Watching the video made this an easy job. I used a 1/4" drill bit and had no problem removing the rivets. I bought a pair of 1/4"-20 x 3/4" socket cap screws and 1/4"-20 lock nuts from Home Depot to mount the new handle. Make sure you get the little hooks on the bottom of the handle in behind the door handle before you tighten the mounting screws.
Thank you! I would never have attempted this without your video. It went reasonably well until I tried to pop rivet the handle back on and discovered they were too small, so I spent 1/2 an hour scrounging up a couple of bolts and lock nuts, after that it went together. And it worked, YEA!
Buying parts is one thing I do with 1A Auto because of price and fast delivery....but the real reason is because you save me thousands of dollars of repair on my cars and trucks via the videos that are clear and well organized....things I would have never considered doing on my own you make simple to do after watching your videos. Thank you so much very these. My VW 2000 Passat 4motion has > 300K miles and still runs like a sewing machine! Too bad for the new car dealers!
outstanding video on how to replace this handle had a friend that is a car dealer and tried to do it himself he worked on it for about 6hrs and still wasn't able to fix it, i was pretty sure i knew how to do but watched your video just in case i had it out and new one back in, in about 20mins door panels and all thanks for the help
Just replaced one of the back door handles, which was a little more of a pain because the assembly is harder to get to. But the video was a great help, thanks!
UPDATE… with the back door that would not open from the inside or outside, took out the two bolts that hold the seat to the floor, the seat lifts up hinged and out of the way. With front seat moved all the way forward plenty of room to work. Had the other door panel off so I knew where the clips were, starting at the bottom of the door under the speaker got that clip out , it went great from there THANKS and WOW received handles in less than 48 hours after ordering with your free shipping.
I really appreciated the video, much easier to watch something than try to use just the Chilton manuals. It's the little details that make all the difference. Anyway, I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. When it came to drilling out the rivets, I found that using a 1/4 inch drill instead of a 5/16 worked much better. I didn't need to use a chisel at all. Thought I would add my experience to the subject. Also, it is imperative that the clip on the rod be replaced in the exact same spot or you will run into a door handle that still won't open the door. No big deal, but a waste of time to have to remove and install the door panel a second time. Thanks again.
I did mine today and AFTER punching the center of the rivets, I used a 1/4" drill bit and followed with the 5/16" and it worked really well. Your advice on putting the clip onto the rod in the same spot also helped me avoid an issue I'm sure, thanks. I tested the lock/handle assembly and the window down/up BEFORE I put the panel back on. I am not a mechanic, and this was a first for me, so I was pleased when everything worked.

Thank You for the video, it was helpful. It would have been nice had you shown some of those pesky details. I followed along with you step by step. But when I tested the handle it would not open. Not sure if someone tried to break into this truck or what. The owner did say that they had to pull really hard on the handle to open the door. Just below the yellow clip that you show in the video there is a connection, a tab. Took me a while to figure out it was bent down. As if someone had pulled really hard on the handle and bent it. Once I straightened it out the door opened like new. Not sure why but I was thinking your parts made out of metal. But then again Nothing screams Quality like a thin peace of plastic with some springs and for only $18, and you have to get your own nuts and bolts. You know how it is the handle breaks on a Sunday night and you got to go to work on Monday. So I get my KY jelly and headed down to the dealership, I knew what was coming. The guy said $48 bucks and change. I was Not looking forward to going there. But then he says he has to order it. I was some what relieved and disappointed I knew i could get it cheaper on line. But I did not want to have to wait. So for half the price even though I had to wait a week not a bad deal.
Thanks for the video. I had to watch carefully to see if the window had to be up or down. I know common sense right. Wish i would have ordered through your company, because I had to go find bolts and locking nuts.
I just ordered 4 exterior handles, I have one door in the back (drivers side) that will not open at all, outside handle is broke, inside has nothing it apears to be hooked to. What should I do, take out my seats to get panel off, do you have a video on taking out my seats... smiles, I love your videos... (2000 Ford Explorer)
Thanks that helped a lot , considering the door handle cost $197 I used 1/4" x 3/4 ' long bolt ,with a Lock nut , and lock washer , and added thread lock also.
Yes it does I have a 1996 and it worked the only difference was the door handle, make sure you buy a 1996 door handle instead of a 1997 which I did do on accident.
If you use a 1/4" drill bit, then turn it at an angle it stops the rivet from spinning. Then I'm using 1/4" Philips head screws and nuts but thanks this helped a lot.
@Tricia67060 Currently we do not have a video that shows you how to remove the seats. They should be bolted into place.Once the door panel is off, you should be able to reach inside of the door and pull one of the rods to unlock the door. Hope this helps you out.
I also spent all day removing and struggling to get handle out. I studied the manual to no avail and gave up to start again today. I found this video and voila, removing the window track so I could see the clip and in 20 minutes had it reassembled....and it wouldnt work. I then disassembled again and in 10 minutes found that when I closed the clip it wasnt positioned low on the arm far enough to engage the mechanism enough to open door. Quick respositioning and tada, I have a door that has an operational handle. Time for a break, I have three more to do, and then checking to see if you have video on how to fix a 2000 Ford Explorer Hatch that doesnt open. ......?
@Cristofre After reading some of the post I went and bought the nuts and bolts prior to getting my handles from "1aauto", they came with the nuts and bolts :-) really nice flat head black bolts painted black.
Thanks for your video help me replace door handle. But I can’t open the door so I adjusted the rod in three different places on that clip and it doesn’t make a difference where I clip it. It still doesn’t work now what
Someone tried breaking into our Mountaineer with a screwdriver and broke off the handle. We replaced the handle per your instructions, though the door will still not open with the outside handle. When I move the clip up & down attached to the latch module, it appears to have spring tension, though it will not open the door. Do you have any suggestions? BTW - Thanks For The Great Video!!!
First, thanks for the vid. It helped a lot. Now, can you help me with this problem? My speedometer on the 97 explorer, auto tranny, will rise to 50 mph as soon as I start moving, & will stay there no matter what speed I'm driving. It will then, slowly, go back to zero when I stop. I already replaced the speed sensor on the transfer/tranny case. That wasn't the problem. Is it a speedo gauge problem? ABS sensor? I'm baffled. One other thing: the speedo works just fine when the motor has sat overnight, & everything is cold. (I live in MT). This doesn't last very long though. Thank you.
How long should this take? I took my mountaineer to freestone and after 3 hours they still did not have it fixed cue to going to work i have go take it back
I got my part in the mail, but was a little disappointed that it didn't come with the bolts and nuts as it appeared in the Video. Or at least they could of commented on the size in the video.Thank Anyways.
I did everything (seemingly) correctly but it seems like the door opening will not actuate? I cycled the door latch with a screw driver multiple times to simulate the door being shut but it won't open from the outside. But it still will from the inside. I think the clip needs to be in just the right place but it seems really difficult. Any tips?

