"The Japan Team crumbles before height and strength" -Asians are known to be short and small compared to other parts of the world -So when they say Japan crumbles it means Japan loses against other teams that have both height and power which is ironically what Coach Dr Wily's motto is for Shiratorizawa
The All Japan Youth Camp is only meant for first and second years, so players like Ushiwaka and Bokuto aren’t in there because they’re both third years. Though it’s stated that Ushiwaka was selected before in his earlier years and it makes sense if Bokuto was selected as well since he’s a Top 5 ace and always went to nationals.
"Knowing Haikyuu, they did research on what the Youth Training Center looks like" - Haikyuu's creator, Furudate-sensei, actually visited the place for research! UPD: checked out the comments I'd translated, and right before touring the training center they actually interviewed youth team's coach! -> "Had a chance to talk to coach Nanbu from the youth national team! If me from the past heard about it, would’ve fainted for sure."
About the -kun at the end of names: Japanese has an honorific system. You add one to the end of peoples’ names depending on their relationship with you -san: basic honorific. Indicates formality and respect -kun: for friends, family members and in a work setting, those lower in position (usually for males) -Chan: for people you are very close with, such as your couple or a very close friend, or for small children. -sama: an extreme degree of formality. Used to refer to deities or kings.
@@vanakinb1991 also formal, usually used by people that are high in rank to refer to people on the same level as them. Was historically used by samurai to refer to other samurai.
A final system is, when you remove the honorifics completely. Some close/ best friends and lovers will in private remove any honorifics and refer to one another informally with their first names alone. Is rare though and others doing that is suuper rude.
Couple of things you missed coach. 1st: Doctor Wiley said Hinata is allowed to stay as long as he's fine with just being a ball boy. (so he's technically not allowed to participate). 2nd: When Kageyama walks into the Olympic training camp, they mention how the feed on the big screen TV is set up with a 6 second delay so that players can analyze their plays after doing them. 3rd: The Yellow jacket guy with the mask is from the #1 seeded school at nationals (They beat Fukurodani in the OVA). And he's one of the top 3 spikers in Japan HS volleyball along with Ushiwaka.
This season has the best character development for every character but especially for Hinata and Kageyama. I can't wait to see coach Donny's reaction to Hinata's journey.
Saeko, Tanaka's older sister, is working to support the Karasuno volleyball team at the ramen shop where she works. Part of the sales will be donated to Karasuno.
the shiratorizawa coach didnt let hinata join the training, he made him a ball boy, very important detail im so excited to see what coach's first impression of atsumu is!!
yup! Spoiler for coach: I wonder if his team line up for the setter position will change once he'll get to know Atsumu or he still sticks with Kageyama. Really excited!
Many Japanese (even grown adults!) have varying amounts of difficulty in reading kanji (the Chinese characters that are also used in Japanese writing). Kanji is a touch more challenging than the original Han Zi because each character has different meanings and ways of being pronounced so while attempting to ask for directions, Kageyama might wind up sounding completely incomprehensible. The difference is really stark, like not just intonation but a completely different pronunciation entirely. It's common for young children and early learners of the language to receive help in the form of furigana which are like helping phonetic characters written on top of the kanji to show them how to properly pronounce the word. There's a video somewhere on youtube where Oikawa's voice actor being clowned by another Haikyuu voice actor (his character hasn't debuted in this episode!) while trying to read a fan letter with lots of (basic!) kanji. he gets all the pronunciations wrong hahahaha
Although it looks like they're referring to the pandemic with Sakusa and his mask, that's not how it is. In fact, Sakusa first official look in the manga was back in 2016 and he has always had his mask on :)
one person is wearing a mask so no it doesn't. It's also common in japan to wear masks and sakusa is a germaphobe so he wears it like 90% of the time. the only times he doesn't have it on are for eating and during the game
@@tomuchcamoflauge Nah, he's not a germaphobe. In the guidebook, the author stated he's not a germaphobe, just very blunt against what he dislikes, which is germs and crowds.
@@Kaimax61 I heard the reason he wears the mask is not just because he dislikes germs, but because he does not want under any circumstance to get sick before a match and have his power diminished or be put out of commission.
I think it would've been even funnier if that happened to Asahi because everyone will shrink past a certain age and since there's always the rumor that Asahi is way older than the other and that it's like his 5th year in high school that kinda works as a reinforcement of those rumors hahahaha
A little info: Season 3 (2016) and Season 4 (2020) are actually 3-4 years apart. Meaning, the anime went on a 4 years hiatus. The reason is that the anime was close on catching up from the manga, the original source of Haikyuu. When Season 3 last episode which is episode 10 was aired, the manga was just on the first part of what Season 4 will cover so there's no content to animate so they decided to let the manga release more chapters so that they could have more content to animate in the future. They released season 4 when the manga was working on its last final arc. Also, It's a 4 years hiatus so some directors and animators that handled haikyuu before have gone and are busy with some new projects that's why you'll see many big changes from the animation. Changes are also evident from the voices of these characters but not that much.. just minor ones. 4 year gap was crazy for me and I remember myself at 2017 really losing hope for Season 4 but here it is after 4 years lol. It's nice that you won't have to go through that kind of pain haha. I hope you'd enjoy Season 4, coach! So many amazing scenes and moments and so much character developments! Hope you enjoy watching again! I look forward to your remaining reactions!
