the life chances of anyone of any colour greatly increases with education, that is just obvious. and bu education i mean education in all forms, i don't mean just school itself, education from parents and life in general too.
Actually, she was the one who proposed it because she really wanted the apartment and the landlord wanted to give it to someone else. She bargained that to get it, and she could afford it. Don’t worry for her, she’s a very smart woman (her situation proves it).
Exactly. I'm an American who has lived in London for over 6 years and I paid the standard 6 weeks deposit and 1 month upfront. Some places even take 1 month deposit and 1 month rent upfront
They had to make sure “she could pay the rent”, code for, we get to pick and choose how we treat people. There’s no way to do a side by side comparison of a white persons buying process and a black persons buying process.

As a Londoner; there’s a number of things that stick out here. She’s chosen to live in Hampstead which admittedly is a very expensive area, but she’s also chosen to live on her own and not share to keep costs down. My friends share a two bed flat in Hampstead for £1600 a month. I have never heard of anyone paying a full years rent up front; maybe some high end rentals would ask you to do this. Normal people do not have £40k to spend upfront on rent, that’s a house deposit for most Londoners. There are plenty of 1 bed flats in London in more reasonable areas for £800-£1000 pcm, Hampstead is for millionaires! I’ve glassdoored her salary for her role and it’s between £85-£120k, which does not equate to $227k USD. I think her stock options must be factored hugely in to this. Irrespective, she’s earning more than 99% of people in London. This is more than most doctors and only investment bankers and those in finance or ceos would earn more.
Yup if you look at her taxes shes earning approx £100k inc. Bonus. And if she cashes out of those Amazon shares which have gained so much value probably have to pay capital gains?
She’s foreign so difficult to determine credit rating and referencing and probably has no guarantor so most agency ask for money upfront... It’s normal
Yeah i was like. Wtf im going to become a "Senior Ops Manager". In reality i wonder if she could live her life from her salary or she is already at a point that compounding her investments. Also. Her taxes breakdown seems way off. Which makes me think she must be earning about £90-£100k in the UK and majority of other revenue on the US, not very much being taxed.
@H. A. yeah i think they do that when you are international. It might just be because we are students but we have to pay 6 months rent upfront (live in earls court), they seem to only want to do this for international students though
So glad someone else said it! Could of got somewhere sooo much bigger or the same size place for half of what she’s paying.. definitely ripped off, but could be because she’s American 🤷🏼♀️ but props to her! She killing it!

Advice from someone who is much more successful: do your stuff quietly; as you rise in socio-economic status don't feel you have to change your vehicle/home everytime you get a promotion; when you set your goals DO NOT tell anyone of your friends & especially your work colleagues. Also lets just say you're gonna do an MBA or some higher edu course, DO NOT tell anyone until you've completed and that certificate has already been received and submitted to your HR dept (do not even tell your direct managers) The only time they should know is when a vacancy within the firm arises & you apply. Envy & politics will crush you before you know it and you'll end up like the "other crabs in a barrel". These are my rules as a senior in one of the world largest financial institution. Try avoid getting burnt to learn if you've already been given gd advice my friend.
If anything being black is an advantage at Amazon, it's well known they have affirmative action in place combined with their forced company politics it's likely she was also hired to boost diversity stats. This young woman is a ROCKSTAR!! You're killing it. BUT in the future if you don't have to pay 12 months in rent up front that would be super ideal. You basically gave your landlord an interest free loan. Taking that $44k and investing it could have made you several thousand dollars. But again, well done, you're crushing life! Most people who immigrate to the UK require a guarantor to cover any rental payments on behalf of the rentee. I'm assuming this is to minimise potential fraud. She paid in advance but note she also mentioned receiving a relocation allowance, so she's most likely secure in that area.
When you are foreign it is hard to avoid price discrimination. I am wondering if she could have avoided this with a bit more hunting or if she had a local help her out. Generally though, I think landlords try find ways to extract even more money from none locals.