Yes it does I have a 1996 and it worked the only difference was the door handle, make sure you buy a 1996 door handle instead of a 1997 which I did do on accident.
If you use a 1/4" drill bit, then turn it at an angle it stops the rivet from spinning. Then I'm using 1/4" Philips head screws and nuts but thanks this helped a lot.
+bigemakinit Thank you for your feedback!
@Tricia67060 Currently we do not have a video that shows you how to remove the seats. They should be bolted into place.Once the door panel is off, you should be able to reach inside of the door and pull one of the rods to unlock the door. Hope this helps you out.
VERY GOOD VIDEO TKS

I also spent all day removing and struggling to get handle out. I studied the manual to no avail and gave up to start again today. I found this video and voila, removing the window track so I could see the clip and in 20 minutes had it reassembled....and it wouldnt work. I then disassembled again and in 10 minutes found that when I closed the clip it wasnt positioned low on the arm far enough to engage the mechanism enough to open door. Quick respositioning and tada, I have a door that has an operational handle. Time for a break, I have three more to do, and then checking to see if you have video on how to fix a 2000 Ford Explorer Hatch that doesnt open. ......?
GOOD JOB
+Danny S Hodges Thanks. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
If you look at the clip it may just attach to the rod, some times they just clip on.
@Cristofre After reading some of the post I went and bought the nuts and bolts prior to getting my handles from "1aauto", they came with the nuts and bolts :-) really nice flat head black bolts painted black.
You may be able to pop in off of the rod with a flat head screw driver.
Thank you.
Wanted to give a huge thank you for a great video. Any advice on how to replace a handle if the door won't open?
How long should this take? I took my mountaineer to freestone and after 3 hours they still did not have it fixed cue to going to work i have go take it back
Should have taken it to Firestone. I couldn’t help it 😂
This is great - but do you have any tips for the rear door handle - it is different. The clip holding the rod is basically inaccessible. Any tips?
Does the door handles come with the studs and nuts ordering them through you all?
Unfortunately the issue is probably the regulator itself is bent. The only way to fix the problem would be to replace it with a new one.
what size nut and bolt are used? I bought new door handles for my 1996 explorer and they didn't come with hardware
great work //thanks
I got my part in the mail, but was a little disappointed that it didn't come with the bolts and nuts as it appeared in the Video. Or at least they could of commented on the size in the video.Thank Anyways.
I have a 1996, will this method still work? I've opened up the door before and everything looks pretty similar from what I remember.
I did everything (seemingly) correctly but it seems like the door opening will not actuate? I cycled the door latch with a screw driver multiple times to simulate the door being shut but it won't open from the outside. But it still will from the inside. I think the clip needs to be in just the right place but it seems really difficult. Any tips?