Also I hate how people rack on S4 animation even tho it was being made throughout 2020 with covid 19 being a huge deal and the whole world learning how to deal with it
Is there a chance that any of the older animators will come back? although I'm already used to the new style and I've read the manga so I don't mind either way.
I really love this season's outro. It focus on the ones supporting Karasuno who in general aren't appreciated enough I think. Many forget how much of an impact they have on Karasuno. So I really love how this ending is focussing on characters like Yachi, Takeda-sensei, Saeko, Kyoko, etc.!
Canadian teacher living in Japan here! Honorifics in Japan : teachers usually add -kun after the boys' last name and -chan after the girls' last name. They can also add -san to either boys or girls last name. It is a mark of respect in Japan, that everyone follows pretty strictly. You would usually add -san to everyone's last name when talking to or about them (or -sensei for teachers and doctors, like they do for Takeda), but for young boys and girls, kun and chan are pretty common. To not use an honorific is called yobisute and is an honorific in itself and means proximity. Even more so if you use the first name. Doing so without being a close friend is considered rude. If you listen carefully, Hinata refers to the older players with the -san honorific, but with the other 1st years he uses the -kun honorific.
Deleted my comment explaining this because this one seemed more succinct and well thought-out. Another wrinkle in the whole character dynamic is that Takeda is referred to as "Take-chan" by the kids which denotes an even closer familiarity between them.
Also : Kanji is one of the three "alphabets" used by Japanese people, and uses Chinese symbols. It contains thousands of symbols, so even Senior Hogh School students don't know the readings for all of them. Furigana is when you include the pronunciation of a kanji above it. Since Kageyama is going to a place he doesn't know, he will most likely not know his way if the Kanjis for the train station or roads are complex.
@ash's dumpsite You have to remember that a lot of anime characters do not talk like actual Japanese people. This is most likely an "artistic choice" to convey the fact that, despite his shy appearance, he knows he is an equal to Ushijima. Then agqin, I am far from being an expert of japanese culture and might be saying complete nonsense in that specific matter. Interpersonal relations are already complex in Japan, adding the anime layer can make it an unsolvable puzzle to me XD
Yea that is quite embarrassing but I totally respect that since I have had to do an extremely similar thing as he did to get to where I am now(Software Developer). I didn't even have a computer to learn to be a software developer 5 years ago and there was a situation where I had to choose between doing that embarrassing thing and getting money to learn to be a developer or just give it up totally. I choose to do it which got me here. I will probably never tell anyone what I did.
@@hourbit7385 Yeah, but doesn't make them the kings. Most people like Burnout Syndromes stuff more and they have like 1 more song than SPYAIR in the anime.
If you're curious about the furigana thing: The Japanese writing system is made up of a 46 character alphabet (hiragana) and also an identical alphabet (katakana) for borrowed foreign words. These are the first 2 systems that kids learn. Then there are 10,000s of symbolic characters (Kanji) that kids learn after, but starting very young. For people who can't read the Kanji, they will usually write the hiragana directly beside the Kanji. This is called furigana, which is a reading aid paired with Kanji making it easier to read. You will usually see this in books, manga and textbooks for kids. Ennoshita was just worried that Kageyama wouldn't be able to read the Kanji for the stations and streets in Tokyo, so he was wondering if Takeda sensei included furigana for the directions so that Kageyama could read it. It further illustrates Kageyama's lack of average reading ability since he's hardcore focused on Volleyball.
Correction: the Joyo Kanji (normally used) is only a bit over 2000, with ~1000 covered in grades 1-6. Yes, it's daunting, but nowhere near the 10,000s OP puts forth.
Seeing Coach Donny laughs so hard knowing Hinata sneaks in already makes my day 😊😊 But I have question to coach Donny: if you were Hinata's coach, what would be your FIRST REACTION to Hinata when you hear the news? Will you scold him like Takeda and Ukai Sensei? or encouraging him like Nishinoya and Tanaka? Let's ignore the fact that this time Hinata is still a bit lucky that he is allowed to stay at the end
Hinata's ball boy training is my favorite part of this season, especially for how well it subverts expectations and sets up later plot points in the season so effortlessly. I really think you'll enjoy the deeper parts of the writing this season but I love your appreciate for this season's animation as well. People really dig on it because when its low quality its fairly noticeable but honestly its got the best animated scenes out of the whole series. Plus the art for the faces is a lot more expressive and fun imo. (17:30 for a perfect example)
The coach in grey (that vouch for Hinata) is the coach from Jozenji (the hyper team that needed to be scolded by their female manager in season 2). He used to be a student at Shiratorizawa. It's actually super interesting how his wild and free team is so opposite of Shiratorizawa which is rigid in it's systems.
