Zoo Welcomes New Bornean Orangutan Baby

- The Oregon Zoo’s primate family grew by a few pounds on Wednesday morning as 20-year-old Bornean orangutan Kitra gave birth to a new baby, adding to the world population of this critically endangered species.
Caregivers said the newborn entered the world on April 13, at around 11 a.m. The first-time mom and her new arrival are doing well in their behind-the-scenes maternity den.
“We’re all pretty excited about it,” said Kate Gilmore, who oversees the zoo’s primate area. “It’s great to see Kitra taking such good care of her baby. There’s still a lot that could happen, so we’re being very cautious and giving her as much quiet time as possible. But so far she seems to be taking to motherhood quite well.”
“We couldn’t ask for anything more,” agreed senior keeper Asaba Mukobi. “She pulled the baby close to her right away, and the baby appears to be strong and healthy.” - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

Bob and Kitra had a baby?! That’s so awesome! :D Bornean orangutans are critically endangered, and every newborn counts to the survival for the species. I’m so happy for the two and the zoo for this milestone. I hope the baby will be able to grow strong and contribute to the species in the future. :3
She's such a good mommy, cleaning and cuddling her baby. and it looks like they're latching on well too. so happy for them. she's a proud mama
I ain’t gonna lie, but this incredible display of unconditional motherly love made so emotional and tear up. Lucky baby, he is safe and loved. Every baby needs such a mamma.
You can tell in her eyes that she is most definitely in love with her baby and being a 1st time mom she had that look of pure love
When I was a PhD student I studied in Borneo and Sumatra then at BOSF. The mom Orangutan is the most caring and affectionate and protective mother. I studied and wrote a paper on the behavior patterns between the Macaque and Orangutans

Sorry to burst your sentimental bubble but that's just nature flooding a mothers body with Oxytocin which makes them attached to the baby thus giving the nurture that it needs to grow.
Just another one of nature's programming and yes , sometimes in life the body doesn't trigger that reaction thus abandonment

My god, 2022 was a year full of orangutan births. And I love it, its so wonderful how everything changed, I'm proud of all the mothers and new babies coming. That year was a bit difficult for me, however these news make everything better, and more other animals. Orangutans forever in my hearts.

I absolutely love this…she’s such a good mom and takes care of her baby just like a human mom does…they are both adorable.
I love how the apes are so much in love with their babies. All of them are over flowing with kisses. Occasionally I grimace as mommy appears to over extend one of baby's limbs, but they always seem to know exactly how far they can pull. Amazing.