As a Londoner, it’s really interesting hearing her perspective and experience as an American in London. It looks like she’s living in Hampstead which is zone 2/3 with respect to the London Underground and is a pretty pricey area of London. There are cheaper pockets around the capital but you end up having to compromise on transport/amenities or aesthetic and Hampstead is gorgeous. I’m not surprised at London coming across as more expensive than Baltimore! It’s definitely an overpriced market here. Supply and demand I guess!
Ethan Apparently, if it's a highly sort - after area, this is legal. I'm a Brit and I was flawed by the amount that she had to pay just to settle into her property.
Ethan I certainly have. Quite a few (not all) of my international friends who work over here in London have had to put up between 6-18 months rent upfront because they don’t have a job or study history in the U.K. and so are seen as a greater risk. They are willing to put money up to secure accommodation, so I wasn’t surprised at that in this video & a quick google search will show it’s fairly common practice (albeit ott, in my opinion). Again, supply & demand.
Ethan hi, yes it does happen... the reason would be a combination of poor or non-existent UK/European credit rating and the competitiveness of the property. Offering a lump sum is a good way to show you’re serious and overcome the credit rating issue.
Although 16 months is a lot! I’ve seen 6 months... possibly she failed the credit rating again due to using US credit cards! I’m no credit rating expert, someone else can no doubt help.
She does clarify on her own channel that the landlord never asked for this much upfront this was her own offer so she could out bid the UK residents who had already been offered the place. With about 700k people who lost their jobs and thousands more still on furlough I really wish they did someone with the average salary in London as a majority of actual Londoners do not make this especially that London is a very expensive place to live and many live in shared houses. I think Metro's series 'what I rent' or 'how I save' series is very realistic of the UK experience at her age.
@@Harry._.Thompson Yes. I love watching successful millennials. It would be terrible to watch someone earning 20k/year (unless they have a really awesome and unique job).
As a longer that deals with property I can tell you they truly shafted you. They saw your foreign along with your salary and the greedy landlord requested a year upfront. Then an additional 4 months fml 🤦🏻♂️
I moved from Canada to London as well and it would have definitely been related to where she works. Grabbing the tube if she lives very Central is more cost-efficient and convenient than living too far out. Plus safety can play a role. I was living in Surrey and taking the train to central then grabbing the tube for work (which cost me £30 a day & 1.5hrs each way). Then I moved to Kensington & Chelsea where my rent was MUCH higher but I was safe and getting to work took less than 15 minutes. So cost/benefit!
Buying a 1 or 2 bed flat would have been a greater financial investment. Applying for a mortgage herself would have required a £150-250k deposit to achieve monthly payments of £2,000. She’s clearly someone who will be on workplaces abroad throughout her career and can’t buy a home everywhere. Furthermore she has a relocation/housing budget that covers market rent wherever she works,
Crazy salary. Love US salaries. Friend in NY is on $350k as doctor. In UK is less than £80k. I have a masters from Russell Group university and still make less than £80k in London after 8 years of experience in finance.

I think you are misinformed about the laws or misunderstood her situation. The laws in London for security deposits limit this to 5 weeks rent. This is the money held by the TDS. In her case, she paid rent upfront as part of her offer to the landlord (person A May offer 2800 paid monthly, person B offers 2700 paid annually, landlord decides). If you have the funds, this is a great way to get a discount for rent. I do think though she paid a lot for someone living alone (maybe she doesn't as she says we a few times), and would guess her rent will come down after pandemic/brexit.
Anthony Gorgi that’s now how she said it though. She said to secure her flat (which we have translated into deposit or security) she HAD to pay 12 months in advance. Then during her first month she paid HAD another 4 months rent. She didn’t say she offered, she didn’t say she got a discount. She paid 16months rent before she’d even lived there for 30 days. I may have misunderstood her but that’s exactly how it came across. She should’ve only paid 5 weeks rent for a deposit and possibly the first months rent early. Her salary, visa and contract should have been enough proof that she could afford to pay for it.
Chux good point. Yeah, listening to it again, it doesn't make sense "paid 12 months, lived there for a month then paid another 4 months". That doesn't make sense. I have paid up front quarterly (to get a discount) even though my job and salary justify the monthly, and generally found you can secure the apartment by paying under list price (especially paying quarterly up front).
Nope, she voluntarily offered 12 months rent in order to secure the property with the landlord, over another propective tenant. Purely voluntary - not very common at all, but definitely understable. She has made a video about it here on YT
I’m a bit skeptical…she’s a SR ops manager at AMZN (L5). Amazon‘s pay sale is highly equity based, that said, the pay ceiling is around 172k. Perhaps she’s vesting in excess of 50k/year in equity, but on the retail side I find that hard to believe..if she were a SDE in AWS..then, maybe. Not ops, though.
@@thebabymomo2709 There are obvious factors that would have influenced their behaviour to do this to her in order to ensure that they collect hefty sums upfront. I can identify four factors.
I've lived in London for five years and have never heard anyone paying so much for 1 bed and actually paying more than the listing price. In all my flats, I have always offered less than the listing price and that is the norm. You can get a super nice central 1 bed for less than 2k easily. Just saying this so people won't get the wrong impression of this beautiful city.
Not 2K USD. There are probably no 1 bedrooms in Northwest London (Hampstead Heath, Marylebone, etc) for 1570 GBP. (Unless maybe council housing). She's paying roughly 2170 GBP, and it doesn't showing like it's a one bedroom as one room converts. I also don't think she lives alone as her council tax is high and not getting the 25% single discount.
@@anthonygorgi7614 If you go to Rightmove, it's full of 1 beds under £1500 in those areas so not sure where you're getting this from. I think she got ripped off and just like other comments have mentioned, they took advantage of her being a foreigner.

I feel she was taken advantage of big time! Ridiculous that she was asked to pay 12 months upfront and then a further 4 months. This is not the norm.
Yeah, she would have gotten a better deal staying at an Airbnb or even a hotel.

