Overlanding Colorado’s DEADLIEST Trail?!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 чер 2024
- The Devil's Punchbowl (Schofield Pass) has the reputation of being one of Colorado's Deadliest Trails, if not the Deadliest. We take a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Jeep Cherokee XJs, and Toyota FJ Cruiser through it and we'll show you how to get through it safely too. This Trail guide and overland trip adventure shows you what you need to know!

Back in 98, I took my stock 96 f150 4x4 off road pkg from crested butte to crystal mill. I was glad it had steel skid plates underneath. Made it with no problem. Swam in the “punch bowl”!!
That’s awesome! Yeah, we were pressed for time but I definitely plan on swimming that one day. Thanks for watching!
Man, that off camber section at 7:50 made me pucker up when I did it a few months ago. You handled it like a pro Dewie. Absolutely, no sweat!
Thank you! Pucker doesn’t really get to me, well except recently on Poughkeepsie in the TJ.
Definitly adding this one to the ever growing list of trails to hit!
You’d love it!
Great video! I enjoyed it
Thanks buddy!
My friends are getting ready to do this next week. I get to meet up with them in Crested Butte for a day. Super exciting. Great Video!!!
Love it! Have a blast!
Beautiful and fun! Another exceptionally well-edited video! That makes for a great day! Out of shape, eh? In that part of the country I'd be hiking 50% to offset all of that seat time on & off work! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I’m out of shape for sure… use to ski and hike to better ski terrain more. My goal is to get back at it and in shape! Thank you for watching!
Man that looked fun!
It was a fun trip! The next day (Pearl pass, Aspen ski mountain) we filmed probably our best stuff of the trip.
One important fact that you failed to mention is that the "road" is impassable until at least August in a "normal" snow year. There is an avalanche thar dumps snow at the bottom of the Devil's Punchbowl. When I was there in late July there was still an ice flow at least 4 or 5 feet deep covering about a hundred feet of the 'road". I was on my trusty mountain bike and traversed the ice flow with no problems but as for motorized vehicles...maybe a serious motorcycle rider. The route is in extreme part of Pitkin County (Aspen) and there is zero incentive to send in a bulldozer for four wheelers. Coming from Crystal Mill probably enough space to turn around but if you are going down the pass you are really screwed. Maybe have to back UP the pass!!! So unless you are meeting on coming traffic beware!
Good note!
Interesting vehicles and a wild trail! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed your content your geared more to us folks that do not have sponsors. I've been to a few of the places by myself out there and I enjoyed it
Awesome, thank you!
Obviously another awesome video Dewie Thank you so much for sharing. I love your channel.
Thanks buddy! We gotta get that group date figured out!
This looks like so much fun. And a perfect weekend overland trip
It was! Thanks for watching buddy!
Funny enough I accidentally went down that road a few years back trying to get from our camp spot at lead king down to crystal mill. Should have gone straight but took a left and realized it a mile in.
Lol wild
Loved the off camber wheel lift!
I do too… that’s why I sometimes don’t disconnect. However I believe I was for this as I usually disconnect if it’s somewhat risky.
Addicting videos. Top notch stuff!
Thank you!
Super~perfect sharing! have a ncie day!💪
Thank you! You too!
What a great video. Gorgeous scenery, challenging trail, and camping at the end. Sounds pretty much like a perfect day to me!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was an awesome day, but my secret is the next two days were even better (a more challenging trail, better food, better camping spot, off-roading on a ski resort). I’m pretty excited as Drew has way better footage to work with for the next one!
What an epic video I absolutely loved the overland aspect and it’s something that I’ve wanted to do myself for some time now
Thanks a bunch! I’m trying to learn how to be an overlander. I’ve been living in that off-road camper since April 1st so I think I’m getting there lol
As always, thank you for sharing the stoke!
My pleasure!
You have the best off-road videos, I enjoy the stock perspective so much. I'm working on building a "stock" XJ from a beater I bought for $1,200. It's a long road ahead, but I hope I'm headed for some off roads. *Dad Joke*
Thank you so much! I’m kinda in a similar spot as I bought a TJ that I want to restore to make it my new trail guide vehicle. Well, I’ll use them all, but I want to use the TJ a lot lately. I daily the JL wrangler.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Ya, it is nice to be able to have something to beat on a bit and not have to worry about getting to work. I daily a '95 F150, and use the XJ in the winter right now. I'll look forward to seeing your TJ in some videos then!
