  • Kayla, 29, and Andrew Picciuto Elia, 33, spent just over $12,000 for a 18-person wedding that had a sticker price of $40,000. They got married on July 17th, 2020 in Santa Barbara, CA. The couple asked friends and wedding industry colleagues to donate or trade their services to save money on their big day.
This story is part of CNBC Make It’s Millennial Marriage series, which profiles couples around the world and details how they planned and paid for their wedding.
When Kayla and Andrew Picciuto Elia got engaged in February 2020, they dreamed of a 300-person Memorial Day wedding, complete with numerous musical acts, an epic dance floor and free-flowing wine.
But when the pandemic hit in early 2020, they knew they had to change their plans. The Santa Barbara residents decided to cancel their big May wedding in favor of an intimate ceremony and dinner with just 18 family members in July. It was still “glamorous” and “divine,” Kayla, 29, says.
The small size and mid-pandemic timing weren’t the only things that made the couple’s big day unique. They spent just over $12,500 for a wedding that had a sticker price of $40,000, thanks to help from their friends and connections in the wedding industry.
“At the end of the day, what we realized was important was family, togetherness and also food,” Andrew, 33, tells CNBC Make It. “Sharing a meal and celebrating with family and breaking bread with family were all the key elements that we wanted to include.”
Pivoting wedding plans amid a pandemic
Andrew first noticed Kayla in 2015 when she took “his” seat in a coffee shop they both frequented. But she was the one who finally broke the ice months later when the coffee shop was evacuated due to a fire alarm. “So what are you reading right now?” she asked as they stood on the sidewalk outside. (His answer: “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck.)
They quickly became close friends and started dating in July 2017. “He spoke the unspeakable and asked if I was in or out,” Kayla remembers. She was all in.
They also started a business together, Party Proper, in December 2017, providing DJ and sound services for weddings in the Santa Barbara area, which they run full-time.
At the end of 2019, they decided they were ready to get married and made vague plans for a wedding at the end of 2020. But when they found out Kayla was pregnant, they decided to speed up the timeline. “We felt an added urgency and excitement to get married as soon as possible,” Andrew says.
“We just did things in our own order, and I’m fine with it,” Kayla says.
They sent out invitations in early March for a Memorial Day celebration. But less than a week later, their home state of California went into lockdown in order to slow the spread of Covid-19. Within a few weeks, it became clear that their big wedding wasn’t going to happen.
They still wanted to get married before the baby arrived. While they knew they could easily go to the courthouse and call it a day, they weren’t sure they wanted to go that route. Would they be disappointed by a smaller guest list? Would a stripped-down version of their vision be just as meaningful?
Ultimately, they decided the wedding was about celebrating their love for each other and pivoted to a small, family-only ceremony and dinner before the arrival of their baby. They hope to be able to plan a bigger party later on. The inspiration for the event went from a music showcase with a crazy dance floor to “a desire to showcase our love for each other,” Andrew says.
“We focused on our baby. We focused on each other. We focused on togetherness,” Kayla says. “These were always values for us, but they had new significance because of the intimacy of our smaller wedding.”

$1k for my wedding, party of 3 (including our dog). $90 for the venue. But that was our preference. We were saving up for our first house, plus I didn't want any family there to stress us out lol. I'll have to make a video about it on my channel, hmmm.

Excellent job, guys. We also spend around $10,000 on our wedding including honeymoon and ring as well. My mother donated her ring to my wife. I believe the average cost for a wedding in Korea is around $50,000 as well. Since my wife and I are Christian, we got married at a church building. It is a lot more expensive to get married in a wedding hall. I honestly don't understand why anyone hates to get married in a church. I think a wedding hall is at least another $10,000 more. This is how we paid off our one bedroom home in the state of California before our kids were born. Yes, our one bedroom home at Lake Forest, CA. Since I did not get accepted to Stanford and went to Berkeley instead, my parents paid off their home at Irvine, CA. I believe the average 3 bedroom home in Irvine, CA is under $300k during the 1990's. In 2020, I believe Berkeley is cheaper than Stanford by under $300k.

I got married for $250 at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. The rings were maybe $100, bought downtown in the wholesale jewelry district of LA. I had just finished my doctorate. We sold all our possessions and took the money to travel around the world for 3 years. It was awesome. Wouldn't exchange that to host an event.

It's a culture thing too. It brings all your friends, family and community joy and closer together. You get to celebrate your love and bring so much joy. Weddings are unnecessarily expensive due to venues and vendors overcharging. I spent $1k on my wedding, party of three lol (including our dog). Bridal makeup was advertised as $160, but a regular full face of makeup was advertised as $70 - there's no difference between the two, but places know they can charge 2-3 times the prices when they throw in the word "wedding" or "bridal".

  • @dominick6131

Very happy they only spent 12.5k on the wedding instead of 40k. 40k invested would grow to $160k by the time the child is 18, enough for college, to start a business, and more. Don't throw away your child's future for a wedding day. Don't do a second wedding. Put that money towards your own and child's future.

Is 12k considered small for a wedding? My wedding in total cost around 14k and I considered it my “big” dream wedding. Around 200 guests. Buffet food. No DJ but a great playlist with great speakers. Pretty poofy white dress. Photographer and videographer. I was planning to spend less but costs add up, but I consider anything over 10k a lot. I’m from Ontario.

We found a restaurant that is open for brunch only on Sundays, and asked if they would stay open for a couple hours after. They agreed. We used the floral table arrangements they already had out for brunch. We asked the flamingo guitarist to stay after brunch and payed him for the background music and asked him if we could use his mic and speaker system for the wedding. Because we got married at 2 in the afternoon, we only did a champagne toast, no other alcohol. The marriage took place within the restaurant in front of a beautiful water feature. The guest could choose from 3 light meals. A pasta, salad or gourmet sandwiches. 60 guests $4000 was our total expenses for a beautiful wedding in Ventura CA!!💕. It can be done!

While I know a bride who has been waiting to get married and paid precovid JUST FOR A VENUE FOR 34K 😂 they aren’t allowed to break their venue contract because they’ll only receive 30% back if they do. Weddings are a rip off. Best advise to save money on a wedding is not to spend money on real flowers, just order silk bouquets etc. Most companies let you keep them afterwards

If they're going to have Millennial Money Marriage episodes the next steps should be Millennial Money Child Bearing episodes followed by Millennial Money Divorce episodes. Considering the statistics, you could have the same couples for each of these versions.

Spent zero on photographer yet $2k on engagement ring. Oh well. Glad that I'm not having same brain like them. I'm planning to get married overseas, hire decent photographer, get a cheap ring ans travel a lot. No wedding party maybe just a nice dinner with our families to celebrate.

What’s the question here? It’s normal for a couple to announce “they” are pregnant or expecting. Of course she is carrying the child but she didn’t get pregnant on her own.
