Imogene Pass teaches a lesson in preparedness | San Juan Trail Guide

- Imogene Pass is an iconic San Juan off-road trail that takes you from Ouray to Telluride. Often compared with the legendary Black Bear Pass, Imogene has its own cult following of off-roaders and overlanders from all over the world. In this video, we’ll show you what it’s all about including shelf roads, water crossings, sketchy photo opportunities, and incredible Colorado scenery. This guide was completed with a stock Jeep Wrangler TJ, Nissan Xterra, a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JLU, and a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk KL. This is definitely regarded as one of Colorado’s best trails, but is it beginner friendly? We’ll find out!

About Colorado Mallcrawlers:
We are a channel that aims to show incredible off-road trails and our adventures to get through them with stock or your not so typical off-road vehicles. If that sounds like a fun watch, we'd love to have you as a subscriber! The channel membership was created to give our community the best trail info on youtube quicker since trail/overland guides take a while to create. Video Editors are Drew Hunter and Dewie Jones. We're always looking for more offroad video editors as we film a ton of trails (100% of adsense goes to the editor).
Channel Members have access to our filming schedule and I want you to be in the videos! The Black Bear crew gets additional easy to edit videos but offer more up to date info on trails (since guides take a while to put together). The Holy Cross crew gets more say in what videos get edited for the channel (video credits and early looks at Trail Guide edits). / @coloradomallcrawlers

I squealed when I saw the 1st gen Xterra! Best Vehicle I have ever owned!
Even tho I don’t own it, I’ve loved them myself!
One of MY Absolute FAVORITE Trails...🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Heck yeah bud!
He’s back! 🎉
I did Imogene last year. It’s by far the most incredible trail I’ve done in Colorado yet.
Lol, thanks! We’re trying… still filming like crazy tho. Editing is our slow down.
Was on the trail that day and let me tell you running the rest of that trail to Ouray after dark isn't for the faint of heart!!! 23:34 famous for 2 seconds 😂
Glad y’all got taken care of and off trail!
Outstanding video, you make the best trail videos.
Thank you!
Your videos are always such a joy to watch. The music that you selected to play in the background was a nice choice. It doesn’t drown out the sounds of the action or rustling/rushing nature, but gives me that cherished Offroad VHS nostalgia. Much appreciated! Keep them coming.
Thank you so much! This one was all Drew! I’m going to have to consult with him on music as I never know what I’m doing in that department.
Perfect timing! Looking forward to watching.
Thanks buddy!
We ran this last year and it's one of my favorite trails!
It’s a great one!
Another EXCELLENT trail guide! I miss being in Colorado! Thanks!
Thanks and I hope you are able to get back here!
Great job on all your videos, please keep posting. I know it is a lot of work to do these and it is greatly appreciated.
Thank you! We absolutely will, just bear with us as I’ve given up on being consistent. I’d rather give you guys our best rather than a rushed video. I’m secretly hoping our raw member videos trick the algorithm into thinking we’re consistent tho so it doesn’t hide when we upload something.
Did Imogene Pass from Ouray to Telluride back in the early 1980's with my dad. Was basically my first off-road trip and made with a stock 1984 Toyota SR-5 pickup. The shelf road on the cliff on the South side of Telluride was a bit terrifying (I was new to off roading).
Sounds like a great introduction to off-road travel!
This will be just the thing to watch when I get home from work tonight.
We’ll do a premiere and I think this is Drew’s best edit… and i think all of his have been great!
i'm sure you've been told this before but it's a breath of fresh air seeing videos where one can actually think they can use their vehicle to explore these trails, because now the normal is to throw 37s and huge beefy suspension and go on trails. but you really dont get the feeling you can do them having a close to stock vehicle.
Thats our goal… thankfully many stock vehicles are built beefy enough to do a lot of trails. Still, we don’t snub our noses to a good build for those truly brutal trails, but for many, they already have what they need to see these views!
Well, people have different ideas about how capable they want their vehicles to be. I have a lifted Power Wagon on 37's which is needed due to the truck's long wheelbase. I've been off-roading for over 50 years now and my first 4X4 was a 1963 GMC Panel truck which wouldn't make a lot of these trails. The first 4X4 I put a lift on was a 1980 Toyota pickup truck with the 2.2 liter 4 banger. It went just about everywhere, even without lockers. My trucks have become more and more capable as the decades have slipped by and now I'm at the age when I don't want to have to do too much physical exertion, especially at higher altitudes to get my truck to where I want it to be. I let the truck do the work.
Another AWESOME VIDEO.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Sorry I'm just now getting a chance to catch this. I've been out for a few days. Awesome man!
