i feel like they should turn mundo's w back into a toggle ability. but make it so that he takes a massive damage over time if he's not hitting somebody with it, and not getting grey health if he's not hitting somebody with it
Heres an idea He deals damage around him (and himself) and gains tenacity like the old one, but after 3 seconds he applies grievous wounds to himself until he turns it off. That would incentivize using it sparingly at the right moments. Maybe you can even do something like, he loses 5% healing and shielding power for every second its up, until it's turned off
I used to main Aurelion Sol because how much i simped for Ao Shin. When he lost the toggle on his W i slowly stopped playing him, and just used him from time to time. While the fast stars were better for short trades he lost a lot of pressure in teamfights. I do play the new one and find it really fun, but sometimes I miss the old ASol
Asol was pretty much removed from the game. What we have now is not asol, but a different champion entirely. At least champions like fiddle and Evelynen kept a resemblance in their rework. Asol’s only resemblance to his old self is his ability to fly through walls. Which 30% of the roster can already do.
In Heroes of the Storm one of the examples of a good Toggle ability is Zul'Jins (D) Berserk. When toggled, ZJ gains 25% AD and Attack Speed based on the amount of missing health at the cost of 2% HP per auto attack. A very simple very integral mechanic that his whole kit revolves around. Very fun hero!
Part of this is also that mana interaction has been minimized e.g. Swain, Veigar, Singed, and Lissandra passives. The more mana hungry champs like AP Zilean, Ziggs, post-6 Anivia could spam high damage abilities but would have to build multiple items whose primary purpose was giving mana (Athenes/Seraphs/RoA) and needed every blue buff after the first one. Gradually I think they've reduced costs and damage, and with Lost Chapter and its mana items (Ludens, Morello etc.) with functionality other than pure stats I think was overall it makes the game more interesting
I straight up hate the newest Asol rework. It removed everything I liked about playing aurelion sol, and replaced it with some hyperscaling kayle-ass bs. I tried to like it, but I just don't. I think the pattern is no less toxic to play against than it used to be, but now it's easier to pull off, and more boring to play. It's always a huge bummer to see an Asol on the enemy team now.
You didn't mention old Ashe's frost shot. Her slow used to be a toggle that consumed mana to do the on hit slow while her passive was crit that built up as long as you weren't attacking. Late game, there was no reason to turn off her slow I'd you built any mana item.
The reason could be anything, but in theory it does make sense to make something that you have no reason to turn off a passive, but they kinda have a habit to turn skills into passives what the character looks like Ash's arrow seems to be always on ice but why doesn't it slow? Graves weapon is a shotgun but it's now always a pellet round? I've seen better "Ashe's" in other mobas, like Garo in Heroes/Honor(name depends on region) of Kings, HoK also has a better graves named Liu Bei. They also have a better more fluid Morde named Hai Yue just look up "New Legendary Skin Hai Yue" Now I may look like a League hater but u know I used to love League, when they make good decisions like Arena or URF it's temporary, but when they made bad decisions like removed chest from BP and removed all rerolls -- it's permanent. Like most if not all of their employees, we need to move on.
One toggle I hated to love and loved to hate was Cho'Gath spikes. Because when Deathfire Touch mastery was a thing, you could easily open with them and any melee opponent would get hit by the spikes and since Deathfire Touch triggered on ability damage, it was pretty much having a Teemo's Toxic Shot without worrying to lose CS since you didn't had to choose between harass or farming.
I feel like Shaco E can be an example of a toggle as well, except the way you toggle it is the opposite to all of the rest; you have to NOT use the ability for the effect to turn on. And then the effect goes on cooldown while the ability itself is on cd. While, yes, a max-rank 30% slow applied with each melee auto attack is pretty negligible in the modern day due to all of the mobility in the game, and Shaco would rather just use his E, I thought it would be worth bringing it up anyway. It’s a very interesting ability that, if I recall correctly, is the only “toggle ability” of its kind despite how weak it is lol.