For those wondering what the joke is regarding Kageyama reading Takeda's instructions to get to his youth camp: Takeda-sensei wrote the instructions in proper Kanji. The team is joking that they hoped that he included furigana for Kayeyama. Furigana are more simple characters that sometime written in smaller font over complex kanji. They are reading and pronunciation aids incase people aren't familiar with that kanji. In most cases, it's for children. The joke here is that while Kageyama is a volleyball genius, he still reads like a child academically. True to form, Kageyama gets lost because he can't read the instructions and it takes him a while to reach the correct location.
I'll use this comment to remind you of some of 1st years in the Miyagi youth camp, as you might have forgot them due to the high amount of characters in the series. 1- Goshiki : The bowel cut guy who was the only 1st year in the starting roster in the Shiratorizawa match 2- Hyakuzawa: The inexperienced 2 meters guy who Karasuno beat in the Miyagi qualifiers. 3- Kindaichi: The turnip head MB guy from Aoba Johsai. he appeared in s1e1 and was in Kageyama's middle school team, and he was on bad terms with Kageyama when they graduated middle school). 4- Kunimi: An outside hitter for Aoba Johsai. He played in the first match which Karasuno lost but was subbed out for Mad dog in the second match. He also appeared in s1e1 and was in Kageyama's middle school team, and he wasn't on the best terms with Kageyama when they graduated middle school as well). 5- Koganegawa: The giant setter from Date Tech. He wasn't in the starting team during Date's last match against Karasuno in the Inter-High where Karasuno prevailed, but he appeared in the spring tournament that followed and was in the starting roster during the episode where Aoba Johsai played againt Date Tech. He is the tallest setter among the Miyagi prefecture teams that we have seen so far, but just like Lev, he is pretty inexperienced and raw. Those are the most relavent 1st years to remember for the Miyagi prefecture youth camp (besides Tsuki and Hinata), and it's important to note that except for Koganegawa, they have all lost to Karasuno and Hinata (you can see them getting competitive and fired up when they saw that Hinata infiltrated the camp).
The moment Hinata says "what about me?" I started feeling the second hand embarrassment all over again. Hinata baby, I love you, but you make me physically suffer during this episode lol.
Well, there's a reason why he will become a big shot compared to the rest of us, average blokes. My mom is exactly like Hinata, and when I was young I used to get embarrassed. But as I get older, I begin to see that my mom became successful thanks to her 'Hinata' traits, and I start to learn it ever since. Don't be afraid to want something and do your best to get it.
I’ve watched this episode a lot of times and only just noticed that Hinata mentions he defeated a boar, which is a callback to the end credit scene after the Path of the Ball OVA which….I just realised we forgot to ask you to watch! It’s not too crucial, just more Hinata and Kenma communication cuteness and a very Hinata moment.
“The Japan Team always crumbles before height and strength” is a quote that the Olympic Coach is refuting, because he says that that phrase is “outdated now”. There’s a stereotype that Japanese / East Asian volleyball teams are small/weak and therefore are prone to losing against taller/stronger people from other countries, but Hibarida (the coach) is declaring that, contrary to popular belief, that is not a true statement, because strength and height are not the only determiners for victory. Thanks for another great reaction, Coach! :)
so coach you might have misunderstood what shiratorizava's coach meant my ball boy... ball boys are the helpers that hand out water/drinks and pick up balls and do other odd jobs to help out the player's practices. so when he said "it's not like I care if we have another ball boy around" the coach meant that Hinata cant participate in practice but can only be there as a helper
The ending of this half of the season is something that I think is dedicated to all the people that are supporting the Karasuno team from the sidelines. Takeda-sensei, Shimizu-senpai, Yachi, Tanaka's sister helping with the donation for the team at her part-time job, Shimada and Takinoue doing their best as cheer squad members too. Without these people, the team would be absolutely nowhere right now. It's a really heart-felt way to show our gratitude to these characters.
Not Coach Donny taking one look at the back of Hoshiumi and going “ahh there is Bokuto” lol 😂 My dear Coach, Bokuto is a third year, the Japan Youth Camp usually invites first and second year. Ushi was previously invited (last year) because he was second year then and didn’t get an invite this year. Hope this helps. 🥰
"A random image or animation of Shimizu breathing." Lmao that somehow made me laugh omg Also Coach Donny's story at the end made me happy, I know the feeling of being noticed by awesome people and being able to talk to them haha, that is such an experience x)
Love this arc! Also the pandemic was never really incorporated into the story (the manga was written between 2014 and concluded in 2020). Kiyoomi just happens to be a germaphobe, so he wears masks all the time lol, its like part of his character design.
@@amugonajr9296 oh yeah, i guess your right hahaha i didn’t really counted that because it doesn’t really affect the story and is not prevalent throughout most of it
@@Singingtater24 omg i just googled it and your right!! i saw people everywhere say it as a fact so i just assumed agdhshsha (i mean, Omi does have some characteristics of a germaphobe so its believable)
The moment where Tsukishima is the most animated and shows the most emotion isn't back in Season 3 when he blocked Ushijima, it's whenever he found out Hinata snuck into the training camp.
This popped in my mind as well but I think coach meant specifically weightlifting and not powerlifting, considering how he thinks it's helpful for improving vertical jump.