All good
Great video! Thank you for not playing the obnoxious music! Lol
Music is my biggest struggle with editing, but this was all Drew… might need to ask him to pick music for my next edit lol
Those lower control arm bolts are notorious for backing out. I got lucky once and caught mine 4 threads showing during a pretrip. If you have a Toyota product, you should be checking them regularly. Also, put a touch of loctite on them if you ever take them out for mods/repairs.
I actually carry 2 of those and 2 caliper bolts now due to "incidents". They're cheap and worth their weight in gold if you need one.
Good tips! Thanks for the input!
Another great video! Last year i said the next time i do Immogene i'm going to do it reverse...this just looks so much funner!
Let me know when you’re back buddy! Hey check out Casey 250’s WK2 video. I don’t think he meant to, but kinda dogged the WK2. We gotta fix that… it was the wrong WK2 model and i have no idea what kind of trail that was.
Thanks for the great video!
My pleasure!
Best video yet!
Thank you! Great editing helps!
The like the white jeep setup with the mount on the back that look badass!
It does… he’s an active Jeeper.
Super excited!!!
Didn’t disappoint, another awesome trail guide!!!
Thank you!
@@coloradomallcrawlers you’re welcome !
Big fan of your work. Hope to bump into you on some trails this summer. ✌️
That’d be awesome!
We did Imogene last year in July in our 2007 FJ Cruiser and had a great time. It was beautiful and challenging. I would like to do it again one day.
That is awesome! I definitely hope you get to recreate that adventure!
THIS will be AWESOME...😁
Thanks buddy!
@@coloradomallcrawlers Yeah buddy !!!🤘😁🤘
Great video, definitely a trail I want to do. Yellow or red TJ’s, love em.
It’s a good one!
Another great video. I actually just got back from visiting Ouray and Telluride. Unfortunately most all trails were impassable due to snow. Still had an amazing time visiting this beautiful country. Crystal mill was my wife favorite. Definitely will be coming back in August.
Thank you! August will be great !
First time I did that trail was 1990 in my brand new Ford F-250 Extra cab 4x4 with my best girl. We made sure to stop and honor Social Tunnel!
Excellent!
Thanks!
I’ll make sure Drew gets that, thank you!
Looking forward to running this one again from the other direction.
Let’s do it!
Nice video, you of the thinks I appreciated was the vehicle info I love to see more u-tubers give vehicle specs so those of us watching have a better Idea of what it takes to travel or concur a trail. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching !
It could just be the tequila talking right now, but damn I love your videos. I enjoy the little historical notes you’re dropping in on this one one. The little nugget you put in there.
I love that! One of the best comments I’ve read… I’ll make sure Drew sees it!
@@coloradomallcrawlers if you fellas are ever up in the Woodland Park area and want to do Rampart Range or want to scoot over to Buena Vista, let me know. I’d be happy to wheel with you. Figure out how to direct message me. Keep up the great work.
@FlewTheCoop I’m organizing trips through our channel membership. We’re likely wheeling around buena vista in July.
@@coloradomallcrawlers it could be the tequila again. Where the heck is your channel membership sign up?
@FlewTheCoop I think we have a link in the description… but wait till you sober up. It unfortunately costs money which I’m not a big fan of, but it was the best way for me to organize our trips. Google wouldn’t let me make the lowest tier free which gets trip dates. Other levels get other stuff.
10:35 - At the end of that water crossing, if you take a right, it’s a loop that takes you to a much larger waterfall that you ended up driving above on the main trail. Should check it out next time you’re up there. Love your videos, Dewie!
Thanks my friend! I am going to do some TJ and camper tests there next week, I’ll check it out if they’ve cleared to that that point by then.
@@coloradomallcrawlersdef let me know the conditions!!
@jordanlawlor365 can do!
all the trails over there are favorite of all time i did all of them no issues on 33s no lockers with xj even Poughkeepsie wall no need for traction control or silly electronics if you're new to wheeling would not suggest doing those trails
Good stuff and recommendations!
Way to go Drew once again great video my friend Dave and I want to go do Bear Pass with our daily drivers a Tacoma and Xterra both on 32's even though we both have Jeeps on 37's and 40's and our backyard is the Rubicon. I didn't know that this one is next to each other maybe next year. Love to see all of 4x4's playing together.
Do it!
There are videos of people taking their full size trucks down Black Bear Pass so your Tacoma and Xterra should have no problems. Enjoy!
Yesssssssssssss !!!!!!!!!!
🤟
@@coloradomallcrawlers 😄😄😄😄😄
I am missing that whole area this year. I chose to go to the east coast and do some trails over there, so either later this year or next year we will go back to Colorado. The scenery is amazing up there.