Another toggle was ashe's old Q. This used to be where her slow was, and you'd have to pay a flat mana cost each shot to slow people. Meanwhile, her actual passive used to be a guaranteed critical strike after not attacking for a few seconds.
I love playing singed for his simplicity intogle and steroid ulty, what he lacks in complicated abilities the skill expression came whit how to tf, macro and mana usage
I feel like toggles moving to passives is the right choice overall unless they have specific reasons not to, like urgot w. For mainly the reasons you talk about here. Once the cost of the toggle is 'negated' its just always left on. An example would be old ashe (which wasnt mentioned in the video). If they ever got around to updating amumu i believe is tear zone would be great as a passive for him. Also if new morde was released in old league his passive would 100% be a toglle ability
I was kinda stunned when i discovered some toggle abilities in DOTA have actives. But toggle on/off if you click them on your hud too. (Viper's empowered attacks, sven's upgraded Q) So far i have only played like 20 matches but it has a lot of good ideas not seen in league.
I’ve always found that Dota operates on if everyone is broken no one is mentality. After all can you imagine a league champ with a global teleport as a basic ability.
@@Lodit24 Look into Nature's Prophet and Rat Strats guy can global teleport every 20ish seconds and builds boots that let him TP to minions and he just bounces back and forth across the map spawning mini Ents that are as tanky as canon minions. Easy top ten ways to make the enemy tilt.
@@Sir_L.Wallaceyou forgot one thing. Counter pick and counter item exists in DOTA 2. These do exist in League like Serpent Fang or Quick Silversash. But in DOTA 2, every items serve as a buff to oneself, whole team (aura) or a counter against certain match up. This applies to heroes as well
Since rammus's two things are speed and armor, it would be cool if his thornmail ability would be a toggle between greatly increased speed and greatly increased armor+thornmail. He could use some love and skill expression.
I surprised you didn't mention old ashe. Her current passive to slow on auto attacks used to be a toggle ability. This was a long time ago and forget when they changed it.
Thats why anivia ult works so well. Since the ult is fixed in place and needs to ramp up you need to to be certain where to place it. Also since you cant move too far away without it deactivating you basically lock yourself to a small area if you want to keep the storm going. Meaning you have to manage your use of the ability like aurelion or urgot have to
Back in the day, the hardest champions for me to get used to were Nidalee and Elise, not because of them having seven abilities each but because in teamfights if there happened to be a lot of spell effects going off and spamming abilities are quickly as possible was necessary, it could be slightly challenging sometimes to tell which form you were in at any given time. I started using conspicuously colored skins which probably made me more of a target just so I could see myself better. These days 'particle storms' are an even bigger problem but Niddykitty and Elise are among my most played champs. It's a shame there won't be more like them. Champs like Hwei (neo-Karma) and Aphelios are the 'improved' version of shapeshift toggles.
Well, it is an interesting topic. I always asked myself why an old Sivir or Chogath would rather not use toggle. It is better in the way it is now, since there is not a great difference (except for animation kill etc.). But Urgot's, Anivia's and Asol's abilities have a meaning the way they are. I would like to see more like them. Also, old Aatrox had a great toggle effect, which made his gameplay far more interesting.
Well Sivir and Cho'Gath greatly benefit from the change, with the added the Autoattack reset on activation. You can see reworked toggle abilities have been split into two groups: Passive vs Active. Passive abilities like Sion and Ashe were so powerful, you had no reason to toggle off except for cost, so they removed the cost and lowered the power. Then abilities like Sivir, Cho'Gath, Mundo, Udyr were contextually strong, but still weak in general, so they focused the power into immediate activation. Reworking in "Opportunity cost" that OP mentioned.