Good luck with that, she probably pays close to 43%+ taxes ;)

Yeah...why advertise the $227k when that’s not true. Very misleading
i agree? why is she spending so much on rent but wanting to buy a house by 33? things don't add up on this
She’s foreign so difficult to determine credit rating and referencing and probably has no guarantor so most agency ask for money upfront...
That estate agent ripped her off... those fees are excessive and crazy. I live in West London and no way would I pay those fees.
Exactly!
I pay £2k in Earls Court. Her rent seems about right. Down payments are wacky though- definitely visa related.
@H. A. yeah i think they do that when you are international. It might just be because we are students but we have to pay 6 months rent upfront (live in earls court), they seem to only want to do this for international students though
I rented a 3 bedroom flat in Mayfair for the amount she's paying lol, I'm international too btw
So glad someone else said it! Could of got somewhere sooo much bigger or the same size place for half of what she’s paying.. definitely ripped off, but could be because she’s American 🤷🏼♀️ but props to her! She killing it!
She's the exception. Most Americans don't have 40k, they can just hand over to a landlord. Buying a home would seem to be a better investment.
True. But she made herself the exception thru hard work. Agree that buying a home would be better tho
She stated that money was included in her relocation package from her job. But you are right in general terms
In new york , in manhattan specifically , paying 12 months up front pretty typical
@@roaminroninx3446 Where and when? I have never heard of such a thing, EVER. At most you have to pay 1st month, last month (which I don't understand), and a security deposit equal to 1 month.

She got scammed, I rent in central London in a similar price range from the last five years. I have never heard about biding wars and paying a year's rent in advance.
This whole video is fake.
If you don’t have a U.K. guarantor then they ask 6 months or 1 year upfront. So lots of foreigners do have to pay upfront.
Foreigners in New York have to pay upfront too. If they leave suddenly landlords are left with no legal avenue to pursue.

Financial success as a black woman is such a good look and so great to see showcased to a large audience. Anyone can take some hope and energy from this, too. I’m brown and male, but Iman’s story is for sure gonna help push me through law school and past my own obstacles (different though they may be)
Advice from someone who is much more successful: do your stuff quietly; as you rise in socio-economic status don't feel you have to change your vehicle/home everytime you get a promotion; when you set your goals DO NOT tell anyone of your friends & especially your work colleagues.
Sounds harsh but it's how these places work now, to assume she was at a disadvantage becuase of her skin color is not only untrue but also pretty racist becuase you're generalizing people by skin color.

She could maybe save £500 a month by going a stop closer to Central london to Belsize Park she could save atleast £350 and have a better apartment.

She's killing the game!
Why is she paying so much rent? She could definitely have got a better deal or found a cheaper place.

How because one black person has a good job do U think
So lowly of your race?
I’m a 26 year old living in Indiana without a job, I’d be down to one of these videos lol
Oof. Good luck man apply like crazy with online job finders like indeed. I’m 21 and lucky to have never been unemployed. I always find a new job before quitting.
You are not alone brother
Oh yikes, sorry about that
I hope she sees this ; she is gorgeous and articulate and soooo versatile. God Bless her 🎉💞🫶🏾
I don't care what Graham says about her, she is killing it
I love love love this! I lived in South Korea for a couple months and it was interesting to see a change in the work culture there and how some things are more or less expensive depending on what you buy.
Less Confused Personally I didn’t experience that much anti-blackness as oppose to gender discrimination. I was very surprised. Certain male employees treated me differently since I was the only female working there. I think the only anti-blackness I experienced was curiosity especially with my hair
It's nice to see a fellow brother of DSP, especially one from your chapter! It was definitely a pleasant surprise to see this video on my recommendations
there are laws limiting deposits in the UK. she got cheated.
Chux exactly, it came across that she wouldn’t be able to rent unless she paid everything upfront
Love seeing black women doing the damn thing. We are looked down on compare to other races/nationality but when we focus on what we want we get it.
I live in London and she got scammed so bad paying that much up front #sad
No she didn't its a 1 bed in Hampstead, thats the norm.
Alledgedly, that is quite the norm when doing executive lettings in London but seemingly not right according to the rules stated on gov.uk
Trecia G told you they got her good.
@@thebabymomo2709 There are obvious factors that would have influenced their behaviour to do this to her in order to ensure that they collect hefty sums upfront. I can identify four factors.
@@tc4906 is it scammed, scammed, scammed, and hmmm scammed?
A BLACK woman making over $200k. LOVE to see it!!! 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾

I love her hair 😍😍😍
She's a superstar. Love her and her ambition!
Plz more of this content and people like her!! She’s so inspiring!
A £34000 downpayment for rent is robbery. And a year in advance?!! Unheard of. She should have bought a place instead. But she's doing so well. Kudos!
I wanna be like her when I grow up... even though I'm already grown
As a Londoner born and bred. I’m embarrassed how the landlord took advantage of her.
Welcome to racist UK. It’s all very subtle, but that’s how it’s done over here.