When they say "ball boy", they mean that he is going to pick up the balls and clean the floor, a helper, that was the challenge if he could accept just doing that to be there.
Coach, don't forget that outside of volleyball, Kageyama is a single brain celled dodo head. He literally couldn't read the instructions that Takeda gave him 😂
The animation in part 1 of season 4 was fine, the quality drops in part 2 where some episodes were outsourced (that's my opinion, but it goes without saying that I absolutely love the story and character development)
no its true, part 1 is great and part 2 lost quality in the outsourced parts..and i feel bad for the great story and character development falling flat in the second part..even though i enjoyed it..it was shocking because haikyuu never had such a bad rep for animation and season 3 ended on such a high note animation wise
@@bLuGhOsT_ one episode in part 2 for sure was really bad quality throughout most of it, but even in some of the episodes after that there are some bad quality animations imo. That being said it was the middle of the pandemic, so I don't mind it too much and the story was still amazing!
I think that many people confuse "animation" with style and character design. There are a small couple of episodes later this season that get commissioned out for a third party studio to animate and those are definitely lower quality animation. But the actual animation in this season is just fine. It's the same high standard as seasons 1 and 2. The design style choice however is deliberately different, and that change is what many people do not like. There was a staffing change and shuffle. The director changed but many people who worked on the past seasons returned to do this season...just in different roles.
In Japanese, there are thousands of Kanji, so if someone is not academically inclined (like kageyama), they might not be able to read a lot of them. Furigana refers to the practice of writing out the phonetic pronounciation beside the kanji, so that even an elementary schooler can read it.
Coach: Ah, the falling snow and the falling cherry blossoms. These are probably the two most atmospheric effects in anime This is blatant falling leaves erasure and I will not stand for it 🍁🍂
One thing you can notice from S4 animation/art style is the muscle build up from the characters, specially Hinata and Kageyama. This is great because it shows how much they've grown phisically form training basically everyday and playing a lot of games. This and the fact that they're 15 year old teenagers and grow fast aswell.
25:00 fun detail: while scolding Hinata, Tsukki starts saying "you bok-", cuts off, and says "you baka" instead, cause he realised he was about to say "boke" like Kageyama usually does when quarreling with Hinata
Been waiting for this 💥💥 So yes, for me, the art this season is better, it's actually really beautiful and for example, the body proportions are better, and it actually shows the guys have muscles haha in previous seasons they all looked super skinny (specially buff boy Bokuto) The thing for me this season is the animation direction, the fluidity of the movements when they're playing isn't the same, it's fluid, but the transitions from one scene to another is a little slower, like when they're going for a spike, they last a bit more in the air, as if trying to build tension? But instead (for me) it's frustrating. After rewatching the season I realized the animation isn't that bad, taking out the outsourced episodes in the second half
And it makes sense, since one of the most important roles that changed between seasons were the Director and Chief Animation Director The character design and general illustration is fantastic, but those at the highest level, whose job it is to tie it all together, were a bit less experienced Despite that I think season 4 gets a harsher rap than it deserves. There's spotty moments but overall it is far from "bad", which makes me sad when I see people give it such a blanket "sucks"
Bro what? You had me until you started talking about the animation. The animation is basically the same. There's literally barely any difference. Nothing noticeable. The 2nd half of the season is where the illustrations started getting wonky and that ONE time the animation wasn't very good was when Nishinoya went for a underhand dig on a Jump Floater.
there is very little time when u see tsukki loose his composure, this is one of those times when hinata sneaks up to his training session, its super funny if i remember correctly, sakusa is a germaphobe, therefore everytime u see him he will be wearing a mask unless he is playing, thats when he takes it off i think, also he is the rank 1 spiker or something but definitely one of the top 3 spikers along with ushijima
My eyes welled up when coach discussed everything that Hinata needs to develop. The story-telling of all the character development for this season is just so beautiful.
Swagboi editing on that introduction sequence from start of video to Coach Donny's usual introduction. Incredibly subtle changes that make everything pop. Really loving the visual transformations of this channel that has so much heart to it. Feels like good people having great things happen to them and it's a blessing for all of us involved. Keep pushing
coach doesn't know it yet, but the ball boy arc is so important for hinata in his journey. I'm excited s4 begins for you and curious to see how much coach is gonna cry in the big moments, cuz i definitely did. But what me made fascinated about washijo when i saw the ball boy arc a couple times more was, that he isn't really against Hinata. I think he wanted to kinda test him and push him so much that he either snaps or, Hinata as he is, gets even more motivated and actually, "thinks" and makes progress. Proofs he is a really good volleyball coach. He probably would never admit it, but he probably likes Hinata more then he let's through.
I remember many people complaining that this arc was boring because of the lack of action.. but to me if you watch Haikyuu just for the action at this point of the story, then you don't really get a proper grasp yet about what Haikyuu is about... This arc is necessary & truly the turning point for Hinata & many other character's development.