I think Urgot W is the most skill expressive toggle in the game because you need to consider its usage in every fight, wave clear, tower push, etc for best value. A Sol is cool but with E and Rylais it seems more dependent on the champs he faces than skill expressive usage. For example low mobility champs can’t move through the slows and just get vomited on to death. High mobility Hampshire bypass that. But with Urgot you have to constantly consider the ramifications of your toggle
I do think that toggles would be so much better if they had ramping costs and ramping damage. Like 15 mana per sec +5 per every sec but the damage increases by 5+1% ap too. Then when you toggle it off the mana cost starts going down slowly (-5 mana per second) but the damage resets faster. Meaning that spamming the toggle is bad an you can either forcethe opponent to overcomit and reengage when he lost a good portion of his damage in order to burn his resourses. And you as a player get to either draw the fights for long or do small conteolled bursts before a long fight.
Best thing about the old swain ult is that it had a low cool down (at one patch you could go lower than 10 seconds) the downside is it only target 3 enemy and unless you get a shutdown your mana is gone after 5-10 seconds.
When you said at least Asol’s toggle is different from walking and using it, the main thing I dislike is he goes through terrain and it’s hella fast and he has other things to kill with, it’s more low risk than you think. He isn’t subjected to just his toggle ability. His main gimmick is his scaling, ult, and traversing. He’s basically a roaming mage, different from Vex and Hwei. He can play in any game state, roaming or farming, and still is relevant behind. He’s like Kayle in the way his win con works.
I know they aren't a toggle in the relative sense that you were going for, but after mentioning Udyr, I was a little disappointed that old Sona auras weren't brought up. Even if they couldn't be "turned off and on" they still represented the old style of league's "actively passive" abilities that toggles still hold as their identity.
I believe toggles should be in the game. And for all of the reasons that you talk about why they are good or bad. Honestly I dislike that people want everything to be the same level of super high mechanical skill. There is so much more to the game than just mechanical skill. And it's nice to play the game sometimes being more focused on macro or even micro decision making. Than the game feeling like a dong measuring contest of who can push buttons faster and better to rack up a high kill count. Good toggles are good choice. As much as Bad toggles are bad choice/no choice. Same thing with some of the "skill based" abilities that aren't hard to use and are either in a state of OP or nerfed so hard it's just useless.
old Udyr top was an odd ball, basically having infinite sustain with just one cast of his W, i see why they change him from a stance changer/toggle only user to a character with actual abilities and a pseudo ultimate.
I think the baseline here, is toggle abilites are just all around frustrating, there is no waiting it out, or typically no playing around it, its like having an ability you never have to worry about the CD on
Recently returned to play Karthus and even feel brave to go rank after some practice. Trough this journey i saw a nostalgic vibel like never before using the E ability.
Can you cover the topic of certain skins that are Pay to Win or Pay to Lose. -What makes said skins are P2W or P2L. -How certain skins aren't P2W or P2L but simply feel better or worse to players.(Placebo effect) -etc. I feel like this can go for different champs opening up a new series of videos or can be covered in one video.
Honestly i wish Kindred came out back in the time they made toggle abilities. cus i am sure they would give us ability to swap between shooting arrows as lamb and biting as wolf just like Needale can.
They're nice. Although most of the time I would prefer to have a "normal" ability. But they sure are something that is worth keeping and they sould definitely add more of them in the future.
Don't know if it's been mentioned in the comments, Old Ashe Q for the slow was toggle and old Moakai ultimate was toggle, and i may be incorrect but weren't evelynn and twitch invis toggle as well back in old league?
At least there was no specific Singed-bashing this time. Even though I heavily disaggree with neutral being "boring", especially as a counter measure. Maybe its me having played too much WoW, but I feel like "DONT STAND IN THE FIRE" is and will always be a viable thing to have. Not my fault ppl chose to keep smelling my armpits when I'm running around. Toggles offer simple solutions to counter, so it's on the user to use them properly, other than "engaging" champions that just project themselves into your personal space with the respectfulnes and nuance of a nuclear device. It's basicly either you have to make your own abillities work, or your oponent has to stay in base if they dont want to feed, because you picked Yone and Riot thinks Yone is "fun".