I learned to wheel on the east… you’ll find some awesome places I’m sure. You definitely can find some big challenges there!
We are in Brevard so we had to go and do Hurricane Creek. It has some extra obstacles this year due to traffic and weather. That whole area is just beautiful.
Great video showing this fun but challenging trail. Extra points for stopping to help a fellow off roader.
One correction is the structure that you ID'ed as Fort Peabody is not the fort. When you get to the top of Imogene the road splits. You turn right to go the pass and the left trail goes to a nice overlook area. Fort Peabody is up above that lookout. It is a wood structure a little bigger than the one on the pass and is surrounded by a rock wall. I recommend going up to this lookout for another great view.
Thank you for the additional info! We appreciate it!
I so enjoy all your videos and gets me inspired to get ready to on these trials with you guys. I would love to be a part and join in anytime
Awesome! I want channel viewers to be in the videos so I’m doing the trips through our channel membership. There’s details about filming a video vs being led on a trail that I need anyone who joins me to know. The membership allows me to easily get that info out there.
@@coloradomallcrawlers awesome. I will get that going to get ready
You guys outdid yourselves on this trail guide! Way to go!
Ya know, I’ve wondered if you were supposed to include your vehicle when giving oncoming traffic a number. So if there’s 4 in a group, then it goes 3,2,1,& 0 right?
Thank you! Drew knows how to edit! Yes, you are correct with the last one being a fist.
Can't wait to do this trail and Black bear (if it's open) in September. Will be on holiday from Adelaide, South Australia and I am counting the days down🎉🎉 🎉.
I have a feeling black bear will be open. Youll have a blast!
Are you hiring a Jeep when you go? I’m thinking of trying to do Imogene and Black Bear as well, from Darwin.
We are hiring a wrangler when we land at DEN airport, and will need to check the insurance policy as to what I can do with it (currently drive a JK), if not then we will do a day tour.
And fingers crossed Black Bear is open this yr.
@@grantta7450
Sounds great, hope you have a great time.
I was thinking of flying over to the US and doing Jeep Beach or Great Smokey Mountain, then doing something similar to what you’re planning. Did a tour of Moab a few years ago, all it did was fuel the want to do more.
Cheers
Definitely check… I had an idea of taking a rental offroad (nothing crazy) and remember seeing that wouldn’t fly. I looked into Turo too. There are outfitter companies in Denver that will rent you a offroad-able overland kitted out vehicle (Jeeps, Broncos, Toyotas) that you can wheel all over. It’s a bit expensive tho. I’d maybe rent a SUV like grand cherokee to tour the state and then rent a Jeep in Ouray or Moab. If you got some time, definitely see Moab. Its an hour and a half from Grand Junction (lots of rental companies there).
Don’t forget about Mosquito Pass 13185ft
For sure!
Great video! Do you think a 4x4 Tacoma pulling and off road camper can do Imogene Pass?
Thanks! Yes, BUT Imogene can be crowded enough that I wouldn’t pull my camper on it.
Could you start in Ouray, do black bear to Telluride and Imagene pass back in one day?
Yes, you can, but it would be a long day.
Which one of your videos is Blanca Peak in? I saw the highlight for it in your intro. Asking because as I went over Medano Pass I saw that game gate trail up Blanca and I would love to see you guys wheel that since it's 8 technicality🎉
The bronco vs jeep video was really just the blanca peak trail guide.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Right on 🤙
@Coloradohighcountrywheelin holy cross was harder for us, but it was raining
Do yall normally air down & disconnect sway bars when doing these trails?? I’m headed to this area for the first time in late July & want to run Imogene & maybe Poughkeepsie/Engineer. Really dig your channel!!
Most people in the videos are aired down. I air down for mud, sand, snow, wet rocks, and extended duration trips. I do disconnect on obstacles. Sometimes for fun I’ll stay connected to try to three wheel. If you have the ability, disconnecting the sway bar is recommended when offroad. Any JL will have no problem in the san juans with a skilled driver. Thank you!
@@coloradomallcrawlers cool - just wondering when I run some of these San Juan mountain trails next month if I should run them aired down & disconnected - wasn’t too sure of the number of obstacles I’d encounter. I have a couple of locals I’m meeting up with so I’m sure they’ll get me dialed in. Anywho, thanks again!!
I want to drive this trail so bad with my new to me 80th anniversary Wrangler but I live in Pennsylvania.
I hope you can get it out here sometime!
Did this from the Telluride side last year with @nazgul_renegade. When we got to the summit we had a rain cloud roll into us and we did the Ouray side in the rain/clouds back down.
That sounds like an adventure!