23:15 Coach, in Japan they don't start learning right away the Kanji's because there're too many. They start and primary school with hiragana (the basic syllabary, which is a set of symbols that represent syllabs, kind of like in the latin alphabet) and from then they learn Kanji little by little. Before university they should know around 2500 Kanjis (in total I think there're around 7000). Sometimes when a Kanji has more than one way of reading they add at the top "furiganas" (which in fact are small hiraganas) so it's possible to know how to read that particular kanji. In this scene they worry about Kageyama because everyone knows he's not a good student, therefore they're not sure he'll be able to read the Kanjis written by the teacher; actually if you rewind at the moment of Kageyama arriving to Tokyo, you can see that he's struggling to read the paper xD.
You seem to missunderstand. Hinata is not meant to participate in the training-camp. He is not going to gather experience with other setters to see if he can thrive there. He is meant to be a BALL BOY, collecting balls, cleaning up and maintaining the court.
The hilarious part was that Hinata was willing to go all the way to Tokyo but didn't so he wouldn't get arrested. Another thing to note is that doing things improperly, being rude, inconveniencing others is extremely frowned upon. I'm no expert in Japanese culture though. Hinata crashes the camp so they have to stop everything to deal with it. He didn't think about how his actions affect others' organized program and time. The outcome ended up being okay, but he didn't tell the Karasuno coaches either. So he kinda ditched practice too, in a way. It was good for him to be motivated but they are scolding his inconsideration this time
It's very enlightening to hear the coach's thought processes in deciding what's best for the team vs individual player. Thanks for sharing all that technical stuff, coach!
wow Coach, what an awesome story about meeting the national team!! The way your lifelong work ethic and attitude matches those of the characters in Haikyuu just deepens my respect and appreciation for both you and this life changing show. Thanks Coach for sharing this story and for another great reaction!! Most people understandably get extreme secondhand embarrassment from Hinata’s stunt in this episode but I love that Coach Donny was immediately on board. Legends just get each other 🤝
This scene of the first episode of Season 4 where they measure running vertical jump is the same as the last scene from S3. The cool thing about this is that you can compare the different artstyle between the two staffs of Haikyu, the one from S1-3 and the new one from S4 onward. I think both of them are good but one thing I'm glad they didn't changed was the soundtrack staff. Yuki Hayashi is the GOAT when it comes to making hype music!
NO SPOILERS Just wanted to give some context to what was going on outside the show for this season. This season was done by the same animation studio and team but with a new Director. This season was also made 3 Years (January 2020) after season 3 (December 2016) which is why it's so different. The comic this show is based on was wrapping up and the comic and this season were planned to finish just in time for the Tokyo Olympics but the pandemic changed plans.
People have such varied reactions to Hinata crashing the youth camp. I was personally closer to Tsukishima, kind of dying of second-hand embarrassment, not even sure if I could watch the rest of the episode, especially the ball boy speech. Coach, on the other hand, laughs it off and chalks it up to finding a way to make it happen. I like that we have very different responses to that.
23:05 Kanji (Characters borrowed from the Chinese language) can be difficult to memorize and Kageyama... slacks off in his academics, so Ennoshita is asking if Takeda-sensei included Furigana (Basically, the phonetics of the Kanji that are used so kids who don't know the kanji can still read and understand from the knowledge they have through listening and speaking Japanese) so Kageyama can read. But Takeda-sensei didn't include Furigana assuming that Kageyama knew those few Kanji (which are generally supposed to be known by the high school level), and comically...or not so comically...Kageyama doesn't.
@@hopewelch9421 Yeah! If you see the manga in Japanese, you'll see Furigana (which are actually Hiragana characters, as you said) since shonen manga are targetted to teenagers and they might not have enough knowledge of Kanji to read it entirely. It's also a great way to learn Kanji outside of textbooks.
Okay cool! Thanks for the info! I’ve always wondered what they were called and I always wondered what furigana was😂 honestly it’s a miracle kageyama made it to the camp alive
23:06 Japanese has multiple writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Kanji consists of Chinese characters and is the hardest to read and write, as it has more specific characters and there's so many of them most people don't even know them all. Because of this there's Furigana, which are simpler, alternate characters written above or under the Kanji ones to help people understand it better. If you noticed, when Kageyama was reading the directions in the scene before, he was struggling to read some of it because it didn't have the Furigana.
In my experience Kanji is something that has to be memorized as it refers to specific things written in a more complex way that doesn't always have an obvious pattern. Furigana is usually in hiragana, which is kind of like a Japanese alphabet. Unlike Kanji, hiragana (and katakana) are sounds instead of words. The best way to compare it is by thinking of Kanji as words and hiragana as the letters. Kageyama doesn't recognize the Kanji but would know what it was saying if he saw the hiragana of the word. I'll use the word snow as an example so that this will hopefully make more sense. The word snow in Japanese is pronounced "yuki" and the Kanji is written as "雪", so while Kageyama may know how the word snow is said he doesn't recognize the Kanji since the pronunciation and written Kanji have no correlation. In order to understand what the Kanji meant, "ゆき" (ゆ=yu き=ki) would be written above the word so he would know how it's verbally said and be able to recognize it. I hope this makes some kind of sense, I started this comment not fully realizing how hard it would be to properly explain 😅
one thing that i think is really cool about kageyama rubbing it in to hinata, is it shows that kageyama really thinks of hinata as a rival that he needs to beat, when from the outside you would assume kageyama is such a better and more well-rounded player that wouldn't care or concern himself with beating someone like hinata. i think it shows a lot of respect between them.