As the years go on. I miss old Sion more and more. I've played since s1. My first main was AD sion then AP, then switched to Udyr, and pantheon. All 3 of them have been reworked Sion and Pantheon feel great but Udyr is still missing some things and needs to be tweaked. However, that will never happen. 🐻 >> 🐏
I always notice how champs with short ult cooldowns have a long cooldown passive. Corki, Anivia and Udyr come to mind. Relevant for this video, Anivia passive means that even though her abilities are practically always up, she still has moments of relative weakness depending on if her passive is avaliable
Udyr doesn't have ult, he has 4 basic abilities. But they updated his code a few patches ago and now Ultimate Ability Haste works on his passive, and using awaken abilities proc items that proc on ults. (Malignance works only on Q and R)
Ramping mana cost was in paper a good way to prevent permanent toggling of these abilities. However with them only having almost no cooldown its too easy to reset the mana cost.
Could you do a video on removing boots so we have 6 items? Boots can be used a purchasable buffs or chosen during selection? Maybe even a video on having something like Aghanim mechanic from Dota i.e. having Kayn get bonuses from, both Red and Blue on his spells
I miss old swain. Janky as hell champion, but he just felt so unique and his ability to drain was so fun. Old mundo was my shit too. Going full ad the with crit and bopping them with 500 ad at low health was so funny.
Toggle abilities that become permanent if you get a resource shouldnt be looked at as a infinite neutral game it should be looked at as a champion evolution similar to syndras stacks. Toggle abilities are unique in the sense that they are completely differnt abilities in differnt senarios. Old mundos w was so costly to use that he would typically die before he could kill you. But if you were against a fed mundo his w would evolve into an inevitable tick of death. Amumus w evolves from a consistant sunfire into a baron killer. Riot could have done something similar to warwick if they made his e cost him health at the exchange for more movespeed. Also after looking at his old splashart i realized how fucking cool warwick used to look. Honestly makes current warwick look like a pizzafeet splash.
Aurelion Sol is not affected by Singed's W. He can use Astral flight Singed's W. Even though it specifically says "A unit that is grounded is unable to activate movement spells for the duration." Or is Riot justifying this stupid oversight with "but he flies all the time so he can't be grounded". Oh yeah? Then why is he slowed in it if it doesn't affect him? This must be a bug.
il be honest, i like simple champs that just statcheck you (old volibear/sion being prime examples) but toggle abilities just feel meh and boring in most cases, you usualy dont eaven see a deference weather they are on or off, it just does its damage but doesnt feel like anything special, swains old ult being the one exception, it felt epic just pressing a button and seeing your hp just refill in seconds and it worked becouse the rest of his kit was just bad
I think is old kit was actually better than the new one. Old kit had higher effective dmg range and more guaranteed dmg. You basically couldn't miss anything other than W, but with Q it was pretty much a flash or get hit. New swain's kit resolves on hitting your E which is really easy to dodge. If E missed you don't have an opening at all and 0 abilities to follow up with. Q is not good on max range, but the champ is too squishy to step up in shotgun range. W cannot be used to hit un cc'ed targets unless they aren't paying attention. The champ relies on Q as the only good source of dmg which is another issue due to the effectiveness of it's range. Only thing new swain has over the old one is higher potential dmg output due to Q being very low cd but other than that he feels terrible.
I thought Udyr stances and ASol balls were such unique mechanics that no other character had and then they just reworked them to be basic abilities that every other character does
I think toggles are perfectly fine, hell better than the fad of giving everyone a dash, shield, or a form of immunity to a type of damage. Nothing wrong with unga bunga 'turn on or off' abilities, and I love playing Urgot so yeah know.

i feel like they should turn mundo's w back into a toggle ability. but make it so that he takes a massive damage over time if he's not hitting somebody with it, and not getting grey health if he's not hitting somebody with it
It would still have the same problem. Turn on when fighting, turn off when not, very braindead ability.