👍🏻🍻
🍻
@12:06 possibly more fun but easily the lesser of the options to take.
It appeared all the crossings were part of this waypoint and on trail, but it was something we debated.
Just bought my first off roading vehicle. I live in New Hampshire and don't know where to go at all. I also don't have any friends that are in to off roading. Where can I go to get a list of trails? And how do I meet people to do this together? Would love to cut my teeth in the north east and then eventually get out west for trails like that.
Hey there, the best suggestion I could give you is join a local club. Nothing better than wheeling with others as you learn what works for you.
I’ve heard of people driving subies on this trail.. no way they did that without taking a pretty serious beating from what I just watched
There are easier lines
JonDAdventuring has one on it with a subie i believe. Without 4low, it’d be tough on a vehicle. Still, it’s doable in a vehicle with AWD.
@@coloradomallcrawlers …so like a 2024 Maverick Tremor?
I’m not familiar with the maverick’s capabilities, but I’d love to learn what they can do without destroying the vehicle. Unfortunately, I don’t have any friends who own one.
How do you guys manage passing on those shelf roads? Do downhill vehicles have to back up? I’ve wheeled for many years but never had to deal with those situations.
Uphill traffic has the right of way, BUT off-roaders usually will work together to figure out who can get in the clear the easiest.
@@coloradomallcrawlers Thank you. Cool trip. Hope to get back out to the San Juans again and experience some of your trails
I hope you do too!
@@coloradomallcrawlers Thanks man! I appreciate how willingly you engage with your viewers. Doin’ it right!
ITS NOT a trail for first Timers !!!!!!!!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try something easier first !!!!! I have seen First hand people over their Ability on this !!!!!!! Thats like those that want to go do BLACK BEAR without ANY expereince..... NOT a Good Idea !!!!!
Would Ophir be better for a Beginner?
For sure! Id probably take the camper over ophir but I wouldn’t on this one.
From the Ouray side, it's very easy. What's intimidating is when you get to the top and see the shelf-road down into Ophir. First time, I turned around and went back to Ouray, no problem. Worth it to see views from top.
It would. Ophir Pass was the second real trail I did. I did that then did Imogene right after in the same day. I also tried to go to Yankee Boy Basin, but turned around halfway up due to losing daylight. I did Broken Arrow in Sedona the day before. I bought an FJ Cruiser and went on a road trip two months later. It was my first offroad vehicle. If you're a confident driver, you can do it.
drive to pass from east is easy. no 4wd. plain gravel. drive from west can be rocky but nothing extreme at all. and yes, drive down/up west side of pass can be intimidating. just don't look down. :)
Why does it look like this was shot on an iPhone in ProRes mode and then no color correction was applied in post?
Some of it is shot on an iPhone but in auto mode, not pro res. Drew is the best color corrector this channel has… I’m pretty sure the look of this was intentional. I thought it looked great and realistic.
@snivesz32 Color correction was done to try and even out the footage from the 3-4 different cameras. Most of it was very blown out exposure wise and green so a lot got corrected closer to the middle, mostly the GoPro footage. However, recently I have been dealing with constant crashing on the color page in Davinci resolve so that greatly affected my color process having to restart the program multiple times every hour. I was satisfied with the results without spending a few more days on just the color grading. Eventually I'll sort out some good Luts for different scenarios, but with the changing of environments and the angle of the sun though out the day each shot seems to need its own specific adjustments past just a general LUT.
Appriciate your input and hopefully adds some context to our process in the making of this one.
Awesome footage! not a fan of the music though.
Fair enough! Music is definitely the hardest thing for me as an editor, and I’m sure it’s not easy for Drew either. We always want the vehicle sounds to come through mostly, but if we leave music out, the video feels empty and doesn’t do as well. I’m actually stuck on the music phase in my next edit right now. If i can figure it out, the rest should be quick to cut as I think mine will be a shorter vid.
I'll say “SalEYEda” and I'll deal with the BS that is “Byoona Vista” but I cant stand, let alone listen to "EYEmogene" ! I know its historical and traditional but cant we agree to not speak the way barely literate miners a century and a half ago said things?
Anyways good vid as usual! I appreciate your perspective on the SxS usage and etiquette, thanks!
I don’t speak right as I’m dyslexic so I don’t get too worked up on how something is said. I try to look it up before filming and recreate what I found. Sometimes I cant do the pronunciation like Poughkeepsie so I rarely said it in that video.
Thank you!
@@coloradomallcrawlers oh yeah no dig at you you are great 😃.
As far as I know that's the "right" way to say it. There's just a lot of weird pronunciation in Colorado that seem ridiculous.
Sorry if it came across that way 😕
Thanks!
Dude!! Thank you!!