Reminder Coach, Japan has always have a face mask culture even before the Pandemic. In the case of Kiyoomi Sakusa, he simply doesn't like germs and crowds, so he always wear a mask to prevent getting sick. (Author had to point out he's not a Germaphobe, just very blunt against things he dislikes.) and Kiyoomi's first appearance is in 2016 in the manga.
I'm holding on to your words coach, lemme see the signed volleyball!!!! That was such a wholesome story I forgot what I wanted to comment initially. Ps. the white spiky haired dude is not Bokuto.
Hi Coach Donny, I’m glad to see you’re enjoying this episode and the art style change isn’t glaring to you! Your interpretation (the 29:12 time stamp) of Coach Washijo telling Hinata that he has no worth in him without Kageyama isn’t exactly right. It’s not that he expects him to thrive in with other setters in the mock camp, but it’s Hinata as a whole that lacks the skills in general. I’d want to say think back to the very first Karasuno vs Nekoma match where the Nekoma coaches were discussing how Kageyama and Hinata are basically combining each other’s strengths when playing. They even made an analogy after realizing it’s not a matter of “addition” for their strengths, but more like they’re “multiplying” their strengths together! It’s that image where Kageyama is holding a rocket launcher with a picture of Hinata on it. Back to the very straight point Coach Washijo was making, once Kageyama isn’t there to multiply, or enhance, Hinata’s strength, then what’s left? In the eyes of Coach Washijo, it’s just a “short player” who is severely lacking in any worth. Hopefully you can see this comment to see how this season will show how Hinata develops on his own when playing volleyball!
I don't see how your explanation differs from Coach's. You're saying Hinata lacks the skills to work with setters that aren't Kageyama. Coach said that it's because Hinata needs to learn how to work with setters that aren't Kageyama. He wasn't explicit on what Hinata needs to improve on, but he's spot on interpreting what it meant.
I wasn't trying to say Hinata is unable to work with setters that aren't Kageyama, if it did sound like that, then my bad there! For the most part, I just thought Coach Donny interpreted that scene as "if he can work with another setter, then Hinata should be good". The following episode will definitely explore more on what Hinata needs to work on for sure.
@@jasonle2204 I understand that. I mean that I think Coach's interpretation was correct. The reason Hinata is unable to shine with other setters is because he lacks perceptiveness and technical skill, and Kageyama has been covering for all his weakness by adjusting his own game. For Hinata to be as good with anyone just as he is with Kageyama, he needs to round out his game beyond just running around a lot and jumping high.
People say they find the moment when Hinata appears cringey or awkward but for me it’s a show of his determination, also recklessness but especially drive to improve and determination
Just like Coach said : successful people don't think about 'if', but 'how'. Hinata doesn't care what he should do or what other people think about him. That's a very positive trait that often misunderstood.
This is about the part where they talk about the furigana for the kanji. in pervious episodes we know that Kageyama and Hinata are not good at studying. For Japanese kanji isn’t something everyone can read and since Kageyama isn’t good at studying he isn’t good in kanji either which means he might not be able to read the detailed direction that he was given. When they said if he included furigana for the kanji, furigana shows how to read the kanji so that anyone that knows the basics in Japanese such as hiragana and katakana can read the kanji. This makes it so that Kageyama can read the kanji but Takeda sensei didn’t include this which is why he had a hard time finding his way.
btw, remember that they only invited 15 and 16 years old at the youth training camp to prepare them for the selection of 19-under two years from now which those kids will be 17 and 18 years old after 2 years. so you will not see bokuto nor ushijima since they are already above 15 and 16
I love the comments from coach (knowing what happens in the 4th season). I’m so hype for this ride! If you know you know, pls don’t give any hints or anything that spoils this journey for coach!
I'm just gonna say this: this is my favorite Hinata Season. Like, season 1 was definitely Kageyama (with other minor characters like Yamaguchi), season 2 is about the whole team. Season 3 is about Tsukkishima, but Season 4 is about Hinata. The amount of growth is inspiring.