It's what it dues not hell slot of mundos don't even use it
if he takes dmg with it on, he'd never have it on
Heres an idea
He deals damage around him (and himself) and gains tenacity like the old one, but after 3 seconds he applies grievous wounds to himself until he turns it off. That would incentivize using it sparingly at the right moments. Maybe you can even do something like, he loses 5% healing and shielding power for every second its up, until it's turned off
He used to lol@@stonecat676
2:45 since Patch 10.14, you no longer need to keep Karthus' Defile toggled off to restore mana
I used to main Aurelion Sol because how much i simped for Ao Shin. When he lost the toggle on his W i slowly stopped playing him, and just used him from time to time. While the fast stars were better for short trades he lost a lot of pressure in teamfights. I do play the new one and find it really fun, but sometimes I miss the old ASol
the ultimate getting them to W range was really interesting
i didn't main him or anything but do like playing mages from time to time
Asol was pretty much removed from the game. What we have now is not asol, but a different champion entirely. At least champions like fiddle and Evelynen kept a resemblance in their rework. Asol’s only resemblance to his old self is his ability to fly through walls. Which 30% of the roster can already do.
Thank you for your amazing content. Even though I stoped playing over 2 years ago, I still enjoy watching your videos. Keep it up
Becoming fed enough on Karthus to BM kill someone with only your E while they do all kinds of fancy shit to escape you is such a good feeling.
@@lunacy5510 I can taste the salt from here
You forgot the 1st Taric Últimamente, when he uses a lot of mana for healing himself and get AD for his allies
HOTS MENTIONNED LETS GOOOO
old sion & aatrox be like
@@CarmenLC except has no access to lifesteal, he has to exit combat to use his self-heal so its less of a stance swap like old Aatrox
Thank you for contributing so much valuable content to this community! I miss the old Swain's ultimate... 😢
Old ASol and Swain were the design of god, i miss them so much 😢
Teemos E used to be a toggle but it did not have down side to be on so they did change it🙂
New Vars Video I come here for the yapping every time
🗣️🗣️🗣️
They also have a better more fluid Morde named Hai Yue just look up "New Legendary Skin Hai Yue"
Now I may look like a League hater but u know I used to love League, when they make good decisions like Arena or URF it's temporary, but when they made bad decisions like removed chest from BP and removed all rerolls -- it's permanent.
I'd like to add Taric's first ultimate to the list. It healed him while it was active and gave AD to him and his nearby allies.
I played cho'gath some time last year and I was surplrised I had to press his E. I'm used to the version that we kept on
I feel like Shaco E can be an example of a toggle as well, except the way you toggle it is the opposite to all of the rest; you have to NOT use the ability for the effect to turn on. It’s a very interesting ability that, if I recall correctly, is the only “toggle ability” of its kind despite how weak it is lol.
i miss old mundo so much, i loved his old w having a 30% tenacity aoe damage aura was so fun
Another toggle was ashe's old Q. This used to be where her slow was, and you'd have to pay a flat mana cost each shot to slow people. Meanwhile, her actual passive used to be a guaranteed critical strike after not attacking for a few seconds.
i miss old ASol stars
(Viper's empowered attacks, sven's upgraded Q)
So far i have only played like 20 matches but it has a lot of good ideas not seen in league.
I’ve always found that Dota operates on if everyone is broken no one is mentality. After all can you imagine a league champ with a global teleport as a basic ability.
@@Sir_L.Wallace Whoever designed release Twisted Fate apparently could.
This applies to heroes as well
Vayne has smth like that in wild rift, so does tf, unironically.
Not toggles but passives
I loved Swain's old ult.. such a unique ability and it was so powerful!!
Since rammus's two things are speed and armor, it would be cool if his thornmail ability would be a toggle between greatly increased speed and greatly increased armor+thornmail. He could use some love and skill expression.
Is that... Hollow Bastion in the background?!
Yessir
I surprised you didn't mention old ashe. Her current passive to slow on auto attacks used to be a toggle ability. This was a long time ago and forget when they changed it.
I think they changed it in their big marksman update, where Graves was turned into a semi melee and Kog'Maw would have double attack speed during W.
@@Kuptain it was before that, closer to the Soraka update
2:33 While ammumu and Karthus project an aura with a radius around them that damages any baddie within range.
