncanny valley 😂

Two of my all time favorites, Peter Gabriel and Steve Winwood are two musical geniuses cut from the same mold. If Steve sung Peter's songs you would think it was Peter, and if Peter sang Steve's songs, you would think it was Steve. Its a weird thing that happens with Peter Gabriels songs. I didnt even listen to his music, and now its been two weeks I cant stop listening to his hits uninterruptedly. What is it!?? 😱

ajshell2 mtv music awards are worthless piles of crap.
@@KM-wz1oh MTV awards mattered back then - Both Sledgehammer and Take on Me are amazing videos from an era where music videos were still a big deal and taken seriously by the companies, the artists and the public alike
Videos of the 80's were so wild, crazy, and creative I miss this!
And they had an entire cable network dedicated to just playing all these great music videos 24/7/365. I think it's was called MTV or something. Wonder what ever happened to them....
Happy 74th Birthday Peter!
Still got it in 2024!!!

THIS SONG IS STILL AS BADASS AS IT EVER WAS.🎉🎉🎉🎉 Genius.
Seriously, one of the best thumbnails on all of YT.
A steam train in front of Peter

The 80's would not exist without this song.
It wouldn’t exist without Intruder
Why would you insult such a great song
CLARA ELIA I was moreso getting at the fact that 80’s music is more or less an artistic dumping ground, and if anything this song is a very high watermark.
you all forget Kate Bush, but we forgive you.
So proud to have been a teenager in the 80's, no other generation will ever get to experience it. That's so sad.
Me too!!
me too
Indeed. Different times.
being a teenager during the 2010s was a trip. I'm sure the 80s was on a whole different level!
Being a teenager in the late 1960's, I have got the entire trip thru music history! Never to be another time like this.
In my opinion this is the most creative video ever made
This truly is a masterpiece. You just don’t see this kind of effort anymore in music videos.
I stumbled onto this song just a few weeks ago, couldnt agree with you more.
You havent looked hard enough. Sleep and Swim Like a Shark and Total Entertainment Forever are masterpieces.
Agree 👍
What a ridiculous thing to say.
The underground UK music scene is very much alive and kicking.
I am 36 years old, and this was absolutely the coolest music video to me as a kid.
And it still is
Agree Shannon. Still is. Peter Gabriel rocks.
I'm 24 and this video is somehow very nostalgic for me. I used to watch it a lot at my uncle's and I still think it's one of the coolest videos
My Mom was one to put MTV on, open up the windows, and do her housework on the weekends. This was the video I would be hoping was next after each one. Lol- it was so exciting when I would hear that very first little opening music!
this and Take on Me (A-ha) .....wash your hands!
This video brings back so much joy from my childhood. Super cool to include all the amazing people that helped make the video possible in the UA-cam version. Respect.
Sounds great
Absolutely! I can close my eyes and go back to jr high. I have the vinyl album. Good stuff.
Omg! I think of my childhood also! My parents were cool hippie like. They definitely know good music
This whole album is a masterpiece.. Also a huge part of my life . I am truly greatful to have this in my life .. Thank you Thomas Dolby
The groove of this song is insane... It's impossible don't move the head or a feet at time!🕺
I can listen to this song forever. The bass sound is fabulous. And one of the greatest music videos ever made. I love the 80's
Tony Levin, say no more.
Louis Minett I listen to it once and have to hear it again. It rocks so sweetly!
Take on Me, this, and Thriller.
Everyone can agree they are the greatest music videos of all time.
Unfortunately, that decade is a blur to me.
What a song. The music video tripped me out as a kid.
40 years later - still one of the greatest visual achievements I've ever had the pleasure to see.
Yup, and I still laugh at him. Cool video though 😎

Us 80's kids were totally awesome 😎
Amen.
Lucky you

One of the greatest masterpieces in music history, both the video as well as the song.
This was totally one of those songs that Black people ain't have no problem jamming to! Like stuff by The Police and Sting!
@@a.taylor8294 I’d say that goes for every color. Be it white, Asian, Māori/Pacific Islander or black. Just incredible music.
@@shannonsmith6806 I disagree, I find it to be a very subtle song where, as with most songs by PG, you here the nuances and every instrument.

@@Thenineoh yeah cause ed sheeran and lewis capaldi are giving beckham a run for his money

One of the best grooves of all time. As good as Peter Gabriel is, Tony Levin deserves his mention for the bass track. Unreal and they have so much fun playing this live
According to Peter Gabriel, "Sledgehammer" is what he calls his penis and this is an ode to his penis/sex life.
Levin is a legendary bass player. I'm a big Dream Theater fan and I love his work with Liquid Tension Experiment. He's an integral part of PG's sound as you say, as are David Rhodes, Manu Katche and others (including Phil Collins, for a limited time).
@@robicenco1 His works on King Crimson are phenomenal.
In my opinion one of the best music videos of all time, plus the tune is absolutely superb.
Agreed!
Before greedy Jews fucked everything up. God bless the Western world.
They don't make music videos like this anymore. Single handedly one of the most creative ones I've ever seen!
Remember when "pop" music used to be incredible? This is a spectacularly written song in every sense of the word.
Nope. But I remember when pop music at this particular time was talked about like pop music is today. (I.e: it sucked)
And when pop music before it was talked about like pop music of this particular time. (I.e: the most glorious thing ever).
And the wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round.
+banklikefrankwhite1

except musician didn't talk about it like that. See that's the difference.
Remember when trolls used to be able to read? I said incredible, not good. Lots of stuff out there is good, very little is incredible or spectacular.
Remember when people used to be less uptight about others disagreeing with them? No? Neither do I. Carry on.
Welcome back!

Two of my all time favorites, Peter Gabriel and Steve Winwood are two musical geniuses cut from the same mold. If Steve sung Peter's songs you would think it was Peter, and if Peter sang Steve's songs, you would think it was Steve. Peter Gabriel had to repeat the song lyrics just under nine million times as they built the train tracks around his head.