Watching Haikyuu S4E1 for the nth time now but the secondhand embarassment is still going strong on THAT scene 😂 Anyways, coach, regarding the Japan team coach's speech, the phrase "The Japan team crumbles before height and strength", I think, actually meant that the team would lose if faced with taller and stronger opponents. That's why it was followed by "That phrase was pretty outdated". I think that the speech was referring to how the current Japan team can now hold their own against stronger or taller opponents, and that is why he is also encouraging the boys to show the skills and talent that they have developed through continuous practice. I think that his speech best summarize the entirety of season 3 in which Shiratorizawa both had the height and strength on their side but Karasuno still won by showing all the skills and talent they developed through their trainings as best they could during the match. That's only my interpretation though.... 😅
About strength and conditioning, you'll meet a strong team that focuses on it in later part of nationals....probably in season 5. That team has one of the top 3 wing spikers in the nation 😉
Oh this reminded me of Yanagida (former captain), Yamauchi, Nishida and Sekita from Japan Natl Team Ryūjin Nippon selecting their starting 7 players for the Olympic team from the Haikyu!! manga characters hahaha. Coach Donny talking about height as a total advantage for MB position, even a requirement, in higher level teams brought me back to that collab interview. Now it makes much more sense why and how the players possibly came up with the lineup. [Partial spoilers ahead do not read coach! -- mainly bec of some characters you haven't been introduced to yet] . . . . . . . . . --the starting players they selected were Miya Atsumu (S), Ushijima Wakatoshi (OP), Bokuto Koutaro (OH), Hoshiumi Korai (OH), Hakuba Gao (MB), Hyakuzawa Yūdai (MB), Yaku Morisuke (L) *They also threw in Tanaka bec Nishida liked him hahaha, and then Hinata too.
YESSSS I LOVE HOW U MENTIONED THE OPENING. ITS DEFINITELY MY FAVOURITE OPENING SO FAR ITS VERY GREAT AND THE ANIMATION PLAYING ALONGSIDE THE OPENING IS SO GREAT.
"The Japan Team crumbles before height and strength"
-Asians are known to be short and small compared to other parts of the world
-So when they say Japan crumbles it means Japan loses against other teams that have both height and power which is ironically what Coach Dr Wily's motto is for Shiratorizawa
This needs to be upvoted..

About the -kun at the end of names:
Japanese has an honorific system. You add one to the end of peoples’ names depending on their relationship with you
-san: basic honorific. Indicates formality and respect
-kun: for friends, family members and in a work setting, those lower in position (usually for males)
-Chan: for people you are very close with, such as your couple or a very close friend, or for small children.
-sama: an extreme degree of formality. Used to refer to deities or kings.
Up
Whats dono?
@@vanakinb1991 also formal, usually used by people that are high in rank to refer to people on the same level as them. Was historically used by samurai to refer to other samurai.
@@vanakinb1991 you can see example when two person with the same rank, when king speak to another king. Usually they use -dono
Plus, its not bokuto shown at the All-Japan with white hair 😂 Its Hoshiumi

Huh, I didn't know that. Guess you learn something new everyday, or the saying goes.
going thru the same process again.. back then 4yrs felt nothing to me.. but now only a year of waiting has me feel hopeless already 😵
does anybpdy have any intel on what's happening with season 5?
You're so right!
And there is that episode that only highlights Kiyoko’s importance even more
Canadian teacher living in Japan here!
Up!!!
@@DrumBandQc yeah especially since they established during the exams arc in season 2 that Kageyama is actually bad at Kanji 🤣
@ash's dumpsite You have to remember that a lot of anime characters do not talk like actual Japanese people. This is most likely an "artistic choice" to convey the fact that, despite his shy appearance, he knows he is an equal to Ushijima.

If you're curious about the furigana thing:
The Japanese writing system is made up of a 46 character alphabet (hiragana) and also an identical alphabet (katakana) for borrowed foreign words.
Seeing Coach Donny laughs so hard knowing Hinata sneaks in already makes my day 😊😊
But I have question to coach Donny: if you were Hinata's coach, what would be your FIRST REACTION to Hinata when you hear the news?

Hinata's ball boy training is my favorite part of this season, especially for how well it subverts expectations and sets up later plot points in the season so effortlessly. I really think you'll enjoy the deeper parts of the writing this season but I love your appreciate for this season's animation as well. People really dig on it because when its low quality its fairly noticeable but honestly its got the best animated scenes out of the whole series. Plus the art for the faces is a lot more expressive and fun imo. (17:30 for a perfect example)
“He’s got some buddies that will back him u- oOhHh…”
I’m DYING😂😂
1- Goshiki : The bowel cut guy who was the only 1st year in the starting roster in the Shiratorizawa match
2- Hyakuzawa: The inexperienced 2 meters guy who Karasuno beat in the Miyagi qualifiers.
I can't believe Coach Donny even has a "sneaking into practices you shouldn't be at"-tutorial in this video xD

That's such a cool experience you talked about at the end. Can't imagine how exciting that must have been.
You'll definitely like this season the most in terms of Volleyball knowledge, and character development.
I always had to laugh at Suga and Daichi completely shutting down Tsukki's attempt at avoiding participating in the mock Youth Camp. 🤣🤣🤣
so coach you might have misunderstood what shiratorizava's coach meant my ball boy... ball boys are the helpers that hand out water/drinks and pick up balls and do other odd jobs to help out the player's practices. so when he said "it's not like I care if we have another ball boy around" the coach meant that Hinata cant participate in practice but can only be there as a helper

The moment where Tsukishima is the most animated and shows the most emotion isn't back in Season 3 when he blocked Ushijima, it's whenever he found out Hinata snuck into the training camp.
Coach: I wish they show some weight lifting
Taketora: Well....