I'm surprised to not hear any mention of old Sona. Your abilities would swap 'stances' to provide a different aura (AD & AP, Armor & MR, or MS).
Look, all I’m gonna say is, the music taste for these videos is golden.
It would be fun to make video on auras, as well.
Back when they thought the game will have deeper mechanics, the remainder from Dota, than it eventually did....
Rip old Morde
Rip old Aatrox
Man, I can recognize this music anywhere.
-How certain skins aren't P2W or P2L but simply feel better or worse to players.(Placebo effect)
-etc.
I feel like this can go for different champs opening up a new series of videos or can be covered in one video.
Honestly i wish Kindred came out back in the time they made toggle abilities. cus i am sure they would give us ability to swap between shooting arrows as lamb and biting as wolf just like Needale can.
I desperately miss old Swain. I absolutely love the current one but the nostalgia I feel from old Swain is very strong.
Makes me miss Mundo's burning agony, it was so fun to chase people with it
you forget the most important one :D ashe's passive was her q. she had to toggle it on and used mana for slowing the target
I remember playing old Swain in urf, I just didn’t turn off his ult. It was super fun!
To this day I regret not trying Sion out before his rework
Zoe who can use hers in every ability
Udyr doesn't have ult, he has 4 basic abilities. But they updated his code a few patches ago and now Ultimate Ability Haste works on his passive, and using awaken abilities proc items that proc on ults. (Malignance works only on Q and R)
Wait is that kingdom hearts
It is!
magikarpusedfly gameplay in a vars video is a crazy crossover
Ramping mana cost was in paper a good way to prevent permanent toggling of these abilities. However with them only having almost no cooldown its too easy to reset the mana cost.
There is nothing I want more in league than old swain and earlier seasons 5-7. The game was good back then and swain was all I ever wanted.
i miss old Aatrox so much, his W was so unique i really loved,
u eaither use for low damage high life steal or high damage costing ur health
i miss the old asol, new one is so brain dead easy
Old asol was so much fun. His mecha skin also is so much worse off without his rockets.
Could you do a video on removing boots so we have 6 items? Boots can be used a purchasable buffs or chosen during selection? Maybe even a video on having something like Aghanim mechanic from Dota i.e. having Kayn get bonuses from, both Red and Blue on his spells
would be nice to have aghanims scepter and shard equivalent
I miss old swain. Janky as hell champion, but he just felt so unique and his ability to drain was so fun. Old mundo was my shit too. Going full ad the with crit and bopping them with 500 ad at low health was so funny.
Vars stop making me think about the old Swain, i miss him so much.
Honestly it hurt to watch this, so many old builds and champs u cannot have anymore
2:32 Then its a good thing Im not near either one of them, it truly is a pain to be such a baddie 🙄💅✨
I am a big fan of toggle abilities personally, several of my favourite champs historically have had them
Toggle abilities that become permanent if you get a resource shouldnt be looked at as a infinite neutral game it should be looked at as a champion evolution similar to syndras stacks.
Honestly makes current warwick look like a pizzafeet splash.
glad my main amumu has been getting some love more recently
Swain’s old R was really satisfying 😢
Funny thing a sol can move while using q in wild rift he's really slow during it, but it's kinda broken, I would say he's kinda pick or ban
I miss Swains old ult. It was my favorite ability in the entire game.
Cause riot hate fun
Are there any champions that still encourage neutral play in the same way the toggle champs used to?
Honestly, I wish they'd bring back some of these especially udyr His old abilities felt so much better
the kingdom hearts music in the back is making me nostalgic
Aurelion Sol is not affected by Singed's W. He can use Astral flight Singed's W. Even though it specifically says "A unit that is grounded is unable to activate movement spells for the duration."
Or is Riot justifying this stupid oversight with "but he flies all the time so he can't be grounded".
I know swain ult is better now, but i still preferred the og, it was just a lot cooler and had better visual clarity with the crows
Imagine if they introduced a new champion who straight up stole Asols stars, right down to the ability.
Old Sion my first true love! Just press R and you magically heal your entire team with your ulti and that attack speed :D