Awesome video! I'll be in the Buena Vista area next week.
Thank you and have fun!
The colors are awesome!
Colorado is definitely colorful!
Very awesome trail. will need to add this to the list.
It definitely is!
Love the 2 dr :)
I’m a sucker for two doors, that’s for sure!
Mmm - now I want steak! 😁 Thanks for the great video 👍
Our pleasure!
"Zach did you find something?
I found some candy on the ground but it tasted kinda funny" 😂
😂
And that’s just a small sample of the hilarity Zach brings on the trips lol
I really enjoyed the "overlanding for the rest of us" feel. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the overlanding channels with the exorbitantly expensive builds, but sometimes it just feels like gear porn. It's refreshing to see guys really enjoying it without acting like you have to drop 90K on gear to be "in the club".
I appreciate that… off-roading/overlanding shouldn’t be restricted to the rich in my opinion.
I’m a happy cheap diesel customer for several years with absolutely no issues. But ours is a simple control panel and remote. I wouldn’t trust “auto elevation adjustment” or app controls
Me too with my old unit, my issue is with vevor.
I think it was a trip when the guy said if he could get star link, he would live out there being someone that comes from Gunnison County that’s what I loved about it. No cell phone service no Internet service, just chilling out in the west elk mountains and elk mountains
He’s like me, works on call. That’s what he meant… I too would love to take call (Wi-Fi calling) from a remote location using starlink. I’m thinking of getting it or a satellite phone so I can do that since I have two hours to get to work once called. That’s probably all we’d use it for.
AWESOME!!!!! I am going to once again try and talk my wife into finishing this trail in October when we are out there. We had a couple opposite direction wheelers we had to let by last year and that is sporty on this trail. We ended up turning around right before where the goats were. I feel the goats may be that little extra to talk her into going the whole way this year.
Festive!
And we will have to talk my husband into this as well ... Remember he was out of my Jeep and walking at more than one point last time.
@@brendaslade1902 I KNOOOOWWWWWWWWW, tell him we know where the mountain goats are now and he needs pictures of the waterfalls. I think Cathy had a panic attack just watching Dewie on this one.
My girl is afraid of wheeling so I get it lol. I don’t even think she watches these anymore.
@@jcfindley380 Lol I sent them pics of mountain goats but idk ... 🤷♀️
@coloradomallcrawlers hahahahaha! I am amazed your channel hasn't blown up yet as it is hands down the best one on Colorado offroading. I feel it is just a matter of time. Keep up the great work sir.
Blanca Peak would like a word with you! Seriously though the jaws on Blanca make that one section on Schofield Pass look easy.
One day I’ll have time to edit our trail guide on Blanca Peak (My stock JL, Davon’s stock Bronco, and Drew’s xterra). Calling this one the deadliest is just what the reports say… I don’t know. Blanca wasn’t as scary as they say, but it was more challenging than expected.
Great video as always. I also subscribe as Daniel K.
Did you use AI for some of the narration? Either way, 😁👍🏼.
Thank you! We hired a guy off of Fiverr. We like to try different things sometimes and this was just the same guy as the Taylor pass video.
I notice no Trailhawks on this one! About halfway up that narrow jagged slanted spot, I'd have been wondering WTF I was doing, and where I went wrong in life! Extra underwear looks to be a requirement.
The videos are about the trails, but we like to include a variety of vehicles doing these trails. With that said, vehicles are dependent on who can join me. Every future video will have a JL, TJ, or Liberty KJ as that what I currently own
I thought this was a beer commercial in the beginning. It kind of is.
Lol
We used to always pronounce that as Sco-field Pass.
My pronunciations are horrible… I’m dyslexic so that’s one thing I can’t do.
@@coloradomallcrawlers haha, totally get it. This is NW of Crested Butte, correct? I believe I rode snowmobiles through there one time years ago. They close that road during the winter.
@richardmoore2003 correct… I bet it’s be fun on snowmobiles!
Easy peay trail lol... 😂 😊
Lol
Any timeline on the liberty?
Ran it this past week. Still overheating on slow speed climbing in 2wd, 4wd high, and 4wd low. It never did this before. New mechanic once my dad’s truck gets fixed. No timeline eta yet. Will be using the TJ on 30.5in tires till I can get it here.