I think it's literally one episode that was noticeably of garbage quality, all other episodes were still great
@@bLuGhOsT_ one episode in part 2 for sure was really bad quality throughout most of it, but even in some of the episodes after that there are some bad quality animations imo.

These are probably the two most atmospheric effects in anime
This is blatant falling leaves erasure and I will not stand for it 🍁🍂
One thing you can notice from S4 animation/art style is the muscle build up from the characters, specially Hinata and Kageyama. This is great because it shows how much they've grown phisically form training basically everyday and playing a lot of games. This and the fact that they're 15 year old teenagers and grow fast aswell.

I love how, even during the parts of the anime with no games, Haikyuu still adds in fresh humor and good character moments to keep us hooked
25:00 fun detail: while scolding Hinata, Tsukki starts saying "you bok-", cuts off, and says "you baka" instead, cause he realised he was about to say "boke" like Kageyama usually does when quarreling with Hinata
Been waiting for this 💥💥
So yes, for me, the art this season is better, it's actually really beautiful and for example, the body proportions are better, and it actually shows the guys have muscles haha in previous seasons they all looked super skinny (specially buff boy Bokuto)
The thing for me this season is the animation direction, the fluidity of the movements when they're playing isn't the same, it's fluid, but the transitions from one scene to another is a little slower, like when they're going for a spike, they last a bit more in the air, as if trying to build tension? But instead (for me) it's frustrating. After rewatching the season I realized the animation isn't that bad, taking out the outsourced episodes in the second half
Yes that's it, that's the what's different about this season ! Thank you for finding the right words! Its not bad per say, but mostly different
And it makes sense, since one of the most important roles that changed between seasons were the Director and Chief Animation Director
The character design and general illustration is fantastic, but those at the highest level, whose job it is to tie it all together, were a bit less experienced
Despite that I think season 4 gets a harsher rap than it deserves. There's spotty moments but overall it is far from "bad", which makes me sad when I see people give it such a blanket "sucks"
Finally someone who agrees with me!
Yes exactly animation really isn’t that bad
Bro what? You had me until you started talking about the animation. The animation is basically the same. There's literally barely any difference. Nothing noticeable. The 2nd half of the season is where the illustrations started getting wonky and that ONE time the animation wasn't very good was when Nishinoya went for a underhand dig on a Jump Floater.
there is very little time when u see tsukki loose his composure, this is one of those times when hinata sneaks up to his training session, its super funny
if i remember correctly, sakusa is a germaphobe, therefore everytime u see him he will be wearing a mask unless he is playing, thats when he takes it off i think, also he is the rank 1 spiker or something but definitely one of the top 3 spikers along with ushijima
The other coach at the miyagi training camp is the coach from johzenji, the fun team from season 2 !
It was good for him to be motivated but they are scolding his inconsideration this time
Can't wait for coach's reaction to my favorite captain in this universe :"""

Coach Donny I'm so jealous of your experience with the Men's national team. Honestly I can't imagine the excitement you had with that whole memory.
And thus begins the greatest arc (imo) of Haikyuu!
It's very enlightening to hear the coach's thought processes in deciding what's best for the team vs individual player. Thanks for sharing all that technical stuff, coach!
Coach Donny: "For Hinata to achieve that next level dream, he is gonna have to develop some passing abilities"
Of course coach Donny would know.
wow Coach, what an awesome story about meeting the national team!!
So wait, furigana is what they call those little hiragana characters you sometimes see next to kanji? Not a whole other writing system?
@@hopewelch9421 Yup, exactly.
Coach Donny’s editor, just wanted to say you did an amazing work!
thank you!! 🙌😁
I was smiling when Coach said he wanted Hinata's position to be an Outside/Opposite Hitter. 😊
(Author had to point out he's not a Germaphobe, just very blunt against things he dislikes.)
and Kiyoomi's first appearance is in 2016 in the manga.
Up👍🏽
People say they find the moment when Hinata appears cringey or awkward but for me it’s a show of his determination, also recklessness but especially drive to improve and determination
Just like Coach said : successful people don't think about 'if', but 'how'.
Hinata doesn't care what he should do or what other people think about him. That's a very positive trait that often misunderstood.
I love coach Donnys in-depth conversations about everything ❤️
Coach talking about showing weight training.
Taketora: Hold my Guts
a Coach Donny upload is the best way to start the weekend. Stay Hydrated
This makes it so that Kageyama can read the kanji but Takeda sensei didn’t include this which is why he had a hard time finding his way.
btw, remember that they only invited 15 and 16 years old at the youth training camp to prepare them for the selection of 19-under two years from now which those kids will be 17 and 18 years old after 2 years. so you will not see bokuto nor ushijima since they are already above 15 and 16
up!
Watching Haikyuu S4E1 for the nth time now but the secondhand embarassment is still going strong on THAT scene 😂
Anyways, coach, regarding the Japan team coach's speech, the phrase "The Japan team crumbles before height and strength", I think, actually meant that the team would lose if faced with taller and stronger opponents.
So excited to see coach's reaction to Hoshiumi skills, he's awesome.
